Hi John, Fix title: "5% of a (x + 2) is 40, what is x =? Can You Build a PERCENT Equation?" The "a" seems to be a title typo. Have a great weekend and thanks for the videos!

Okay just off the top 5% of (whatever x+2 is) is (equals) 40. So 5% x (of) ( whatever x+2 might be) = 40 Okay sooo Now since 5% of 100 is a 1/20th of 100....that 40 is 1/20th of whatever that x+2 is. In other words x+2 is 20 times greater than 40 ! So ...40x20 =800 thus....x+2 is equal to 800. Rewrite it now as x+2=800 or x =800-2 thus x =798!

Nice graphics but at 5:39 you state 8% of 30 is 24 whilst the graphic shows clearly .08 x 30 as 2.4. You continue to state 8% of 30 is 24 and even write the number 24 in yellow at 5:45, thus demonstrating even the best get fixated on a wrong answer and continue without checking!

How about a simpler computation...simply divide both sides by .05 as step one, then subtract 2 from both sides. Done.

I solved this by using a percent proportion formula. p/w=%/100.

I got x = 798 within 3 seconds... ...but as we all know I also got asymmetrics with respect to the externals of my life I need desperately to get rid of so just leave me a hint if that ain't right and constitutes another slip of velocity since we all know I already have at least one... I would just do this .... If 5% is 40 that means that 50% is 400 and the number is 800 and as the equation said (x + 2) that means that x = 798

Why multiply out the brackets at 0.05(x+2) ? Multiplying out brackets is always prone to student making mistake with not multiplying the second term in the bracket? Why not just divide by 0.05, or even easier write 5% as 5/100 then multiply by 100 and divide by 5. I find US maths always tries to do things the hard way, always doing things in one way and being prescriptive, of course it might just be this maths teacher way of doing things?

Way too complicated method. 5% is 1/20. Multiply 40 x 20 = 800 = x +2 . x = 800 - 2 = 798

You shouldn't make these videos while drunk or sleep deprived. You should have been able to catch your own math error while hearing yourself say it. "8% of 30 is 24", indeed! And not only did you say it multiple times, you even wrote it down ABOVE THE RIGHT ANSWER. Sheesh. Also, you were more than commonly meandering and rambling before getting to the point. I suggest you redo this one
