Definitely set up a class management system. I used bucket filling. I read the book, songs, watch the RU-vid video of the book each day, praise them when they are bucket filler verbally As well as mom Poms in their own labelled bucket or whatever way you decide to do it. It is very helpful and they really want to be a bucket filler to get recognized
Ms.May I know ive said it but im so glad youre back!! I have so loved the advice of a Godly Christian teacher. Thank you so much for answering the call to share your wisdom.
Yes to the emails! Calling is better-one of my former principals warned us about that. Simple emails are fine but when you get into behaviours or issues with other students, parents, academic concerns, etc.....it’s best to call. Good advice! I need to do more “love calls”. I send positive notes home but rarely phone calls. Good reminder. 👍🏾
The only “mistake” I feel that I make is the emails. I’m a middle school math teacher ... I have 180 students- I do the emails as a paper trail because... we have those parents that can tell you “you said ....” etc. I love your channel 😊😊😊 this is my weekly release & im a late subscriber but I binge watch 🍎
I have made every single one of these mistakes before! LOL! I completely agree with all that you said. We need to take time for ourselves so that we can be the best teacher possible. On another note, I would love to know how you do your first few weeks of school. Although I’ve been teaching for 12 years, those first few weeks always get me! I report back back August 1, but the first day of school is August 14. I’m already starting to think how to do those first few weeks. I know I need to teach procedures, I just have a hard time knowing how to do procedures and have school work in those first weeks. I’ve just never felt comfortable in the first weeks of school and I know how important it is to set the tone for the whole year.
I can definitely create some content about the first week of school. The first few weeks of school can be intimidating. However, those procedures are so crucial. SO be on the lookout for that kind of video in the future. Thank you for your support and have a FABULOUS school year. ((HUGS))
I agree teachers shouldn’t stay late every day.... but new teachers need to realize that it will take longer than contract hours to get things done. If you are going into teaching thinking it’s a set schedule, you will be highly disappointed. You need to manage tour time well and stay organized. The more you prep and plan, the easier your days will be. This doesn’t mean you stay until 8 o’clock every day but it will take more than the 30 minutes of prep time you might get after school.
I'm guilty 🙋🏽♀️ I work 8am-6 and still find myself staying a little longer. It makes it worse being that my own children attend school at the same school. Teamwork makes the dream work! And it starts with an open heart and a helping hand.
Another one of my favorite videos. I used to be that stay late teacher at my old school where I was so unappreciated. But now I’m at a school that I love!!!
The thing you mentioned about only contact during the negative situations with a student.. during my student teaching I would call families at the end of the week and let them know when their child was really setting the example during the week. It really blew me away how thankful the parent was to receive a positive call home and honestly was really wonderful!
Amazing video!❤️❤️ I remember my first year of working with my program, I use to always work, work, work. My director had to ask me if I spend time with family and friends on weekends 🤦🏾♀️ lol I said I do😂😂 however, I had to get things done in my classroom. This will be my Third year working with my program. I am much more calm and relax now. Everything else were well said Ms. May💕🍎
#1 is definitely my problem. My goal this year is to do better with that. I want to put myself on a time limit. I come early and leave late. The custodians might as well give me a key 😭. This year I will only do one or the other.
Do you have a standard pattern you use for positive and negative phone calls? You have such a bright personality that I'm sure you don't think about it. Any tips for those of us that dread the parent phone calls? Love, love, love your videos! ❤
Well, at the beginning of the year the first two weeks of school I make sure every student gets a positive phone call. I always start the year off with positive, positive, positive. Then when I have to make a phone call to a parent not so great, I do start off with something positive and then I go into the issue. I promise the more send parents positive notes, and REMIND texts with pictures it’s even easier to talk with parents. That’s even for the good and the boy so good. ((Hugs))
Lord knows! I needed to see this video. This is my first year teaching and I felt that He has led me to start using a timer to leave. Now I see why! Thank you sooo much!!
I wish I had found you back when I was teaching ESL at a title 1 school. I burnt out. I'm getting back into education now and I'm taking a different approach. Your videos are helping me
Omg thank you so much for this! I just found your channel and I love it!! I’m a 6th year preschool teacher and man, did I fall into so many if not all of these mistakes already. I love how not only you talked about them, but their solutions as well. Keep you the great work and I look forward to seeing more videos from you!!
Thank you for all the free resources! I am spending so much on my transition to Kindergarten and you have blessed me so much with the labels, reading logs, etc!!!!
I've been working alone for about three years. Its's really lonely, because I have no one who can really help me for the time. And youtube is the only way I can find a way out. I'm really glad to find you, and I wished I could get to know you earlier!
Thank you sooo much for your videos! they are always so helpful, I'm a high school teacher going into my 3rd year and I needed these tips! I also start August 12th as well! Praise God for you! Do you mind making a video about how you prepare for the school year? :)
