✵5 Places The US Needs Interstates
✵In June 1956, the first portion of the interstate system was opened in Central Missouri. from there Interstates started to be built all around the country. from north to south, east to west, all across the united states. In 1974, Nebraska became the first state to complete all of its interstates, in 1979 I-5 was completed, In 1986, I-80 was completed, becoming the first coast-to-coast interstate in history. And in 1992 the final portion of the original plan was completed in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. And then it just kinda stopped. Every once in a while a new interstate spur route or other smaller ones would be finished, but overall that was the end for major interstate construction in the united states. But I feel like it was before the US was ready for the interstate system to stop building new roads. There were still a lot of routes that hadn't been built, that really needed to be built. So that's why I'm here today to give 5 Places I think there should really be new interstate highways built.

You don’t need a bridge over the Chesapeake Bay since there is one already: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. What is really needed as part of a plan like this is a bridge-tunnel at Cape May. You could then travel from NYC to North Carolina while bypassing all the craziness that is I-95 between NY and Richmond, VA.

The I-11 needs to extend south to the Phoenix area. Way to much traffic on the extremely dangerous US 93 to get from Phoenix to Vegas

That's the whole idea of this current first phase of I-11. It's a 2 digit number, it is not intended to be a local Las Vegas road.

Long-range plans are Phoenix to Reno. There's also a very-long-range plan to extend I-82 south to Bend and possibly beyond. I think the endgame would be making that a northern segment of I-11 and eventually connecting the two; I-82 is almost equally north-south anyway, so it could be renumbered without too much of a hassle, freeing up the number for the Northeast (not that that would stop them from doubling up). Then you'd have I-111 in the Tri-Cities, and if I-11 passed east of Bend, a spur could be built; ODOT could then get a corporate sponsorship to number it I-711.

I also think Phoenix, and by extension, Albuquerque, could use some bypass or beltway interstates. Strange how few auxiliary interstates there are in New Mexico and Arizona.
@mysteryman7877

@@TheRealNTM Phoenix will never get an auxiliary interstate. The state builds highways using public-private partnerships which work fine for it, but that model precludes an interstate designation. There needs to be an interstate that goes to Myrtle Beach, SC. It’s one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and the whole metro area has 450,000 people, with millions of people during the summer. Currently to get to the interstate, we have to travel two hours west to I-95 in Florence, two hours south to I-26 in Charleston, or two hours north to I-40 in Wilmington. If there’s a bad hurricane that comes in the summer, not everyone will be able to evacuate. I think just extending I-20 East to Myrtle Beach would be the best option.

Actually, most of the area served by Route 13 in Delaware is also served by Delaware Route 1, a limited access highway. Admittedly it stops being limited access north of the beaches, but given state parks in the area, further highway building will be difficult. Probably could use some increased capacity on Rte 13 down to get to Virginia Beach.

Agreed that the drive down route 13 or (as this map seems to more closely show) route 113 is pleasant... but oh my word does it get monotonous with the stop and start nature of not having any intersecting roads going under of above you. Having a raised I-101 means drive times from Wilmington, DE to Pocomoke City, MD or Chincoteague Island, VA would have 30 minutes shaved off them. And it would probably spur Level 3 EV charging stations above the Royal Farms ones (that top out at 50kW).

As a Kansan, the two highways through Kansas wouldn’t be highly utilized. I70 and the smaller highways between Wichita and Pueblo/Colorado Springs aren’t overcrowded or anything, and if anything adding some bypasses around the medium and large towns in the area would help with the speed and convenience issues

US-400 is the route from Wichita to Dodge City, US-50 runs down for Kansas City and meets US-400 at Dodge City and then both take the same path west to Pueblo. I agree no interstate is necessary as the traffic is light and in the several times I've been in this area it's rare to see more than 3 cars running together since it's so flat and easy to pass. It's all about money, the country and states have a hard enough time maintaining what's already built why add more to the mix.
@booboo8706
@booboo8706 2 года назад
I agree that the route doesn't need an interstate. Personally, I would rather see a north-south interstate parallel to US 83 in western Kansas. It would be part of a larger interstate built for the purpose of shipping from Mexico to Canada. It would be a mostly direct route from Laredo to the prairie provences without much extra local traffic. A few added benefits would result as well. One is connecting two of the country's largest oil fields (Baskan and Permian Basin). Another is connecting San Angelo to the intestate system. It's one of the largest cities (if not the largest) in the contiguous US not on the interstate system nor linked to it by a controlled access highway.

You seem to have confused suburbs and isolated towns. Suburbs are a type of urban development, we decide if we want a certain area around a big city to be composed of suburbs. Better connecting isolated towns to the rest of the country would not increase the size of suburbs. The existence of Interstate Highways in New York State connecting NYC to Albany and Buffalo didn’t drive the development of Westchester County.

I like the idea of an interstate farther east of 95. By the time 95 gets south to DC, it's leaving out all of the eastern shore, the largest city in Virginia (Virginia Beach), the Outer Banks, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston. I agree with the other commenter who said it would be nice to have the option to bypass several of the larger midatlantic cities by bridging across the Delaware Bay from Lewes to Cape May to alleviate traffic. But we must remember that the true solution to traffic is mass transit! High speed rail between several larger cities would do a lot of good! (I know about Acela, but it needs to be more affordable too).

I like the logic of the one up the great plains, but I'm not sure the native tribes would really be down what that. I live in Delaware, and I don't think we really need the interstate. DE-1 is limited access from Wilmington to Dover and they've done a good job of adding overpasses to eliminate lights all the way down to Milford. South of that, the roads are remote enough and the traffic light enough, there's never really an issue. You can drive pretty fast all the way to the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel. If you could do something about the speed traps in eastern shore, Virginia, though, that would be helpful.
@joyceneville9214
@joyceneville9214 2 года назад
I haven’t been through there in 20 years, but what I do know is that if DE-1 were to be turned into an interstate it would probably be a tributary route to I-95 with an odd numbered prefix, IE I-195 or I-395. I’m not sure what they would do about the bridge tunnel, and as you say, it’s been pretty well upgraded. Out west I would want to know about car counts and if there is a highway to meet the one going to the Canadian boarder. Canada does roads primarily on the provincial level, with roads designated as “trans Canada” getting some funding from Ottawa.

Northern and Southern Idaho probably should be separate states, and there have actually been proposals to create a new state from eastern Washington and northern Idaho. There's literally a single road linking northern Idaho to the rest of state (US-95) and the terrain is too mountainous to justify the expense of building a new interstate to connect mid-sized metro areas (if its even possible.) That said, the chances of creating a new state are slim and it would ruin Idaho's unique shape, but there's insurmountable reasons that northern Idaho is so different.

Completely agree on needing an interstate between Wichita and Pueblo. I'd argue it needs to extend from Pueblo to Paducah, KY, or at least to Springfield, MO. If you're trying to get from the Southeast to Colorado, you pretty much have to go up to I-70 and over through STL/KC or take I-40, which doesn't have a good connection from Amarillo to Colorado. There's a huge void in interstates in northern AR, southern MO, northern OK, and southern KS. That area is growing and really needs to have a good east/west interstate.

I travel the current route pretty frequently, and the only huge changes would be the speed limit would be 75 through New Mexico and you wouldn’t slow down for towns. It’s already 70, so I don’t think it’ll make that big of a difference. From Hartley to Dumas is going to be the biggest change because that’s a two lane road currently, the rest of it is already 4 lane, and the Texas portion is already 75 out of town anyways. It might cut down like 30 minutes between Colorado Springs and Amarillo. A direct route would be more beneficial, but also MUCH more expensive.

New Mexico State Route 225 is near Las Cruces, so they can’t use I-225, and it is a violation of AASHTO numbering system to duplicate the same numbers in the same state. 😢 It is better to have I-27 to cut through the Panhandle of Texas, the Panhandle of Oklahoma, and join at I-25 in Pueblo Colorado as of Amarillo-Pueblo Route.

As far as new designations completely out of left field go, I think a route (I-33?) from Dallas to Amarillo roughly along the US 287 corridor is relatively likely. Large portions are already rural 4-lane divided highways, and this would essentially complete a direct corridor from Houston to Dallas to Denver along with an I-27 extension from Amarillo to Raton (more likely than Colorado Springs because US-87 is already there).

I’m from Long Island. We have a state route called the 135. (Seaford- Oyster Bay Expressway. Expanding from the south shore to north shore.) Long Island is extremely populated and Connecticut is too. And to get from Long Island to Connecticut or New England, you need to go through the 8.5 million population city which takes forever. State Route 135 is the perfect route to bridge (or tunnel) on the Long Island sound to Connecticut. It would be very expensive, but New York has the money. I think the issue is the housing and stuff this would need to plow through and LI residents DO NOT want that happening. I hope they re-introduce this plan soon though, it would be a life saver for so many people from Long Island, including me as me and my family drive to New England often. And trust me, going through NYC is a NIGHTMARE. This could hypothetically become an interstate and I know it would be a very short extension but considering this would save all of Long Island and Connecticut residents, this is important.

The interstate going from Nebraska through Minot and Bismarck would make sense, if it were to be real. If I designed it, I would make it go along US 83 and US 52 from North of Bismarck to the Saskatchewan border. Right now, Saskatchewan feels disconnected from the states because there's no interstate system going there. It would help support Estevan, Weyburn, and Regina feel closer to the USA. And I 25 should maybe have an extension to the Canadian border too. It should go past Billings and connect to the Saskatchewan border. And Interstate 35 needs a slight extension to the south to connect to Mexico, and it also needs to be extended north to either Thunder Bay or Fort Frances Ontario.

I’m going to pitch for I-7 from Northern California through Central Oregon. The freeway would follow US 97 from Northern California and connect Klamath Falls, Bend, Redmound and Madras before cutting West along US 26 to Portland. This is a heavily congested corridor with sections of freeway already built through Klamath Falls and Sunriver, and a limited access expressway through Bend. And you could very easily modify us 13 in certain sections because it already is a divided highway in most places. I would also add a spur off of I101 that would cross the Delaware Bay and connect Lewes Delaware to the Garden State Parkway in Cape May, NJ. Currently the entire region is dependent on a Ferry to connect these two places and these two counties have a very large population to not have a bridge between. For example Sussex County Delaware has a (year round) population of just shy of 197,000 and Cape May County, NJ has a population of approx 95,000. Not to mention the massive tourist traffic from May to September in these two costal areas. (It’s estimated that Cape May County has a population near 600,000 in the Summer) The Garden state Parkway a completely interstate like highway just magically ends in Cape May on to surface streets. And a Delaware Bay Bridge would be significantly shorter than the current Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel. Just to say I have live in South Jersey my whole live so that May bias me. But growing up outside of Atlantic City (a metro area with over 250,000 people) I live about 60 miles from any interstate Highway. The only interstate like highways are state managed roads like the Garden State Parkway.

An i-87 extension though DelMarVa would most likely following the NJ Turnpike all the way to Delaware and then travel down existing DE-1 to US 113, then follow and upgraded 113 to US 13 just north of the MD/VA border. Then, follow existing US 13 though VA and over existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to Norfolk. It's extremely doubtful that DE will ever pay to build a bridge over to Delaware Bay. The idea has been discussed multiple times, but always shot down immediately. Most people in DE live in the northern part of the State and they don't want to pay for that. Plus, half the people in the southern part of the state fear the traffic it would create. So only a very small part of DE's population is in favor of such an expensive bridge. HOWEVER, the chances of i-87 being connected still isn't very good at this point because (as of 2006) Northampton County, VA (the country on the direct opposite side of the Chesapeake Bay from Norfolk objects to US 13 being upgraded. They don't want an interstate or freeway going through their county. Additionally, Maryland (while not opposed) isn't in a rush to perform any upgrades.

Better idea for I-87, haha....instead of ending before the Triboro Bridge, they continue it south to the Rockaways in Queens where it crosses to Sandy Hook NJ via the "Sandy Hook Bay Bridge-Tunnel". Then it parallels the Garden State Parkway continuing south to Cape May. There it crosses to Delaware via the Delaware Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Then it continues south to Virginia Beach where it the existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel will be more robust. Then eventually continuing to the the I-87 in North Carolina. So if you travel the whole I-87 you cross a series of bridge-tunnel combos...The Sandy Hook Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Delaware Bay Bridge-Tunnel, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

I've got one: Sandpoint ID to Boise ID. Not only is Hiway 95 (which currently connects these points) narrow, winding, and at places outright DANGEROUS (The hill down into Clarkston for example). It's also SO slow and circuitous that it's actually faster to leave Idaho ENTIRELY, drive into WA, head south on SR-395 until you hit I-82 in OR, junction into I-84 and follow THAT to Boise. If you want to go to Pocatello, it's easier to follow I-90 to Butte MT, and head on I-15 :-/. I believe that splitting Idaho into North and South Idaho would work a bit more realistically, given how the huge mountains that the aforementioned Highway 95 winds through are too narrow to build a proper Interstate. Of course, North Idaho wouldn't be very populated, but of course, combining it with Washington would make that a bit better. Have you ever heard of the proposals for the state of Lincoln in the Northwest? Oh, and Riggins is a sort of resort town that is along the Salmon River, in one of the few spots wide enough to realistically build an Interstate. Are you sure you want to bulldoze much of the city for an Interstate not many even want to use? I think that an Interstate going from Sandpoint down to Lewiston/Clarkston would be good enough, and you could maybe even route that west to the Tri-Cities if you want, with a long spur route going to Grangeville, but the idea of building an Interstate, however compact, through the Salmon River Mountains, would not be very feasible.

The part of the I-70 that goes through Glenwood Canyon cost about $900 million to construct, and it was the last part of the Interstate to be constructed. In 1992.

Not really. The areas BETWEEN the CBBT and Dover aren't really suitable for an interstate, they're too rural and there's too much residential and commercial development along US 13 and 113 that it would be too disruptive to locals. There would be significant pushback from residents on any interstate running through that area.

My oldest daughter was almost stationed at Dover AFB a couple years ago. Trying to figure out how to drive there from SW Ohio was a challenge. Use interstates and the PA turnpike or stick to US highway 50 as it followed the terrain of West Virginia. She ended up not extending her enlistment and now lives in Arizona. While it's a little easier to get there driving, it's a heck of a lot farther!

Yeah, the route 13 bridge (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel) is already built but definitely not up to interstate standards, but the coolest part of the bridge is that If you zoom in there are actually two tunnels that go under the water! There are also a few like this in the Hampton roads and Norfolk area and in other parts of the world. Definitely a cool design, and fun to drive through, but very difficult to upgrade to interstate standards
@boltstrike2787
@boltstrike2787 Год назад
There's plans to add additional tunnels to the CBBT so that the tunnels can accommodate 2 lanes in both directions, but I don't think it can expand any more than that. 2 lanes in either direction is as far as they go, if they need more than that they'd need a new bridge elsewhere.

East of the Mississippi is where it is getting dangerous and slow. St. Louis, Nashville, Atlanta, Chattanooga all need relief for through traffic. I 70 between Kansas City and St. Louis is a route I don’t even want to take. The same with I 40 between Memphis and Nashville. I wish there was a way to have parallel separate roads for trucks and cars and I wish we had a high speed rail system. For all the money we have spent on wars, we could have had all of that.

Even an upgrade to 6 lanes all the way across Missouri on I-70 would help -- it needs it DESPERATELY! Back when I lived in St. Louis, I played in a big band / dance band ensemble, I drove that road several times to go play gigs in Kansas City and also once as part of the route to Dodge City, KS. Speaking of I-40, I drove once for a gig in Asheville, NC. I-11 is already planned to be routed "in the vicinity" of Reno. I-11 will eventually be finished, but not in my lifetime. There will never be an interstate from Amarillo to Colorado Springs, nor one from KS to ND or Dodge City to Pueblo. None of the last two routes ("I-31" and "I-52") have cities big enough or have enough industry. Amarillo to Colorado Springs make sense in terms of size but the I-25 routing is close enough for government work. Now what else needs to be finished but will take years: I-44 from Wichita Falls, TX needs completed to Abilene, TX (there's a good 4-lane highway there now). I have my doubts about when that will ever happen. I-69 from Canada to Mexico is the most likely interstate to be finished in the years ahead.

The Upstate of New York and Northern New England States do desperate need of 2 of east west interstate highway that is north of Massachusetts. They are: I-92 and I-98 are two future interstates. This will save driving time of couple of 100 miles that are out of the way, save on gas (now the price of the gas is very high about $5 a gallon). I don’t want to see I-92 and I-98 to be cancelled. 😢 I-92 was supposed to connect from I-87 in Glens Falls New York to I-95 in Portsmouth New Hampshire, via US-4 through Vermont, I-89, and NH-101. I-98 was supposed to connect from I-81 in Watertown New York to Swanton Vermont, via US-11 and US-2. Why so much trouble going through Massachusetts by taking the Mass Pike (I-90) into Boston, so New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire do need one or two future interstates which should been done about 50 years ago. 😢.

The reason these haven't been built is that even the existing system is overbuilt compared to demand in many areas. Building these interstates, and then having to maintain them, is just not worth it. The Interstate system was never worth it in many areas. It was a pork-barrel cold war project intended to enable dual use of interstates as runways in the case of nuclear war, while encouraging urban sprawl that would make it harder for the Soviets to destroy all our cities by spreading them out. The cost of all this infrastructure is way more than we can afford.

As someone from the area I'm about to describe: there ought to be at least a freeway between Victorville and Palmdale/Lancaster in California. Both areas have over 1/3 million people and the current route between the two cities is unsafe. (Both areas, in my opinion, could generally use some road upgrades, especially on preexisting freeways.) Additionally, State Route 58 further north between Barstow and Bakersfield (and a bit further west to I-5) should be upgraded to interstate standards and is in the process of doing so. That would be a great candidate for a designation of an extended I-40 and has been supported for years.

There’s one spot where an interstate highway system should be at and that would be along what is currently US 82 where you can at least bypass DFW from the north along the Red River Valley connecting I-30 around Texarkana and connecting the I-22 route to the east somewhere around Tupelo, Mississippi. While the other part of the interstate west of Texarkana follows along US 82 across north Texas into Paris, Sherman, Wichita Falls, then all the way into Lubbock and further west into NM where it ends in around either Roswell or all the way to Las Cruces. The problem with that stretch is that there’s the mountains around Ruidoso so it’ll probably be like the stretch of I-70 between Grand Junction and Denver. A lot of US 93 through Arizona is already four lanes so moderate changes can be done to convert to interstate standards. In particular, US 93 has been widened between Wikieup and Wickenburg over the years to increase safety as it was a very dangerous 2 lane highway in the 80s and early 90s.
