On a Chopin favorite, the Ballade No. 1 in g minor...
Barenboim was inspired to create a new piano after playing Franz Liszt’s restored grand piano during a trip to Siena in September 2011. Struck by the vital differences in sound of an instrument constructed with straight, parallel strings rather than the diagonal crossed ones of a contemporary instrument, he set out to create a brand new instrument that combines the best of the old and the new and offers a real alternative for pianists and music-lovers in the 21st century.

I agree on the fact that 5 minutes is a short period of time to listen to you. I admire how you are able to give us a great analysis of each piece you present in that period of time. The underlying fact there might be we really enjoy you talking about music which makes each video too short for our taste. Thank you very much for this video. At first, I agreed with previous comments concerning the amount of information you were giving. I required to watch the video at least 3 times to start understanding the masterclass you are teaching.

1:45 I'm unsure if that assessment is correct in every case, though it's certainly possible. I agree that the introduction in Chopin's Ballade No.1 seems more like a scaffolding, bringing the listener to the main theme; however, sometimes composition can be more fragmented. For all we know, Chopin may even have intended each section of his first ballade to be an independent work, each is so contrasting in mood and style. If you have a collection of themes, for example, where each is strong, though similar to each other, it's sometimes feasible to link them together with the correct transitions/bridges or introductions and produce a larger work.

This is not improvisation, LOL. It is Chopin note for note. It may feel like that to him, but it's the same notes. The key is in the theory. A-flat major opening run m(hald step above the key resolution LOL) to the top..then a pause, a brilliant pause, then a G-Minor cadence of .......V7-1 (D7-Gm)....resolve to the beautiful G Minor.... There is really nothing more to say here...it's brilliant Tertian harmony in masterful elegance.

From a musical point of view he has already told you everything. All the clues and hints you require to perform this piece had been said. As he said this is like a walk, you are telling a story, your story(guided by the composer). It is free implying that what you have to say must be very clear. Otherwise you might loose your ideas in the way. He also pointed out which are the important sections so you can construct your idea from there or the points you require to keep in mind on how you are gonna reach them. This was a great master class

Michael Davison well if you already have quite a good understanding of music , what he said does make it very useful when you are thinking about the over structure of the piece . Like he highlighted the beginning , it’s what catches people’s first impression, it’s probably the most important section as if it’s not attracting people’s attention when the first few bars come out , your audience will sit there for like 10 min ish staring into the sky .

Yes i enjoyed... admirable. Admirable.

I first encountered Daniel Barenboim at the Tel Aviv Mann Hall when he conducted the Israel Philharmonic in Mozart, playing and conducting a piano concerto, which amazed me at 20 (I was 20, he was 28), a young and compelling man, married to Jacqueline du Pre. It was 1972, before the tragic turn their lives took. He then conducted my chorus in the Mozart Requiem. I remember him vividly the first time I saw him play piano and conduct from the piano. How time has transformed him, and me, but I love his introduction to this famous Ballade. And then the dramatic finish! Yes, I have enjoyed this short episode of Chopin's Ballade! It brought back such memories. Earliest memories of performance.

Interesting idea Maestro Barenboim. Beautiful piano, such a great pianist (musician) should always make these videos with a really good piano. It is very interesting, Chopin is still considered, by many, the best composer of the romantic period even though he only composed for the piano (except for a few pieces). That says a lot about how great he was as a composer. Your explanations are very interesting and the nuances of the few passages that you played really show that you are a Master. I really enjoyed it. The video is too short, though (such a beautiful Ballade deserves, at least, 12 minutes). Given you are not only a great pianist but also a great conductor you could make videos about piano concertos. It is something that other musicians, who only play the piano, would probably not do as well or as interestingly as you can. You have a lot of experience. I'm sure you have a lot of gold (information) to share with your viewers. And please, you have to make videos about Beethoven sonaten (you play them all, marvellously) and Klavierkonzerte Mozarts. You are a living musical encyclopedia, we can learn a lot from you. Thanks for sharing and Bravo!!

Thank you very much, Mr Barenboim. My suggestion is Schumann's Romance in F sharp, Op.28 No.2.

This piano reallly needs to be voiced down. Hammer felt seems too dense causing a percusive sound like a Yamaha. Not worthy of a Steinway IMO...

Difficult to understand why the opening sequence is with Beethoven. Well, will you change your intro every time you change the subject? Probably not.

Not sure this is my favourite Chopin Daniel. I prefer Nocturne in C Sharp Minor myself, or Nocturne Op 32 Number 2 or Prelude 28 Number 4. This Ballade No 1 is to bangy for me - only my opinion though. Regards.
