Listen to this video while keeping in mind these are your opinions. It’s like listening to the fake news. I read the Spiderman-Kraven-Vermin story when it first came out and it was great. We know ALL these heroes will not die, but the stories are still good. You’re entitled to your opinion but that’s all it is.
I'm a huge Spidey and Silver Surfer fan (8 away from completing ASM and 1 missing Surfer), but I agree with you here. Surfer Black was disappointing, and KLH, while good, is not THE Spider-Man story. They basically did the Batman thing where they take a B villain and darken him/the story up, in order to try and elevate both. Works better for Batman than Spider-Man.
I don't approach comics as an adult though . I dumb myself down to kid level in order to read them . For me a lot of the modern stuff feels just pretentious and that is why I prefer vintage comics like silver age and bronze .I get a joy from the goofiness and nonsense . I can find fault with any story because it is just fiction , it is just a matter of immersing yourself in the fantasy .
I've got a question and an idea for a video. I have about 8,000 comic books. But I don't remember what's in those long boxes. Is there an app or an easy way to catalog/inventory them? Or do have to make an excel sheet and manually list everything? Could you recommend some apps and share with the community what you do with your stuff?
I disagree about spawn, its not perfect. But, spawn being demon in a sense, hes got tons of powers from hell. But, whats great is, you can use spawn in marvel dc. Hed fit perfectly with several marvel heroes. Just my opinion.
Storywise Spawn and Hush is terrible. Art wise it’s eye catching and you drool on the pages. Kraven’s Last Hunt, Blackest Night, The Silver Surfer and Fantastic Four was awesome.
As a new Spawn collector, I respect your opinions & have heard those sentiments from others. But I’ve really enjoyed the recent series & it’s been exactly what I’ve been looking for in modern comics; a lot of action, a decent story, all entertainment.
I just recently gave Hush a reread. It's probably Loeb's worst on Batman imo, but still not terrible. Hush himself feels lame and contrived, but the overall story is okay. Surprisingly, Jim Lee's layouts were my least favorite part. Alot of them just seem to be without rhyme or reason, and aren't conducive to narrative flow imo.
Señor goose, it sounds like you should really get into indie type books. That’s 99% of what I read. They are much more interesting that superhero books
Same! Like 90% of comics I read are indies now in recent years. They seem to be more creative imo. I also enjoy having a definitive beginning and ending. Start with issue-1 and read until it ends with that last issue. And that’s it. Anyways, love your channel goose! I look forward to your future videos!!

Every story hits different for different people. If you weren't around when FF Galactus came out, you don't know how much we didn't have back then. There's so much content out now, pick and choose your genre, artist, and writer for the stuff you like. There are a lot of great storylines out there, depending on your mood or your patience level, it might not be a good time to read it, until you're ready, even a 2nd read can change perspective.
I remember buying the kraven s saga when it came,e out. It was pretty freaky with the suicide amd all amd I've read better stories but I didn't mind it. I also agree with spawn. I never got into that character and like you I thought the art was too much. It looked wild but it was too wild to the point where you didn't know what the hell was going on.i brought the first issue when it came out but never got into that silly character. All style and no substance is the perfect description for that book. One story that I thought was great was tge batman death in the family saga. The joker brutally killing robin with a crow bar in front of his mom is something I never forgot. You gotta do a video on the the beat comic books. The fantastic 4 galactus saga I only read alast week and I did enjoy it as it introduced some pretty cool characters like the imhumans and Galactus.
Art styles do age. People rave about "film noir" movies - yet I find them difficult to watch because their style, pacing, etc is just so old. Comic styles are the same. Older books could use less words, but newer books - I'm not sure... it could just be I'm too old to really care, but they need something more - they just aren't as memorable.
All so true. Picked up the Epic Collection of Kraven’s Last Hunt and thought the whole time, “who is this giant rat man and why is he in this more than Kraven?”. Hush is like a bad early 2000’s super hero movie where the only draw is “LOOK AT ALL THE VILLAINS”. Dont get me started on the non-sensical Spawn material.
Kravens last hunt? Hated. Hated the ending. Hush? Meh. I liked Ling Halloween better. Galactus? I like that. Grew up on silver age so there you. Go. Spawn? No interest. Black Lanterns? Read it. Didn’t like it. So mostly I agree with you SG
Im a spawn fan, love the characters and the background, but i agree that the story lones drag on .. why tell the story arc in 10 issues if you can drag it out to 24, right? And yes, Silver age atuff hits different. If you think that F4 is cheesy, reqd the mid 60's Superman and Superboy stuff. Jimmy Olsen books are flat out ridiculous, but if im in the right mood they xan be super fun.
I was there when Spawn came out. I bought the first couple issues and dropped it. The character looks cool and that’s it. People that like Spawn fall for propaganda.
I've been trying to read the acclaimed stories as well. The Dark Knight Returns would be on my most overrated list. I respect your opinion on Green Lantern Blackest Night, but I wonder if you really realized what you were signing up for picking up a Green Lantern event... I agree with your take on Jack Kirby, I believe when he draws cosmic images it's mind blowing, but the way Kirby draws faces and body appendages is painful. I've never read the Galactus Trilogy though... Oh, you read the entire Spawn compendium 1! This one hurts, but I will say the first couple of arcs are very 90s but the middle and end of that compendium is very dark and intelligent writing I would say. I enjoyed all the pieces Todd moved around.
Yes, superhero comics are cheesy & formulaic and have been since their inception in the late 1930s. As a kid I enjoyed collecting & reading them but actually enjoyed reading my war and horror comics more as they had more stand alone stories and you didn't have to keep up with every issue. In my late teens when Secret Wars came out and I was pretty much done with superheroes after that, it just felt so gimmicky. I also didn't like New Mutants. Started reading and collecting mostly indie comics in the fantasy, sword & sorcery, horror and sci-fi genres which mirrored the fiction I was reading. Also collected classic head shop undergrounds & was big on Heavy Metal magazine & Warren and other black & white magazine sized non code stuff. I now collect all sorts of comics for the art (especially 90s Bad Girl stuff) If I want to read something I'll buy an anthology.
Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen ushered in the a new age of dark superheroes in the mid 80's I think Kraven's Last Hunt was made to make Spidey mature but it didn't last long and neither did Kraven's apparent suicide. Spider-Man is never meant to be dark he's the everyman that stands up to the challenges in a cheery happy go lucky attitude.
Kravens last hunt in the context of when it came out and reading the issues at the time was a great story. If you read it randomly it’s not going to have the same impact. It is a great story, maybe not the best but the ending makes it great because it was so unexpected.
I agree with some of this, but I actually prefer the single story concept of older silver age books instead of today’s jumping from this universe to that universe and I do hate crossover books. If I read Batman, that’s what I want to stick with. I don’t want gave to buy a Catwoman or Superman book just to complete a story. I also find a lot of common books still have those narratives that aren’t needed if you just look at the drawings. I don’t like those either.
Was the McFarlane Spawn run really HIGHLY regarded? The HBO show was great (I read that they are making a NEW one!), but I don’t think that the comics are highly regarded (I read the series as a kid .). At least the stories .
Are you new to comic books? Marvel couldn’t afford to kill Spider-man off for very long so of course 99% of the stories you know they aren’t going to die. Comics have to sell every month for them to make money.
I don't think that superheroes or supervillains are exciting or interesting unless they're believable. It doesn't mean that they have to be made realistic in a scientific sense, which isn't possible. It can only be achieved through the development of the character and personality beneath the costumed alter ego, that makes them appear palpable and realised. This was why "Spider-Man" was good, because of the Peter Parker character. I think from what you said about it though, that's it's probably not like that now. With the "Galactus Trilogy", Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were ushering in a more exciting approach to comics that was very different to anything done in the medium before. Obviously more has been achieved since it first appeared, but without it, they would have probably taken longer to develop. Jack Kirby didn't have a realistic style, which was probably why his characters looked the same, and it probably doesn't compare with what was done much later, but I can't imagine anybody else doing this at the time.
Your critique of Blackest Night makes like no sense. The reason you don’t seem to like it also is silly. Same with Hush. As far as if it’s the best Batman story? Can’t say. Have to review what my other favorites are to say. But the story has several moments that are just great moments in terms of being better than just a 1 time read. And I don’t get how you think Hush is targeting a younger audience and is juvenile. And as for the art, this is Jim Lee’s best work art-wise that he hasn’t been able to reach such a level since. I can’t speak to the other stories in this video as I haven’t read them yet. I’ve been enjoying your content as a new subscriber lately, but the takes on this video aren’t that strong. :/
Kraven disagree Blackest Night - agree. Love Geoff Johns Green Lantern run but wouldn't say Blackest Night was the best part at all. Fantastic Four Silver Surfer - agree, i find thay Stan Lee Silver Age stuff quite stiff and hokey (as someone who got into comics early 2000s.) to the point I don't even like it. Hush - yes the plot twist is so blatantly obvious it's not even a plot twist and the world's greatest detective should have known immediately. I love it anyway. Spawn - i dig spawn. But it has the most glacial plot progression ever, where issue 300 on are still hinting at some great mystery still to be revealed
I’m a spawn fan and own the compendium’s but I agree it’s a hard read. It’s not a breeze, lots of narrative, sometimes hard to see what’s going on. Hush I agree as well. It’s a one shot read. Others I think are over rated are- the infinity war, loved gauntlet was great but war was tough, new Xmen that was a hard slog as well
Never read KLH but I do tend to enjoy Spiderman as a light hearted comedy read more than the stuff that gets edgy so I'd probably end up agreeing. I enjoyed Blackest Night/Brightest Day a lot... in fact it was what got me more into DC than I've ever been before. Not everything has to feature Superman and Batman, they can rely on their friends too. Hush could not hold my interest... I don't think I ever even finished it but I do like the art. Galactus I haven't read, I do like older stories but totally get what you mean by hard to read. It doesn't even have to be SA, the massive dialogue and story blocks of text didn't actually stop till late 80s/early 90s. Totally disagree on Spawn though... I enjoyed it a lot in about every way. It is way easier to continue an established character's story (like the writers that took over) than to actually establish/develop that character and world. The first arc of Spawn drew me in better than most.
This might be the first channel I am a fan of where I like the content more than the creator. Haven’t made up my mind yet. My friend, granted I realize the subject of your video and that your opinion is of series you feel are overrated, but listening to your exact comments, and what you say in your other videos, i don’t get a feel of a love of the genre from you. Comics are supposed to be a positive thing and one never gets that impression from you in your videos. Comics and collecting seem a chore. In your video with your mom (she was very sweet and interesting, by the way) it was talked about how she encouraged you and helped foster this love of reading and the genre. But again, it doesn’t come across in your videos. Other comic RU-vidrs criticize the genre and yet their love of it is evident. Your topics definitely encourage discussion so in that regard keep up the good work, but I wish you’d have more fun along the way.
Spawn is something I never understood why people liked. The toys and designs are cool, but the comics are just bad. Like that’s not even an opinion, they’re just objectively not well written.
Wow, excellent points. I agree with everything that you say on this video I am in my mid-40s so the Spider-Man story was very popular when I was a kid and still is. I never understood why. The artwork is amazing for sure that’s about it. Spawn is unbelievably overrated. I think it’s because of the artwork and because the creator is so popular from his work in amazing Spider-Man, I would like to know which are your favorite comic book stories. Can you make a video about that?
Finally someone who see the exact same problems I see om Batman Hush, jeesh. I wanted to return the book after I read it, and I never do that, I always want to keep all my comics to re-read them someday, but not this one, ugh. Extremely overrated.
I disagree with you, on most of these stories. I agree with you about Spawn. You didn't connect with a lot of these stories because you didn't read them when they actually happened. I've been reading comics for over 45 years. I grew up with 70's 80's and 90's stories. Spawn has needed a really good writer for a long time. Todd MacFarlane is a great artist, but He's not close to a great writer.
I honestly thought that Kingdom Come wasn’t that great. Like it’s good but I didn’t really see the big deal. Also I don’t think that Alex Ross’s style fits interior pages at all and looked horrible.
