If you have a question about a play, adding a timestamp (MM:SS format) makes a huge difference in our ability to respond. Here is our linktree for additional content and communication avenues: linktr.ee/betterofficials Buy us a coffee? abetterofficial.com/coffee

I referee intramural basketball at my college and these videos are so helpful for a new official! Even if it’s just intramurals, I want to be the best official that I can be. Keep up the great work!

I'm a 5th year official and that is the perfect place to start. You have very good competition and the games don't matter that much. It is very good on working on seeing the plays and working on your mechanics. My second year I officiated at Sam Houston State University for intramural and I felt like it was very good for my progress toward Varsity games (Which I started doing in year 3). Keep it up!

By watching Greg's videos, you get a glimpse of someone very passionate about basketball. Like myself, who is a basketball junkie of 40 years, these situations give you a good reality of the profession. I'm elated that such an option is available for any official at any level. Keep them coming. You have my attention, Greg. I think you are mastering the art of teaching basketball in a meaningful and insightful manner. I look forward to this season's 5 Play Friday editions. Good stuff to review as the 2023 season is moving along.

Play 4: defender doesn't put his arms up to play the ball; he instead puts his shoulder into the airborne player. I'd want to know the game situation, but I'm looking at a flagrant on this one! No doubt that I'd be coming in with an intentional immediately.

Play 1: Player control foul. Defender establishes legal guarding position. Defender is able to move backwards, laterally and obliquely. I think the ball handler doesn't beat her on the initial dribble, drive... therefore defender doesn't lose legal guarding position. Player control foul.

I wonder why the rule doesn't specifically say a player can move "backwards" on Rule 4-23-3c. It only says "laterally or obliquely" and also includes that the guard may not move toward the opponent. Why wouldn't they have included "backwards" in the verbiage? Rule 4-23_3c: "The guard may move laterally or obliquely to maintain position, provided it is not toward the opponent when contact occurs."

Play 1: Player remained in LGP in front of driving player and received contact. Play 2: Offensive player both charged / hooked the defensive player first (Lead or Center may need to officiate this as they may have an angle on the). Did not seem like the offensive player got her head in front of the defender anyways, so from this vantage point I’d the torso contact as a charge.

At 19:27 that ball is more than halfway through the ring. For me I would let it go because he didn't make the ring go down and/or snap back up. Didn't affect the ball at all. Very nit-picky to call basket interference there, especially in a 2 point game.

Play 4 = intentional but not flagrant IMO. I think the defender got airborne and then realized they were in trouble with their body control and getting dunked on, that is why no contest of the dunk. Its like they got scared in air and recoiled themselves which is why I think it looks so bad...wouldve been better at that point to just play the ball...even if late and no shot at a block.

Play 1 I got player control. I believe she established legal guarding position. I also believe the official was caught off guard and made a quick decision. This is my thoughts before I watch the end of the video!

Bonus: Is the ball considered "within" the basket after it has completely passed through the ring? I can't believe this is the intent of the rule (to wave off a basket because someone touched it AFTER a score. I'd interpret "within" as being partially in the ring.

#3 did not obtain a legal guarding position soon enough. Not enough extension of the arm to warrant a player control/charge.

You can remove some of these plays from your game if you call the obvious travels in plays 1 & 2. These are both left foot pivots, with the player driving to the right. That extra step creates these on ball "blarge" situations.
@MaydayAggro
@MaydayAggro 6 месяцев назад
Obvious travel in play 1? I saw dribbler lift her pivot as she released the ball to dribble.... I assume you are implying that she traveled when she caught the pass, but I cannot see that her right foot is definitely on the floor when she catches the pass because the center is in the way. And play 2 was an illegal dribble rather than a travel.
@schumey5media
@schumey5media 6 месяцев назад
@@MaydayAggro assuming the illegal dribble was allowed on play 2, its still a travel because the left foot comes up to step across. Same as play 1, when the left foot, as the pivot, is used to cross step, the travel is obvious. I agree that play 2 is an even worse travel, but both obviously travels.

6:50 Play 3. All the undershirts for the white team are illegal.

Play #3 IMO is a correct blocking foul called by the trail. 1. I don't see the defender gaining LGP by the time of contact. 2. The defense reached/came towards the offense and then bounced backwards to try to sell the charge. 3. There is no "To & Through" on this play. The offense is going towards the wing/corner and the defense is squared up to take a charge on someone that's going to the hoop. 4. The offensive player's arm had no influence on this play as the defender was falling backwards by the time the offensive player's arm extends. 5. At 4:36 in the 1st quarter we shouldn't care how many fouls either team has. This is not even remotely close to a game management situation. Call the fouls as they should be called because the away team simply might be bad at playing defense and that's not our fault.

Greg, and fellow officials, on play 3 11:48, let’s say you were officiating this play as the new Lead. How would you go about calling and officiating this? Would you signal a foul and then signal an intentional right away, or would you have the players go to their respective benches and then talk to your partners first (how long a time would be a effective/appropriate to come to the right call). Would you then go talk to the offending players coach? I understand the administration. I’m curious of your technique and rhythm in this as well as the why behind order of a hard foul progression.

Play 2 - You suggested that lead come out strong if they see the hook. In this specific example should lead have even been watching the play, aside for looking for the next defender?
@MaydayAggro

Play 2 is a block. Dribbler had her head and shoulders around the defender.
@kipfletcher5591

Play 2- The “hook” did not cause the defender to block the offensive player. I’m going with a block here.

play 2. Did the offensive player double dribble?

Play #1 = charge, Play #2 = charge, Play #3 = charge, Play #4= intentional and VERY close to flagrant (lowers his shoulder into vulnerable player)(can't judge intent), Play #5 = double foul, yes, but should've been called 2 or 3 seconds earlier than it was - clean it up. Bonus = no need for this call in a 2-point game, hot dog official, "Look at me, I've got a whistle". No effect on the shot, have some common sense, bruv.
