I also have a two year old bell pepper plant. It didn’t do well the first couple I planted, but a guy I know told me to pull the early peppers and flowers off early in the season. After I did that the plant nearly doubled in size do to the concentration on root and plant growth. Have tons of peppers now. I just was letting it flower and bud too early. Thanks for your videos.
Bell peppers do not like big temperature swings. I grow mine in a hoop house and have had tremendously good success. I grow the plants from seeds in my greenhouse and transplant into raised beds inside my hoop house. The pepper plants get huge and need staking. The bell peppers, red yellow, orange and green were all huge fruit and very thick walled. Great stuffing peppers!
Thanks for the tips! Our summers get so hot I think that’s why we’ve had trouble, but that’s great that you’ve been able to grow them successfully😊 Hopefully for us eventually!
30 miles East of Houston new gardener. I am zone 9A on the coast. Just subscribed. Doing bananas, jalapenos, tomatoes, figs, and a rubber tree in a 30 gal pot outside. We are routinely hitting 99 each day with night temps 81-82. No rain in sight as of now 7-12-23
Hi Audrey! I have a bell pepper that has overwintered two winters in a row. The first year it produced almost nothing and I went to clean out my bed in the spring, I noticed for the first time that it was still green. You might try leaving one on purpose to see what happens. I live just outside Modesto, CA
Great video. I just discovered your channel. I cannot grow bell peppers either and am having better luck with shishitos. I planted two padrón peppers and they are doing okay. I couldn’t find anymore of padrón so I supplemented with the shishito. Next year I will follow your advice and pinch the early buds off. The plants are healthy but small ! Thanks!
I moved to Hawaii and I’ve been having trouble growing peppers and tomatoes for some reason. Back home in California they grew a bit better. Either potted or directly in the ground. Here I just do em potted, I moved em around because probably too much water(rain in Hawaii out of nowhere), but try not to keep ‘em around the sun. Ima do the pinch thing, with the chilies. I was kinda confused, why they aren’t giving fruits. 😅😅
Yes, getting too much water could be part of your problem. That’s nice you have them in a pot so you can move them around but they do need full sun, so try to keep that in mind wherever you move them to. Hopefully you have better luck soon!
You might try testing your soil. It might be overly nitrogen rich. I’m more of a brown thumb, but as an engineer I collect data. One thing I’ve heard is that N produces the green in plants, but PK produces fruit. Once the plant is established, try amending with a PK rich fertilizer.
While I appreciate “full sun” directions for plants, it seems to me far too general to apply across the variety of atmospheric conditions. “Full sun” in most of the USA probably includes some shade due to cloud cover, whereas in the Central Valley of CA clouds in the summer are only slightly more common than unicorns. I’m a brown thumb that’s still learning, but something that I heard from a neighbor with a very successful garden is that while peppers need “full sun”, they don’t need as much as we get. She provides a partial shade cover once her peppers are established and the days start getting toasty. I’m still trying to figure out the right amount of sun vs shade to keep ours from getting scorched in the triple digits.
Yes, I understand struggling with the intense heat! As long as you’re warm season vegetables get 6 to 8 hours of sunlight, they should thrive. In general protecting them from the afternoon sun is most important if possible.
How funny I live in 9A. I also live in the Central valley and I have problems with growing bell peppers too! Same problem you have can never get them to full maturity. 😢
I can grow the pepper plant, but I can't for the life of me, start the pepper seeds, or ANY seed. They may start to grow but then they just fizzle out. I buy all these seeds thinking this time I'll be successful, but I just can't do it.
So sorry to hear that! Have you tried planting seeds directly into the garden? You shouldn’t with peppers or tomatoes, but other veggies like squash, cucumbers, and okra usually grow really well directly planted out into the garden.
