Two small corrections: 1. I said Hidden Power could any type but Fairy, when in reality it can't be Normal or Fairy. It's designated as a Normal type move but can never do Normal type damage. 2. This one isn't something wrong, it's just info I left out: Aegislash was also nerfed in the sense that King's Shield now only drops the attacker's Attack by one stage instead of two.
One more in relation to one particular Pokémon and it’s Z-move: Kommo-o. No more Clangorous Soulblaze. Thankfully they changed that to a omniboost move (Clangorous Soul) but it is now just a status move. Remains to be seen the combination of this and a good item makes it a bigger or lesser nerf than I would’ve thought
this may be an unpopular opinion but i like mawile way better than mega mawile, im still going to use it in competitive because i love mawile on its own why does no one care unless its a mega...well i care (sorry about the rant MandJTV i just wanted to express my opinion)
The term to nerf comes from the dart gun company. This is due to in FPS games when a gun would be made worse and people would say it's like using a nerf gun
Actually ferrothorn has it worse in concept, mystical fire is now a tm that almost every psychic and fairy type can get, before they needed hidden power for fire coverage now they have a stronger move

As someone weird enough to consider Unown one of my all time favorite Pokémon, this triggers me. GameFreak will rue the day when I make them bleed alphabet soup to offer as sacrifice unto the gods of spelling.

The point is that the mega evolution mechanic itself wasn’t OP. Certain mega pokemon were, yes. But that had an easy fix: we could just ban the mega form from competitive. But mostly all Mega did was make certain weak pokemon viable. And teams did not need a Mega pokemon to be viable, whereas with Dynamax you will almost certainly need to use it. Additionally even at its worst, Mega was never as OP as Dynamax. First of all Mega only affected certain pokemon, which made it easier to predict, and added a layer of strategy. Second, it required a held item, which meant pokemon who wanted to go Mega could not reap the benefits of other items, unlike with Dynamax. Third, Dynamax protects you from: - flinching - OHKO moves - moves affecting weight - being forced to switch out - certain moves and abilities all of which are incredibly OP when combined, and none of which applied to Mega. Z-moves were also never as OP as Dynamax. They generally only affected one turn of the battle. Additionally OP Z-moves could be banned individually from competitive, just like with OP Megas. And pokemon using a Z-moves didn’t gain the same advantages they got from using Dynamax. Additionally, Dynamax affects all pokemon - so while weak pokemon are stronger, so are strong pokemon. Additionally isolating it would be incredibly complicated, it’s not like they could go through almost 1000 pokemon individually and decide on which ones to ban from Dynamaxing. So it had to be banned from competition all together. Also you tell me whether or not an average, unDynamaxed pokemon can beat an average Dynamaxed one it’s not Super Effective against. Spoiler: it can’t
Welp pretty sure hidden power was the only move unknown could use. But that makes sense they were Arceus multiple arms that forged the universe and well sword and sheild are a region where god is dead. There is no meaning no hidden power just lies and half the pokemon.

I’m slightly salty over Return being removed. It was a favorite neutral coverage move of mine and is the best move to ever be used by a Normal type without running into recoil or other side effects.

Vespiquen lost all of her recovery moves, no more access to Roost nor Heal Order, so setting up or stalling is much harder. For a bug/flying pokemon with lots of weaknesses that was huge.
@@snausages43 my best guess is the fact that she's one of the few pokemon now that has access to Toxic, and she can also get Toxic Spikes and use Heavy Duty Boots. Still quite the stretch considering these things justify taking both Roost and Heal Order away.
Lucas Lima It means she has to rely on Rest and a Chesto Berry, which is very situational and can only be used once as the berry consumes when activated.
Yeah... Given how much I like the queen they really ruined her. She wasn't even busted with heal order or roost and them taking that away is just kinda confusing...
@@aurahero9842 Actually, Umbreon is still plenty usable, you just have to reconjigure its EV distribution. For instance: 128 HP/128 Def/ 128 SpDef = the same level of relative bulk to 252 Def/ 252 SpDef for Umbreon. This gives it 128 points to invest in say its Atk or Sp. Atk. Now Umbreon can run Crunch or Dark Pulse and achieve usable levels of damage. And a good replacement set for your Baton Passer: Mean Look, Charm, Snarl, Moonlight. The set allows it to come in on an opponent, trap it, butcher its offensive power, then get a relatively free switch-in for a setup sweeper.

I use to run Rocky Helmet Cradily with Barrier, Recover, Mirror Coat, and Bullet Seed. P.S. Meta teams are for chumps. Freebuild teams are better. I'd rather think in real team over more or less following a script.
@@aurahero9842 My main team in gen 6 was Cofagrigus, Cradily, Nidoqueen, Cobalion, Blaziken, and Regice. Gen 7 was Golisopod, Cradily, Nidoqueen, Cofagrigus, Cobalion, and Regice. Yeah, I didn't even use a Mega. Nowadays, I run multiple successful competitive teams, none of which are by any means Meta.
To be fair it's a minuscule nerf to a pokemon that stood atop the board like a king. A bit of balancing, even a little was in order. Now I'm not saying go make it useless, just not as unbeatable if done right.

The removal of moves period is a WTF thing to me (as a fakemon creator, I now have to completely revamp several movesets), but the loss of Hidden Power and Pursuit is particularly vexing.
I don't care too much for return but it seems that one of their reasons for removing pursuit was to give psychics and ghost types room to breathe since pursuit trapping T-tar was kinda cancer.

@@nechocat1234 I'm going to suppose that the removals aren't permanent b/c if unown ever makes it into a regional dex (or the national dex comes back :)), they'll have to put it back in. Really, they could have just changed the learn sets of pokemon that abused certain moves.
Ok, I can maybe tolerate the removal of Pursuit and Hidden Power, but come on! Why did they get rid of Return? That was the best Normal move ever! They basically screwed up the Normal types and those that ran Return like Klingklang and Slurpuff.

@@michaelkeha While I agree that they shouldn't have taken them away, to say it is because of them being Lazy is an oversimplification. Sword and Shield are only the second ones on the switch(Really the only one, not counting remakes and Legends) so there has to be give and take. Remember Ruby and Sapphire? 2 entire Generations of pokemon unable to be caught or seen.

Sonicrunn3r Dynamax would be fine if it was just a supercharged move like Z moves, BUT THEN they ALSO have stat buffs in every move, set up terrains, weathers, and other effects (all of which BOOST) the typings moves even more like using max mindstrike 2 times makes the 2nd terrain boosted damage, and the Pokémon itself gets stat buffs (about 1.5X every stat for those 3 turns). It also negates items like the “choices”, negates taunt and encore, can’t be hit by any move weight based because “that would balance or make dynamax worse” if moves that punish heavy mons worked, and turns battles into a situation of whittling enough to dynamax sweep, rather then sweepers needed to set up or have a choice item, they just dynamax late game and get major stat boosts

Mold breaker 4 life. Also I had a splended time walling/slaying most Mimikyus with lead Rock Blast, (red card) Sturdy Crustle. He was an excellent Disguise/sash killer. He will be missed.
@@slumbertrap6506 Gen 5 all the way. I had confused and surprised so many people with how surprisingly useful Crustle can be. Basically Red card lets me scout/draw out the Mimics waiting in the second slot. Usually to counter their anti-sweepers/Disguise set up. "Crustle uses Red Card." "Crustle draws in Mimikyu!" "Crustle uses Rock Blast!" Goodbye Disguise and Focus Sash. Also helped me KO many potential Mega-charizards, and Moltres. I do use him for stealth rock. Though something it's better to get a free surprise kill than a SR depending on the match. Usually singles 3 vs 3 pokemon.
@@NeoVault_ GEN 5 FOR THE WIN!! lol, in gen 7 i used volc and haxorus as my main sweepers due to there natural good damage output+ both have huge set up coverage. lumberry/dragonium z for haxorus and leftovers for volc(used mostly to set up on heatran and other "fire counters" while i held onto hp ground and gigadrain). honestly gen 8 haxorus kind of works the same only swap out earthquake with close combat in ou and swap cc with earthquake in Ubers. i would use volc cause this gen basically is perfect for her...but she got snapped for some psudo volc with less reliability :/. Im just happy haxorus is finally got CC, my boi really needed something to deal with ferrothorn.
@@slumbertrap6506 Both are very excellent choices. My only regret is not transferring/trading Gen 5 pokemon when I had the chance. 5 has a lot of decent mons. Most of my faves are from the 5th installment. Haxorus' stats remind me of absol... If absol completely lost his 💩, grew an axe instead of a sickle, grew plating, and turned into a dragon. I got really surprised during my B/W Battle trains. Almost got sweeped by a Volcarona first time around. Special stats are high AF.

For me, I'm most gutted about them nerfing Mawile. I wish they would have like given all those with Megas (aside from the ones with naturally insane base stats) a huge stat buff of like 50 or so to compensate for the lack of Mega Evolutions
Smeargle was the one that abusing Dark void back in the days of meta and that is why it got nerf. It's funny that Smeargle with the move sketch can learn every moves in the book.
6:03 Except that Dynamax is worse than Z-Moves and Megas COMBINED, since not only does it create almost unpassable walls, but it also creates overpowered weather-terrain-statboosting MONSTERS, with the Max Moves being comparable to Z-Moves. Also Megas and Z-Moves weren't banned in Gen 7, so they clearly weren't so "messy".
I like dyna's for a raid though. Sure, they are so fun to play with but the reasons you stat are that bad. Hell, I was playing support at first when I know I don't have an OP pokemon on my team. I literally had to use the witch of the forest (Hatterene) like some nurse.
Unpassable wall is a much overstatement, it's just that if you don't have the tools to deal with it they become very difficult to handle. Like a lot mechanics, but they are really strong

I haven't seen anybody mentioning Vespiquen. Not only did GF remove her ability to learn Roost, but they also removed her signature Heal Order... because apparently Vespiquen was too good already. :/
Literally have been saying it needed attack order to be like a bug time magma storm. 100 base power trapping move. Heal order need to heal like 75% and defense order could have brought 2 stages to both defenses. But naw instead it cant recover no more

@@ThePikminCaptain Yes, but that isn't the point. The point is that one of it's signature moves was outright removed, plus it's other good healing option became unable to be on it. Want to heal this already weak Pokemon? You have to use Rest. And put it to sleep. Where it's easily hit.
When they added mega evolutions, it was exciting to learn your favorite Pokémon was getting a new form and to see new stuff regarding the older Pokémon was really neat. The next gen they added Z-Moves... eh, not as cool but still fun to have around. But then, they got rid of all that and said “Hey guys, look! The model is BIG now. We put so much work into enlarging the model, we actually had to look up RU-vid tutorial! We also simplified the move set. And it only lasts three turns. And our other gimmicks are deleted.” No one cares about a big Pokémon, give us back Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves, they at least were interesting. This gen’s gimmick would be something interesting if Game Freak worked on improving things like they said they were doing instead of putting in all the past Pokémon that people loved.
Yea. I mean this is why listening to the community is a mixed bag. A lot of people wanted then to expand the Dex. But don't understand that Video Games are a Zero Sum product. Any time or space put into one thing, has to take away from another.

An abomination is dominating, Dynamax is busted and doesn't balance anything, Falinx gets a free Ancient Power boost, and don't even get me started on the cancer that is Corsola
Mega Evolution isn't overpowered, just some Mega Pokemon are. Same as all other Uber Pokemon that aren't legendaries(looking at you ultrabeasts). Yes they get higher stats, but thats literally just a kinda good set up move for the expense of not having an item, which is not always better. For example, alot of Megas weren't even used competitively bcs the higher stats didn't benefit the Pokemon, like Tyranitar, which is better off with an item due to the fact that it doesn't switch abilities upon Mega-Evolving. In the end, the change of ability really is the only thing that determines how broken a mega is. And hearing people say Mega Evolution was removed righteously from Sword and Shield just makes me sad bcs there are alot of cool and good megas, both Design and balance wise, that in my opinion heavily improve the Pokemon and Pokemon in general.
Side note on the Tyranitar. Dragon Dance on the Mega gave it more Speed and that was seen as good for making it a cleaner. It was now faster than a good few Pokemon and often scared off Pokemon letting it set up for free. So it was really more of a matter of do you want an item to maybe add more power or whatever or do you want a set that now has enough Speed to be really annoying as a Dragon Dance Pokemon. A lot of people favored it for that because it could really be a good mix up. A lot of sets never accounted for Dragon Dance so common Pokemon that beat it in Speed were now fearing it going faster. It beat a few Choice Scarf Pokemon after only 1 boost so it was a monster in it's own right.
@@cartergamegeek I used Mega-Tyranitar alot in Gen 7, bcs I felt the DD set was underappreciated, but in the end I always felt like the Megastone was a waste on Tyranitar, since there are better Mega-Pokemon to use, and it doesn't really need it anyways. Choice was better all around, especially with pursuit
@@Marth0032 It was still favored by a lot of people because it was 10 points faster than the base form making it faster than it would be with a Choice Scarf. It was good with items but if you look at Smogon gen 7 sets you see Mega sets so they are valued enough to not be taken off it's OU list of sets. I get why the other sets are used but people did value a few Mega sets for good reason. They held up in gen 7 OU so they were seen as good sets even if they were uncommon in being used in some cases.

I was enjoying the video until I got to that moment. If all they care for is competitive, why not use drawings and numbers instead of 3D models and characters with backstories? Dynamaxing is as lazy as using the trasnform tool on Photshop and putting a filter on, megas were better...
Easy fix a Pokemon is unable to Dynamax if it’s holding a mega stone or z crystal the two orbs for primal reversion or is rayquaza every other Pokémon can dynamax but they might not do it

I didn't mind megas and z-moves being both available in Generation 7. I def understand why they removed it but I can't say I like Dynamaxing as much as the other two gimmicks
@@MegaPokefan97 not really, charizard is famous for being weak, but now it has dynamax solar power and BOOTS, lucario is getting used in doubles thanks to dynamax justify, snorlax will get used once its gigantamax forn is allowed a lot of offensive eviolite pokemon can get more use with double the hp and 120 power moves

Aegislash had another nerf where King’s shield used to lower attack by 2, now it lowers it by 1 (Might’ve been introduced in gen 7, but i don’t remember)

My opinion: There's a lot of Megas that could be keep in Sw/Sh, one of them (If the Pokémon was in this game) would be Mega Beedrill. That thing is a freaking monster
You missed Aegislash’s signature move Kings Shield Was nerfed when you were taking about Aegislash. It used to drop attack to -2, but now only drops attack 1 stage.
Hardly. Megas last for the rest of the match once activated, Dynamax is only 3 turns, and the Pokemon can still be K.O.'ed. I never struggled with any Dyna Pokemon in Sword or Shield. Yea they get more HP, but not enough there or in other stats to be comparable. And Megas can let some pokemon change types or get new abilities, while Dynamaxing does not. Once again two very different mechanics.
The only thing i don’t like about how pokemon company is dealing with the games is that they are creating a lot of viable new pokemon with insane stats, abilities or moves, but they completely forget about previous pokemon. It wouldn’t be that hard to buff stats of old pokemon that are never used ,because they gave them horrible stats, or at least good abilities. For example, if you remove megas at least give the normal mawile the booster attack ability so it would be somehow viable
A good example is Delibird, before Gen 8 it only had Present as a starting move (without TMs, HMs, Egg moves or Move tutor), now in Gen 8 it has Drill Peck(a minor improvement) however, it still has terrible stats with Hustle as its only viable ability but the ability isn't good anyway as most players would rather not play luck with hitting their target. And for some reason Game freak thought that giving it two abilities (Vital Spirit and Insomnia) that work the exact same was a great idea. GameFreak wants to balance the Pokemon then start with the older Gen Pokemon because why bring back Pokemon like Mawile or Delibird just so they can get one shot by other Pokemon as their old stats can't handle the higher power stats.
Shame too. Almost all of the new Pokemon in SWSH are balanced quite well if they don't evolve. But there were so many old Pokemon that were designed underpowered and Megas gave them a chance. I think Aegislash is the first time Game Freak have ever changed the base stats of a Pokemon, but instead of cutting that down by 10 points, they should've buffed the Pokemon that needed the stats.
@@sonicrunn3r895 they have fiddled with the base stats of MANY pokemon every gen. if aegislash was the only one changed for this gen its a new record low. also.... old pokemon are not under powered..... there has been a nice mix of low stat and high stat every gen. i mean alakazam and electrode from gen 1 remain two of the fastest pokemon ever outside a couple legendaries. Tyranitar from gen 2 has been one of the strongest the whole time, and has better stats than most legendaries even. saying old pokemon have worse stats is HILARIOUSLY wrong. i recommend sitting down and heading to bulbapedia or something and just looking at each pokemon and comparing stats per generation. it also tells you under where it shows their stat block if their stats were changed in a particular gen. so just looking at the site should all of you peoples hilariously wrong thoughts.
@@luizbezerra4373 Calling it, gen 9 won't have any dynamax, and all those huge football fields that doubled for gym battles will be left just as abandoned as your average olympic stadium.
Dynamax effectively gives every Pokemon a "Mega"-type boost. And I doubt it will never be in another Pokemon game, but it was something that...the likes of Mega-Kangashan needed refinement. And if they were to go on with Dynamax such that there's an intrinsic ability to mega-evolve then keeping mega-evolutions as well would be absurd.
@@onijester56 I wouldn't have that much faith. I ain't no pokemon pro, but Imma give the best shot at my thought process here. There's already really op pokemon around, sans megas, dynamax, or whatever. Why not give the lesser used pokemon a mega, not only making them viable in competitive play, but also giving casuals something exciting for their in game battles. Granted, that's not what game freak did at all, but had the weaker been favoured over the stronger, then z moves and dynamax would never have been needed. It kinda seems like this "intrinsic" ability to dynamax every pokemon wouldn't really solve any viability problems at all. If everyone's super, no one is, and we're back at square one with certain pokemon just being more op than others. Not to mention, the megas had style. Dynamax is just a big boi version of your pokemon, and z moves are...kinda underwhelming. Maybe there's something I'm missing, I haven't played the new games due to just feeling weird about them all to begin with, but there was never a reason to remove megas to begin with. Fix, balance, sure. Remove? It just feels like we were left with something of less effort and fun, and given that, what's to say it doesn't happen again, and dynamax is left in the dust? What do you think?
@@jeugene807 megas were kinda less effort and fun tho mikey literally was talking about how mega kanga was everywhere in vgc 2014. also you gotta realize man they gotta make a big selling point or something unique to the region (while i personally like the idea i could understand how it may annoy some folks)
If Unown ever returns, they could make HP usable, like the moves that were formally unusable and now usable when the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra came out
Actually the Z-Crystals are still in the game, you just can't get them without hacking, and Mega Evolution Stones are apparently also still in the game...
Aegislash got a second nerf, being Kings Shield: Prior to gen 8 Kings Shield lowered the Attack stat by two stages, now it loweres the stat only by one stage

You forgot to mention that Aegislash’s King Shield move, which lowers the attackers attack by two stages when it’s hit with a physical move, was nerfed to only lower the attackers physical attack my one stage when hit.

It's more just 400 removed since there are 800+ and in the game there are 400 plus in the summer they are adding 200 and I'm guessing that doesn't include all the legends so I say now we are missing about 200 maybe less and people are still complaining

@@Shin_FTW But at least it doesn't over centralize a small group of Pokemon. With Dynamax, nearly everything in the game can be made competitively viable.
@@wilcoxway Not really. Just like Z crystals of old, a boost applied to everyone really only makes the rich get richer. Megas could've been good if they weren't given to Pokémon that were already really strong, but the application was the problem there, not the concept.
@@elijahpadilla5083 I disagree. With Z Crystals compared to Dynamax, a lot more Pokemon are capable on higher levels with the latter. For example, things like Absol, which was relegated exclusively to the role of revenge killer, can now threaten sweeping power through Dynamax and Bounce + Close Combat while gaining just enough bulk to grant it the ability to actually set up. Lantern of all things becomes an exceptionally good wallbreaker. Among other largely unused Pokemon.
Even though Aegislash got a stat nerf, it got move buffs. It learns Close Combat now instead of Sacred Sword, and Steel Beam instead of Flash Cannon, which jack up its power on 2 of its 3 usual attacking types to 11
I had no idea any of these nerfs were made. Also I have to say its very frustrating all that was cut from Sword and Shield. First the National Dex, and now several moves? It almost feels like the 3DS titles are more superior than the Switch games, even though the Switch games are supposed to be on more powerful hardware.
Don’t forget all the dark type Pokémon that lost knock off and pursuit, like weaving for example. Weavile was a really good Pokémon before, but I barely see him anymore.
You also forgot to mention Pokemon that relied on roost and toxic, which are no longer TMs and cannot be taught to a huge variety of Pokemon that used to get them. Pokemon like Umbreon and Togekiss were extremely effected by this, along with almost every non-poison type toxic staller.
I wish they had kept megas even if they banned it from competitive. I would have loved to see who was stronger, Zacian Crowned Sword, or Mega Rayquaza. But now I'll never know...
@@nechocat1234 it's pretty nuts even in doubles. It gives so many Pokemon extra utility that would cost move slots previously, such as setting rain + damage, increasing all allied stats or nerfing all opposing stats etc.
Losing Z-moves effects A TON of random pokes since there's A TON of Z-Celebrate, Z-Happy Hour, and other random sets with Z-moves to boost stats. Also even though it only does 1 turn, the effects are felt if you lose a poke or something else happens that causes problems
Which is also kind of a buff, since you're now more likely to roll a stat that gets readily used and won't have to worry about becoming dead in the water because Moody lowered your Accuracy 3+ times in a row.
