5 Reasons Super Dwarf Retics are the BEST PET SNAKE

Super Dwarf Retics are the best pet snake regardless if Clint's Reptiles gave it a 3.6... ;)
Not only are they just cool snakes with amazing patterns and morphs, they are a key part in moving the industry away from irresponsible keeping of the largest snakes in the world, Mainland Reticulated Pythons.

To be fair, they lost out mostly on availability and cost, two things that don’t effect the joy you get out of the snake once you get it. Clint did say how much he loved his snake.

@@ReachOutReptiles i personally like that a really great reptile that is almost impossible to get and/or really expensive is likely to be lower rated because what’s the point of knowing the best pet reptile if you can’t ever get it? But I get why as a dwarf retic breeder you guys wouldn’t be thrilled. Anything over 3 is great on Clint’s system and few have gotten 4 and above. Another example is the Peters Banded skink which he also loved but rated lower because it’s not consistently captive bred

I agree. They’re an excellent family snake. TC is the first snake that I would let a new person interact with before any of our others for sure. For a family that wants a snake they can see most of the time and that doesn’t mind interacting and handling, get a super dwarf!

They really are the best pet snake(at least for what I generally look for in a snake.) Not only do reticulated pythons have some of the best morphs, but small/baby snakes always look better than their larger/adult counterparparts, even just due to it having them having smaller scales that make the pattern look smoother, and make the pattern not break up as much, especially where one scale is say, all black and one next to it is yellow or white. As much it would be cool to have an adult mainland retic(actually, I take that back, it would suck. Unless someone else did all the cage building, cleaning, etc.), I want a snake I can handle without it being potentially dangerous, and needing to take a break to catch my breath after 2 minutes(and that won't knock over everything in my house in the process.) I would also feel bad keeping such a giant snake, especially a relatively active one, that also likes to climb, in even the biggest of cages people tend to keep adult retics in. I want to be able chill on my computer or on the couch with my girlfriend watching a moving while holding my snake(sigh...you know what I mean, geez.) I've also always always though baby reticle are among the curest of snakes, particularly their heads, and having a super dwarf is almost like having a baby retic forever. I genuinely cannot wait to see some of the morphs that get brought over into super dwarves. In particular, those super orange snakes, some even solid orange(I've always loved patternless snakes) ones that Jay at prehistoric pets hatches sometimes. Would that bright orange last into adulthood?

Thank you, Garrett. I have been dreaming of these for so long, thinking they would always be above my pay grade. Back in the 90s, I got to work with the vet for the reptiles at Zoo Boise as a mentor through scouts. (I'm dating myself, here... ) She had a small animal clinic as well, so the first snake I ever held was a white lipped python.

I've wanted a retic forever but like you said, they're way too big. So I think my next snake will be a dwarf retic. Would mind something the size of a Boa Constrictor. 7-10 ft would be manageable for me alone and still an impressive size. But it'll likely be a couple years before my next snake.

Yeah, I've always said that's the biggest problem with Clint's system. Not only are there other things to consider besides the 5 criteria he uses, but they're also not weighted. So something like a cobra or rattlesnake or gabboon viper or hell, a coral snake may get high scores in 4 categories, but only 1 low score(i.e.handleability), and it could potentially get a better score than a very good, reasonable pet. Granted, I get that's it's mostly for fun, and that he points this out when it occurs, and discusses the pros of cons of that particular animal, he doesn't just give you a number. I do really love that he's been branching off from his "best pet reptile" series, and has been making videos on more specific topics having to do with biology, evolution, taxonomy/phylogeny, etc., particularly on his second channel.

You are doing a great job at educating keepers on the realities of keeping Mainland Retics that according to USARK, only some keepers have the skills, experience, space and budget to be able to properly care for. Super Dwarf Retics on the other hand are far more manageable by many more keepers and can easily be kept and housed in a commercially available enclosure (there are no suitable enclosures made for mainland retics anywhere). We need more breeders and educators like you if we are to continue on our path towards becoming a responsible, credible part of the pet industry.

Fyi 3.6 is a really high rating. I don't remember the specifics on his SD video but something that drags down the score is reletive to beginner snakes. They are bigger than ball pythons, they have a higher cost initially, and there is a risk of getting a much larger snake than what you actually were expecting. He has a few SD and speaks highly of them.

You can approach the authorities in your state regarding adding a certain reptile to their allowed list. You will need to provide them with information about why they should make an exception for that particular animal. It won't work in a state like Florida where everything that gets loose becomes invasive but other states might consider it.

Reach out Reptiles, Clint Laidlaw said that the supper dwarf retic is a great beginner snake. Do you think a supper dwarf could be a good first pet reptile? Asking for my future-self. So far I have plants and fish but 0 reptiles. P.S. My husband and I both love holding Athena at Clint's Reptile Room, thank you for sending her to Clint and giving us the opportunity to hold such a beautiful animal!
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 2 года назад
Athena is great! I think if you got the right bloodline, did you research, and basically went overboard on care and set up you would be OK. However, I would always recommend getting some thing more native to your region as a very first reptile pet, they seem to be much more forgiving of husbandry errors. King snakes, Ratsnakes, gopher snakes, etc. tropical reptiles require a bit of skill in controlling environmental parameters.

A $2000 snake just has a different clientele (mostly breeders). These start at $400, but if that’s too much for a pet in your mind- you can start with local species and have just as much fun- or try rescuing.
