Overview of some recent modifications I made to a Carry On Utility Trailer. Addresses changing a tire with a tongue jack, Toolbox choices and why, protected and improved wiring and lighting with LED lights. Trailer gate modification with an gate assist. Great spare tire mount and also upgrading the springs on a 2000 lbs trailer
For those asking about the Pro Plug, here is a link to the $35 unit I used in the video: www.proplugproducts.com/?wpam...

Your additional male mounts for the tongue jack, is very clever! As with most inventions, it seems obvious in retrospect, but I've never seen this before. I'm going to do this to both of my trailers! Great idea!!

Stumbled across your video while researching e-track for my 6 X 12 dual axle. That Pro Plug is EXACTLY what I was trying to put together in my mind as an alternative to having the wiring harness exposed 24/7 for quite some time. I have flexible split loom on mine but you have to pay attention to it as it does degrade over time, especially here in south Florida with our super-duper sun. Don't have to create something that has already been created ...... just ordered one. Only negative ...... they are closed for the entire month of December! But, not a big deal, been this long without it another month isn't going to make any difference. Nice video, thanks.

Not gonna lie I’m stealing more than one of these ideas. My trailer is close to 70 years old and the frame rails rotted out (old boat trailer) I think the only thing original on it now is the tongue. Love that pro plug and everything else about this build. Great job.

First off I personally wouldn't buy a box store trailer but, you have added some really smart ideas to it that's definitely a winner. Building mine from scratch as at the scrap yard the steel angle and tube was still way cheaper and stronger.. The axle with leaf springs, fenders and good tires/ rims were free, got lucky. Your add on's are fantastic as your perspective gave me great things to add in that left me with forward direction rather than saying later, "Damn That's such a good idea I need to go add that", it will be on it right out the gate Thank You.

I have the Lowe's 6x10-ft Utility Trailer with Wire Mesh all the way around and the Ramp Gate. I noticed that your mesh is welded from the top when down which I wish I had. I was carrying something up the ramp when the mesh gave way under me. If it were on top like yours, it probably would not have broken. Now I have to wield angle iron around the outside over the mesh because I don’t trust wielding the mesh. Also I found that I don’t really have much to tie off to and have broken the mesh on the sides as well so I want to wield tabs around the sides to attach hooks to. My trailer already had the jack in front, but I bent it after forgetting to jack it all the way up. I thought about buying a fold up jack to replace it, but was worried about drilling into the A-frame because it had all the wiring run through it. I also lost my license plate because it had a plastic mount. I sometimes load it without being connected to the truck and the rear goes down to hit the ground and I’m thinking of welding a jack or something on the back to prevent that from happening. I’m tired of looking for large rocks and such to put under it because my jack stands are too tall. I don’t have a spare tire and I really like how you have yours set up so that you can easily lift the trailer.

If I could make a suggestion. My trailer has a 2" square tube at the front of the deck. It is 18" off the deck. I carry two spare tires that ride on axle stubs and spindles. By carrying them this way it also gives two sets of bearing ready to be swapped to the trailer axle. It works well. I have had a bearing go out and had to change bears on the road. The bearings on the spare tire racks are pre-lubed and ready to install. Before this I had carried spare bearing and a tube of grease in the tool box. 50 years of towing various trailers this is by far the best way to carry backup bearing. Just thought you would like the suggestion. Great video.

Great idea on small trailers! Hopefully many read your comment. I am building one with a 3500lb axle and electric brakes. Since the brake drum is the hub, this suggestion is not as ideal with brakes, but on these small trailers- a wonderful idea!
@acklan3
@acklan3 4 года назад
👍 I understand. My trailer is a two axle car hauler with a tilt deck. You are correct that a spare electric brake setup is difficult but you can still run a non-brake hub. You would not have brakes on the affected axle but it would get you off the side of the rode. Like I said just a suggestion. great video. Because of this video I will be welding a 5k jack behind the axles on each side of the trailer. I think that would be a $200 well spent.

Great mods indeed + I'll add few ... 1. UNDERCOAT trailer frame, steel or aluminum with some oil undercoating only (Fluid Film and such), take care of rusted frame above deck as well. 2. Weather proof (Thomson sealer) top and bottom of wood deck and do it as often as necessary. These two things are the MOST important ones you'll ever do to extend trailer life. 3. Install telescopic stands in the back of trailer, work great for loading/unloading heavier loads + when storing, you can lift the trailer off the ground.

I appreciate the comment. I'm actually surprised this has never been done. All these trailers with a "set-back-jack" to clear the tailgate would be much better with this design- though ai may be a little biased!😉

If you subscribe and ting the bell, you'll get the notification when I upload it tomorrow. Thanks for watching this video, and I appreciate you taking time to comment!

Great video man and great idea! I’m gonna do this to my trailer and spare tire on a spindle! Extra bearing too!!! Another guy commented with the spindle idea. Didn’t want to take credit for someone else’s idea! Super Kool!

Thank you man. Got a bit stalled with the cold weather, but more videos coming soon. I agree the spare spindle was a great suggestion! Plenty of sharp guys commenting on this one.

Got one other tip for ya, instead of using those 2 x6 boards on the floor of your trailer. Go buy some 3/4” or 1” waterproof plywood and you can get the plywood covered with plastic laminate on both side of the plywood too. If you use 3/4” thick plywood, I doubled it up on my floor of my trailer making it a 1 1/2” thick. Since my trailer was a 5 x12 trailer I put a 12” seam on the plywood floor on the left side with the first piece of 3/4” plywood then put the seam on the right side for the second layer of 3/4” plywood. It will never crack, warp, twist, and will outlast any of those 2x6 or 2x8 etc for decades! Put this on the floor of my trailer over 10 years ago and still looks like new for the most part other then some scratches on the laminate where I’ve used a shovel to get out dirt, gravel and bark dust. Which with the laminate on the floor it makes sliding a shovel across the floor slick as can be having nothing to hang up on like splintered wood on those 2x6 boards and no spaces between boards also means no materials like dirt can fall thru the cracks since it’s a solid floor with the plywood and I guarantee the plywood will hold way more weight then those 2x6 will too! Even if the waterproof plywood cost more? The fact that it outlast the 2x6 by literally decades and you won’t need to have to spend the time and expense of replacing the 2x6 boards. Over time you’ll find even paying more for the plywood still will be cheaper over time to use as a trailer floor. Just amazes me that more people haven’t figured out that plywood and even CDX plywood better then those 2x6 boards for so many different reasons. Having plywood got those several layers all glued together and each layer has the grain running the opposite way that makes more strength as well as more stable material than any solid board ever will be! Back when I was a poor boy and couldn’t afford waterproof materials like I used now. I just used regular fir plywood on my trailer floor and put a sealer on it. That floor lasted over 15 years before I ever had to replace it and the trailer sat out in the weather year round too! You will never be disappointed if when you need to replace those 2x6 boards and you change to a good plywood floor you’ll never go back to using solid wood boards again I promise you!

great video love the upgrades, iv got one more for you that a trailer dealer suggested to do Take some Thompsons water seal to the planks it not only keeps them from soaking in water and making your trailer heavier but it keeps them in good shape. even if you have old planks it cant hurt

@@Chugwater_Cowboy I appreciate your reply. I had seen a video of a guy using a 5 part hydraulic oil to 1 part diesel oil on a trailer deck. Said you could kneel on it after 24 hrs and not stain your pants. I certainly have enough wast oil, diesel oil etc to try this. I'm gonna post an update on a new trailer build. If you see a new video, I would appreciate your input on the decking (or anything else). Thank you!
