Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking and environmental science in my Australian bushland backyard.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist working towards completing a PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to my harvests, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health, ecosystem services, and seed saving.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!

I am so happy that this video has shown up in my recommended videos. I have seen plenty of videos from homesteaders from all over the place, but not really from Australia. Thank you also for making it easier for me to find other Aussie homesteaders to follow, learn & gain inspiration from going forward.

I understand what you mean about others not really being so interested in similar topics as yourself. I have one friend that likes to the garden where I live., so lucky with that. One way to meet other local gardeners is by selling some type of gardening product locally. I sell compost and meet other gardeners that way in the area. It's still a little lonely at times, but just keep plugging away. All the best with the channel into 2021. Blessings and stay safe Marty

Harvesting knowledge is a wonderful crop to grow from your garden - win or fail, you can harvest! I've found that what I like to grow and eat seem to be related to hybiscus which surprised me - love roselle for jelly (eaten every morning stirred into yogurt) and okra, (eaten raw while I slice up the pods to freeze on a cookie sheet overnight then put in freezer bag for frying later) Turk's Cap for its beauty and wonderful flavor for tea, marshmallow for medicinal purposes, and Rose of Sharon for a sweet snack while in the garden and to watch the butterflies getting plum bellied with nectar. I didn't know this until I began gardening last year so an old dog can learn new tricks - yes! grow what you love to eat. I tried to be traditional with a little of everything, but my tiny Florida garden and it's insects had other plans. Rather than being disappointed, I'm happy as a lark with new knowledge and tasty food.

I just found you today! I desperately want to get started on RU-vid! Im a mother of four on a rental property with 20acres, goats ducks and chickens. I follow soo many youtubers from America, particularly Justin Rodes, homesteady, seed and reap and a few others BUT, today I decided to search Australia Homesteaders, I didn't realise there were any, because last time i looked a few years ago there wasn't anyone i could find. One video of yours where u said, if you are an Australian homesteader then you should get started. Haha first time I actually can fully relate and you have made me super keen to get started! It may be because your Australian and more relatable than watching an American. Thank you for the collaboration, I have now found a bunch of other Auzzie homestead RU-vid after finding your video!

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! Wow that sounds like the dream! Can’t wait to one day own some chickens and goats!! There’s definitely a few of us out there - but not nearly as much as the US. Definitely would recommend making some videos! There’s so much knowledge to be shared about homesteading in Aus as it’s such a diverse landscape 🥰 best wishes to you and let me know how the videos go!

Same about growing what you like! 🐍? Don’t like growing those. I planted kholrhabi for the first time yesterday. Looking forward to spinach because we eat so much, the Malabar is kinda slimy....I put it in smoothies. Yes compost just GO!! Gonna go sub to all your channel suggestions. I need to grow cover crops. Love the birdsongs 🐦. Grow what grows well in your area yes! Happy day friend!

Robyn, you mentioned that you love to grow beetroot and carrots. Do you have a certain soil-type that you like to use for root veggies? Where I live there is mostly heavy clay soil. I'm wondering if mixing native clay soil with coco coir, homemade worm castings, and perhaps some aerating particles (small lava rock/pebbles, for instance) may work for beets/carrots, as I'm very interested in growing them. (I'm not too concerned about forking carrots, because they would be mostly used in my own soups/chili/bisque.) I'd love to hear what soil combo you've had luck with.
@thenaturepatch
@thenaturepatch 3 года назад
Hi Travis, we have mostly clay soil here as well so our native soil isn't the best of growing root crops. I like your ideas for additions to the native clay soil though! I'd recommend maybe using some sand as your aerating material - that works best for me and I have friends who had very success carrot crops when adding sand. Good luck growing! :)

I have rejuvenated my beds & this morning planted Autumn/ Winter seedling so I am crossing my fingers. Can you tell me what part of Australia are you Please. Cheers Denise- Brisbane
