A lot of people (purist's) wont like it but I find using Programmed Auto can do a lot of the "thinking" for me, especially if I'm using a cheaper telephoto and I want to track moving objects. Means I can retain a degree of flexibility with "Program shift". An overlooked feature I think? cheers

Thanks for you video. Some great tips. I really need to use the min speed setting. I love aperture priority also. I do lots of manual shooting, but aperture allows me to concentrate more on the creative side, with less worrying about my settings, when pressed to get the shot before the moment has passed.

I would also like to add to your recomendation #4, put your camera to shoot at f.exe. high speed continuous. Reason for this is that the camera will shake when you trigger your shutter, but if you take multiple photos, shake will prob be minimal. Keep up the good work Pierre

Not wanting to hijack your pitch bro but, I recently watched a video 'How To CLICK Your Camera Like A Pro' Talks about reducing motion blur. The title sounds a bit cheesy but carries some great advise. Specifically about NOT holding your camera with your right hand so much, but shifting the weight to your left. And, the way to press the shutter release not with tip of your finger but kind of rolling your finger on the button instead of stabbing it. cheers 👍👍

Hey. When you’re talking compact body and smooth breathing, I would add mechanical preconstraint. I tend to use the neck strap for that. I get it as tense as reasonably possible around my neck and right arm and hand so as to minimise wrist and forearm instability. That stabilises one plane, I would say. And I know some people use a cord fixed to the tripod mount on the camera and just step on it to give some tension. That stabilises another plane. But it’s less natural and convenient than the camera strap method
@Pierretlambert

Good tips!!! I do use the strap yeap :) I even heard of ropes attached to the feet :D ps: new video is out!! Enjoy!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-njmKjuBt_Fg.html

I'm glad you mention the minimum shutter speed option. I hadn't heard it talked about before on youtube, but when I'm shooting in aperture priority on my newer cameras it's really handy. unfortunately in the situations where I need it, it's quickly overcome by the maximum automatic ISO that I set for noise control

You forgot to say that if you use a dx camera, then the shutter speed should be 1/(focal length X crop factor). so if you are shooting at 20mm you should not go below 1/30 sec :)

Good info, well presented. Auto ISO min SS issue is that not all cams display the selected ISO during shoot, or in EXIF data. The Sony A7ii, for example, will display “auto ISO” but to see the camera-selected ISO value you need to hold down the shutter half way. The selected value appears in the playback info, however. Is that the same for your A7RIII? Keeping elbows in is a good practice for all shots, in my view, not just for slower shutter speeds. In scene where you were running away on the gravel, I thought one of the stones you kicked came flying back and was close to hitting your cam.
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 5 лет назад
Hey Paul!! Haha yeap it did fly towards the camera!! Same here to see the iso selected by the camera I have to half press :) Thanks for watching!! Have a great weekend!

Thanks Pierre again for the great content! :) Here is one more thing to consider: long materials like hair, skirt, scarf can move very fast at their ends. Longer the material is, faster the movement (like the whip). So when you are shooting moving people with long things, crank up the shutter speed even more! :)

Some background on that thumb rule about using a shutter speed equal or faster to the focal length: That is a hack that does have some basis in fact that a higher magnification at the sensor also magnifies camera motion blur. So, yes, a longer lens demands a higher shutter speed to compensate for camera motion. Enlargement to final display size is a direct arithmetic factor in the degree of measurable blur. Twice the enlargement doubles the size of the blur. That specific thumb rule is was created back in the day when 35mm film was seldom enlarged more than 10x, that is, to an 8-inch x 10-inch print. Sometimes we went to 11x14; a 16x20 from 35mm was considered "extreme enlargement." That thumb rule presumed a 10x enlargement, 16x at the extreme. Today, we routinely enlarge more than 10x or even 16x, so the thumb rule is not really effective anymore. We really need to be going for as high a shutter speed as we can manage for the conditions and doing everything else to mitigate camera movement.

Are you referring to the actual 35mm equivalent? Or like what the lens says? On mft, double would be the correct way to go already

@teddydabear8772 5 лет назад
1/focal length does not seem to work any longer on very high megapixel DSLR without in body stabilization. Might have to double the focal length for 50+ megapixels since they are extra sensitive to the slightest camera shake.

@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 5 лет назад
Hey Camilo! If it goes below it means the max ISO has been reached and in order for you to take a decent picture the camera will have to force and have a shutter speed under the minimum you set. Otherwise your image would most likely be black :)

I don't really have an issue with getting "sharp" (or what I think is sharp) photos. I do however have an issue when I zoom in like crazy on a photo, that's when I tend to notice some blur. Just want to know if that's normal, or if it doesn't matter in the long run or what

Folks, don’t forget it’s a guideline and it was introduced back in film days, so on 24*36 without the same spatial resolution that we have had for ten years now. If you’re talking about a pixel-dense sensor (36+Mpx ff) and huge prints or heavy crops, then you’re going to need even faster shutter speeds.

Great information! But I just wanted to point out that inhaling and holding your breath is not very good. You want to slowly exhale, and towards the bottom of your exhale is where you pull the trigger, just before you run out of breath. Inhaling and holding increases heart rate and blood pressure. To competent photographers, it probably won't make much of a difference with shorter focal lengths, but it think it's a very good technique of you're holdiong a 200mm or longer.
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 5 лет назад
Hey Making! Good point, someone else mentioned the exhale a bit too. it's a good thing to clarify not to hold on "full lungs" as you mention. Do you block at one point when reaching toward the lower limit of your lungs or never? Thanks for watching :) See you in the next episode!
@LimitedSpectrum
@LimitedSpectrum 5 лет назад
@@Pierretlambert thanks for the reply! When I'm shooting (cameras or guns), I never actually stop my breath. I keep the gentle exhale going through the trigger pull. Actually, if you want to get more in-depth, I inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth. Seems I have even more control and smoother motion that way. But hey, I love your content! If you ever go to Los Angeles, let's go shooting together!

You breathe in then hold your breath? That makes most people shake. I was always taught to breathe out and hold it when using firearms so I use it with cameras as well.

Yeah good point it's not the best way to hold as you mention, slow exhale right?

@@Pierretlambert I wasn't actually expecting a reply! Thanks! Yes, slow exhale and when you're ready to take the shot, hold it (your breath). It slows your heart and helps to calm any shaking. I naturally shake a ton and have to use this for fast SS shots.
