I’m your fans from Indonesia, I watch almost all of your videos, great job. Some of your content just remind me as I studied in overseas/Germany, as your experience as a foreign asian student quite similar to what I had before. :) Salam dari Indonesia
@@WhatThePho Your videos are fking good seriously! Thank you for sharing Vietnam! I can't wait to go there for the 4th time! But this time, I will finally go to Hanoi. BTW you both look good together :)
Thanks for this video. I knew a bit about French influence on Vietnam. It is nice to get more info on the French inspired Vietnamese food. Now I am going to try to find them in Canada.
It's nice to see you again, Van. You did a good job presenting favorite Vietnamese dishes to people all over the world. I can't wait to make a trip back to Vietnam and try all of those dishes. Good job, Van.
Will Vietnamese accent is so funny haha I Love especially the Vietnamese banh mi paté, I finally discovered how good a sandwich really could be in Vietnam !
Hi Van Vu!! Your channel is fantastic, and I am so proud to have someone such as yourself to represent our culture! Although the French influence on the Vietnamese culinary tradition has been discussed extensively, we never hear of how Vietnam had rescued a French cultural heritage out of oblivion in the 1950s - la cuisine Provençale! Provençale cuisine was a derivative of Roman cuisine in the French Mediterranean. Just like the Roman garum or modern Italian colatura di alici, Provençale cooking uses pissalat - a fish sauce made from salted anchovy. After World War II, the production of pissalat came to a grinding halt, and the ingredient almost became extinct. This was important because it was a traditional ingredient in the pissaladière, an onion and anchovy pizza specialty of Nice, the capital of the Côte d'Azur. During the early 1950s after the decisive Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ, many Vietnamese resettled in France, especially around Marseille - the traditional Mediterranean port of entry from Indochine to France. Guess what these Vietnamese brought over that virtually rescued la cuisine Provençale? Nước mắm! Yes! We saved a French culinary heritage from extinction! The French news magazine L’Express featured an article about a decade ago on “Le nuoc mam, sauce de poisson miracle du Vietnam.” Even in French cookbooks or blogs on how to make pissaladière, nước mắm or mắm nêm were recommended as substitutes as these were “ironically easier to find than the authentic pissalat.” “…Vous pouvez aussi utiliser des produits asiatiques, comme le mắm nêm des vietnamiens, le plus approchant à ma connaissance, ou pourquoi pas, un nước mắm concentré, deux produits paradoxalement plus faciles à trouver que de l'authentique pissalat…” Hi Will, I also subscribe to your quite amusing channel. You had indicated in the video that there is no snail soup in France. Keep up the good work both of you…so happy you are here to promote the Vietnamese culture!!! I am using Phúc Mập's words: Một hợp tác quá dỉnh!!!!
@@WhatThePho Speaking of connection, how is it that you or others in VietNam *no longer know French* ?! 70 years of Indochina.. and nothing ? Wow the downfall. In Morroco or Algeria everyone is almost bi-lingual. 😐
In a tropical country like Vietnam and many others, at a time when few people had a refrigerator, condensed milk allowed a longer shelf life and also when the can was opened. For example, in the West Indies, until the 1970s, condensed milk was much more widespread than fresh milk.
Thank you for sharing your interesting Channel I love your presentations and you have really caught my attention you are a very good educator on Vietnamese culture love watching your Channel
Un cafe serre is my go-to choice when I lived in Paris. I drink it everytime after lunch. :D Now I'm back home in Thaland, I order Nespresso Machine and capsules to have un cafe serre. Kindda addict to small and strong cafe like that. 13:38 In Thai we eat it with cháo gạo. Or take it as snack to eat with Thai milk tea in the morning. Just knew that VN eat it with Pho. Good choice (y) 14:00 ahhh escargot with butter is superbe. Thank you very much for food tour n Superb video. :)
Greeting from Singapore. Charming girl with a charming voice and a charming place. Amazing moment. thousand thanks for sharing. Going to Vietnam soon. LOL!
Oh your vlog is very useful for improving our English and it is also interesting.I Love Vietnam food so much , it is really more delicious any foreign food I have eaten .
nothing better than stayin in till late evening in saigon, having some good affrodable banh mi with iced black coffee on the street, rain won't stress us anyway. :)
I love Vietnamese food so delicious and satisfying with large generous portions.French food is good too but I never feel full since portions are small in French cuisines
I love your channel very much 😘 My English teacher told me that I should follow your channel to improve my English and I think it is really great😘 I am interested in your content. I also learn many thing, how to introduce our culture by English to everyone. Thanks ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video, thank you. Yes, ..snails in garlic/herb butter, baked in a oven with a piece of Baguette are great,... in France around 15 USD for a dozen. PS, Numerous videos advise snails are as a no go food because of health risk? Cheers
I’d like to make a correction: snails aren’t a French influence. Other southeast Asian cultures such as thai, Malay, Indonesian, and Filipino all have snails as part of their national cuisines despite no link to France and French colonization. The Vietnamese had been eating snails for a long time before French presence. It’s a coincidence, especially considering how different it is (as Will explained). The only similarity is the snail itself. It’s like saying gà hấp múi (Vietnamese boiled chicken) is an influence of coq au vin (French chicken strew) just because it’s the same meat. Cool vid though!
Flan is mainly from Spain. It originated in Ancient Rome and eventually became a Spanish dessert. It also spread to other countries in Europe, but definitely big in Spain and Latin American Countries.
It is another nice video, thank you. I hope to visit Vietnam some day and try these dishes. Now I am a Frenchman residing in Cambodia (Kampot), so not so far. I like to appreciate various 'cuisines'. One thing though, the 'locations' of the places seem to be missing in description ...
My mom cooks Beef stew Phở (Phở sốt vang) just perfectly and delicious, and she uses real red wine. Phở sốt vang really taste excellent when you manage to home cook it because high-quality ingredient lift it up :> I guess they don't use red wine for Phở Sốt Vang version on the street because it might be expensive. But the beef broth with five-spice n tomatoes already gives its signature flavor.
We can tell she's an authentic Hanoian, her creme brulee is from Sen Tay Ho lol. I still remember when I ate up a whole section of creme brulee in Sen, it was the best thing in Sen.
I just missed an opportunity to have snail soup here (Arlington, Texas) today at a local cafe. (BIG VN community here!) Another fun video, Van! Thanks!
Hi, Van Vu...; I really ( enjoyed ) this video with a French and Vietnamese twist on food... I learned a lot and ( love ) to learn new things, including Vietnamese food... I speak a little French, and I speak a little Vietnamese..., so this video was a little more ( fun ) for me... * All three languages were in this video (e.g., American English, French and Vietnamese.) The ( rainy season ) in Vietnam gave the video another taste of adventure to the video... I have Vietnamese and French ( cookbooks ), and I looked up each dish and learned a little more about French and Vietnamese food dishes... * Anthony Bourdain would be proud and proud of your video... Excellent video and very informative, and thank you for sharing the video... * I am always ( learning more ) on your RU-vid Channel and am very ( happy ) that I "Subscribed" to your Channel... * Once more..., you are bright, intelligent and attractive, and an ( excellent teacher ) of Vietnamese culture and customs... Mike in Montana :)
It looks like there's a lot of good meal choices in Viet Nam... healthy too. Not sure if you said(?), it seems like there would be good French food choices there too maybe(?). thanks for sharing, gracias
