Superman 4 The Quest for Peace is an underrated gem. From romance to Nuclear Man, this movie has a lot going for it and I'm going to name five things in particular that make Superman 4 worth watching.

Listen. I appreciate you trying to put a spin on things. To give a different view but come on. This movie is TERRIBLE! Fortunately it’s laughably terrible. Christopher Reeves and Gene Hackman are legendary but the script was written on used toilet paper. Unfortunately they made Christopher Reeves portray Golden Age Superman who could theoretically do anything. That’s why his powers were all over the place. By the time this movie came out that Superman had passed in pop culture. That made him look goofy. Nuclear Man?! Give me a break. This movie is up there with Mario Brothers and Double Dragon. I’d even watch Street Fighter the Movie before this.

@kenyattafoster8951 Well Aaron Price has been working very hard to remaster and enhance Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. He has even requested that WB give him the original 134 minute cut and put his heart blood and soul into giving the film that finesse. He has remastered and enhanced and updated special effects to many scenes. He has redone the entire opening and closing sequence which is fantastic! 🦸🦹🦸‍♂🦹‍♂

Hope Superman IV receives the Donner's cut treatment someday, adding all the deleted scenes, improving the special effects with some modern cgi, and even give a new end to the film. Doubt that could happen, but it would be awesome to see an improve version of the last movie with Chris Reeve as Superman.

Superman 4's really underrated. Superman 4 is often ridiculed for its plot, but I think it's a good plot for Superman. Superman wanting to rid the world of nuclear weapons seems very in-character for him. Superman's goal is to bring peace to the world, and freeing the world from weapons of destruction is a good way to do that. The scenes where Christopher Reeve's Superman talks about this matter feel very genuine. Also, Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor, who was absent from the 3rd film, returns with his usual brand of fun trouble. This time around, he creates Nuclear Man. Yes, Nuclear Man is a very campy character, but that's part of his charm. Seeing Superman and Nuclear Man fight might look cheap, but it's incredibly entertaining.

If a movie ever deserved a remake, it should absolutely be this one, Superman IV is a true entry into the series and actually ties a few knots from the second film to its conclusion, you can tell that Superman (Kal El) was also done with Lois by the end of II and in this film you can see how he knows better and can see right through Lois Lane for what she really is, which is why he feels that she shouldn't be allowed to remember their affair, he handles her almost carelessly in their flight, it's like the magic just isn't there anymore, or perhaps the magic was illusion that no longer works. It's also a look into Superman's character development, in II he was careless and selfish in his pursuits, now in IV he is completely selfless and perhaps too protective of the Earth, maybe tying his cape a little too much around the planet, he creates problems that he himself has to resolve and admits by the end of the day that he can't do everything. Which he should have realized when he saved those people on the train, even he was very limited at that time, leaving the rest to the paramedics. And that's what he essentially does at the end, he leaves the world to the humans but will do his best when he should. Returns only existed to complicate things and pay tribute to Reeve, and the less we talk about III the better. And although Man of Steel is very much a different Superman, it's perhaps too different because it just doesn't feel like a Superman film, while Superman IV very much does.

I remember reading some fun facts about Superman 4, one of them was when Nuclear Man was being developed, Christopher Reeve was approached to play that part as Superman's polar opposite, or a much darker version of Bizzarro

It is plenty silly but in a good way. Also noteworthy is that John Williams and Alexander Courage contributed some fantastic music to this film. Nuclear Man might be a goofy villain but he had an epic theme song!

I agree with this list 100%. I was born in 1987, the same year this movie came out, and I really loved it as a kid. I thought Nuclear man was an awesome villain, and Lex Luthor is great as always. Christopher Reeve is also my favorite Superman. Watching this at 35 is a little cringe, because the special effects are extremely bad, but the nostalgia of watching this as a kid makes up for it, and I still enjoy it

cold war kid here - _I agree.. the basic story is POWERFUL and Superman's speeches are AMAZING-- The concept is precisely what Kal-El should do next -- BUT--- The last 20% or so is ABYSMAL-- the fight w/ Electric Man.... the way he gets his powers back... the human breathing in space.... WHY Superman goes back on his ideas about the nuclear cleansing... The deal w/ nuclear man suddenly wanting the girl he sees in a newspaper...and then superman being there to greet him...YUK

Straight up, no cap... the only reason Superman IV ended up a weak film was because Cannon Group screwed the production over by cutting the budget in half so they could fund other shitty movies which resulted in shoddy fx, some of which were incomplete, and heavily edited because scenes didn't work due to lack of budget. This movie had it's heart in the right place, but Cannon ruined a potentially solid return to form.

Cannon wanted the prestige of a Reeve Superman film, but didn’t have the resources for it.

This movie had excellent potential. It was the first movie I ever saw that had scenes in the trailer which aren’t in the movie. I think if they had added those scenes, the movie would have been a lot better.

If Mark Pillow's performance impresses you most when he speaks, listen again, a bit more carefully this time... that's Gene Hackman's voice, dubbed over the actor apparent.

I think you might not enjoy the whole Lois/Superman romance because it's a product of it's time. Lois is like every woman now, back in the day her career accomplishments, apartment and independence were very much rare and even inspiring. Her lack of interest in romance is apparent in Margot Kidder's brilliant portrayal and her dialogue. It takes a superhero to get her attention as she was a super hero herself in our world. They are very much outsiders and drawn to each other for that reason. Now when Lois has been written and portrayed since she's just another woman with the same accomplishments, attitude and social standing as every other woman. Her only character update is that she goes for other guys as well which makes what they share a whole lot less special. Perhaps because of when I was born and how I was introduced to Superman, I can't enjoy the movie without the Superman/Lois relationship.
@EverydayTape
@EverydayTape Год назад
No. Although influenced by feminism perhaps, I have never seen Lois portrayed in any other way. Stripped of a time period, she is who she is. She’s like every woman now? You mean an annoying shrew? Also, how was she, as you said, a superhero in our world?
@restlessbohemian26
@restlessbohemian26 Год назад
She might be annoying to you, but I find her extremely comical and among my favorite element of these films. She's not literally a super hero. I failed in my attempt to illustrate how she stood out among the women of her day and was a close of a match as he might find in the 1970's. Today there would be a world full of Lois's in attitude and stature. There IS an element of "Taming of the Shrew" in their relationship. It's necessary in writing good romance -- especially if your keeping it family friendly. I would hope they would rewrite Lois entirely the next time around as role and their story is fully exploited.
@EverydayTape
@EverydayTape Год назад
@restlessbohemian26 To clarify, I didn’t think you meant she was a literal superhero. I assumed you referred to her in that way for the reasons you mentioned, but I wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I think we have a difference in taste when it comes to their relationship, and that’s okay. I don’t find it to be a good romance, not at all. I feel it to be incredibly lopsided. Unlike taming of the shrew, she’s just a shrew, and stays that way. There’s no push and pull from both sides, just from her. Also, unlike taming of the shrew, the man doesn’t need to be civilized in this situation. Superman is already perfect and a complete gentleman (which makes him kind of a dull character, but that’s a different conversation)

I loved it as a kid, too! I think it was because it felt fun, you know, compared to how dark Superman III got at times. About my other channel, I have a long video about Steve Jobs and Apple that I have put a lot of time into, but is currently sitting on the back burner. It's a bigger video than I've ever done before, but I've gotten a little disheartened lately, as most of my video haven't really taken off. Thank you for inquiring though. Superman is my favorite superhero of all time, but this movie, batman and Robin, and catwoman are the worst comic book films of all time. Pointing out 5 positives in a movie with 100 negatives, doesn't it make it a good film. The script is lazy and thinks the audience is stupid.
