Mind blown. I feel like nobody wants to get into the specifics of pigment attributes, and this is invaluable! I would appreciate even more information on this topic. And Lost Edges! I do not think I have heard this discussed at all, and though perhaps not as deep as pigment attributes I think it deserves it’s own video as well. And absolutely you might even do a series of videos about the application of darks and/or intense colors. Clearly this would build upon the first bit about pigment attributes. Often I watch an art video and want to speed it up because it is the 400th one I have seen about painting loose florals… this more technical information is to me like water in the desert. Thank you for so many well thought out videos!
Thank you for sharing those tips, when I click on these kind of videos, it´s always the same tips I´ve heard many times before, but for once, I´ve discovered new things I have never been aware of! 🙏Thank you Louise!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Great tips Louise. About the masking tape removal a small additional tip, if you pull the tape outside the paper, perpendicular instead of parallel to the border the tape will not damage the paper. The pulling force always will go from the inner area toward the border. At the borders the fibers easier separate from each other, if the pulling starts there the tape could keep adhered some paper layers and damage the paint. This is worst if wetness is trapped on the back of the paper, no matter how dry the front is. Hope it could help someone.💫❤️
Tip #5 - paint your darks in one layer--was incredibly helpful to me. I've been painting in watercolour for 5 years and felt frustrated because I couldn't get my darks dark enough. Now I know why, and how to correct it. Thank you so much, Louise. Love your channel and watch it all the time.
I absolutely LOVE your transparency… (no pun intended)… you are a dream to us learning. I am coming form oil, whew!!! So different and so much more to think about with water color! Thank you for your talent and insight! Keep up the great work!
I learn so much from your tutorials. You are so generous with all your knowledge and explain it so well. The lost edges are the best! Thank you for sharing so freely all the vulnerabilities you have experienced. You won't keep us newbies from experiencing them, but the comraderie is priceless. 😊
Thank you Louise. I remember the struggle when I first started painting just to recognise and remember the names of the pigments and the panic when I realised that they all had additional three qualities. I would have benefitted from your clear and concise explanation. And I do hope you have reached equilibrium.
Yes, I do wish I knew these 5 things earlier! This video answers why, after years of classes and painting, I often struggle to get the desired results. So helpful! Thank you!!! Love your content and your bloopers ❤ !
I love your videos! I painted in highschool. Art class. And since I graduated...lol 40 years ago...ive never taken a class. Now I have you! Youre so gentle spoken. You explain things so easy. Ive also had a couple strokes and your vids keep my attention. Love your instructions! Your trials and shares. Love your art. Happy day beautiful lady! Keep em coming!!❤
Thanks so much for your wisdom and for sharing what you've learned! It's a huge benefit to us who are starting. I know you put a lot of time into these videos! And your blouse is beautiful! 🌹
Thank u so much Louise for sharing so much information on watercolor painting. It will be very helpful. I learnt about lost edges tip first time in my life. Great 👍😊 I always love your bloopers. You are very sweet❤❤❤
Very helpful! I will watch again, no doubt. Your on-screen composure is so perfect, then seeing the bloopers I am reminded that you work hard at that persona!! Thank you for your vids.❤
Thanks Good I found you. I started days ago and have been seeing dozens of beginners videos on watercolor, and by each of them I had many not answered questions...til I find you, girl. And besides, you are mote my stile because I love Flowers and birds. Thank you. Hope to be soon in your patreon courses. Greetings from hot spain😅😊❤
Louise, you are the first and only person who clearly and visually explained what a lost edge is. I am new to water color and appreciate all of your tips and information. Your work is awesome and I always learn something from your videos. Thank you. Thank you.
Wonderful tips, as usual! In #1, something you said made me wonder: How effective (or easy) is it to layer a transparent pigment over a more opaque pigment? The reverse wouldn't work, of course, but I don't think I've ever heard any of you watercolor "gurus" talk about layering transparent over opaque. Maybe an experiment? Thanks Louise!
These are great tips thank you Louise! I will watch and rewatch this so the lessons go in😅 Love that you are brave enough to show the bloopers too, you are a wonderful human being!
Thank you Louise I always enjoy your tips and paintings, I was hoping you might say how you know if a colour is opaque, transparent or granulated before buying
Thanks Lyn. Sometimes you can read that on the tubes of paint. The paint manufacturers have a symbol system. There's often a little square on the tube. If it's blackened - it's an opaque colour and if the square is not filled in, it's a transparent colour. Check the paint manufacturer's websites for more details.
Yes, as a beginner, I bought several of similar paints... not knowing about pigments! Also, the same pigment can look different between 2 brands! I can't remember every variation of paint unless I kept a big chart for reference each time I painted! I suppose the answer to that is choosing colors before you start so you won't experience problems. Thank you! Love the clothes that they have gifted you! Awesome! Of course, I checked out the website!😅 I painted for a year, then as health issues surfaced, I have quit for a year... just beginning to swatch my favorites using different brushes! I will have to begin again! With love from a California Gramma ❤

Thank you! ❤ As usual, you post exactly what I need, like you've read my mind. I didn't know several of these, and have been working on learning the rest the hard way.
Thank you for another great video! All of your videos are so helpful! I'm looking forward for more instruction on how to start a project of my own, here or on Patreon. I know you already have some videos on that topic and I watched them all. For me, it has been hard choosing which colors to use. I also would LOVE more portrait videos! I love your teaching style and I know I would learn so much about portraits! That is my favorite subject but I have only done them with graphite. Thank you for all you do!!!
Great tips. That last one though! Oh my goodness! This has gotten me in trouble more times than I care to say. You'd think I would have figured it out by now. Doh!!
So glad your video popped up in my feed this morning! I had painted with acrylics over the years. Decided to give watercolor a whirl a yr or so ago. Admittedly, I have gotten more than a little frustrated. Thank you for sharing these great tips! Subscribed! P.S. Love the bloopers.
These are super helpful tips. I have more awareness as a new watercolorist from your channel and all your tips, thank you. And thank you for the bloopers,😁
Thank you for your wonderful videos, they are always so thoughtful and well made! Wondering if you might be able to make a video on your favourite watercolour brushes?
This is amazing! As soon as I’m home from holiday I will sign up to your Patreon. In the meantime, do you have any instruction that would help me buy the right brushes. Currently I only have Rosemary and Co botanical brushes from 000 up to 5. Thank you. ❤
Excellent information as usual. I’m really trying to focus on the limited palette. Can you tell us - how many pigments did you use in the poppies painting you showed when talking about transparency? The variety of colours in it is stunning.
Thanks so much Teresa. I'm not sure about the poppy painting. I painted it back in 2015 I think and I wasn't filming myself back then so I didn't take any notes about the colours I was using.
Dom, you are a brave man. I know of no one who would paint on air for the first time. Your painting was beautiful. You must have incredible patience. The metal for valor goes to you this week.
If you look underneath the video you will see a pale grey panel above all the comments. It says, "I'm sharing 5 more things I wish I had known when I first started painting in watercolour." Click on the word 'more' under that and it will expand for you. That's the description- there's lots of information there. Thanks Beverly.
You are SO incredibly valuable to me! Your knowledge, your charisma, even your "mistakes" have and are teaching me so much, Louise! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making these videos and helping us to become better watercolor artists than we ever could be on our own! ❤
Hi Louise, I stumbled upon you today and I'm so happy I did. You have wonderful tips, this is my 3rd video, I'll be learning from you for sure. Thank you.
I've been painting in all mediums for a very long time, but it's always great to get a refresher on watercolor, because despite what people may think, it's the most difficult to master!
Thank you for this useful tips...even though I know the most of them I struggle sometimes because I don't have enough patience for planning my work. But what I learned also today: don't use rough and heavy paper (Hahnemühle 600 gram) if you want to paint detailed ...the face of my young Ballerina now has furrrows in her face and the whole picture failed.
😅......Oh Louise, your quick side shuffle is so funny. Really enjoy watching you work. Haven't spent much time in Discord yet, but what a nice bunch of folks they are. Looking forward to participating when I can!
That last point with dark colours was perfectly on time: I am just painting an apple and the dark colours are lifting as I try to get the shadow area darker! Thank you!
I am just finding out that I need to pay attention to the pigments, definitely choose a limited palette set of colors, & apply the darks last & in one layer. Thanks for sharing these tips & the bloopers are funny to watch, when it’s your helpful crew.😁🥺
So useful!! Thank you so much! These are things that I feel will elevate techniques to a more professional level! I especially enjoy the concept of lost edges! You are so right about a lost edge bringing depth or movement to the subject! The painting of the boy, where you have the lost edge on his shoe, and it blends into the brown, really makes it feel like he's kicking up some dust from the ground! I can almost smell it! Just brilliant! Thanks!
