One thing I’d add, plan out your display and storage. You don’t want to be spending loads on model cars without having a proper space to display/ store them all. In fact, this is probably more of a reminder to long time collectors (including myself)
Pretty guilty on this. 210+ 1/64, 1/72, 1/87, scale and deformed style cars but no real storage and display planning, I just stack and store stuff until I realized "well shit, I can't reach some of these models because I stack them under some other boxes" Thinking to get some acrylic display shelves now or more stable stackable acrylic boxes to store most of the mid grade ones while keeping the ones I cherish most or value most in boxes that I can _actually reach easily_
I agree with all of your points, and I know this video is a couple years old, but the message rings true. It's too easy to just buy "what you want" online, which is the trap I fell into with a few brands, and reached a point where I suddenly tracked my spend and had a crisis after awhile. It's equally important to have a sales channel in addition to your buy channels. So PACE yourself, have an "out" to sell if you fall into a trap, and just question whether the car you're holding or viewing online, is something you really need in your collection, because there's a really good chance you don't need it, or won't want it after a couple hours, days, weeks, or months.
Something I would add to mistake #4 is I would like to keep 3 main reliable companys, for example: Mini GT, Hobby Japan and Tarmac Works (I normally Collect 1/64 so these are my go to Suppliers) or maybe if you want 1/18 you could go for Auto Art, Ignition Model, and One Model, since these companys are more reliable, they are a good gateway to collecting Die-Cast and Resin model cars.

hey James, lol the funny thing is when i went to japan shopping for tomica, ironically i had a list but i had bought a duplicate haha. i think with the more 1/18 scale resin or composite it probably be easier to remember what you have unless you have loads of them i think its okey to stick to one brand, i pretty much stick to Tomytec's TLV since its a pretty nice series to collect. i find its probably not the best thing to explore too many brands since obviously as you knwo the hobby can be pretty expensive in the long run. however i did end up getting my first 1:18 IG :) lol social media i find is good to check out photos and stuff and you may run into some rather interesting people.
i'm only looking at mini gt nad other brands at that price point because for me, that is where I am willing to go for a diecast model. if some inno64s or tarmac works appeal to me I might have a look

I try to buy all colour combinations of something I like. I am waiting for the new Ignition Nismo 400R. Only colour I wasn't able to order is the silver. The 400r is a dream car of mine. Missed out on the 1/18 400r.
That is true, not listing your ideal collection, that was my first mistake upon collecting 1/64 scales but when i research their history one at the time i find it more exciting yet expensive but i satisfied myself. Now im sticking collecting honda civics 1/64 except hotwheels brands
I'm starting to get into the hobby properly as ive always collected stuff like HotWheels/Premium and a lot of 1/18 cars but now I want to start to get collector grade im starting of at 1/64 scale but eventually ill get multiple scales im thinking I may be younger than most but as I have always had a love for cars it something I want to collect to make my room more of who I am and also to contrast the multitude of car parts I have. Quick question where did you get the RX7 from and the EVO just curious. Thx for hour very helpful videos.
good advice for collectors of any kind. but you keep plugging your store and your stuff is always way overpriced compared to most other diecast vendors.
