Consider switching to an inverter generator that is 4x as quiet. You (and your clients) will thank me. 7018 is awesome stuff, but flux core mig is the cat's meow for working on thin cheap steel like that. And there are lots of multipurpose portable rigs that do both stick and mig, so you're not giving up the ability to use stick. And if you absolutely positively refuse to use flux core mig, buy some smaller diameter 7018 rod. You can do surprisingly delicate work with 3/32" or even 1/16" rod. You can also try 6011. Way easier to strike the arc over and over on these short piddly welds compared to 7018. Everything has its place.
@totalpkg6912

I used to use a bunch of 3/32” 6010 or 6011 when I was working the apartment stairs. Or solid wire mig when I was installing the handrails.
@solarguy6043
@solarguy6043 11 месяцев назад
Sure, why not?? You can weld with 6011 on AC, DC and any position. Does not need to be kept in a rod heater. Widely available. Inexpensive. Easy to strike the next arc without chipping off the flux, unlike 7018. It spatters more than 7018, but for piddly work on thin metal it's fine.@@totalpkg6912

@@totalpkg6912yes 6011 would be much better on paint and rust and is better at restarting your arc, the 7018 is a great rod but not for these small projects and this is my opinion and I’ve been welding for over 55 years

I grew up in VT, i learned to stick weld fenders. RULE #1!! do NOT allow a "proper arc!" Keep it sputtering in the puddle! When you need to stop- BE QUICK! Move the rod away with a snap, sort of. Takes 1/10th of a second to hole that thin sheet metal. Starting the arc is difficult! Get to a sputtering puddle immediately or you'll have a hole. Good luck!

A smaller electrode (3/32) is better for welding that thin tubing, it sucks and wastes time when you have to chase a hole, due to over heat or b/c railing like that tends to have moisture which corrodes the insides making it paper thin. When doing that kind of repair work, I prefer run a wire feeder. Even though I run everytihing MIller, the old lincoln weldpak 155 is perfect for this kind of jobs. You can run mig or flux with no issues, and .023 flux is especially good for thin repairs, and you can get a 15' replacement gun for added reach. I do like the mobile unit approach, keeps everything close and stops morons from stepping on or driving over cables.

Ideally this is what I'd like to do post welding school, just odd jobs. I'm in the dark though, how do you advertise your services or set prices? How do you know who's already in the market so you can set competitive prices? Well, I'd either like to do odd jobs, OR pipe weld out in the field, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to join a union for that which I don't want to do. I'm also unsure of which method of welding is most appropriate for any application. You welded a handrail in this video with SMAW, I imagine that's best for outdoors welding unless you get wind guards. GTAW for more delicate applications or where appearance is a factor? I'm still in school so I'm still learning, but I'd love to become a master at my craft and not have a boss to answer to (besides the customer). Additionally, don't you have to follow building codes for doing what you're doing or be licensed? Yeah, I've got a lot to learn still.

Great idea with the golf cart especially if you work on your own stuff. Unfortunately, in California I think you need a contractors license for work over $500 labor and parts! It’s one of the reasons it’s so expensive to live in California. It’s a stupid rule as it leads to lots of shady work by licensed contractors. It makes it difficult for very talented people who are semi retired or retired just to make extra income on the side and don’t want to deal with the red tape. All the money goes to people that don’t get their hands dirty to begin with.

Maybe a lithium battery bank built from some 300ah cells a inverter to run the plasma and stick. Are they 120v welders or 240v. The question is how many batteries are needed to run for the whole days work and can you charge them fast enough overnight so it's ready to go in the morning maybe a hybrid setup where you get a little quiet Honda generator to charge the battery while you aren't welding 🤷🏼‍♂️ I mean we rarely weld 100% of the time the Honda could probably keep up with how much your welder is using obviously the batteries would run the welder not the generator. Just an idea

Great vid! Just wanted to share my experience with using an inverter generator. I have a 13000W inverter generator and a regular Lincoln cracker box welder. I couldn't even stick weld with this setup without throwing the 100amp breaker. Even with the Lincoln set at 90amp, I couldn't burn a complete rod. I got desperate and disconnected the breaker and ran the wiring direct. I expected to burn up the generator, but it is still going strong somehow. I am able to burn 1/8 rods of 7018 completely at 105amps. Maybe this info can be used so the plasma machine can be used. I think this really points to the difference between how generators and true welding generators are designed. There are certainly some things I don't understand. I thought that the higher the amperage is set, then the lower the voltage is so the total watts stay the same. I would appreciate any feedback on a setup like this.
@TaylorWelding

Electricity is not my thing. Thanks for all the advice.
@williamthomas9463
@williamthomas9463 11 месяцев назад
I’m not an electrician by any stretch but the voltage output of the generator is a set value. The amperage that your generator produces is the limiting factor. The more output you ask your welder to put out the higher the amperage demand from your generator becomes. Are you running a 110/120 volt welder? If you are, you’re probably limited to a 20 amp breaker. If you run a 220/240 volt welder you’ll cut your amperage demand in half for the same welder output and you’ll then be pulling that amperage through a 30 ,40 or even a 50amp breaker.Remember, amperage is the volume of current available. You have plenty of watts to do what you’re doing with an inverter welder like a Lincoln 210MP. Also, watts divided by volts = amps available. By my calculations, you should have over 54 amps available, if the breaker will give you that much.

If I need to cut , I'll use a cordless cutoff wheel. Mobility is key. Great content! Welcome to my world. Maintenance welding is still welding. It may not be glamorous, but it will help pay the bills.

Hi, from another Taylor. Your suggestions and business plan here are spot on...but I'd offer one caveat for anyone planning this. Be sure to check your State's license/contractor laws. Here in AZ, if your job is over $1000 then you can't work on buildings as a "handyman"...and it wouldn't take many hours to exceed $1K. I got a call in response to a card I'd posted, asking about building some gates. He gave me dimensions and asked questions, then asked if I could install them on his building. When I said I couldn't, he said "Good, because I'm an investigator with the Registrar of Contractors and if you'd said yes I'd be visiting you to issue a citation." He was calling all the folks who'd posted cards or flyers. So, look up the regs and be careful folks... And, as always, thanks for the great videos sir.

@@TaylorWelding Yes, but I work primarily on vehicles (buses, RVs, conversions) so I've not sought contractor licensing.

They do stings in Florida but instead of issuing you a citation, they arrest you and take you to jail, impound your truck etc. They use bait houses.

that walks a very fine line on entrapment on their part.. its always great advice to check into local laws to save your own future though.

Killer setup man! One time I was moving a gigantic old schoolhouse and I needed to weld 4 -12@89# wide flange H beams 75’ long together to make 2 beams 12”h. X24”wide rails. I hade my Millermatic 251 shop welder running off of my Miller Bobcat 225 gas drive machine. I kept tripping breakers on the bobcat and couldn’t figure it out, called my Airgas dealer and he said “ explain your amperage and setup” I said I was running the mig at 250 amps off of the bobcat set at 225 amps and ………oh nevermind Craig , I got it!😂

I would love to do this. The hardest part is finding the clients. I also don’t have a generator yet. I do have a Toyota Tacoma, and an arc captain multiprocess though. Really want to start my welding business soon Also I’d rather use flux core and angle grind and clean the joints first before welding! Get much cleaner welds. I hate stick welding so much lol. I suck at it

I've got an M12 milwaukee port-a-band, it's bad ass. I've used the M18 ones too, they're overkill for most of what I do.

FWIW, I bought a Harbor Freight 5" portable band saw a couple of years ago to cut oilfield 2 3/8" pipe for a retaining wall. Probably have 100 cuts of that plus misc angle iron, rod and plate cuts, still on the original blade. I do give each cut a squirt of WD40 or equiv for lube. Might not be as handy as plasma for complex cuts but definitely cleaner than a 4" wheel and surprisingly controllable.

Looks like you and I are in the same business! 99% of the wrought iron at these apartments is 16ga. Do yourself a favor and go to Harbor Freight and buy a flux core mig welder. They’re cheap and run like hell. They’ll make quick work of that 16ga, much faster than those 7018s. Leave the sticks for the structural and pipe! Thanks for the great content!!

I have loved your tip for the white paint marker. I use them all the time. Let me try to give you one. I keep 1/16 6013 sticks for thin rusty metal. I've actually been able buttweld 18awg sheets metal at 10amps with this. I think I've also succeeded with 7014 1/16 as well. Keep the tips coming.

I'm also a fan of 6013 for thin railings and such. It doesn't penetrate as much as 6010, which is great on thinner stuff, but it freezes fast enough to fill holes.

My buddy that works at a welding supply store brought me some 5/64 6013 for a similar job i have coming up. Ran it @ 40amps and it welded beautifully. It also welded a lot smoother after i dipped it in water

Do an invoice and have a signature that says no warranty no liability for repairs. It’s a repair bro you can weld it and the rust will eat around it. Some people thinks it’s a extra to have a receipt and file it but very professional and can save you down the road

I've run 6013 at ridiculous low amperages with the polarity flipped and welded some incredibly thin material considering. flipping the polarity moves the heat from the workpiece to the rod from what I understand. I think it was 20 gauge, the welder was cranked down to something like 50 amps.

I'm looking at welding as a side hustle in the coming years including retirement just knowing how hard it is to get smaller but important jobs done like in this video.
