5 Reasons You Don't Need a Grinder Pump

It is no stretch for me to venture to say that on a fairly routine basis I pick up the phone and the customer on the other end is shopping for a grinder pump. I often discover their not looking for a grinder pump at all. In some cases, the customer is looking for a pump that can reliably handle solid sewage without plugging, or jamming. That’s not to say many customers who need a grinder pump don’t, but there are a few important things to remember if a grinder pump is your only option.
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard the following.
“My last pump became clogged and now I want a pump that will shred, slice, chop, and grind the solids so I don’t have to deal with this again.”
Though this logic appears sound, many folks make the mistake that a grinder is the solution to all their sewage pumping problems. This could not be further from the truth and can easily (and often does) lead to thousands of wasted dollars and an even more problems than before.
A grinder pump is designed for use in sewage systems where both high head and the requirement to pump solid waste exists. Often, grinders are limited to applications where no septic tank is present and the sewage must be pushed a considerable distance and/or elevation. However, other more specialized applications exist, some having to do with the waste treatment side of things, others having to do with the velocity at which the waste must travel through the pipe. I must insist, in nearly every case, if you did not have a grinder pump previously, you do not need one now.
Grinder pumps are highly susceptible to becoming clogged if stringy material is present. This includes feminine hygiene products, baby and bath wipes, male prophylactics , and even heavy duty paper towels. Grinders are able to grind the solid waste through a single or series of cutting blades located just before the pump impeller. This cutting action requires a substantial amount of additional torque. Of course, as with any blade, the cutters can becomes dull with time, as this happens the pump becomes less effective at grinding and requires more torque to cut the material effectively. When it comes to torque, a grinder pump starts with high torque to quickly chop solids already within its blades. If a grinder pump becomes clogged or the blades bound even once, this can completely destroy the pumps starting torque, rendering the pump nearly useless. I have personally seen a grinder pump become bound on a small piece of toilet paper, this was due to the lack of torque at start. This lack of torque is an indication that the pump had previously become bound and the motor or the start capacitor became damaged. Though a household can easily control what they flush, it can be more difficult to control what visitors may flush.
Another final note before the list of five reasons you don’t need a grinder pump. You will almost never find a grinder pump offered with a warranty greater than 12 months from date of manufacture or installation. This is due in large part to the high failure rate of these types of pumps.
They are very prone to becoming clogged or bound
If a grinder pump becomes bound even once it can ruin the motor or starting components.
Grinder pumps are very expensive to purchase and often require a special control panel which raises the cost even further.
Energy costs are very high with grinder pumps because the torque required to perform the cutting drives up the motor horsepower required which makes grinders very inefficient.
Even in ideal conditions, grinder pumps typically only last a few years before replacement or repair is needed.
If you currently own a grinder pump or are considering a grinder pump for your new construction project, contact us and we can help you evaluate whether or not a grinder pump is right for your application. Maybe we can save you money while providing a more reliable sewage pumping system.

Sometimes, like in my case two sinks, laundry machine is also connected to the basin with my ejector pump. So there's a lot of detergent and soap going through there. The shower is also connected. It's good to know which chemicals or solvents or paints can also mess up the pump.

Thanks for this video! It helped me to decide to get a regular sewer pump, without a grinder. We only have to pump up about 7 feet, and now I would be concerned about the slurry made by the grinder pump bypassing the septic tank and getting into the drainfield. So a non-grinder sewer pump it is!

Hello, I wanted to ask you what the smallest pump size that is commercially available as I am building a small bunker, and all of the ejector pumps I have found are way to big for what I am using it for. Also, can you explain the difference between a macerator, chopper, and grinder? Thanks in advance.

Hi "R.C." would we need to replace our grinder pump (which is in a pumpwell) with another grinder pump because the surplus dirty water needs to be pumped uphill from the septic sewage tank and pumpwell?
@34stzoo
@34stzoo 3 года назад
My biggest issue with my sewage pump in my home is HAIR. It would get caught in the impeller and stop the pump. It's an easy fix by removing the obstruction. I told my wife she has to clean the drain of her hair every time she takes a shower. As for the Flushable wipes, they should be outlawed! I can't tell you how many times I had to call a plumber out to clear a waste line full of those wipes. One time I was standing in 6" of pure human waste trying to clear a drain packed with flushable wipes.
@daniellewachter4694

Hi! Question--I saw that someone mentioned hair below, and that's my biggest concern with either type of pump. Does hair from a shower drain (which I try to limit to the best of my ability, but it still goes everywhere) tend to clog up these pumps? Is one better or worse than the other for something like hair?

I also learned that you never want to install a grinder pump in a system that is connected to a septic system. Because they grind stuff into a slurry and that slurry doesn’t settle and can make it past the baffles of the septic tank into the leach field making the leach field fail!!

I have a full kitchen and full bath in the basement of my home. The current pump motor burned up because of wipes being put in the toilet. My question is; since it an underground basement (most basements are) can a sump pump suffice instead of a grinder?
@RCworstwater
@RCworstwater 4 года назад
No, sump pumps cannot pass the solids that would be present in your application. You may be able to use a solids handling pump that would simply pass the waste through it instead of cutting it up. Give us a call and we can help you determine the best pump for your application: 855.329.4519

Good afternoon, thanks for the vid. Im building a new home. The basement is a 9’ ceiling height so in order to accomplish this with the sewer lateral depth of 8’ they recommend I either raise the elevation of the home (which we’d rather not do) or add a sewer pump. Im very hesitant to put a pump in. What do you recommend? I kind of feel like if the pump is avoidable at all choose that option. Thanks
@rotcod2886
@rotcod2886 Год назад
We're building a home as well. With the bathroom in the basement, and possibly laundry, we'll need a sewage pump. I don't think the pump would be a problem (until it fails). But my plan is just to get a good one and have some sort of alarm down there to alert me if the pump has failed. I assumed we'd have a grinder, but now I'm thinking, no. Don't change your elevation. Build the house you want. This is not new technology. It's done all the time. Just get one strong enough to push everything up and out. But, by all means, don't just take my opinion.

I have a problem with my city sewage. Whenever it rains more than 3 inches of rain in a short time the city sewage gets too much ground water in there sewage it becomes full and backs up in to my sewage to my house. I had to have a back flow valve put in to keep from flooding sewage in to my finished basement. We have to wait may be 6 to 8 hours before we can use the toilets. I have been arguing with the city to put in a proper drainage pump. They keep telling me to put in a grinder pump, because they refuse to fix the problem. I already have 2 sump pumps in my basement. I’m putting in an outside drainage system with another sump pump, to get the excessive water away from my house. This has been going on for years. I know it would be nice, if the city would fix there problem, but what are my options?

For residential applicants this can be so true. Watch what you flush! For commercial applications of any kind this is absolutely not true. You cannot always decide what will be flushed. Had a corporate store where people would flush underwear, shirts, and everything you could imagine, it had to have grinders in it to last 1 day. Also had a customer at an RV Park tell me he did not need nor want grinders so his maintenance men are at a lift station at the back of the park once to twice per month pulling out flushable wipes and other items. His wife told me she was going to have choice words with him for choosing not to install grinder pumps. I had another Truck stop customer (against our advice) try some Sewer Pumps from Home Depot that were much cheaper than grinder pumps he had to buy (1 grinder about every 2 years at $2400E so about $100 month cost and no maintenance money spent taking care of them). After a year or so I visited the site and found a stack of 6 of these $400 pumps outside the fence where they had thrown them after replacing them. When I talked to his maintenance man about the stack of 6 pumps sitting outside the fence he said that didn't include 6 more he had already hauled off. So in less than 2 years they had spent over $4000 (not including the enormous labor and down time replacing the cheaper pumps). The duplex system was burning up the non-grinder pumps every 45-60 days or so whenever stuff got stuck in them from NOT being ground up. Grinders have their use. Good maintenance is always required with any system. Replace the knives and put the proper overloads/controls on your pumps and they will serve you well. If you leave them alone they die an expensive death. All lift stations require maintenance.

How do I really know I need a sewer grinder?. I know the city water tell you that you need one , but seriously these things are costing me a fortune. If anyone comes to my house and put any thing like a feminine napkins or a wet wipe there is a good chance it will destroy the pump I already had one destroyed with a flushable wet wipe. Unless you keep people out of your bathroom, it is almost impossible to prevent some person from flushing things they shouldn't. I currently have an E-one which seem to be top e of the line but had to replace three in 5 years and they are now over 4k for just the pump grinder .

I was told I need a grinder pump (and tank) for my new house because the sewer system is positive pressure. (Btw, I live on a hill that is about 25 to 30 feet above the street.) So I went ahead and had one installed. A couple of months later the 1 1/4" PVC coupling connecting my discharge line broke down by the street. I would have thought that positive pressure sewer main would back flow out of the broken PVC line but it didn't. So I am wondering if just a sewage pump would have worked at a lot less of a cost.

Frankly they can last 20 years but any one of these reasons enough. Adding and I quit the county representative $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 a year in utility prices. But wait there is more if our neighborhood converts to county sewage there is $20,000.00 worth of tearing up our homes and yards To install the system plus a and get this a $36,000.00 county installation fee deferred that can be payed off in time but must be paid in full when the house is sold!?!? So the county assuage there is some Bay preservation act that MAY reimburse Some installation costs in2021 dollars and we are 2 1/2 years from start so add 10% to everything. But my big point is $36.000.00 in home equity the county takes right out of your pocket so anybody wanting to see better sell now!
@davidsilliman4172
@davidsilliman4172 2 года назад
Got foamy about this and my typing sucks big fingers IPHONE but if this plan passed one thing is for sure we will sure get our pockets picked by county sewage.and new homeowners will be upside down on equity with there first payment. This neighborhood is prime 60 homes or less and in the first meeting when the county said we have to get our our plumber the response I heard from fellow neighbors was oh sure I can get my own plumber. I am a retired cost estimator for an international Printing digital graphics and large scale image products. I bid on multi-million dollar projects. I am not bragging but I assure you more is less! The lest neighbors should do is put 60 large scale projects out for bid And award!!!!! Then take the 2 most credible low bids let them hook up the two most challenging homes at COST labor and materials only and then award on the basis of the counties inspections. Winner has most favorable inspection. $5,000.00 install becomes $3,500.00 - a guess yes but 55 homes x $3,500.00 each…. All this and I find the proposal
