The Mazda CX-90 is well-executed luxury SUV that’s disguised in price and badging as a competitor to the Honda Pilot, Toyota Grand Highlander, Subaru Ascent, Kia Telluride and more.
Thank you, Royal South Mazda, for letting me test drive a couple of CX-90s for today’s review!

Great review. You make some excellent points, especially when you mention the “fatal flaw.” People don’t buy Range Rovers, BMWs and Mercedes because they are the best cars… they buy them because of the name and the prestige that goes with it. Me on the other hand, I care about value, quality, and reliability. I also care about performance, handling, and gas mileage. I also wanted some luxury. The Mazda shines in all these areas. People who see my Mazda won’t realize I even paid as much as I did for it, and I could care less. I just want a quality vehicle with all of the features that matter to me.

Went to the dealer about two weeks ago to get my CX-9 serviced and checked out the CX-90 in person. Personally I love the car and but it’s just way more than what I’m willing to spend on a vehicle. My CX-9 GT was under 45k out the door. The equivalent trim is 60k MSRP not including the 7.5k dealer markup. Not for nothing and but I’m not spending 70k on a Mazda and I’m a Mazda loyalist. Love it but no thank you. For now I’ll hold onto my CX-9 and maybe in a few years I’ll try to find a used one.

That's a crazy markup. Which region is that? NYC region here, no markups by my local Mazda dealer (actually a couple hundred bucks under MSRP at Palisades Mazda in Nyack NY)

I was considering an MDX Type S Advanced, but for $12-15K Less, this will do nicely in a 6 passenger configuration. You get a 2nd row console, with storage. No massaging seats or 67 speakers, but for that difference in cost, you could beef up the Bose system.

I have a CX-90. I've had it for two months and 4,000 miles. I'm not disappointed in the car. It has plenty of acceleration and handles nicely. Average fuel economy for this period has been 26.8 MPG. Not bad. One thing I don't care for is the seat belt warning. If the car is in the park, it continues to chime. The lane keeping software is just okay. My Subaru Outback had better lane keeping.

As always, great insights. I think the Preferred Plus at $45,900 is the sweet spot. You get the smaller sunroof and higher profile tires, and a rear bench seat for 8 passenger capability. Pretty good standard options too. Drove this recently and found it drove exactly like you want your Mazda to drive.

Same thought here, but many car reviewers forget to mention that the Hybrid Highlander also lacks a physical clutch in favor of a "sandwiched" electric motor. I think Mazda has a small programming glitch they need to solve. I just went to a Mazda dealer and I´m in love with the CX90, I´ll just wait a few months before I buy it so I don´t get the first batch of vehicles wich usually have lots of problems (like the first Tundras with thir turbos, now it´s all a bad memory for Toyota and most people don´t even know about it)

Test Drove, CX-90 after driving the MDX, Q7, and XC-90 and ended up buying a Cx-90 Turbo S Premium. there was no comparison in the driving feel between those 4 SUV's. All V6 models BTW and all AWD variants. Luxury, agility, value, and size all meant that my $60K was being spent correctly and not on a badge.

For my family the fatal flaw is how far behind the competition it is on cargo space and 3rd row space and the fact that you are forced to get a six seat car with a giant rear console that makes back row access harder if you want the top trim. Amazing they can make a car this long with less cargo space behind the first row than a CRV. I'd love the Mazda driving dynamics with a car that was competitive with the Pilot, Telluride, or Grand Highlander on cargo and passenger space.

Mazda continues to impress, from an underdog 10 years go, to now a leader in the premium segment, the mdx, qx60, enclave, xt6, and even the brand new tx need to watch out (Only Lexus can brake into a new segment and already have it fall to nearly last place). Along with the telluride and palisade this segment of near luxury family suvs is on fire. However I do think it can compete with the luxury name plates like u said I don’t think the xc90, aviator, x5/7, gle/s and q7 have much to worry about.

The MSRP with that disappointing gas 25 mpg of the PHEV version makes this car an unattractive option for a 3-row SUV.
@Realistick
@Realistick Год назад
25 mpg as a hybrid is pretty disappointing (this is when the battery is depleted). I think the appeal of the phev is for the people who drive 20 miles or less on an average day, that way they can drive it as EV only! If you don't use it like that, the Inline 6 would be much better.
@David_Journey
@David_Journey Год назад
PHEV owner here: on my 77 mile weekend drive on freeway I averaged 28 mpg. This was with 24 mile range on EV with 7 miles left at end of the day. I’ve been driving locally and mostly using normal mode which prefers EV mode most of time. In that use case my average MPG is 36. 56 MPGe cannot rival Tesla Model X, but the car also cost almost 1/2 the price, so I can live with not having 100 MPGe. If you cannot charge the car at home during night, this car makes no sense, as then you will be seeing 25 mpg on empty battery… that is worst case scenario. Keep in mind that there is also option to charge the battery using the gas engine. It’s not rapid by no means but it helps on longer trips. In stop and go traffic the EV mode is way smoother than ICE engine. If you want linear behavior, then mild hybrid is a better choice.
@sheldonduffy9442
@sheldonduffy9442 11 месяцев назад
In reality, with a normal commute and plugging it in everyday it is much better than the 25 mpg. I have been averaging over 30 mpg with mine. I also prefer normal mode. The recharge function works well also. You can select what percentage you want and you can select it to recharge to around 50% and then once it hits that mark you can drive like a normal hybrid. I did that today during a 60 mile commute. I drove 60 miles of mostly highway at around 70 mph and I only used 1/8 of a tank.
@David_Journey
@David_Journey 11 месяцев назад
@@Realistick Why would anyone buy a PHEV, and never plug it in and use it as a hybrid? 25 mpg represents a penalty for such ignorant choice to decide to log around an empty battery :-D . With regular charging and < 30 mile per day total trip distance I have no problem seeing 39 mpg (of course that is only factoring in gas consumption, not electricity, which may vary based on where you live and rates). Even on a 150+ mile trip with 65 mph, I had no issue getting 29 mpg, starting the day with fully charged battery. And even if you did completely forget to charge, you can switch to recharge mode, and in tens of miles fill up the battery and then proceed using advantages of hybrid operation. That said, for people driving 75+ mph at constant speed - they won't be seeing any benefits of PHEV and may be better served with a gas engine.

I don't think you get it , this car starts at 40K! so can be bought on same budget as generic priced and designed Kia , Subbie, Hyundai and Pilot or Highlander at the same time there are more than plenty (maybe too many) trims in between to lux loaded 61K model and that turbo S model is offering fantastic on budget alternative to BMW Audi Mercedes Volvo or rather underpowered and overpriced Honda MDX non type S and even that uses V6 so a cheaper less generic powertrain not a I6 like Mazda does . I think that 40K select is a steal trim , it has more than plenty of room for family of 4....once there is more kids and bigger kids than minivan would be recommended anyway . Wet clutch and electric assist power will need some fine-tuning and hopefully can be done with TCM update as on any any new model . I would recommend to lease it not buy it just yet .

I get it, that's why value was the second reason I labelled in this video! I just think the others offer more family oriented features and storage so I don't think it's going to steal many people away from those brands. It has a better shot against the premium stuff if people can get over the brand name. Additionally, it's important to note that the other brands ACTUALLY BUILD THEIR BASE MODELS, right now the cheapest CX-90s are $47k which I really hope changes soon unlike the CX-50 which still forgets the base model.

@@Realistick Are you aware that at my local dealership there is a Select model at 39K with Inline 6 engine , 8 seats , 8speed tranny with mild hybrid 48V system allowing it for amazing fuel economy and my friend got 31.7mpg on highway at 70mph than it comes with super nice projector headlights , very solid base stereo, durable and comfortable leatherette seats, and 19" 265 55 alloy wheels , car feels super well composed and can be bought for less than much much cheesier Subbies , Pilots , Kias of this world while it offers dynamics close to BMW and Porsche . That is value ! Mazda does not want to design another huge space bloated Pilot , Atlas or Kia, Mazda wants to build great to drive 3 row and you clearly don't get their priorities where there are many trims to fit your needs and budget and at 61K is offers fantastic alternative to BMW Mercedes that with 3 rows will cost you 30K more.
