I still wear a jacket and tie to work as I have done all my working life. It’s like putting on a uniform for business or formal occasions and creates a demarcation between work and leisure. I enjoy putting one on in the morning and it’s good to take it off in the evening and relax. Great video!

I could never wear a suit without a tie; that would completely ruin the point of wearing a suit in the first place. It says something about the times we live in that the simple act of wearing a tie with a suit or jacket sets us apart from the crowd. I will say one thing: it is so empowering when others positively acknowledge our attention to dressing well.

When I took my son to the orthodontist today (clad in the usual sports jacket, chinos, loafers, tucked in shirt, and knit silk necktie), an assistant of some kind remarked "Fancy!" and asked if I dressed this way all of the time. "Everyday," I replied. She then remarked that my son (15 in a few days) was equally fancy. He had on jeans and a rugby jersey with sneakers (trainers). They don't get out much here in Michigan.

To wear a tie is a rebellious expression, it is very respectable, an effort is made and looks professional. Ties will return. In the meantime I enjoy being rebellious 👍

Ties are the differentiating unique statements of gentlemen's suit fashion. It's not only fashionable, but also a personal style.

I'd argue that it *does* provide a grade of warmth, since it keeps your collar snug and close to your neck. Great on cold / windy days. Horrible in a summer heatwave, of course.

Agree Ash - as we have very few options compared to ladies, we should be grabbing all chances to express ourselves and to create the first impression we want with the people we meet, even before we have a chance to open our mouth.

I still wear a necktie with a suit. Unfortunately a lot of the modern men don't wear a tie with a suit. But I'll always wear a tie.

My father was not a high earner. He did not have much clothes. He always wore a shirt and tie when he went out. He always made an effort to dress smart. Casual dress means to me casual attitude. Smartly dressed means your well put together.

I wore a tie for 37 years. I always enjoyed doing so. My profession was a men's suit salesmen. I don't do this anymore, and I miss it. Your information is still so relevant today as it was when I started wearing one almost 40 years ago.

Being retired, I control the image that I send in every situation. In the workplace, the corporation usually controls the presentation and for various reasons says no tie. Many of those reasons are the same ones when wearing ties was mandated. Now it is the opposite. When you are the lone gunfighter, no one gives you grief for wearing a tie since the party line is that “ties don’t matter.” But we know that they do for the reasons that you cited. I found wearing conservative bow ties presses the point further. Then your choice is truly intentional. No one wearing a vintage bowtie, in the same patterns and colors of a regular tie, ever just threw on any old thing in his closet. One thing: since I started my trend, everyone remembers that I “was there”, wherever there is. Also, if you don’t want to be on a jury in the US, wear a bow tie to voir dire. Lawyers, that know bow ties better than most professionals, know to steer clear of you. Neither side wants you on its jury.

I did not know this! I will be sure to wear a tie. I rarely get to wear ties as i live in a humid, tropical climate. My favorite tie that I have is a Madras, woven wool. I'm going to wear it underneath a v-neck sweater with some chinos! (I love all the compliments that I get when I do wear a tie.)

Hello Ash, I recently just thrifted 3 pure silk ties from Italy and one Charles Tyrwhitt Woolen tie for 12 euro total. Great video, no dressy ensemble is complete without the tie.

I can most assuredly inform you that I shall definitely be adorned in a necktie this coming Friday! The reason being is that I am scheduled to work at my seasonal retail position-- one, in which, I am always dressed well above the acceptable attire for the store in general. While I do gravitate between a traditional necktie and a more casual bolo tie (which I have become more fond of over the years), I try to present myself to others in a manner in which I would expect to see someone like myself in a retail environment. Sadly, dress codes have been drastically relaxed over the years, and I can definitely see it in co-workers~ many times, just barely on the borderline of what is considered acceptable. Personally, I have always been of the mindset of "dress for the job you want, not the job you have", so I keep this in mind while choosing my attire for the day. I am typically adorned in a collared shirt when out in public anyway, so taking it to the next level by adding some flair in the form of a necktie while working is really not too much of a big deal for me.

That picture of Churchill wearing a long tie (10:52) stunned me. I don't recall ever seeing a picture of him not wearing the navy bow tie with white dots (I've got one just like it). I Googled images of him, and found THREE with a long tie.

I must confess, I was hitherto unaware of the dedicated day but, as luck would have it, I bought a new tie only last Friday; I attended the London Transport Museum and was surprised and delighted that they had a new range of "moquette" ties in the shop and could not resist picking up an example in my favourite District Line / Metrobus variation. Still an exciting novelty and, as it happens, just in time to take part in the 18th's celebration!

For U.S. Thanksgiving Day I use to wear a tie some 30 years ago, but stopped. This year I'm going to wear a tie, probably under a sweater and continue that until the end.

Lovely video, I plan on wearing a tie tomorrow for the first time in a non-formal situation. I also think part of the abeyance of the neck tie is down to the loss of the suit or sport coat. A shirt and tie alone always looks unfinished to me. Of course the classical look will never change from the suit/tie combo, I'd love to see a video on other items to don over the shirt and tie i.e. cardigan, safari jacket, i think it can look really well done and a bit more casual/easier to start turning up the volume as you say

I am known when at work due to the fact I wear both a tie and a bow tie when at work. I am showing all that I take time to do so as I take both myself and my job seriously

I recently wore a tie and sport jacket and was on my way to my daughter’s wedding in New York City. While walking for twenty blocks I did not see one other person with a tie. In fact I thought some people were giving me odd looks. NYC used to be the fashion capital of the world. Not sure what happened there. Rather sad.

I must confess I take a controversial attitude to the demise of the necktie. Back in the 50s and 60s ties were ubiquitous. Everywhere you looked men wore ties which were often cheap and boring. Today I get great pleasure from wearing my ties because of the rarity of such garments and the fact that I am able to acquire high quality ties at reasonable prices through the second hand market. Nothing stands out more than a high quality silk or knitted tie when your contemporaries are only half dressed in their open neck shirts and sweaters.

I have to disagree with you on the point that neck ties don't help with the elements. I live in Michigan. If I'm going out when it's 10 degrees fahrenheit or less, a ties absolutely keeps me warmer especially if it's a wool ties. It keeps any cold air from getting down the front of your shirt. I do not do anything because other people are also doing or not doing it. I have many ties and a handful of day cravats. I wear them when and where I choose. No one else’s preference dictates my choices.

Never miss an opportunity to wear a great tie. A dinner date? A business meeting? Going to Church or other religious service? A funeral? A wedding? All opportunities to make a quiet, but incredibly powerful, statement about who you are, the sort of man you wish to be seen as. Some people like to wear clothing emblazoned with the colours and emblems of sporting teams of which they are not a member. Some people like to wear t-shirts or caps with symbols or slogans. That's not my style. If people want to know my opinions on (insert political or social issue), then they can ask me. Pick your ties carefully. Pick the tie you wear on each occasion even more carefully. Details matter. And wearing the right tie in appropriate circumstances is one of the things a true gentleman does.

For a man it is a way to wear some colour.

One practical point you might have missed is that we are more overweight these days, partly through not getting exercise during the lockdowns. Hence cutting of the circulation of air through the upper body upwards by wearing a necktie is more likely to make us sweat.

Hello Ash, my grandson was having lunch one day with his girlfriend and they were chatting about work, he is in the Royal Marines Band Service and she is in the Royal Navy, a chap on the next table presumed he was a candidate of the officer training course at Sandhurst. He could not understand how this happened but his girlfriend said to him “ look at the people around this room, and see what they are wearing” you stand out from the crowd by the way you are dressed. They were not in uniform but he wore polished shoes with a shirt and tie and smart, pressed trousers. Made me proud that he’s flying the flag for us chaps.

I love your channel and agree with all your arguments. However, we must keep an open mind and accept that all these arguments are subjective. Those of us who are passionate about the sartorial world love to dress in a classic way. However, all these points are personal, many stemming from our age and the world we grew up in. People who are 30 or younger today did not have the same references, and for them, elegance is a pair of Gucci sneakers, for example. The tie is a reference of professionalism for us, but not for the new generations. I’m very happy that ties are making a comeback in fashion. However, the style and material of them make them quite different from those we appreciate. The colors and patterns as well. They are more of a fashion tool, an accessory used with a very different intention than those presented in the video. I don’t think this contributes to young people today better accepting our ties and how we combine them with blazers, suits, etc. Although I would love to believe that classic and “timeless” ties are truly timeless, the reality is that when we go out on the street in our style, some contemporary people or young vintage enthusiasts compliment us. But the overwhelming majority find it amusing and think we look like we’ve come out of a period film or a costume party. I will continue to wear my ties, my fedoras, my suspenders, etc., not caring about the opinion of the majority. I dress to please myself above all. And if I’m the only one in the environment dressed this way, I will still be confident that I am the best-dressed and that my convictions are enough to make me feel secure in my elegance and distinctiveness, in a good way, from the majority.

I like ties, but to make a statement. I usually dress for the occasion. I wear a tie if I expect others to wear a tie. I come from a working class background. Some people view a tie as a status symbol (snobbery?). I think it's important to analyze your audience and dress appropriately.

The tie is fundamental to men's dress. A suit without a tie is a state of undress. Feminists hate it because it reinforces manlyness.....therefore I love it and always wear one.
