I didn’t get into the industry until the early 90s, but my first truck was a ‘90 Freightliner flat top,and I also drove a ‘77 KW K-100 with air assist power steering, a V8 Cat, 13 speed, and stump puller gears. I think it revved out around 60 mph. I always liked the last generation International condos with the flat floor.

I've seen loads and still see loads of American cabover trucks not just at truck shows but also on the road here in the UK and when i went to New York. Most of those cabover trucks were heading out of NYC and going on the highway long distance. My love for old school trucks will never die and I can't wait to get my own Longhood and cabover truck in the USA.

My first over the road truck was a Freightliner Cabover with a 400 big cam Cummins, running steel balls from KC to Henderson Colorado. That was in 1988 and then in the early 90s hauling grain with a Mayflower Kenworth cabover with a kitty cat. It had air bags on the body, it was like sailing a ship. Then the last one I drove was putting gravel down with a belly dump with a International cabover with a Cummins in 2018. In the meantime, in between I had my own Pete 379. It was nostalgic driving the old International. Thanks for the memories.

Loud and hot with that 318 Detroit. My first mechanic job was at Cleveland Dodge truck. Dodge had their cabovers too. I liked them. You can R&R a clutch in under 2 hours.

I did love cabovers ! Drove many models on highway ! The freightliner cabover backed axle i was pulling super B-Trains rack & tarp flat-beds ! International flat top with a queen size bed ! soft on the front, nice ride ! The Kenworth with big sleeper was also great ride ya like the one photo you have there, the white one, mine was blue ! never tried the pete or the Mack ! just the conventional 350 econodyne R model 1985 the one on my logo here ! and the 500 mack superliner straight pipes now that was a powerful truck pulling 3 and 4 axle flat beds ! i had a great time driving that for 2 years ! Well all good memories for sure ! 🤠

I didn't drive too many cabovers during my career; at least the North American portion of it; drove plenty in Europe, but the ones I did drive on this side were memorable. Very first tractor I ever drove, on my very first day of training, was a '68 White Freightliner, 350 Cummins, 15 speed and NO power steering if you can believe that! Not bad when you're moving but holy sh*t, what a bear to maneuver into a tight dock. Roughest and worst riding truck I ever drove was also a cabover - A '73 Hayes. Drove a few of those IH Transtars which I did like and a couple of the Kenworths but only on short hops. In Europe, my personal favorites were the Swedes; the Scanias and the Volvos but I didn't get them too often. Mostly the Mercedes, MANs, IVECOs and the odd Renault.

Freightliners were by far the best looking of the cabovers. That first truck you showed is a gorgeous example. Pimped up and chromed out, they could be beautiful things. I still see a few of them working around here, usually hauling grain trailers or cattle liners.

For what it's worth, I have driven all of those trucks except the Kenworth. Here is my honest assessment. First is the Freightliner - or more aptly called the freightshaker. Noisy, rough riding, and in general the most uncomfortable truck I have ever driven. Yep, that one has a special place in my heart! I would quit a job before I would drive another one. Second is the International. Not too bad if you got the one with the set back steer axle. Bearable, but cramped. Third comes the Mack. At first, they are not too bad except for the basic fact that Mack cabs are really made for guys under 5' 8". After about the third day in a Mack MH cabover, you begin to get seasick. The cab rocks back and forth like a boat. After about a couple of weeks in one of those, you will be filling out applications for jobs that don't use Mack trucks. Lastly is the Peterbilt. That had to top the list as the most comfortable and easy driving cabovers I ever drove. If I ever had to drive another cabover, that is the one I would pick. I have a theory about Freightliner cabovers. I strongly suspect that the guy that designed them wasa guy whose wife ran off with a trucker, and he is still trying to get even,

I ran International Cab overs in the 70's. That's all the company had. No power steering, no air conditioning, no radio, no turbo. Just a 150 HP Cummins with a 9-speed. In the 80's the company started buying them with Power steering & A-C,..and am/fm radios!! Our company finally started buying Conventionals in the late 90's but still kept the Cab-overs until they reached their mile limit.

The worst "best looking" cab over has to The GMC Astro sleeper. Talk about getting a suntan while driving. Interesting that Freightliner installed flip out stairs for The Argosy: then took them off of the market. Forget the idea of a HAPPY go lucky career, crossing America: trucking used to be a killer occupation and, even though the trucks are more comfortable, it is still a profession that kills you physically and maritally. Not for the weak of heart!

GREAT TRUCKS, BUT THE DEMISE OF CABOVERS HAD OTHER CAUSES. The Cabovers have their advantages. Mainly better view of the road and vetter maneuverability. While the introduction of 53' trailers became one factor, there were other things that led to the end of cabovers . 1.) They are not as safe as long hood trucks. Even moderate collisions could send a driver through the windshield. 2.) The are cramped inside. Unlike regular trucks, cabovers have their engines under the driver compartment. This results in a huge 3+ foot wide and 2 foot tall obstruction in the middle of the cab. Drivers would have to climb over these to access the cramped sleeper. 3.) They are less fuel efficient. Their large flat front presses against the wind. The wind resistance is high which takes a huge toll on engine performance and fuel consumption.

I respect you lots Dave, but I know you're going to forget the "Great" built by Mitsubishi Fuso, now, unfortunately a subsidiary of Diamler Truck and Bus. Cabovers with set back axles are just better at being cabovers, because they offer better swing dip clearance for the same wheelbase, or a shorter wheelbase for the same overall length, good in the cities where cabovers belong. Point is, set back loads up the front springs better to make the ride a little less jarring, while letting you hang out over the curb when the going gets tight without damaging your steer tires.

Hated Pete COE. It was like sitting in a boxcar. Everything was far away. Kenworth was much better, but I've ever been in an Aerodyne. Freightliner was my favorite. Semicurved/angled dash had everything in easy reach without boxing you in. GMC Astro was the worst. Wraparound plastic dash was always loose and controls non-working. Wasn't built to industrial quality. Impossible to lay across the doghouse.
