I have been teaching over 25 years and you are dead on target. Teaching students how to stand to SEE their weld and not try to look through their hands or being in the fume plume is critical. And you are so right, students come in all shapes and sizes, left-handed or right-handed. Fortunately after I graduated welding school you have times that it is virtually impossible to weld with your dominant hand and the best welders I know become ambidextrous (can weld with either hand). Keep the outstanding videos coming!

Great advice. I did exactly that for the first 3 years of my apprenticeship. Each year while in school, I would ask questions. When the questions I had that didn't make sense during class, and was afraid to speak out loud, I would save for lunch, track down the applicable teacher and ask for one on one help to clarify the question in order to formulate the answer. It was a useful tool, that fortunately I only had to employ once. However there is usually some very dedicated educators out there, and appreciate when their students need help. The only bad or crazy question, is the question you fail, or are too afraid to ask because of embarrassment Ask, and keep on asking throughout your career. Never let anybody tell you different

First one is so true. Sometimes we are nervous of what people think or want to impress or we want to know it all. Just be honest and the more questions you ask the better. No stupid questions. You are paying to learn, get your moneys worth! And they only get better from there.

a good tip while in school is to see if you can get a small project put together. something like a tractor scoop. anything that makes you do something other than simple T welds on a workbench. ive mostly only done simple welds in my booth thus far and last night I was given the opportunity to work on a tractor scoop, welding a 2 meter (~6 feet) bar of steel into the back bottom of a tractor scoop and it was quite the learning experience. it was uncomfortable, difficult to position myself in order to properly guide the MIG (MAG specifically, MISON22 gas, argon with 22% Co2 mix and SF-3AM spool) gun, but I learned a lot and got some tips and tricks from the instructors! I made a nice mess of it, but I'm learning! it didn't turn out too too bad, but I ended up making a decent amount of work in order to take it from looking just meh to alright to excellent!

Mine was mainly my own stupidity. Entitlement thinking I deserved 25$ an hour starting out.. 15years ago. Then I got a stick plate cert 1st.. I'm terrified of heights so that was a waste and no one asked I was clueless. Spent 10years at different jobs got into hydronics welding pipe, fell in love went back to school on 1st lay off from weather and now have few years under belt doing that maintaining my pipe cert and want to start my own business mainly as a sub contractor but point is research what your wanting to do and if you can physically handle it. Great video keep em coming

Thank you so much for answering most of my questions about what to expect on day one of welding school. I am applying to Lincoln Tech. I have looked through the course description but am having difficulty deciphering between, Welding and Metal Fabrication Technology vs. Welding Technology. It seems that both classes have the same 4 types of welding. ie. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Gas Welding (GTAW/TIG).

you mentioned your technique is unique to you, a month or so ago I was watching videos, & some guy below 30, was welding & was my style, I had to call my wife to look, blew my mind, didn't care for his videos, but was just shocked as I could imagine me doing it, as it was my movements.as for your terms, I have never used new modern welders, with dig & arc control, so no idea how to play with those features only heat settings & fine tuning. all my welders are quite old. I know a lot of guys here are probably trying to learn on their own, here is a learning tool, get a 1"X1" piece of angle iron, lay bead after bead until it is 2"X2" & the ends are square, not tapered, this will help you run a straight bead, & keep a constant width puddle, & to not run too hot as approach the end, so can keep the end square all the way on each pass. once completer, make another one, then drill a hole in 1 side & weld a nut for a air fitting, then weld the 2 pieces together 2 make a piece that is 4'X4" now fill in the ends keeping bead even, until both ends are closed in, & the hole was for it to release pressure, now get a bicycle pump, pressure just a couple pumps, DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE! about 10-15 psi is all we want you to see as a beginner & submerge in water, if no leaks, you have completed a good first step.
@Welderbeast
@Welderbeast 5 лет назад
THAT IS WILD! Who knew you would see someone using your same exact technique! And that is a very good way to do at home testing of your welds, thanks for the advice

I start welding school tomorrow, always loved welding and blacksmithing and it’s 8 seasons each one being on a Sunday and the rest of the week I will be in special effects for the walking dead so only time I can practice is sundays. Right now in special effects I am not welding but when I get my certification it’s a much better pay and I will be using a trade skill. It is 1:24 am and I am trying to find some videos before I leave at 5 am but also I am nervous because all is happening is very rushed and so thanks for the video I just hope I know the paperwork part because I can’t do that stuff well.

Hey sorry everyone on the late reply, so honestly it was a bit disappointing just the one I went to seem like a scam. I got 2 grants for it and one of them was like only given to 1 person so it went from about 2,300$ to costing me about just 100$ and so that was super good but the classes them selves was not taught well at all. Keep in mind that I was working on The Walking Dead The World Beyond season 2 in special effects between taking these classes so I had to drive all the way from production just to make it to each class on Sunday and would work 6 days a week from 4 am to 11:30 pm night so there was no time for any rest and the drive from the classes to the movie set was 4 hours apart up and down so on Saturday at 11:30 pm night I would go home and get there around 4-5 am then class started at 8 am to 2 pm, after classes was over I would go back to the hotels at around 6 pm then I would buy food and stuff I needed for the next day to start and wash my cloths then so between class and that I had 0 time to my self. With that all said I was very dedicated to get to these classes and on the site it said you will get certified to be a welder and the certification is what I was wanting. Also the classes said online that we would do mig, tig, flux, stick and use a plasma torch through the class then after 8 weeks doing it every Sunday for those weeks we would have a test at the end and we would get our certification. Well how the classes went was the instruction there seemed nice at first and he was but he told all of us how we can make like 180k - 350k a year easily and welding will be a job you always will have work around and never worry about a job so we got to meet each other the classes was very chill when we started, there was a Big Ben full of scrap metal bars that we would go and get then had 4 stations we would all get in line and take turns welding 2 bars of metal together and get practice working on mig. The teacher would tell us the basic then have us go over there by our selves and he would just be around the shop but never relly with any of us but a few mins at the very end of class he told us what we needed to work on and he watched what we was doing while we welded before going home. The next week and he told us and every other week after that he never got any of the stuff he did not get gas for the plasma torch and they gave him the wrong supply’s for us to do stick, flux, plasma and tig we never did a single one of those, the whole course was only mig welding all 8 weeks even tho I saw 2 other guys that was not part of the class do there own stuff and they had use of the plasma torch so I do not get why we could not learn any of that. Also the teacher started after the second class showing up 2-3 hours late with the building being locked until he would get there and we waited outside in the freezing cold temperature for him to show up, he would go in and set up the equipment then just walk away so we all had to just keep taking turns working on our own stuff and he would at 1 pm take 1 hour for lunch and at 2 pm we get back and he would watch us for 1-2 mins tell us how we did and that was end of it. So the teacher only had mig for us to use all 8 weeks and only 2 mins of teaching with us just doing our own stuff and half the class just decided not to show up not worth there time but I wanted to be certified that at least was the only think I looked forward to having and why I would give up my only free day to learn this but it got much worse. On the 8th week we sat in class room and we had 1 sheet of paper going over us answering what the splatter balls are called, the Aragon and co2 mix is 25% 75% and when in class just those questions and other stuff we answered but the teacher just told us what they all was every answer as we just listen and wrote it down but he also after the test before we took it to get certification this happens. He said it is Easter Day and I know I want to spend time with my family and I know you guys have things you want to do on Easter so do not worry about coming in Sunday on the last day and I thought there would be a follow up class also because we had 2 classes canceled because cold weather well that never happened so the day we would have gotten certification he said he just did not want to be there Easter and because of that no one could complete the course then we found that was the end of class and from me receiving 2 money grants large ones since I did not complete the course they wanted me to pay back the 2,200$ because I did not take it serous so we contacted them and said there never was even a test to pass as he skipped it and the would not even move it to a later day the certification was fully canceled so they have not asked for the money again since and just shut up about it and I am so mad at them because I gave up my only 1 good day a week to sit through a class freezing doing nothing but only mig and I have my own Hobart mig welder at home, everything I did at class I would have done more with my own welder and RU-vid videos, he thought me nothing just said you are doing good you are doing good that is it and the drive time between work was more than exhausting. Also I would have quit that class sooner if I knew it was that pointless the only reason I went was with the promise it gave of us getting certified and they never even gave one person the bend test and he just did not want to show and I only saw him maybe 10-15 mins a day there. Thankfully I have all my welding skills to thank someone who I worked with on The Walking Dead he is a certified nuclear welder and pyrotechnics guy that was amazing and on the movie when I got a chance he would teach me some things and every class I went to I was 10 steps ahead as he thought me the right way to do it and took time to show me how he dose it and made me feel comfortable knowing I could do my own hold to how I am comfortable and he even taught me a trade secret he knows from doing it 25 years. I will say the class I went to was 100% complete scam and I am very disappointed at them for ripping me off so badly, I want to do a class again to get certified but just after that it’s made me almost give up on welding fully because the experience was a total nightmare for me and I learned more in 2 hours from a nuclear welder than I did 8 weeks of class. Money down the drain for fuel, time, skill and sleep.

Get a job as a laborer at a fab shop or repair shop. I been welder/ heavy equipment repair for 25 yrs and worked with plenty of school grads and all they know how to do is weld...thats it. Sometimes u layin in the mud welding rusty tore up steel that u can barely even reach ( or even see sometimes) so u learn to hold ur stinger in either hand real quick so forget right or left handed lmao. Yall always talkin bout "fit up" but repairing equipment there usually is no such thing. We do shit that yalls "teachers " tell u wont work but we make it work. Been burning rods and turning wrenches since 98 and aint never had weld come back. Forget bout all this technical bullshit these dudes are always talking bout. Yall wil learn more in a week on the job than a month at yalls schools. Real welders dont go to college.

gord johnson apparently you haven’t watched ALL my videos😜 I got a scrap metal build I did but if you are looking for further proof simply follow me on Facebook or Instagram @welderbeastx and you will get all the proof you need👊🏼 other than that all I can say is I’m sorry I’m not up to your standard of what it means to be a welder. I’m just an average guy trying to bring awareness about welding, I’m not here to prove anything to anyone😉
