You missed something extremely important with “Beyond the Aquila Rift”: In the original short story, and the animation, the alien creature doesn’t “capture” or “feed” on anything. Ships accidentally end up in the nest, and it takes the burden upon itself to telepathically feed a comforting simulation into the minds of those who are unfortunate enough to become stranded there until they peacefully pass away. The alien in personality is like a hospice nurse. It cares for you until you ultimately die from starvation and dehydration. It’s truly a tragic story with no malevolent being in sight. That’s what makes it so powerful.
@cylontoaster7660
@cylontoaster7660 5 лет назад
Right, it shows the human bias. We see the (to us) grotesque spider-like creature, the nightmare like reality, and immediately assume it is sinister and evil. But if you step back and look at the situation more objectively and try to remove that bias, you begin to see why the sinister aspect doesn't hold up.
@giogiolachance4313
@giogiolachance4313 5 лет назад
that's not how a spider operate. telling you that everything is fine and that she only want you good is actually quite common in an abusive (and toxic) relationship. so my point of view is that the spider is a vilain and she disgn a space web to trap space ship. this is not a samaritin story sry.
@Cosmicgiant5070
@Cosmicgiant5070 5 лет назад
@@giogiolachance4313 it doesn't even look like a spider when you really look at it. you can't say that it would act like a spider since its an alien that can talk through the mind and it doesn't seem advance enough to capture ships it just looks like whatever makes humans travel through space has a glitch thats sends humans to this place that they can't survive in.

People always miss the point with stories like this. If you ended up stranded somewhere and couldn’t leave, the next best thing for you is to at least have someone to share the loneliness with. No one wants to suffer through isolation and the alien great gives them a much better outcome
@Zehaha2
@Zehaha2 5 лет назад
@@giogiolachance4313 If you see the spider and go "it's evil" just based on that, then you are a prime example why the stroy is so good. Most would assume that the spider is evil, but the whole point (of this fictional story with a space creature we just happen to call a spider) is that she is good. What "real spiders" or "abusive relationships" are actually like is completely irrelevant. This is fiction, thus can be anything the creator wants it to be. And the creator wanted to tell a story of a scary looking benevolent being, who didn't even want to show the real horrible reality, but Thom insisted so she out of kindness obliged him, and then to save him from trauma erased his memory.

I agree. Saw a few reviews that saw the same thing this guy did....but only one review and your comment that saw things the way I did. The creature seemed to actually care about the “lost souls” (her/its’ own words) that we’re stuck there. Why else would she put the effort into creating a false reality for them or let them waste away like he was prior to feasting on them?? Seemed to me she was just trying to make their remaining time as comfortable as she could with the false realities....since due to the error/glitch, all those ships traveled so far away for so long that they’re screwed either way.

@@twdjt6245 That was my take away too. I think it's because of everyone's pop culture knowledge, just because we see a monster with big fangs, the conclusion we go to is that it's going to eat them. I think this story was far more clever than that. I listened to the short story it's based on and Greta says something similar, that she places the lost souls in a simulation because they cannot cope with the reality of the situation and they would just waste away in horror. I watched it with a friend and his take away was that Greta may have been a part of a hive mind species. A abnormal creature living a lonely existence and that when the ship crashed in to her lair, she had no food or resources to physically help them and that the only way she could do was simulate a reality to make their passing at least bearable.

You're wrong about the alien in Aquila's Rift being evil and wanting to eat him or something. She's a being caring for all the lost beings that get sent to that junction by an FTL mistake never able to return. Thom is the first human, and she's trying to figure out a way to care for him without him going insane about being surrounded by nothing but strange aliens. It explains more in the original short story.

@@wallride2wallride The way the original guy's face is perceived is ageing and the woman who fights back dies a quicker death because she cannot handle the reality or at least I think so unless they've died naturally ageing through time. The whole mind trick thing is to keep himself from seeing the truth and works in the end but its interesting how others see it different, they leave most of these episodes very open to leave the viewer wanting more and finding ways to explain its happenings.
@twdjt6245
@twdjt6245 5 лет назад
Exactly. Like why bother creating the false reality for them if she’s just going to eat them? And why let them waste away prior? She realizes that they’re so far from home that they’re all screwed either way so seems to me she does truly care for the “lost souls” and was just trying to make their time comfortable in the time they had left. What’s interesting to me is that all the reviews by males that I’ve seen assume the same thing this reviewer does....that she’s capturing them and eating them...whilst the only people so far I’ve seen or read from that see our way of things have been females...... Wonder if that is pure coincidence or if it has anything to do with the creature being hideous.
@Chuanese

@@twdjt6245 ok bud let's not hijack this for your own agenda. Most people I talked to as agree the spider isnt evil in nature, the crew that wakes up was actually his brain letting him know something is wrong. The fact she told him the truth when she didn't have to should be prove enough the nature of the the spider aliens. When I watched this I am pretty sure, it was about illusion our lifes, for example everyone has some trouble in their life they are going through, however we choose to ignore the trauma or difficulties and live in a illusion of something greater.
@Shauniiiiiiiii
@Shauniiiiiiiii 5 лет назад
@@twdjt6245 super interesting take, and I don't think it's part of any agenda to point out your observations. Maybe these guys are seeing Greta as a kind of succubus figure; seeing as she starts off sexy and seductive, then is revealed to be monstrous and the man she's been focusing her attention on is shown as having almost wasted away, so they're assuming that she must have been the cause of that. Whereas women are identifying with her having caring intentions despite her ugliness because we've all felt monstrous and been perceived as monstrous from time to time. I suppose it all comes down to how people are perceiving her telling 'white lies;' does her lying to protect his feelings/sanity indicate she's just a lying bitch in general with malevolent tendancies, or is she genuinely trying to do her best to help? Idk why I'm diving so deep with this 15 minute short but it was really fascinating and definitely the one that stuck with me the most!

I actually think the symbolism in Fish Night is a lot deeper. For me, it symbolized the old man's journey as a sailor and how he lost a son or friend. Being salesman stranded at the desert is actually two sailors stuck at sea. Perhaps their "poor sales" lately was their poor catching of fish. And to take a break from the stress, the young man sees fish in the water and decides to take a swim, but is taken from a shark. At least that's what I thought of it.

Amazing how you saw this, the fact that I interpreted it like the vid shows gives me a reason to watch most and this episode a few more times to see theories like this. Although a desert is practical in what you're saying maybe if it was more influential to sales but the same principles where their abilities/skills are useless would've added an extra layer but that would've taken the "fish motive" scene out which is unique to it's story. I just caught a simple but minor thing that may not or maybe useful is that his son is less experienced hence he angers out, wastes his energy while the old man as experienced is composed, calm, forgiving but also sharp enough to survive the "drought"

For #1, The creature doesn’t feed off the crew. The story is taken straight out of a book. The creature is actually loving and benevolent and is putting them in a pleasurable virtual reality, because they can’t face the reality that they are stranded forever with no hope of rescue in an alien environment. Tom’s muscles were wasted from not moving for years. Not from being fed on. Who knows how many times he’s been in and out of the false reality and can’t handle his true reality. Being in and out of hibernation without a functional pod has withered his body. The creature is just so hideous that the moment clearly traumatized Tom, so the creature has to put him back into the false reality over and over again. Suzy represents Tom’s subconscious mind. Every time she is awakened the subconscious instantly rejects the false reality. If you go back and look at min 5:30 of that episode you can see the creatures true form through the bottle.

Personally I like Black Mirror more, but I think it’s all about taste and what you’re looking for in a sci-fi anthology. Black Mirror as a show has one big message about one thing, while LD+R has more things it can showcase. I think the stories in Black Mirror are also a lot more realistic, which can give a more personal and gut wrenching story which the show is now infamous to bring. On the other hand LD+R is a lot more about being extremely flavorful in a shorter amount of time, they each have their strengths and weaknesses. Think of the difference as Black Mirror being a sword to the stomach, and LD+R being a shotgun to the face. Pick your poison :)

Why does everyone assume the creature in the Aquila Rift is trying to "feed" off of the crew? I've noticed this pop up in several videos. It's obvious some people don't understand how space horror works. The "horror" isnt how creepy the creature is. It is the terrifying reality and utter hopelessness that the creature was trying to save them from that is true horror. Ugh. It makes me truly sad that this is how people are perceiving this episode.

Beyond the Aquila rift is more, to me, a story about appearances being deceptive. The creature understands what is going on in the world around it. Thom does not. The creature has had to do this for possibly hundreds, if not thousands of different people and species...imagine being a hyper-intelligent, sentient creature, and being telepathic, imagine being bombarded by the fear, the anxiety, the doubt, the panic, and all the emotions that come with realizing you're stranded and that everyone and everything you love is long-since dead and gone, and that you were forgotten long ago... Imagine being this creature, and watching other life-forms suffer and die in fear and sorrow...Imagine not wanting to see people suffer like this...imagine if you had the power to help them cope with it by changing their memories, helping them forget their sorrows, their agonies..imagine being able to show them a reality they will be comfortable with until the moment they die... It takes a great deal of empathy to not want to see others suffer...the creature was a benevolent alien, who didn't want to see victims of hyperspacce accidents like that suffer needlessly, withering away in fear...It felt that to die in relative comfort was the only solution to an inescapable situation... It comforted them, it fed them with memory, kept them from feeling hunger as they wasted away...it ccared a great deal for those whom had found themselves trapped in it's expanse...it was compassionate, and despite it's actual appearance, was benevolent and caring. Looks can be deceiving in more ways than one..and sometimes, that's not at all a bad thing.

From my perspective, all the episodes had a certain real life meaning, for example, Beyond the Aquila Rift , it's more than just a crew caught in an alien spider's web in deep space, the whole episode represents everybody's real life struggle for truth about the world ,why we exist, and the fear of the unknown, for instance, mother Earth is our home which represents the spider. She gives us all the resources that keep us alive, but at the same time we are limited and cant seem to leave our personal "web" of space. As humans, we live in this "simulation" in which we created from our own minds that we call "life", work, religion, technology etc. knowing that in the end , slowly but surely,we all eventually parish never knowing our true purpose except to love one another. if we actually found out the truth of our own existance, we probably would still choose to live in the "simulation" , because it's safe and all we know.
@justalegendb
@justalegendb 5 лет назад
I disagree, there is no other alternative to earth, it's just earth, we were born to live, love, and die happy. It was our spawn,, and there are some really shitty things that happen on earth and some things people are born into problems that they can't control like birth defects. So to say that we're in a simulation and are secretly living worst is blasphemy imo. People always ask why do we exist, rather than what can I do with my existence to be happy? And not worry about why, rather than how. The purpose of life is to make a purpose, I personally feel like the alien was more of a hospice nurse like someone else said who takes care of a patient with a confronting world with little to no problems, that's not true life and not even close to living on earth.
@justalegendb
@justalegendb 5 лет назад
Had a little mistake in there but it's fine lol.
@seerspace2292
@seerspace2292 5 лет назад
@@justalegendb Your mistake was that you clearly didnt understand that I use "simulation" figuratively, meaning not in a literal sense; a metaphor, to describe the world we live in and how we made it to fit our own needs. Hence the quotation marks... I believe in God and the Devil, but it's not blasphemy to know that we created and are separated by religion, work for each other for money, worship technology as a means to distract us. We aren't truly free to live, it all has a cost..Btw there's nothing wrong being born with a birth defect, I know plenty of people who were born different and they live their lives better than a lot of others...Yes, people can make their own purpose, but that doesnt change the fact that we have limits purposely put on us to hold us back just to attain a bit of happiness. I never said anything about living the worst.. nor do I think that. I did pretty much say that everybody has this innate desire for knowledge and fear of the unknown, which follows all of us until the day we die. The only true purpose we know is to love one another until our inevitable end. Earth is a nurse ,we are all her patients, she nurtures, provides for us so we may live, yet we use up all her resources, with the ultimate goal of leaving her to find a new world to call home, because if we stay, we perish.
@justalegendb
@justalegendb 5 лет назад
@@seerspace2292 I respect your opinion man, but it just seems extremely negative and unnecessary, We need money, we need limits because without limits, there is no balance in the world. But it is still possible to overcome those limits without breaking them, we live life not only to love, but to laugh, push ourselves, accomplish our goals, and to make peace with the world and ourselves before fading away. I meant a severe birth defect like massive permanent brain damage or being paralyzed from the neck down and having no one to support you. I never said I don't believe in a religion, just a different kind, I believe when you pass away you get a choice, I don't even know why we're giving ourselves headaches over this, just enjoy yourself with the time you have lol.
@seerspace2292
@seerspace2292 5 лет назад
@@justalegendb I dont mean to seem negative, I completely respect your thoughts and beliefs as well, i rather enjoy conversation such as this. Trust me I totally enjoy life and like hearing other peoples world views. From my point of view money, for example, is one of those "simulations" we created, what is money besides a bank note that has complete control over our lives, we use it, work for it, all the way until we leave this world, just to have our future generations do the same, I do not wish it upon anyone, I want the lives after us to know true freedom, we dont need money for that to be happy, we can do all you said without it and still evolve. These man-made limits were set in place to control the world and its inhabitants. The Earth existed and thrived eons before us, then we slowly started degrading it, if there was really balance on this world we made, how come we're not at peace with each other as a whole, working as one? How is it that we're so disconnected ? It's because it's unbalanced. The universe itself was created out of chaos, and is in fact chaotic, yet it's able to balance itself out to become peaceful, it's limitless. I dont know why either but it intrigues me, glad to have had a civil conversation, I'm going to stop now. Have a good one. Peace friend.

I don't think you really got the end of aquila rift right. This spider creature doesn't feed of the stranded beings. Everyone including the protagonist look like they starved to death so the creature doesn't eat them. Or maybe it does but after they died. The creature really cares for the poor souls captured in that net. The creature keeps them inside a simulation to ease their death, by simulating them beeing around loved ones. What sense does it make to wait for the people to die and keep them in a simulation when the spider could just eat them right away? This episode is based of a short book with the same name and i believe in that short story it gets explained a little better.

One of my favourites was the Ice age episode, where in the end before the civilization goes into another dimension, the orchestra rise and mini space cars fly around the apartment, that orchestra score gave me goosebumps.

he does remember everything at end of Aquila Rift. He was show. The actual reality and when he disliked it, decided it was better to live in a fake reality, and that’s why when the blonde girl comes out again they say hello faster, like they already know each other well but they’re pretending to be clueless. They’re going along with the game

I don't even think the creature in Aquila Rift is evil or bad. Just because it looks creepy? Why should she (or it) show him the reality if it only wants to feed on them in some kind. I think she really wants to help them because she knows there is no way in returning home. You don't know how often he already has woken up in that strange place. Maybe what she is doing, is giving them some kind of palliative care.

@Solve Everything its not a spider tho. its a space alien creature. also why would it voluntarily remove the "sedation" from its "prey". i think it was was unable to help the crew in any way and therefore kept them happy till they eventually died of starvation.

Why do so many people misunderstand Aquila Rift? A major plot point is that she's benign, but that her "victims" cant look past the visuals. Then this video commits the same error and jumps to "evil alien" conclusion despite all the indications towards her being benevolent.

that's not how a spider oparate. telling you that everything is fine and that she only want you good is actually quite common in an abusive (and toxic) relationship. so my point of view is that the spider is a vilain and she disgn a space web to trap space ship. this is not a samaritin story sry. the only indication of her being good is her word and they are lies wake up people.

you would stand still from a "don't be scared" and then get eaten alive by a monster alien good job on non biais inter-species tolerance.

The alien doesnt feed on the crews or the ships. The alien is stuck there just like they are but it basically tends to people till they die. Like a caretaker.

I don't think so... Definitely she's feeding on them, she's got her web all over the ship...besides she's in space, on what she'll feed on if not on them...she seems an organic creature not robotic, so she's gotta eat

I still barely understand fish night But it's the still the most powerful for me because I don't understand it - It's so colorful, and the music is just amazing I feel something from it, and it's great for interpretation.

I thought it was about finding joy in life outside of sales and work. The car broke down and the men found themselves actually able to take a moment and enjoy the calm. But then the son commits suicide by jumping off a cliff due to the pressures of work. Then the dad mourns his son at that location each year, as his son is just a ghost now.

Just finished the season. A lot of the episodes had great moments. This wont be a popular one but I was in awe at the rendering in Shape-shifters, with that one take shot of the protagonist jumping through the destroyed camp

So glad I checked this series out. Thanks for the recommendation BrainPilot! The 3 robots episode was probably my favorite... followed by the civilization in the freezer, reminded me of the Simpsons episode. I love how each episode is completely different from each other, not only visually, but with the story telling. Have you checked out the RU-vid channel “DUST”? If not, do yourself the favor as this series instantly reminded me of the short films posted weekly on DUST... lots of incredible sci-fi shorts with beautiful visual effects.

I definitely have a werewolf fetish, but I loved Shape-Shifters of how 1) they portrayed them as ordinary soldiers, just definitely beefed up (little armor, no weapons or shoes) and 2) how supernatural creatures, if real and attempted to coexist with humans, would be treated in society and what roles they would fill.
