Environmental scientist growing food and flowers alongside nature 🌿
Hi there! Welcome to my channel! My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist with a passion for growing all the things! Recently, I completed my PhD looking at the impact of mining on ecosystem services, specifically those important to Indigenous communities in Cape York, Australia. After experiencing extreme burnout, I decided to take a year off research and follow my passion for making videos on growing food and eventually flowers! I share videos of my journey of starting a cut flower farm, creating permaculture gardens and working as a bush regenerator. I also love being in the kitchen and cooking for family, drinking tea, as well as giving new life to old and used things.
Hello my dear you know I am a fan of the beer traps for slugs. I do have a suggestion for you if you can use even shallower things like lids you will probably have even more success.
You’re right Robyn you are going through a huge identity shift. I worked in my office job up to the last month of my first pregnancy .. then suddenly I was in another world without the routine of work and all the people company and mental focus of work so at least you are able to articulate what you are going through .. its very normal .. a day at a time
Your gentleness is enough for me. I don't really mind what you talk about I'm here for it all, I find your slow pace of life refreshing. Maybe as a suggestion you could make more about the individual flowers you grow? From seed starting to harvesting! ❤
Your Hylland cow mug is so beautiful😍☕️🐮. What a beautiful calm morning that is. Oh honey I understand if you can't post vlogs as often your personal life always comes first, huge congrats on your baby your going to be a wonderful mother. Hugs❤
I was gardening all through both of my pregnancies. One thing I wish I did more of was asking for help. Invite a friend around for a planting party. They offer extra energy, and you offer tea, coffee, or wine. Bake a cake, have BBQ, and enjoy an afternoon with friends. Meanwhile , a slow vlog about your garden is always enjoyable!
I'm glad you're being gentle on yourself. I felt there was so much change with my first bub. I had to find some different ways to still be me, but it all comes back eventually and also you grow and evolve in unexpected ways. Also very happy for you that Scott is such a supportive partner. xo
Nice to see that I am not the only one who is dealing with satin birds (Bowerbirds) The green ones can be females or immature males. They are a menace and will eat anything and if there is any hole in netting, they will find it. The other alternative is you do a Ma kettle impersonation sitting on a rocking chair, straw hat with a blunderbuss to scare them away.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is definitely possible, but not easy. My son is 3 now, but I remember him being in my flower studio and then going to the market with me. My garden did get very untidy, and it pained me, but pregnancy totally took it out of me, it’s a very frustrating time, but your body will be your own again. I didn’t start my RU-vid channel until my son was 1 and honestly I’m not sure that is something I could have done at that time, so I’m wishing you a good healthy pregnancy, and good luck with the growing.
I just bought a GeoBin open bottom well ventilated and variable diameter up to 3.75 feet 237 gallons about $40 USD. I get a lot of downed tree limbs evergreens and deciduous every year that I chip/shred so I can use the full size. I just got about 75 gallons from a large maple limb that fell down last week.
food scraps is the main problem in my household. It gets smelly and attracts rats. We solved it by using Bokashi method as the first step in composting them. Once they are already fermented, I add it to my big composting tumbler.
Great video. Compost is so much easier than people think. I built my own that is 1.5 x 1.5M and about 1.5 high. Being sub tropical it composts down fast in summer and slower in winter. I can get 2 fills a year. I add everything from grass clippings, shredded branches, weeds, waste from the chook roost, dog poop... everything. I even add the waste from butchering my own meat chicken and it breaks down surprisingly fast. I don't even find feathers in the end product. I've started two smaller bins and am experimenting with grass clippings, straw, and tree mulch because we get so many grass clippings in summer that it is overwhelming at times knowing where to put it as you can get ants nesting in the grass clippings if not careful.
That's amazing! That's definitely something I miss about the warmer climates is how fast things break down. Totally agree that compost can be so simple! :)
Thanks for the in depth video about compost. I'm going through your back catalogue now. Looking for more on how to harvest castings from worm farms. I wish it were easy to do it more efficiently.
Thanks for watching Siobhan! I have a few videos on harvesting worm castings - there's a few methods out there but I find they all take a bit of time to make sure worms can move out of the castings before you scoop it out :)
Awesome! I actually got these ones from our local rubbish tip where they have a large bin that you can buy bulk for quite cheap. Trade off is that some are a little broken but overall not too bad :)
I've been struggling over the last few days with slugs too! I've tried all the DIY traps and set some beer traps tonight to see if they work and fingers crossed they do :/
Gee it looks coldddddd 🥶 In my garden I’m currently just removing dead leaves from my potted pothos plants 😂 it is all happening here! So keen to see your garden start to wake up again in the warmer weather and burst back to life! But I’m not wishing away the cool weather as I know it’ll be grossly hot and humid again before I know it.
It was super chilly last week! Definitely enjoying a little more inside time lately. Aww haha gosh my house plants aren't doing too well.... I can't seem to get the hang of them :/ Hope all is well with you, need to catch up on your latest videos tonight!
I planted my cabbages ,broccoli, silverbeet, garlic and onion a couple of months only the weather has been so cold here in Victoria Dandenong range’s that there has not been much growth on them . I have also planted later garlic in pots so it will be interesting to see what ends up growing better, today I hope to plant some more onion in my tree/bulb garden then I will be away for a month so when we get back at the end of august that will show what growth has really done. We have not turned the watering off so far this year as we are very low on rain
Sounds like an awesome mix of veggies you have planted! I didn't get around to garlic this year but I think if I did I'd have to grow in pots too as the ground has been too saturated. Gosh wish I could send some of this rain down to Victoria! It's crazy how isolated it's been this year!
I've planted flowers.. seaside daisy, coreopsis, penstamon, oesteospernum, salvia, and pansy. And then we had rain which is great because it is actually the start of our dry season. I've also been harvesting my first lemons.
When did you film this as you have sunlight. I am fighting the wet conditions. While i watch this I hear the rain bucketing down outside. Just planted some pre-germinated peas today. Lets hope they don't rot in the ground.
This was filmed earlier this week during all of that rain... the sun only lasted for about 30 mins and throughout the video I was constantly going inside then back out haha. Made it a bit challenging to get things done! Hopefully we have a few drier days now. Can't believe how saturated the ground is :/
The onions will grow it takes time. Nice plantings Robyn, watering is at a minimum with all this rain.😁 Planted mostly onions this year in Sydney. Started in February/March and still going with some Italian onions that usually grow later like now., also grew some carrots.
Yeah the onions have perked up even after a few days so I'm hoping they enjoy their new spot in the ground! Mmm would have loved to grow carrots, but something keeps eating them :/
Been watching you since before you moved to your current place. Learned so much about lazy gardening from you. So excited for you and Scott becoming parents. And somehow I feel like an Auntie!
@@Samandcolbygirls.2024 thanks so much for watching! We live in the Shoalhaven, south coast NSW and only get really light frosts a few days in winter ☺️
With your hardwood cutting have you tried honey as a rooting hormone since using it I have had much better results. Like you no food at the moment other than onion greens. The frost of the last week has killed a lot off the rainbow chard is still growing well as are the onions and garlic.I will be late in my planting this year as I hope to be away .here in the Dandenong ranges the weather has been very cold so not much growth or yard work the calendula are still flowering much to my surprise and bulbs have started to flower nerines nearly finished and the jonquil just started like yours. Just found your channel at last I am getting to find Australian gardens not USA or uk nothing wrong with them except I want more info on Australian time lines, have found a couple of Victoriaian ones thank heavens.
Relaxing video. Thankyou Robyn. We truly love our gardens and I, too, am enjoying the slow pace in the garden during Winter. I live in Melbourne Inner North and we are finally getting some rain. The soil was so dry. I harvested 10kg of limes, and boxes and boxes of lemons. We're enjoying the harvest of our oranges and mandarines. Winter is a beautiful season when you look close enough. It can easily be frowned upon. Happy Winter everyone!
Thanks Maria! So great you have some rain! I feel like it’s been so isolated on the east coast these last few weeks. Sounds like a beautiful harvest! Fresh citrus is the best 😍 Have a lovely week ahead 🌿
I should have listened to your video before I started mine yesterday. I had some old soil in some outside pots and put it in my bin before I put in my compostable food then added more soil. I see now I've done it all wrong. Do I need to empty this and start over?
