I just cleaned and pressed my first book using this tutorial, and it turned out SO GREAT. I did the whole thing with my 12yo, and it was a great father-son bonding experience. And, WOW, you were just spot on about all of this -- the results wildly exceeded my expectations. Thank you so much -- this has really helped me.

I don’t comment on videos much, but I actually have some advice that may be useful. I crack a ton of slabs, and the absolute easiest way is with a cheap bench vise from Harbor Freight. Just crack the plastic on 3 corners and out the book comes. No risk of bending and causing any extra damage. Super easy, and super safe.

I have done 'pressing' in a basic, low-tech way. I simply placed the issues with spine roll underneath some heavy books, making sure that the issue was properly 'aligned' as I placed it under the weight of the books. I just kept them there a few days, and that solved the problem of the spine roll.

The canned air will be chemically "dry", that's why its used on live electronics. Now an air compressor like you'd see in a garage or a very small one that draws on atmosphere will definatly condense moisture and spray droplets.
@samuelcatoe1927
@samuelcatoe1927 2 года назад
The canned air might be chemically dry, but if you get too close it causes a layer of frost to form on the surface which could cause moisture damage. I never tried it on paper, but I've seen canned air frost both Legos and resin statues.

@johnalessi1835
@johnalessi1835 2 года назад
Its a hell of a lot quicker and easier to use a small steamer to add humidity to the book. Also takes up less room. Just be sure to keep it six inches away and to let run a bit for before exposing it to the pages so it won't drip water. Use distilled water and put on each page until you see a slight curl of the pages.dont soak it . Plenty of videos on RU-vid showing that method. I'm no newbie. Been into comics since the 70s. Great video though and good tips. Side note: if using paper inside make sure it's inkjet paper NOT Laserjet paper Laserjet can pull color

Suggestion for you. Pick up a piece of 1/4" plexiglass the same size as your press. That way you can build your stack and then just pick up the piece of plexi and slide it in and clamp it down. You will obviously need to adjust your press for the extra 1/4", and possibly adjust your baking time a little. I use that trick with my seal 500 T and it has made things so much nicer. I have multiple sheets and can get my next set ready to go while the first set is baking/cooling.

@@BronzeAndModernGods got to go with the least quarter or half. I tried thinner and the heat would cause it to warp slightly which I'm assuming over long-term use could be detrimental. So far zero problems with quarter inch. Two sheets of half inch double was a very good cold press once you pull the book out if you want a slightly quicker turnaround time on getting your next one in

Early '70s I subscribed to 'The Amazing Spider-man' for a year. I was disappointed when each issue was mailed folded lengthwise and wrapped in brown paper so that it was the size of a business envelope. I hated that fold and didn't renew when the subscription lapsed, a few issues before The Green Goblin threw Gwen Stacy off the bridge. I don't think even pressing would have helped those poor issues at all, though.

EEK! , if your going to cut like that it would be best for the book (not to mention your fingers) to use a metal ruler. That's what they are for. It is TOO easy to let the blade wander to places you don't want it to. NEVER cut like that without a metal ruler, just saying.......

This kind of crap is one of the reasons I got out of collecting comics. What is the point of collecting a comic if you can never open it and read it. When I was younger I loved going back into my older collection, and opening up and reading older issues. This is impossible when you slab your books.

I collect comics. I have slabs..and board&bag...but this is a waste of time and money. If it's graded it its what it is. I am not spending all this time and effort to do all of this to boost the value up a few points. Let alone spend more money to send to CGC again to grade a comic they already graded.

I have a question for you: I purchased an Amazing Spider-Man #137 that should be a 9.8 - the corners are sharp has one small spine tic - less than 1/8 of an inch that does not break color - just beautiful. It came back an 8.0 from CGC, I believe because it has some dirt by the staples on the back cover and a small one inch dimple that could probably be pressed out. Since it could up the value of the book immensely to have it cleaned and pressed I would like to have it done, but I do not feel comfortable doing it myself? Any suggestions on who could do it professionally would be a help? Thank you.

Hello gods. I have a question for you and your audience. I've always liked CGC's custom labels and have them on many of my books. CGC is always retiring them and offering new ones. I prefer they add to them but keep them all. I feel it is a unique differentiator which sets them apart from among the grading companies. I have made the request through the CGC chat board. I'd like to see if the comic community could join me in requesting CGC bring back retired custom covers. I think they add that little extra something. Hopefully many will agree. Any thoughts? Best to all.
