Today marks the beginning of my retirement journey, and I’m going to share the five reasons that enabled me to retire at the age of 58.
Over the past 42 years, I’ve worked in both the UK and the USA, making a mix of wise and not-so-wise financial decisions. In this vlog, I’ll delve into the five essential strategies that paved the way for our early retirement in Orlando, Florida.” 🌴🌟

Excellent tips!!!! Learned a lot! Just turned 50 and am now paying for a small build after flipping my third home. I have about 10 years to go but all of it will be going into retirement. Having a paid off home, being car debt free and credit card debt is the key!

Congrats on finishing Barry, you’re quite right in what you say. My plan was 58 but cancer came and got me at 50 so my world changed overnight. Plan for tomorrow but live it as soon as you can, you don’t know what’s round the corner.

Thanks for the great video, I'm in a similar situation to you. About the same age. On the west coast US rather than east. I still have a handful of UK private pensions I'm grappling with making the most of. Given the bad experiences with moving yours that you spoke about in the video, would you have any guidance on picking a financial planner? A company you have been happy with. Or one to avoid? If I leave my pensions where they are, they stop growing in three years which feels like a missed opportunity.

In that case even more impressive that you have been able to get to the stage you are at now at 58. I reckon your apprenticeship at RR would be a massive advantage over someone these days vs taking in 60k debt to do a degree. Congratulations! I'm 58, planned on retiring at 60 but the recent death of my mom led me to reconsider. I've moved my timeline up to possibly the end of this year. I don't mind work, per se, it's the waste of precious time that is leading me to this decision. Forty years of selling my time for dollars is enough!

Great listen! Congrats on your journey and success in meeting your goals. I’m 58 as well, 4 weeks from full retirement (following my wife who pulled the plug with her defined benefit pension in hand 6 months ago). We did many similar things in the last 3-5 years including selling our home, building a new smaller one with little maintenance for the next few years, and getting all financial affairs in good order. We could not agree with you folks more 👍. When we built the house we planned for it to be as operationally inexpensive to run as possible so we could enjoy our $ doing what we want to instead of paying big bills to keep it going. We installed a full solar array to drop our total annual heat/ac/light cost to less than $500/yr….and other things like that such as high efficiency water heater, high quality windows and insulation, etc. With all that in place, we are excited to both be in retirement in 4 weeks. No looking back now!

My thoughts on retirement have changed quite a bit. I don’t think a transition from full time work to full time retirement is the best for me. I would prefer to gradually go part time so I could still have the social connection with fellow workers and have some additional money coming from my job so I could have more discretionary spending money to take more extensive trips. Everyone has to make the right decision for themselves. Congratulations on your retirement!

Happy retirement Bazza! I spent half of my adult life in the States. We own 2 properties outright in Pennsylvania and Virginia. We have no debt. Unlike you, we drive relatively older, but very reliable cars that I maintain myself so saving thousands a year. We also live a relatively simple and frugal life. I found the biggest drag on finances throughout my life are children, but they are a blessing! My kids are now grown up and their own places, but they still ask for the odd handout😅. But life has gotten so expensive here. I'm now 56 and have a UK pension. Did consider transferring out, but too complicated and costly. Luckily my wife is a doctor and we have a great income. We also have full veteran medical cover from her military status (US army captain). I have never required financial advice, to me its common sense. Live within your means, save for a rainy day, and do not take unnecessary risks-if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! I have never suffered fools. My priority is, and always has been my health and my family.

Thanks for doing this video, really interesting! You have made me realise that we don’t have a plan! I’m 50, my husband has already retired from the police but is currently working full time in a new role. Our children are only just starting to become more independent, so it has only been the past year where we have started to think what we would like to do, where we want to live. It’s funny we were literally saying yesterday how this next stage of life has taken us by surprise. Thank goodness we do have good pensions plans, a home that’s paid for and no debt; we just haven’t figured out yet when we’d like to retire, what we’d like to do and whether we can fund the gap until other pensions kick in. It definitely involves theme parks, travel and camper vans! Enjoy the next stage of life, excited to follow your journey! 😊

Over the Span of 26yrs we have moved back and forth to Australia 3 times, third time lucky have now been here for 10yrs . Through circumstances we had to move back twice, each time losing money through buying and selling,and moving expenses. Just as we were a year into retirement and finally settling here, my husband had an accident and passed away. All our plans for retirement together never evolved, you can’t base your life on retirement to the extent you miss out on doing things when you are young and with your children. You have to live for today, retirement isn’t always possible or the plans you make whether through ill health or circumstances. It is good obviously to have money behind you but for some they base all their lives on retiring and miss out on the lives they are now living, I never thought for one minute I would be spending my retirement without my husband we planned so much it hurts. So yes be wise but not to the extent of missing out doing things together now and not waiting for the future, it isn’t always possible.

My net wealth is not really relevant. Everyone's case is different. You need to work out how much you need to live on once you retire, including medical, vacations , day to day living. We did this with our financial planner. Then, you look at your portfolio and see if your funds support that budget. People talk about $1MM+ savings per person needed. We are not in that area, but we have enough based on our modeling.

Also youtube and the way it supports your retirement in terms of finance will be added motivation. Surely being on utube help with income too as what you earn on utube must give you a income with all the followers you have, & do you have to do your own taxes with the incime from utube, instrgram, pateron income etc , as i wanted to do vlogs but that want puts me off having to sort out taxes from payment, i havent gotba clue, how to vlog on utube, but would love to earn extra cash, to also just sort out buying my home, how does that work taxes & utube 🤔🤔🤔
@ThemeParkBazza
@ThemeParkBazza 2 месяца назад
For RU-vid you are treated a self employed, so you have to pay taxes at the end of the year on any money you make as part of it . Also you can write off taxes on things you spend money on that are to help make the vlogs. My advice is get a good tax person to help who u destined all the rules, that’s what I do.

For me the biggest thing is start paying into a pension as soon as you start work. Martin Lewis always says you should pay in half you age in percentage terms when you first start working. So if starting at 20 you should pay in 10% for the remainder of your working life. Of course this is just a very rough guide. Indeed with lower interest rates in modern times this could prove to be on low side but better this than do nothing. To put into context putting off starting follow his rationale and start at 30 and you’d need 15% for rest of working life. Enjoy your retirement.

@BaileyMxX
@BaileyMxX 3 месяца назад
Meant in the nicest way but what impact does lower interest rates have on a pension pot? Most pensions (especially growth stage) aren't invested in cash e.g. your bank interest rates Equities (company shares) which the majority of your pension fund will be in generally give much higher returns in low interest rates market as cash is cheaper for businesses to grow, the stock market generally outperforms during low interest rates cycles. The main impact would be on bonds/treasuries/gilts/fixed income which indeed would be impacted by rates but as you've stated getting started and with a longer outlook that you have a longer time runway then you want a bigger focus on equities. So in essence for most growth funds a low interest rate environment is actually very very beneficial, even more so in real terms if inflation is also low, so basically the past decade prior to COVID was the Goldilocks zone

@@BaileyMxX do you realize that from March 2020 until now, if you had money invested in an S&P 500 fund would have made a pretty nice gain. Same in the CDs and in bonds. The 80's and 90's did very well too. And if you timed it right between 2000 and 2008, same results. The media may paint too much doom and gloom about the market and the economy but in the real world, it has been very good for many years in the market.

We looked at it but electricity is so cheap it would be a 10+ year payback as Florida revoked most of the money it used to pay for surplus feed back to the grid. Also as you now have to have a whole new roof every 15 years for insurance purposes that is going to be about the lifetime of the panels.

Oh I should add we have Natural gas for our water heater and oven so electricity is for Lights and AC

Anyone who does not have a pension should never be taxed to provide someone else's lavish, starts at an early age, pension. BTW in my 401k. I've had 27 years of negative returns followed by large loss in 2022 in bond fund. After studying the dynamics of bond funds, they should be illegal. The bond funds divorce the benefits of bonds from those that have $ in the funds in order to enrich those arranging the scheme.

Well done. One thing I will say, and I mean no disrespect, but it's a lot easier if you're a couple or married. There are two of you, two wages, two motivators, two people on the same page. Single people in their 40s who've naver been married like myself have it a LOT harder. So this dream (which i'd love too) isn't most likely going to happen for me unfortunately.
@ThemeParkBazza
@ThemeParkBazza 2 месяца назад
I completely understand, our son is 32 and single in the UK as we are going through the challenge of just even getting an house. In the early days two wages made a big difference, the past 20 years we have been just on my wage but the bigger salaries in the USA helped that. The deciding factor on when you can retire is how much money do you need to live. Not today but where you choose to retire, will it be the UK or being single another country with a cheaper cost of living ? If you know roughly what you will need to live ( rent , food, tax , etc) then you can calculate if it’s possible. So don’t give up on the dream, see if you can change the playing field to your advantage.

I would like to add very few American companies offer traditional pensions anymore. The 401k is the modern equivalent of a pension. It appears Brits use the word “pension” interchangeably with a 401k or IRA.

LOL😂, #1 Pensions. Must be nice. I am a Nurse and my employer doesnt offer a 401k, nothing at all. Companies like the one I work for treat employees like contract not direct employees. We get virtually 0 benefits , accumulated vacation time and the ability to purchase crappy health insurance. No sick days, no free anything.
