This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "what are the 3 pedals on the piano for" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (search on google ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.

Wah OD EQ Mod Delay For the longest time I gigged with boss vintage Wah, Boss, CS-2, (OD-3, SD-1, or Ibanez TS-9), DS-1, CH-1, and DD-3. Covered pretty much everything and the Chorus could be quickly tweaked to get faux rotary/trem effect. But today in 2019 I'm using a Helix about 95% of the time and have my old HD500X as a back-up. Additionally I always have a Boss CS-3 comp and BD-2 bluesdriver in my backup bag just in case. I have the HD-500X setup in stompbox mode and can pop the BD-2 in front of it for "go-too" overdrive/boost that can get me what I need very quickly. The Boss bluesdriver can really cover a lot of ground from overdrive to distortion and just straight ahead clean boost even. Back to the Helix; it's got pretty much everything in terms of effects/amp modelling, IRs, In/outs, routing options. I didn't like the PODs, etc. for the longest time until I heard myself playing through one from a DVD video recording of a Christmas program I was playing at our Church using the X3-Live. Been a believer ever since. Since then, as I've moved to the HD-500X, and now Helix and always keep the older unit as a back-up as long as it's still in good working condition. I still have all my old amps and a couple book cases of effects pedals I acquired over my 50 years of playing guitar including some I've built myself.

I like having a Chorus/Flanger. Just awesome when having to single string your way thru a pre-chorus or interlude in a song. Next would be like an overdrive (Boss Blues Driver). Good for crunch from a clean channel, character and drive from an overdrive channel. Delay pedal is next. Great for a number of different things so I ain’t typing. Next would be a Wah. Awesome pedal if you’re gonna play "25 or 6 to 4" but equally cool 😎 as a wah-wah or exploring the different tones you’ll have access to. Last is an EQ pedal. Depending on what you want or need may determine the size. A 6 band isn’t going to do much but can come in handy if your amp doesn’t have a boost option. Set the tone flat but up your volume. Hit it when time for a solo. You don’t change anything in tone but you’ve upped your volume by 6-8 dB. Larger EQ's can do the same but if you invest the extra $$ in getting one I would think it would be used to help with a tone issue. Check with some of the lists to see what order the pedals should be placed in to maximize their abilities. Most are the same.

nice vid, I run Bias through my IPad and love the idea of having pretty much every amp/cab combo I can think of then add different delays, chorus and just found the synth pedal. Can't agree more to have different sounds that make you play different and try to expand your playing. I played metal for a good part of 20 years and have now just started to expand using Bias... and love it.

Killer video Rhett! I have not found my favorite fuzz pedal or tone yet. i LOVE hearing other player's fuzz tone but have never been happy with mine! That Tone Bender makes me want to pull my fuzz back out and see if I can make it sound like what's in my head.
@aylbdrmadison1051
@aylbdrmadison1051 4 года назад
Yea, I don't like fuzz (although I like it sometimes when others use it). But I don't even like distortion pedals (although I own one) and I grew up in and around the birth of thrash metal, and play a lot of different genres of music. I like distortion from amps best. As for essentials, well, amp distortion is the only "essential" I feel I must have. But I've always loved effects and if anything I over-used them in the past. But to choose 4 "must-haves": echo, modulator, reverb, and wah pedals. Still, a great guitar and amp is all I need to be happy.

1. Tube Screamer or BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver 2. Big Muff (I use the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker) 3. High gain distortion such as the BOSS MD-2 Mega Distortion (my current fave) 4. MXR Smart Gate for noise suppression 5. Something like a BOSS DD-3/DD-5 Digital Delay or an MXR Phase 90 That's my list for pedals every guitarist should have. Rock guitarists should have a wah like the Dunlop Crybaby. I suppose the high gain distortion might not be for every guitarist, so someone could instead substitute in a boost or preamp pedal or a chorus pedal. Examples are the Electro-Harmonix Linear Power Booster boost pedal and the BOSS CE-5 Chorus Ensemble pedal, or even Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Chorus. Guitarists that have more dynamic or soft playing styles should definitely have a compressor like the MXR Dyna Comp

Hey @RhettShull, would love some advice. I currently live in an urban flat and play through a 5 watt Lazy J (has reverb and built in attenuator). I have a small board (room for 3 pedals). Pedal #1 = the Lazy J dual-sided Cruiser (boost + drive). Pedal #2 = the Strymon Deco (love it!). What pedal would you buy/use in slot #3?? I feel like I need some modulation…even though the Deco gives a bit of wobble, slap, flange, chorus. Maybe the Meris Polymoon or Enzo? Or perhaps a delay/reverb combo pedal (like the Source Audio Collider)? Not sure what would pair well with the Deco. Thoughts appreciated!! Thanks for all you do.

I Headrush- but your advice on ‘character pedals’ is right-on... perfect for answering the question: “What should I put into my HR effects loops?” Good advice.

I can say for sure, I wasn't a fuzz guy until I made one myself. I can say for sure that it's the best fuzz I heard and I actually use it.

Great input. I may try the amp in a box. I do use delay on a few songs, primarily slap back. My character pedals are my RV5 set to modulation (my amps all have great reverb), my EH B-9, which I only use the B-3 effect on, and my POG which I strictly use for a 12-string emulator. Timmy for distortion, after a fat boost, wah and volume. I’ve cleared off 5 pedals recently, so I’m doing better!7

Tuner, EQ, looper then whatever two suit your tone/aim - drive and reverb probably for me but with a two channel amp chorus and reverb. Two channel amp with own reverb then chorus and delay. I currently have my favourite global stomps - drive, eq, chorus, verb, delay all going into a scene pedal (amp in a box, helix stomp) looper. Never been happier

My essential pedalboard rig: 1) Line 6 HX Stomp 2) Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb 3) Bogner Ecstasy Red 4) Keeley Compressor Plus 5) JHS Superbolt v.2 I think, that’s pretty enough to have the killer tones anywhere :) it doesn’t matter for me at all where should I play: even at home or at the rehearsal or on the gig, It sound AMAZING anywhere :)

I can’t find one RU-vid video that shows all of a persons pedals closeup, for a blues setup, with cool sounding settings, and a clear top-down view shot. I know the pedals are just a fraction of the conglomerate that forms your tone, but I just bought my first set and want to see if I can mimic other sounds. I need simple & direct details. This is not shade to Rhett I’m just hoping Maybe someone can’t point me to a video

My have to have pedals are my Xotic EP booster... it’s pretty much always on. My Xotic BBPlus is my go to drive. My Strymon El Capistan is my top delay. I love my old Fulltone Deja Vibe. My fuzz of choice is the V1 Walrus Jupiter. All these sound killer in any amp and work my Strats or my Les Paul. Great video Rhett.

I'm a bass player and I have a Comp, Reverb, Delay, Tuner, OD/DI with cab sim. The Reverb and delay are optional but the other three aren't.

1. Tuner 2. wah 2a. Phaser (gosh - how could I forget! And there is only one: MXR90 script handwired with no LED) 2b. Fuzz (I settled on a tone bender 3 clone that will also give me Muff tones. I run it VERY low gain) 3. boost (I use a TS with 0 gain) 4. chorus 5. tremolo 6. Delay 7. Leslie sim 8. looper (just for practicing) Sorry it is more than 5. And a decent amp. I just fell in love with a Traynor YCV50b.

I play through Fender HR Deluxe’s / Deville’s , most common back line amps. With that said I use CS-3, Vox wah, Voodoo Microvibe, Xotic AC+, M9. Other stuff too but I get a lot of good tones. The cab sim box sounds like a good idea! Thanx !!

Bare Essentials no preferential order: -Looper -Compressor -Overdrive (prefer an OCD type) -Modulation (I like a multi-effects pedal for this) -Delay -I use my amp’s tank reverb (controlled with a foot switch)

So do I. But if your amp is old I recomend that you swap your tank for a new one (they are not expensive). When I did that to my JCM 600 it make a big difference to the Clean channel (but not to the OD channel).

Even though I’m late to the party I do want to say that every guitar player should have an eq pedal and a compression pedal. You can really shape your tone with both of them, and can make a bad amp sound good.
