For me the worst thing about owning a Leica is accepting that my photographs still suck and the problem isn’t with the camera.

Autofocus for tracking frogs is now something I desperately need in my life. Little dudes always hop so quickly and erratic!

Like 99% of you watching, I can't afford a Leica or won't ever own one, but you can still apply this philosophy to whatever camera you own now, whether it's a decade old point and shoot or a modern mirrorless. Mattias always shares his grounded photography perspective no matter what camera gem he's dug up, and that's why I come back even when I'm not always interested in learning about the specific camera. Well, that and the photos. Always good stuff 👍 Oh, and the ISO dial is seriously cool.

Great video as always. I find that as I go deeper into photography, all the latest and greatest features become less important to me. It's nice to see a camera that is pure photography, and the fact it has no screen makes it such an authentic experience.

I took so many analog pictures this summer with a Nikon FE and some manual objectives. I think about what you said in the live stream about 262 sometimes. "It has no features." :) I find it is hard to describe but let's put it this way : There is something magical about not seeing the pictures immediately after taking the shot. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts on this with us.

What strikes me the most is that it's focised on one thing and nothing else. The photos themselves say it loud and clear. Great umages that felt like they did not need too much post processing. This video just adds a wonderful flavor to my morning tea. Fantastic as always, Mattias!

I don't have a money for a MD, but I love my M6 for the exact reasons listed here. It's a pure experience that keeps you in the moment, and that helps me get shots.

That's the digital version on the M3 I picked up in 1974 and still have. Just the controls necessary. The 262 even has the ISO control on the back, just like the film indicator on the M2/M3 bodies. Perfect. Now, If I can just find one for under $1000 I'm set! hahaha

Got mine about about 6 months ago and love it. It takes me back to my original photography days, manual everything and slows me down. And I own, NZ6, NZ7, LeicaQ2, Fujifilm50r and just sold my D850. This has become my daily goto camera.

You nailed it with this video, this is why we love Leica - it just takes photos, and it's great at doing it. I'm a member of a couple of photo groups on Facebook, and there's tons of posts every week about how many focus points a camera have, how fast the eye focus is and so on. Tiresome. I've stopped to contribute to those groups, because you get stamped as a person who just buy a luxury camera when you mention Leica. Yes, they can be expensive, but then again I don't have to buy the latest and greatest every year. Also, I don't have to carry around on thermos sized lenses. Speaking of lenses, one of my favourite lenses is a 35mm Summicron ...from the 70s. Great video, Mattias! Also, love your photos on Instagram! /@reddotgram

Hey Mattias, I have to say, I don't really watch many gear review videos these days. But, the way you put out information... just more useable and interesting. I still shoot with the 262 (not MD) and am more than satisfied with that body for shooting digital. But, after watching your video, I can really see the benefits of shooting with the MD. Thanks for another enjoyable video, man.

Haven't watched one of your videos in a while (I guess I've had a bit less GAS lately :P) and I just gotta say how pleasantly refreshing your videos are. It's like drinking a really great drink that refreshes, nourishes, is like a fireplace with a blanky-blank, a friendly hug, a high five and a good glass of green tea all at once. Basically a good brandy but alcohol isn't as soul nurturing as your videos :-)

I remember when I first found and subscribed your channel on the old OG Blackmagic pocket cinema camera videos about cheap vintage lenses. I got a adapter for a FD 50mm today as well as an Angenieux 12.5mm that really sells the pocket factor. Wanted to say thanks for inspiring me this long ago. For photography I recently got my first ILC body after living on a compact for 2+ years. There are two cameras in my collection that I use for "only photography". A old and cheap Zeiss range finder with in build meter and a point and shoot. The one always has b&w while the other has color loaded. And I bring them with me a lot. I doubt I will ever have a Leica, but you never know. Right now I am building thermal cameras to be useful for filmmaking and photography, I really enjoy the look as it's something you have never seen before

A screen less M, hell yeah, my fav, this is how every leica should be! I own the M edition 60 and love it! Defiantly Leica got it right by having the ISO dial at the back, lovely to use with both thumbs, both your hands are on the camera and both the 2 thumbs at the back, so the task of changing ISO is a breeze, I own an M10-P as well but this is more fun to use! I really enjoyed your vid here, truly awesome, straight to the point and yes this has black paint that will wear and leave that nice brassing around the edges. PS - battery life on this M-D is incredible!

I’ve been using the MD 262 since it came out and agree completely, it is THE BEST digital workflow possible. I still very slightly prefer the M9 Monochrom because there is just more to work with in the files, but if I could only have one Leica, the MD 262 would be the one as it does black and white vastly better than the M9 Monochrom does color.

Super! Thanks for a great review. I shoot my M9 Kravitz as if it doesn’t have a screen. The screen stays off, no chomping. But, I must confess, I do like having it to playback photos at the end of the day, to check my batter level and memory card.

My a7r II with Tamron 17-28 and Sigma 35 f/2 is awesome but I am TEMPTED by an M10-R (using Voigtlander glass), but not sure if I want to fully commit to manual focus with a rangefinder despite appreciating slowing things down and the aesthetics of the cameras. This is something I'll be considering over the next 12 months.

Funny thing about an M-D - its a timeless body since it has no screen to become outdated in the future. It is as raw as you can get with a camera, all post processing will be done in your latest software of adobe to capture 1 or whatever new software there is in the future that supports DNG files, Hey, the MD just works!

Fuji X-Pro3 should have make this approach since they speak about "Pure photography". This camera right here is the one that deserve to be called "a digital camera for pure photography". Yup...not X-Pro3, not the M-10D and not even Epson as since they have screen or have the ability to chimp in some ways. I recently picked up M-P (240), I wish I could get this camera instead but the price is almost double and closer to M10 price. So I just use half case that cover the back screen and just pretend that it's the M-D...both have similar sensor anyway. Oh, great video and pictures as always Mattias!

This M-D is the best analog a like digital as you can get. Those Leica M-s has something special, have brass M240P and i love it. Once you try you always return to them. Nice and short review, thanks man.

Upgrading from an M8, what used Leica M would you say is the best value for money in 2020? Low light shots being my main gripe with the M8.

Whatever camera or lens is used as subject in your videos, the way you describe it always makes one want to go out and buy one 😎

Between this, the Nikon DF, the Epson RD-1, and perhaps the Fuji GFX 50R, it will be quite the decision to make once I’m in a place where I can afford a “luxury” camera of sorts.

It's always fun to use analogue camera like film because it forces you to take your time to compose and think. Digital cameras are convenient tho!

Love that this camera exists. So tired of each new Japanese camera that only gets "fixed" a year or more later via software, only to be "outclassed" by the 4 other cameras that were since introduced, themselves also requiring further development after being released. The industry continues to chase features, not photographers and I'm sick of it.

the loss of that focus on stills and shooting is a huge bummer on modern cameras. The R5/R6/a7 whatever are cool but as someone who dosnt care about video they just look so cluttered

I love the idea of a camera that “feels” completely manual and analog but shoots digital raw files. But I could never justify buying a camera at that price. Would not feel comfortable walking around with a camera that expensive.

Have to admit that I'm not happy how much you love your Leica. I love my GR III and my fujis that you also enjoyed. I don't know that my wallet will allow me to follow you on this one but someday...someday I'll play with a Leica.

It’s hard to explain but I’m glad that they exist without compromising heritage and are still made in Germany, properly.

I think the biggest downside to shooting without a screen to check your shot is not getting the exposure right. Which doesn't really matter if you're shooting RAW anyways so in that case there's no worries and it's a great camera. It might just take a bit of work after the fact to get the image just right.

Cool, do you shoot some film , most of the manual film cameras are precisely that, no distracting buttons and settings.

I bought my first Leica 3 months ago (M-P 240), and the more I use it (while I do love it), the more part of me wishes I’d fully committed and gone for one of these...

Can't decide between Leica M-D type 262 and Leica M10-D. It cost $4800 used for M-D and $7100 for new M10-D by luck. Any suggestion ?

Mattias Great reasons to buy. The 262 is also my dream camera after owning about everything. The only thing stopping me is rangefinder alignment as I am in Canada and sending the camera for adjustment to Germany would be impractical. Should I be concerned?

So I have a query Sir... I wanna buy EOS-R6.. Kipon focal reducer with mamiya lenses for photography... Are those 20MP enough for medium format lenses..? I'm mainly in photography amd slight video work I'm a hobbyist IBIS in R6 may help in getting steady shots with mamiya lenses, I think So should I go for R or R6..?
