About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

As someone who was fortunate enough to get early time with the 1040 prototype, it is worth more than they ask retail for. In my almost 14 years recording experience I can say that the diversity you can get with the control panel will make up for the price easily. It replaced 4 mics in my studio (total cost a bit more over 5000 dollar) and I am planning to get more for a stereo pair. It is always worth getting 1 excelent FET or Tube mic for any studio (normally a Neumann, old Telefunken or these days SE Electronics RTN), so if you treat the 1040 in this category, its quite competitively priced imho.

@Joe also in regards to the China comment, I've had one for 10 years and it's never had an issue. The build quality is so high, when their microphones were recommended to me by a studio in my college days, I didn't even think they were made in China. It's a "hand made" (in China) product, according to the paperwork that came with mine... 😁😁😁 But as far as my experience goes, it's a quality product...
@Microang
@Microang 2 года назад
@Joe it's true, but if he wants to show off "affordable" products, how about something that's not $3,000+? He mentions it's "affordable" in the video. I'm just giving a actually affordable multi pattern tube mic suggestion. I'd need a lot of convincing the this thing is actually 3x better than the SE. 🤣🤣🤣

I had a chance to work with that Lewitt mic about two weeks ago. The studio we were at called Seeflection Studios has a lot of different mic's. I believe they said they have about 150 when we were going through the tour before choosing them. We listened to the Neumann 149 and that 1040. For violin and vocals there really was no comparison. Very different microphones. The violin had much more life and was amazingly clear sounding with its tone on that Neumann. The vocals sounded more "open" and like unmuffled especially when Teresa pushed hard. We did blind ABC, ABCDE, etc for each person and instrument and we never wound up choosing the 1040. Probably because their studio had a lot of amazing mic's. I can certainly see great uses for the 1040. Especially if the studio has a somewhat more limited budget than the one we chose.

Lewitt showed in their own video that the normal pop filter they provide is too close to the microphone to be as efficient as it can be. I wonder if they'll make a new version of that old pop filter that fits their current microphones, but has more distance (or just another layer farther out like this new one has).

About the carbon fiber... yes it is a lighter material for making frames. HOWEVER, it is brittle. Carbon fiber structures are far less impact resistant. HOWEVER #2... maybe they also put some kevlar in the frame, which would fix the impact vulnerability issue. This is how F1 race car chassis are made to be crash resistant.

Oh dude, if changing the brand of tube makes no difference in a guitar amp it also makes no difference in a mic. Tubes do not have a sound (which is why in the entire history of vacuum tubes no manufacturers have ever produced frequency response curves for them - because they do not have a sound). The circuit they are in has a sound and the tubes will have variations in gain/volume from brand to brand (and maybe even from tube to tube) which some people will interpret as a small change in sound. But a tube does not know if it's in a microphone or guitar amp, it just does a thing. But you know this because you have done the science already.

If amps and designed to amp signals, mics are supposed to capture sounds the closer to reality they can. Any change to the source sound is an effect or filter, in theory there shouldn't be better sounding mics than others, they should be judge on how faithful they are to the source they are capturing. In the end, like with all audio equipment, the main question is, does it make any sense to pay such X amount for any filter or effect?

Politicians are also "supposed" to tell the truth; then, reality Preamps and amps have electrical in, electrical out - making a 'clean' one doenst stretch engineering too hard Speakers and Mics however are way more physical with a bunch of tradeoffs for HOW you cross from acoustic to electric domain In the case of the 'classics' theres also thousands of hours of engineer experience of how to squeeze the best out of them, a familairty with thier 'sound' - meaning new things have a bit of a hill to climb ... If you are comparing it to a great dual capsule tube like that, either you are not hearing like you used to or you have a mic than needs some work. The L1040 is a very nice, very flexible mic. It is NOT comparable to a great tube dual capsule like the 149 from Lewitt. Period. Seriously guy, either get your mic checked if you have an M149, or get your hearing checked. Double Cheers from Texas! 🤘😎🤘 Hey Glenn! ... So there I was: watching your video... Great job... and looking up the Lewitt microphones and BAM!! Your example song hit my ears with some super Lewitt sweet-sauce!! WOW that sounds phenomenal!! Glenn when I refer people to your channel, I tell them; that you tell the truth and you put your money where your mouth is. Most of my friends are grateful ✌️😎✌️ The way I can tell this is a great microphone? Everything Glenn has described (with regard to the progression of Specter Sound Studios) from acoustic treatment, to mic placement, to speaker changes in cabs, to drum tracking... (Minus singing, for now) and I could go on! And? You can hear the things Glen has been describing, ..., and it's not just in our faces. It sounds fantastic! Bravo Lewitt! Bravo Glenn and the Spectre Crew! All the best! Back to the Super-Sauce! M

I can't really justify spending $3500 on a microphone, but thanks for helping me decide on a microphone. I just ordered the Lewitt Audio Microphones LCT 440 PURE. I was trying to filter through the large diaphragm microphones in the $200-$300 range, and you just made up my mind. Awesome!

Can we hear you singing when you review a microphone? You could sing Theme song to Shaft, Feelings, 1-877-kars4kids, etc .. but seriously great review!

I think this would only be good in the home studio or especially in the budget studio business. A real studio would want something that sounds more unique and well... better. All those very cool analog components create impeadance loading on the circuit that makes it a little dull to me. I'd rather just have the one magic mic for each instrument (2-3 HQ mics? and a bunch of lower mid tier mics for the band).

I'm somebody who almost always prefers a vintage look and feel (not to mention sound) when it comes to gear. But I've gotta say, there's nothing about this design I don't love. Carbon fiber body, innovative mic cradle design, magnetic pop-stopper mount. And the detachable remote? You gotta be kidding me! I also REALLY like the tube window. That's a nice touch for the vibe's sake. Nothing like the nice warm glow of a vacuum tube to get you in the right headspace. Great video, Glenn! P.S. Don't panic, and always know where your towel is.

I’m changing my bass strings as I watch. I’m not a metal player, but I find a lot of value in this channel. I recently recorded some solo demo stuff and the studio had one of these mics. I accidentally bumped it when I was rocking out and I heard Glenns voice screaming out the back of my head to keep my bassy booger hooks off the equipment. I’ve grown here.

"Drum sample replacement is lame" and "I always reamp guitar tracks that were recorded direct" is a weird hill to die on. I get the distinction, but the only real difference is that you spent a lot of money on amps. I guess it matters more if you only ever record Canadian metal.
@CyberChrist
@CyberChrist 2 года назад
Your analogy would be right if all notes were replaced with other notes from another guitar, played by another guitarist on another amp, recorded with another mic in another studio. No points for originality.

Glenn, What lavalier mic would you recommend for on the go and outdoor settings? I'm looking to do some live streams in the outdoors with my laptop, guitar isn't a concern as it'll be running though asiolinkpro drivers -> ampsim-> obs. The use would be primarily voice Thanks 😎

Bro I would suggest a condenser mic, but I'm also not glenn, lol
@youngroyalty7991
@youngroyalty7991 2 года назад
Not glenn, but really any lavalier mic should do, although I’d recommend a dynamic mic as well, something like a good ol’ SM58 for its damn near indestructibility and ease of use. It’s also got a very short range for what sound it picks up, so rest assured it won’t catch too much noise. Lav mics can be a touch delicate with clipping and boomy as they’re right on your chest where a lot of the voice resonates, so that’s why I’m suggesting a standard dynamic mic. Anyways, happy recording :)

Hey Glenn, this may be common knowledge but idk the actual answer. If I were to buy a nice mic, I would want a nice preamp. Can I run a nicer preamp into my focusrite 18i20 and get the benefits of the nicer pre without ruining the signal in my focusrite?
