Which smart home hub is best? Which smart home system should you buy? Probably none of them! Whether you own Samsung Smartthings or Philips Hue or Hive this is the end of your Smart Home hub! Since the latest Amazon Echo now has a built in Zigbee hub Amazon have crushed the smart home market. Amazon's Alexa routines are now so powerful that smart home devices such as Wifi motion sensors and Zigbee door sensors will both work directly with Alexa without the need of a Smart Home hub such as Philips Hue or Samsung Smartthings.
Philips Hue and Samsung Smartthings will soon be a thing of the past as Amazon release new Echo products and include built in Zigbee functionality into every device. The Google Nest hub isn't a hub at all, and Google Zigbee hubs simply don't exist. This was a mistake and Google have lost the Smart home race.
Connected Home Over IP is on the horizon, and is further evidence that the industry is moving back to a hubless Wifi Smart Home. Philips Hue and Samsung will almost certainly begin to manufacturer Smart home devices to work with the Amazon Echo directly and will abandon the smart home hub altogether and it's going to happen sooner than you think.

Amazon's Alexa routines are now so powerful that smart home devices such as Wifi motion sensors and Zigbee door sensors will both work directly with Alexa without the need of a Smart Home hub such as Philips Hue or Samsung Smartthings. Choip needs to exist because there needs to be a language for how hubs will talk to devices. Right now there are HomeKit supporting devices, and Alexa, and google home, and iftttt, etc. Those are all different languages that describe how a hub/service will talk to a device. As a bulb maker, you need to program your bulb to individually understand all those language (or at least all the ones you want to support). With CHOIP, there will be a defined language. So as a bulb maker, it will be a lot easier to create a bulb that just works with everything.

I watched you, Brian, Craig and Reed last year to choose which way I was going to begin my smart home journey. And continue to watch all of you to keep up to date. Ended up going with Alexa all the way. Yup, all my eggs in one basket! Must admit I questioned why I needed a hub when I looked at gadgets. There are now soooooo many products that work with Alexa it was easy. We have over 50 devices running now and honestly have had very few issues. Routines have worked wonderfully. Latest purchases are the Taotronics routers to handle everything, everywhere (great range with two of them.....right out to my husbands woodworking shop). And the Eufy battery operated security cameras. No hub! Not needed! Thank you for all the work you have done to make my smart life easier!

RU-vid suggested this channel, not sure why, but I do find the silly skits funny and Paul's high pitched voices have caught the attention of the family. I have been using nothing but WIFI plugs but did purchase some zigbee ones on sale. I handed one to my 9 year old for his lamp and when he asked how to pair it I simply said no need the smartthings hub will automatically add it. He asked how and I was like that's how zigbee works. He then proceeded to do some air humping while yelling oooooohhhhh the zigbee. I found it amusing while the Mrs. Just rolled her eyes

I don't think ZigBee or Z-Wave will die. There is so much development still in ZigBee, especially on the cheap chinese device market. Aeotec, who now took over all the SmartThings hardware, have always been very heavily into Z-Wave, and so is Fibaro, Home-Seer and a few other hubs. I can't see them going away for several years yet. My advice is get what does the job for you now. If you have a z-wave hub, the Z-wave part is local. It will keep working until the electronics actually fail. Even the first gen Philips hue hub still works and can pair the latest bulbs, it is just local only. Connect it to a hub like Home Assistant, and you get all your voice assistant stuff back. Buy what works for you now. Don't worry about 10 years time

Great video, as ever Paul. Just one thing regarding your theory that Z-Wave is dead, the Ring alarm system (Ring is owned by Amazon) uses Z-Wave to communicate with the contact and motion sensors. Amazon hubs would need to avoid killing off their own Ring alarm system's functionality. Just a thought.

My programmable heater died and I needed a way to add trimmers to its replacement. Here's the thing a hub gives me?Platform agnostic support between Google Home, Alexa and Homekit at the exact same time. And Philips can't just get rid of a Hub and depend entirely on Alexa if they still wanna support Homekit for Apple iOS users. So that's not plausible and they aren't going to give up Homekit and Siri support.
@martinborgenby4047
@martinborgenby4047 3 года назад
I agree on mostly everything in this Video. Personally I’ve been trying to stay away from Z-wave for some time now and instead buying zigbee stuff where it’s possible. I think that hubs might be not all dead in the future but be limited to a small group of powerusers only that wants to do more stuff than you can do with your Amazon Echo or who want’s to do stuff in their own way. But these hubs will probably be comunitybased stuff like Hubitat or the Home Assistant Blue and may also be subscription-based in some way or another. I think the big battle will be between Amazon and Apple Homekit who both target the same type of customers for their smart home solutions; The big masses who wants a easy solution that does not demand that you are some kind of nerd to make it work.

Exactly this I was thinking when I saw what can I integrate outside the hubs and dongles and their protocols. What I do like by they look, are expensive and does have their limitations, while their cheaper wifi versions are way more apropriate for long term use. Do not buy your stuff around ecosystems but the other way around. Choose smart. The problem is, most people will want something to work right out the box and don't want/know to tinker with scripts and code. Welp, Hoooome Assistant! :) EDIT! while listening again your video, just bought two diff. Shelly switches to try them out. And a yeelight led strip for my Mrs. Thank you Paul!

Amazon Alexa is the best for home automation, it has the most skills. Echo dot 4th generation has zigbee builtin (to control my blinds, doorlock, light bulbs, etc.). Also, Google can't add a device to more than 1 room or group; example: kitchen and family room are adjacent to each other and I want the lights in both room to turn off if I say all, as well as independently turning off either room. Alexa is inexpensive so I bought 8 to equip every room with Amazon Alexa for voice control so that I can just ask 'turn off the lights' and the echo in that room knows to turn off those lights and not other lights in the house. Google app's fonts are really really really tiny for my old eyes. All 8 of my Amazon Echo devices have a clock... very convenient to tell the time or see a timer's countdown. or better sound, I have a few of my Amazon Echo dot 3 with clock output the sound via its 3.5mm headphone jack to my Denon HEOS speakers.

I sort of agree to a point but I have had my light switches for about 3 years now and they are Zigbee and I unfortunately bought the Echo with a built in Zigbee hub to find the manufacturer, while using a Zigbee protocol, did not use the Zigbee protocol in the Echo but used their own version and all the switches only hook up to their proprietary hub. I contacted the manufacturer of said switches and they told me I had to use their hub as no other Zigbee was compatible with their products. I could swap my switches but I shelled out $300 AUD for my switches and I could not return them as they were not faulty. No where in the advertisement for their products does it say it only works with their Zigbee only. But after watching your video on the Hubitat I was considering changing over until I saw the $250 AUD price tag. I am quite happy with what I have but may consider swapping if they fail.

You can't get the Echo hub with ZigBee in a lot of countries. For example in the Netherlands you can only get the simple Echo from Amazon. So Google is bigger in that respect over in the Netherlands. And Google speaks Dutch while Alexa doesn't (yet). So a lot of things depend on Amazon's strategy.

A lot of great information told in a really interesting way, the question I still have is other than profits, why did we ever need a smart hub to begin with?, why are smart home devices so much different than TV remotes,, car fobs, or any of the other thousands of things we had that didn't require a hub‽every wifi device has a unique mac address, your laptop/phone should easily be able to do everything the hub does. Printers do far more than toggle on and off which seems like pretty much all the hub does and we never needed a hub for them to work on wifi. It all seems like such a waste created for no more reason than to create more profits. Here is device x but rather than actually just working as you thought when you bought it, you need to buy controller y, then we can upgrade either the device or controller and extort more money out of you

The problem for enthusiasts bis that they will never deliver the complexity we desire in Amazon or Google platforms. Node red / Webcore type automations are not likely based on everything we see and have seen from major companies.

@NeilNatic 3 года назад
@@robert.wigley agreed! Will be interesting to see how that continues to do. If amazon and google simplify it so much the need will be far less than today as the hassle brings less value. @robert.wigley
@robert.wigley 3 года назад
@@NeilNatic No matter what Amazon and Google do, I can just never see there being the powerful automations that you can create in Home Assistant, as they will need to keep it simple. @NeilNatic
@NeilNatic 3 года назад
@@robert.wigley when I look at Webcore I feel that's digestible enough as an advanced options page for a normal user. Maybe not mode red. Make it super simple like HA normal automations then an advanced options button.
@robert.wigley
@robert.wigley 3 года назад
@@Reprint001 I agree it is more complex, but the UI does actually allow you to do simple automations now without really touching YAML at all. I have only come to HA two months ago, so have had the ability to use the UI since I started with it, but I prefer to edit the YAML directly. I haven't even tried Node Red yet, as I am happily using YAML. Each to their own. At least there's options to choose from and it does look like HA is becoming simpler to use in almost every monthly release.

Paul, although I love your shows, I don't think that you've hit the mark on this one for the following reasons: 1. One of the key competitive advantages of HomeAssistant and Hubitat is the ability to operate locally. As more and more info gets transferred to the Amazon cloud, I predict that that this aspect of both platforms will be a key advantage over the internet based Amazon Alexa. 2. Both Home Assistant and Hubitat have a 2-3 year lead over the currently available Alexa programming ability. Their ability in this area may be compared to an elephant, while that of the Alexa is like a mouse. 3. The flexibility of dealing with multiple protocols (including wifi, zwave, etc.) and multiple vendors will be another key advantage. Most individuals who have invested in Home Automation on a serious basis have many devices from many vendors that use many different protocols. Amazon (with others) announced CHOIP in December 2019. What have they done on it since? NOTHING!!! Perhaps Zigbee will win the race, but it won't happen for many years (if at all).

Yeah, this was or rather is only a question of when not if. The moment I invested in getting SmartHome Devices I knew I do not want to be dependent on HUBs for every brand. Once I discovered Home Assistant, I was at least somewhat at ease. But I am a Nerd anyway ^^ And in regards to Z-Wae, they have never been a compelling choice here in Germany since they cost almost double the ZigBee.

Using an Echo for the vast majority of people certainly makes sense. It’s less confusing and now that Amazon have put zigbee into their hub more and more companies will jump onto supplying bulbs, locks, sensors, etc. Hopefully this should push prices down. I just hope it doesn’t stop competition from other speaker/hub suppliers I.e. Google

Samsung users are migrating to Hubitat in large numbers. Mind you, they do have issues converting all of their current devices over, but ways to do convert more SmartThings compatible devices, are still progressing. The dent in Samsung has ZERO to do with Alexa, and people who expect echo devices to "eventually" evolve enough to do what they want live on a complete different planet all together. Hub users have hubs because they are smart enough to realize, "routines" will never provide the smooth integration between devices a hub can. Also with one login and password, vs. one for each device you own.
@AdmiralBison

I’m sick of hubs and have no interest in Amazon’s hubs either. I got a IIFX lighting instead of Philips Hue because it requires no physical hub, you can control and manage it with either your phone/iPad or an app on the pc/Mac + no additional hardware and cleaner, minimal set up. looking for universal remote controller that can still learn and would have all the communication components and protocol all contained within the controller - Infra, Wi, Bluetooth, radio, gyroscope and act like a hub itself - can connect to a pc/Mac via usb-c for advanced configuration. Logitech harmony elite seems to be the best one so far, but it still uses a hub.

Paul, I think you are right on the money. Personally, my smart home focuses entirely on WiFi devices in part because of crap like this. I don't need a bunch of "hubs" in my house. I have a smarthome hub in HA. In terms of Amazon Echo routines, while perhaps they have gotten better, they still suck. Echo routines can't handle complex conditions (someone left and has been gone for more than 5 minutes, but someone else is home). It would actually be pretty unusual (in my opinion) for real automation to not be based on a complex condition. I suspect most of us don't actually do everything on a permanent strict schedule. Thanks for the great video. Always insightful. Cheers

I think of Google as smart speaker and nothing else, it's part of my smart home. It plays music/radio, answer my questions and controls my device's via voice. What I want to know is what Tuya is up to, my smart device are controlled by there app(ZigBee hub or WiFi). These device, relies less via Google voice and more on sensors, like switched, detection, ect.. Tuya/smart life app is brilliant.Super markets like Lidl, Asda and Tesco all use Tuya.

Interesting video. I've had a lot of bad luck with wifi only devices due to a large area to cover, therefore poor coverage, and also every time the wifi router went out, half of the wifi devices had to be restarted. So I went with the Lutron Caseta hub for all my lighting, ceiling fans and shades and I haven't had a single hiccup since. I sure hope they don't get rid of their hub!

I purposely looked for devices that were Wi-Fi first and compatible with both Amazon and Google AIs. But over the course of the last year I have literally peppered my house in Amazon devices. Paul was spot on about Google dropping the ball and has not led me wrong yet. Now that said, I do believe Ring still runs with mostly Z-Wave plus on their security devices and their 'works with Ring' program. Seeing how the alarm base station can be considered a Z-Wave hub, and are still under the Amazon umbrella, I'm curious how that pans out in the future.

I am not 100% in with WiFi stuff because this is sharing the time with other devices that are connected to the same WiFi, and this reduce the performance of the other more powerful devices like the laptop or the mobile phone! I know that the ZigBee operates on the same band than the WiFi 2,4Ghz but for the wireless this signals should be considered as an interference and the WiFi is designed to overcome this! Plus AC AX WiFi are using other bands than 2,4Ghz! My humble five cents. It should be super cool that the CHIP would be designed using other bands than the wireless and very narrow channel, but I think it will work as Bluetooth or WiFi 2,4.. :(

I did not get into smart lights etc at first because of just this. I know how these things go and I didn't want to spend a lot of money and end up with a brick. We just started using smart lights because of Govee wifi that works with Alexa and they seem to be a pretty steady company. The prices are good too. I did look at Shelby but at the time they only had the white smart lights not the colored ones for the US. The more I use the smart lights the more I want to buy more. 😂They work well with Alexa too which is nice. What about cloud reliance as a factor? No device that depends upon it to operate is truly viable where high reliability is required. CHOIP may be problematic for users with high numbers of devices, creating bandwidth bottlenecks and IP addressing limits.
