Thank you for being one of the few reviewer who actually auditions mics IN CONTEXT (with an real vocalist). Most guys just do acapella vocal tests, or a solo instrument, which tells us very little about how a mic sounds in most real world usage scenarios. As someone who has tested over a hundred mics through the years, I find that the qualities, strengths/weaknesses of different mics and their designs are much easier for the average listener to accurately discern when hearing the (gain matched) signal contrasted in context against music, or other musical backdrop. These distinctions become even more apparent with mixing and further processing. Ironically, I also find that when your room is acoustically right, and your gear is decent, the differences between between microphones of similar topologies tend to be smaller than people realize. So in my experience people should spend more money treating their recording environments, and then test mics.. lol. Hopefully more content creators will start taking a similar approach as you, when it comes to audio reviews.

You should check out Produce Like A Pro's review they did a full song with Drums, Guitars (acoustic and Electric) Piano, BVs and Lead vocals 9 times, on 9 diferent settings! LOL That is thorough

i looooooooove the review i mean could you ask for more? hmmmmmmm weeeeeell now that i think of it ... maybe in front of a very distorted guitar amp ? With all the overtones that could show more precisely how the differen settigns sound ... but as a review for the vocal side of things you (as always) did an amazing job :* and the mic itself is also uuuultra interesting

Excellent video. How does the 940 compare to the 1040 since 940 can do the Tube and Fet combo as well, just not the dark, clean, saturated settings. Worth the extra $1K?

If you already have great Tube mics and looking at U87 for a FET would you still recommend this mic over any other Fet. I have a U67, chandler REDD, CMGS7, SM7B, TLM103, Shoeps etc. U87ai seems like a good general Fet that would fill what I'm missing but this mic seems great. I won't sell any other mics I love them all just looking to fill the VOID for a great FET.

I don’t think you have a void. Get good sources and players and everything you have will record anything you need. “a great Fet” isn’t going to change a thing about the music you record.

Yes, you need a preamp.... What you hear in the video was just the direct mic input on the UA Apollo... not even a unison preamp plugin was used. I like the UA preamps.... have a 6176, but lately I have been going into the Apollo directly... works fine.

The only thing I complaint is that it doesnt include a Rafa. Great review as always. That is an amazing song. The mic is overkill, Lewitt quality is top.

Yeah, problem is if you like a microphone that much and it is only a bit more to buy new then the second hand price of your previous microphone... I guess I will buy the amazing one new 😁 besides 10 year warranty. That's like buying a 350$ microphone a year, sounds reasonable for Les then 1$ a day of ownership. And that my friends is how you convince your partner that it isn't expensive at all 😉

The song sounds minor-ish, I would say : A minor (dorian), with a transition to G minor (dorian) at the end of the song. OR if you want to keep it simple, your can write it as: F Major, with a transition to G major. Its the same notes either way you choose to transcribe it.

I want to love the mic, but it is now the third review that leaves me underwhelmed. It always sounds like the signal is already compressed, it is never airy and dynamic and I am not sure about the remote. I don't think I really am ever going to need one. Concerning the patterns: cardioid is like 90% of all recordings. But maybe I just don't like or need the tube sound. I record most voices and instruments with the Austrian Audio OC818 and am very happy with it.

I suspect 840 & 940 is basically the same microphone with just stripped down features. Most will not need the 1040.

Jup… THAT is Lewitt! Quality just through the board .. and the next one.. and the next one… and all that for the most reasonable price. (Well.. pretty much a steal compared to what you get for the money)
