Cameroonian Beans
Ingredients
1 can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 small yellow onion, sliced
1 small tomato, roughly chopped
1 scotch bonnet pepper, stem removed
1 Tablespoon fresh ginger, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 Tablespoons palm oil
1 Maggi cube
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh basil
Directions
Combine tomato and pepper in a blender to pureé until smooth (add a little water to loosen if needed). Heat palm oil in a pan and add the onions. Sauteé until just softened, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and ginger and cook until fragrant, about a minute or two. Add tomato/pepper pureé, the maggi cube, and basil. Let maggi dissolve and bring to a simmer before adding beans. Simmer until liquid has reduced slightly and beans have become a stew, 15-20 minutes. Serve with pap and puff puff!
Birchermüesli
Ingredients
About 400g fruit yogurt or plain yogurt
2-3 Tablespoons of granola
2-3 Tablespoons of oats
2 Tablespoons of ground hazelnuts (or almonds)
A little bit of honey or sweetener of your liking
1 Banana
1 Apple
About 400g of berries or other seasonal fruit
Directions
1) Mix the yogurt, the granola and the oats in a bowl. Sweeten it to your own taste with honey.
2) Cut the banana in half lengthwise and then chop thin slices - mix in immediately to prevent the banana from getting brown.
3) Finely grate the apple - mix in immediately to prevent the apple from getting brown.
4) Mix in the berries or chop your seasonal fruit thinly and mix in.
It's best to prepare the Birchermüesli in the evening and eat it the morning after for all the flavors to really combine. Put some granola or chopped nuts on top of it right before you eat it for some extra crunch
You can use any kind of fruit just never ever use pineapple or kiwi because they make the Birchermüesli very bitter because they react with the yogurt.

I suffer from moderate food aversion, I don't really like eating different textures and flavors in one dish so I never finish my meal. I have tried various medicines to increase appetite and stuff but that only gave me ton of side-effects. I started watching your videos 2-3 months back while eating my food and somehow I am able to finish my meal whenever I watch these videos of yours appreciating new dishes and celebrating food in general. I have also gained 3 kgs in last 2 months. It has proven to be the best therapy for me. Thank you Beryl.

I will admit, I have kinda abandoned breakfast traditions almost entirely. In my head, any food can be eaten at any time, if you are willing to cook them. Porridge for dinner? Yep! Microwave lasagne in the morning? Easy meal! Also when one has a chaotic sleep pattern like I do, one breaks their fast at any time of day.

I like to have dishes seperated into different times of days, but what I eat has little to do with what would be traditional for my country. Soups, nargesi (eggs poched in greens with citrus juice), more traditional porridge or scramped eggs, cantonese ginger fried rice, milk rice, congee, green smoothies, rice with barberries. Millet barberry omelette, a not very sweet cake... From the outside there is literaly no isdication whatever I consider something a breakfast food or not 😅 And then there are chicken wings that are my no matter what time dish....

Growing up in the 1980’s and being left alone during the summer while my parents were at work, Frozen Chicken Patties, Frozen Hashbrown Patties, and bottled Sweet and Sour Sauce was my go to breakfast. 😂 As an adult, I’m terrible about eating breakfast, due to my crazy work schedule (fast breakfast options all seem to be overly sweet).

Everything I've cooked in this unit has come out great ru-vid.comUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB ! Everything tastes so good. Some of the recipes I've changed a little to improve the taste. For instance, for french fries which call for no oil, I spray them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. They come out great! It makes the best toast I have ever eaten. The recipe I use calls for lightly buttering both sides of the bread. It calls for cooking at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on one side and then 2 minutes on the other side. This time has a lot to do with the kind of bread you are using...so keep an eye on it. Also, the fans in this Ninja are a lot stronger than other air fryers. So lay a metal spoon or something on the bread to keep it from flying around. It's a little extra work to use your Ninja as a toaster but it is worth it!

It's not TMI, Beryl. A lot of people have really toxic relationships with food, thanks to media and social pressures. I think it's great to hear from people who have been in that negative place and got past it to something more positive. You're a great example, and your channel shows people the good things that food can do for us.

One of my favourite breakfasts I call a Hot Mess Skillet. Saute all the veggies you like that are often found in omelets and use some canned chickepeas as the protein (maybe 1/3 of a can). It's really delicious, cheap and keeps me full for hours. You can spice up the chickpeas to match the veggies you are using or just use salt & pepper and it's really good.

fyi the (indistinct) bit in the Boxty subtitles is "I hope you don't forget the (lashings) of butter, because it's so important", lashings here being informal slang for lots, so lots and lots of extra butter spread on top :) I normally make tattie scones but this video has inspired me to try making boxty too!

I never thought I liked Mexican food very much, until I decided to try making it at home. Turned out what I didn't like was cheap American chain restaurants - now chilaquiles are my go-to breakfast food when I have the time to cook. Homemade salsa, homemade tortilla chips. Super simple and absolutely delicious!
@AliceBunny05
@AliceBunny05 Год назад
I think a lot of people fall prey to this when they eat at restaurants that are serving foreign food in the US, unless you're well informed from friends who know what the food from a specific place is supposed to be like, 8/10 times you're probably not going to get something authentic.
@judithegli1345
@judithegli1345 Год назад
I have grown up as a Swiss/ Australian and my family has made Birchermusli my whole life. I have always thought (apart from oats and yogurt) it needs nuts, grated apple, lemon rind and beaten cream to be a real Birchermusli. As an adult I omit the cream, add fruit I have on hand and I also grate in a carrot. I know carrot sounds weird but it gives it another texture (and yes I'm mother that likes to hide veggies in food). My 3 year old can not yet say Bircher so it will now and for ever be called 'Busli musli' in our house.

@swisski
@swisski Год назад
The great thing with Birchermuesli is that you can make a bowl of it and it sits in the fridge waiting for you to be hungry; breakfast yes, snack why not? dinner, occasionally, after fitness refuel, definitely. It is seasonal, very healthy, economical and delicious. I love birchermuesli. The grated apples are a must have and if you’ve made it too thick you can add some more fruit, or yogurt or milk or even a splash of fruit juice to thin it out a little.

"Pap" in South Africa basically refers to porridge of some sort (usually maize meal based) and if I'm not mistaken, that's pretty much the case elsewhere on Africa too. The texture can vary a lot depending on your ratio of maize meal to water, and it's often eaten with some kind of cultured/fermented milk or buttermilk.

Yeay I was checking if someone is going to comment. Yes pap can be runny or stiff or crumbs, and its not using fermented flour, just plain maize meal, and you can eat it with tomato and onion relish (with your braai meat) or we as kids loved it with butter, sugar and milk…delicious!! So interesting how the dishes differ between countries! Again Beryl enables us to learn from each other ❤ Edit: oh my dad loves it with maas, the fermented milk almost like buttermilk.

Indeed, this particular pap, if we were to try to relate it to South African ingredients, almost sounds like a thick mageu (pretty much fermented mielie meal).

We also use a super similar word 'pappei' in my dialect of German as well for referring to a food of soft consistency, usually for small children. But honestly I have no clue how to prepare it.

It's the Dutch word for porridge. I'm quite amazed it's gotten so far around. South Africa used to be a Dutch colony before the English took it over and still has a large population decended from it. Other African countries and the Caribean must have gotten it because of the slave trade. Germany is a neighbouring country with a lot of similarities, especially along the border regions.

I really enjoy how versatille a breakfast can be! I just ate the most swedish breakfast: warm oatmeal-porridge with lingonberryjam and milk, or oatmilk since I'm vegan. My whole family loves your show Beryl! You're doing a great job!

Hi, Nigerian here. Wow, you nailed the puff puff. I have a hard time making them right. For the Pap, we usually have it with sugar, or milk and sugar to balance the sourness.
