Hi,
this is a video about mechanisms where you can move the output without changing the distance. My favorite one is #3, what is yours?
This is actually my second-longest video, so I hope you enjoy watching,

0:31 The cracks in the U-joints was a common thing for me in the early 80's. So I fixed these by wrapping with sewing thread. These U-joints can not handle very much torque.

@in1 2 года назад
Oh yes, that's really annoying... That a general problem with that kind of axle hole (for example bushes), but on the universal joints there is probably the most torque. To be honest, I think I have like 100 cracked parts in my collection...

Yes, relatable - had many cracke universal joints in my LEGO collection.

Sorry if I misunderstand but... there were lego U joints in the 80s??

That last design is very interesting. It looks like Lego Tecnic Mastery's joint but the extra CV joints allow displacement without angling the output. Honestly, a good idea, even if it is probably more finicky to work.

Yes, it's neither robust nor smooth... But at least it's a concept.

2:57 the classic “I can't find a bushing so I'll use whatever works” my favourite was number 3, just because of how it works.
@in1
@in1 2 года назад
I actually searched for a 4-tooth knob gear to visualize the rotation, and then gave up

Great video! My favorite is probably #4. It's always great to see different designs that work off the same concept.

Yep, the Schmidt Coupling actually works pretty good under load, the other ones not really...

Would Variable-Distance Output be a more suitable name? With a chain link or simply two adjacent gears, the output is also movable (in a circle).
@in1
@in1 2 года назад
I didn't really found a name which expresses that you can move the output in a plain, so I tried to show that i the thumbnail. But you're right, "movable" is quite unclear.

Are there any practical applications for such designs? Enjoyed the video thoroughly :)
@in1

hmm... probably in most of the possible application you could replace it with something more compact
