Sergei - I will write this in English. After years of learning languages - I thought I knew “all” of the theory for optimal learning. And while all that you say in this video IS material that I am familiar with - I have never heard it put as simply and effectively as you do it! This is an absolutely SUPERB video with your “Pearls of Wisdom” that provide amazing insight to anyone learning foreign languages. - Лублю смотреть и слушать ваш материал - :)

One way I study. Watch these videos with dual subtitles thanks to RU-vid Dual Subtitles. First time paying attention to translated subtitles. Second time focusing on Russian subtitles. Then I go through each slide of subtitles listening to Sergey and then repeating after with the dual subtitles in front of me. Then I watch the video again without subtitles and I get instant proof that I'm learning Russian.

I became interested in the Russian language because I stumbled across a young lady's travel vlogs exploring Russia. After binge watching for hours I realized I really wanted to know what people in her videos were saying (yes, she did have subtitles). Last week I didn't have time to study due to preoccupation with a project and I actually missed taking my lessons! I find learning Russian, though challenging, to be quite enjoyable. Thanks for this video.

The tip that really resonated with me was to read non-fiction books in my target language. You’re correct that it minimizes the “poetic” style of language that we don’t need for practical reasons as learners. I will try this. Спасибо!

Something that helped me when I was at sort of a high beginner level was watching Cheburashka and learning the words to the songs Krakodil Gena sings 😂❤ I would watch those shows over and over until I understood everything without subtitles. They're so cute and made studying fun 😊

Sergei, this was awesome! I can tell you personally that when I started learning Russian I did the "I will read Tolstoy, Pushkin, Dostoyevsky" not knowing that like any language, there are idioms I'd never get until I have at least nailed the BASICS. I've been studying on and off for 4 years and only now feel confident in being able to figure out a word's pronunciation from reading it AND being able to actually say it correctly with my mouth physically. :)

Starting out by reading non-fiction is really great advice for the reasons you've mentioned. I did this more or less with English. Having that said, I won't take Harry Potter off my Russian wishlist because there is also the aspect of a fun challenge involved.😂 Thank you for your work! Greetings from Germany.

Thank you for this video!! Two of my favorite videos of yours are Vasya 🐊 and his friend at the vegan restaurant and The 3 Bears 🐻 🐻 🐻. When I have time, I like to watch those videos. Then, I realized you had stories featured on LingQ and it was great to hear YOU reading the stoies as I followed long, understanding just a few words and phrases, but learning more and more. You are a GREAT TEACHER!!

Thank you for the slow Russian tips for learning. I find listening is the hardest but I can understand small phrases in things like news shows. Could you please make a slow Russian video about the history of the Russian language? It could be a simplified history, perhaps ftom a children's book...😊

Спасибо за совет про чтение! Он помогла мне понять, потому что я иногда понимаю подкаты или видео, которые для левел в2/с1 лучше чем контент для а2/б1. В этих, люди говорят о более комплексных вещах и, поэтому их говорение более понятно. Я всегда думаю что б1 может учиться на всегда и что б2 + только чуть чуть про язык, но … образование? Einen schönen Abend aus Österreich 😊

I love your content! Keep up the good work. The one big question I have is about the optimum percentage of known/unknown words. I don't know if there is any good experimental evidence determining what that number should be. For extensive reading, people now recommend 98-99%, and I personally prefer an even higher percent, but that's just what I enjoy the most and allows me to read the most. Which is better 100 words at 90% or 1000 at 99%? In the latter case you have a better chance of picking up words from context, and also just enjoying yourself I think. But I don't know. Maybe it's just preference. And unfortunately, I suspect there haven't been many good experiments in this area yet.
@InRussianFromAfar
@InRussianFromAfar 6 месяцев назад
I think it depends on what you read and what is your level, and also on the availability of the materials for your level. When you are just a beginner, it’s hard to find compelling materials with 98% understanding. So, in this case 50% is good enough. Because also the words and concepts in the beginner level are very often repeated in the text, so it’s easier to remember them. However, when you are already intermediate learner, then 80%-90% is better, because the words you don’t know are less popular and it’s hard to memorize them. That’s just form my personal experience. Hope that helps
@kipcarson3240
@kipcarson3240 6 месяцев назад
Thank you. Yeah, availability of the appropriate materials is a real problem. But that's part of why what you're doing for the world is so wonderful! It would be great if someone did experiments though too--split kids in a class into different groups and try out different levels of comprehensibility and see who learns the most. I don't know but I would be really curious to know that the optimal number here is. @@InRussianFromAfar

Do you still consider listening to be the most important part of learning if the student only understands maybe 20% of what is being said? I’m 6 weeks into my Russian journey and I do listen to a lot of Russian dialogue, but I only understand some words here and there. I can’t listen to a sentence full speed in Russian and understand what was said, even if I know all the words by themselves. Is listening still that important for someone like me?
