It was to my understanding the paddle could not go above the wrist even after contact is that not correct? If so, then how can you put topspin on the ball since the racket would advance above your wrist?

This would be a great video. Especially the corner serves. She was really struggling to get to those serves, and I've been there too. Some of them were bouncing just a few inches off the ground, more than ten feet away from where you're normally told to stand. I'd love to see what you're reacting to and how you stay ready to receive those corner serves.

Should the return for a topspin serve be the same as for a topin serve, with the hit from low to high at the contact point? Should the return for a slice serve be a slice?

Great video Jordon. I've also found that from the odd side a high lob with a little spin can confuse the returner. The ball slowly moves to their left, but also will give a little kick when it lands. The returner may be slowly moving to get around to their forehand but ends up getting jammed from the kick. Also, I have had to train myself to step back after the serve. You demonstrated that you step forward into the court after the serve. A deep return will cause you to back up. So, I say to myself, "Serve and step back" so I don't get caught backing up. (Another up mantra is "Return and run" up to the NVZ.)

Hi Jordan, great instructional serve video. Not many comprehensive serving videos out there like yours. I'm a 4.0 player and play at Naples Florida Community Park. As you know, there are many players with different skills playing there, especially in season like now. I think it's so important to have multiple serves to get an advantage. I love the high topspin serve and I will practice and use it during my doubles matches. I've learned and applied so many skills from your videos, especially on the various stacking methods. I'm a southpaw and stacking is a great advantage for me. Happy New year and looking forward to more of your great videos. that change of pace on the serves is also quite affective. Location, height and pace mix is good. That odd side slice also works well when directed left of the body (for a right handed player) that then spins further into the body and jams that forehand return.

I am a former spin (chainsaw and later hand spin, although no longer due to rule changes) server. Now my go to serve is a hard hit side spin serve deep, same as what you were doing with #5, but deeper and with more pace. It usually gets a kick of 1-2 feet right. Similar to your #1, but with side spin instead of topspin. So your #1 is what I mix in to switch things up. Do you ever do that deep side spin serve? It especially works well as a body jammer, where they either have to run around their backhand (and therefore are out of position for shot #4) or get jammed at the body. Also, it would help to discuss how the serves change up for lefties vs. righties. Great content, looking forward to more!

I find also that a high lob serve to bangers is pretty effective because they have to generate all of their own power. I am not a banger so I consider the high lob serve to be a sucker serve and I just throw it back high and deep and get to the net. The short serve after hitting deep ones is a real killer if you are playing older or less mobile players. I have seen some players serve backhanded which has been pretty effective. Don't see it often plus the side spin throws people off and doesn't seem to bounce as high.

Really enjoyed this video, I got a chance to practice this today after playing. I have 20 balls, and in one session of serving all four courts, 20 balls each. I was just doing the top spin serve, moving it to all four corners of service court. I have also moved from the center of the court to the center of the service court. being left-handed, I set up facing to the left of the court parallel with the back line. what I realized is my body is hiding my paddle until It hits the ball!! I was amazed after just hitting 80 balls. This serve was working well to 80% of the time while still screwing around with changing the swing. I was just hitting the ball out of my hand before this. The cross Court to the close corner of the receivers Court is un returnable without over cooking it. we will see when I get it in a game?

Great video, I wonder why you don't recommend the deep slice serve #5 for the even side? I've found it to be very effective against right handed players as it starts at their body and ends up jamming them up on their backhand with no time to run around it to hit a forehand shot.

I like to spin all my balls so I am trying to develop a spin game. I love all the coaching tips that you give us. What I enjoy most about your coaching was you were the first coach & person on youtube that said beginners could use spin in there game😊. I 'll be 72 yrs in May. I hoping to come out to one of your clinics. My doctor said that I have to build up my strength so that I can keep playing so I am working on that. I use to play a little bit of racquetball and a lot of rec level pingpong. That's were my trying to put english on the ball comes from. My playmates at the senior center says I have too much attitude when I slam a pop up ball in the air. But it just a habit from ping pong. I am just slowly coming back from surgery. At LifeTime Spa I play with a 81 yrs old he has a tennis back ground great player he's just a little over 6' and has a wing span like a Condor on the court. I just wanted to say much kudos to your coaching and sharing with us on youtube. Thank you for answering me back. I chose to get the Selkirk Project 003 paddle so that I can do topspins and I wanted to work on my touch game. I only buy topspin paddles. I got the project 003 so that I can up my game. Fantastic video! I am just starting Pickleball and I have a very specific question. I am an intermediate Ambidextrous tennis player with no backhand in that sport. However in Tennis, I can serve better righty than lefty. 1. Since I am new to pickleball, should I focus on the first four serves and try to get as many backhanded returns as possible using whatever hand makes sense? Or… 2. In tennis I have been working on serving right handed from the right side with spin to hit the corner… and left handed from the left side with that same strategy. That way I only have to learn one routine from each side. Perhaps that is a better strategy given limited practice time? Final point, in tennis, being ambidextrous makes sense as I have time to switch hands. Does it make sense to use both hands in pickleball?

Here's something I like to do as the receiver: as my opponent is getting ready to serve, most will look up to see where I'm standing to make their decision as to where they're going to hit their serve, I will sometimes set up my position a bit too far to the left or right on purpose so that they think I'm out of position. When they look back down at the ball to serve, I'll move back to where I should have been to begin with and one of two things usually happens: they see me move and in that micro-second it makes them second guess their serve and it messes them up a bit or if they didn't notice my movement and adjust their serve, I'm now ready for it since I've taken that one step back into the better receiving position. Of course, I don't do this often as it would get predictable, but every once in a while, say if they've gone on a run and gotten several points in a row. Thoughts?

Love your video and easy to understand. I do have a question. I rolled my wrist like a stop spin serve , my contact point is still below my waist. I have been playing pickleball for about 6 months and no one said anything to me that it is illegal but recently someone told me my serve is illegal. I am confused. Can you please confirm if this is true? 🙂

I feel more consistent letting the ball bounce on the serve, and it ensures a legal serve if I'm hitting sidespin or slice, but are there disadvantages to letting the ball bounce?

the serves that hit the close kitchen line area look REAL REAL close to being faulted - if you slow it down the head of your paddle is above your wrist on nearly all of those serves but one of them. No one calls these faults it seems though...

A serve I like to use that seems effective is straight down the center line when on the odd side for a right-handed player. I set up over toward the center line and if my opponent does not adjust I send a top spin serve right down the line. Risky, yes, but if it's in or on the line almost impossible for them to return. Have you used this serve?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
Yes, although against better players, they will return it at a very high percentage.

Jordan have always enjoyed and learned much from your videos, but the rule states that the "highest point of the paddle must not be above the highest part of the wrist when the paddle strikes the ball" so especially on the slice serve, that has to be illegal because the top of the paddle is not at its highest but sideways. Your thoughts, please
@BrionesPickleball

Yes, look at it in slow motion, it is lower than the wrist.

Does the grip on the ball have any factor whatsoever in serving? I often implement a knuckle ball grip in hopes that the ball takes the unpredictable path like that pitch. I think I often rely on the 1st and 4th ones. Tonight, i'm going to try to implement the sidespin and lob serve.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
I use an eastern grip for topspin serves. You may slightly adjust for the lob and sidespin serves.

Hey Jordan, whenever I try a slice serve, I get accused of it being illegal because I'm more chipping (chopping it down) than hitting it from low to high. But when you do it in the ad court, it looks like you still go low to high so it's legal. I have to work on that. Nasty!

Great video, I'm ex tennis player, new in playing PB (everyone plays doubles here) and it looks like in rec play PB serving--once "just get the ball in" has evolved into tennis serving. As an ex tennis player yourself, these spin serves are prob second nature to you. Do you teach PB doubles teams on offense to discuss/ hand signal prior to beginning the point where server will be placing the ball, which kind of spin will be used, etc. I think 3.0 Rec doubles players will be seeking this kind of play, no longer province of 'advanced.'
