This is a question I get ALL the time… “Zach, WHY do I have to learn scales?? How exactly are scales gonna help me learn songs?? Ya better have some answers for me ya bugger!!”
Well guess what, once you understand the SCIENCE behind WHY scales help your technique, you’ll understand why it’s in YOUR best interest to learn them.
There’s a reason SO many piano teachers (including me!) harp on scales. And contrary to popular belief, it’s not just to make you suffer (bwahaha), there’s actually a method to the madness.
Basically, once you’ve mastered your scales in all 12 keys, you’ll actually have 70% to 80% of the muscle memory of a song already learned BEFORE you even practice it!! Sounds crazy, but you’ll see what I mean in the video…
Oh, and it also helps you sightread faster, play by ear, initiate the dreaded “crossovers” that mess up beginners, and more. But you’ll see exactly HOW in the video.
Btw… make sure you stick around to the end, I’m going to explain the Cheat Sheets (they’re free on my website) and then give you the video for the fastest way to learn scales (and REALLY drill them into your fingers. Here’s how to get the cheat sheets
CHEAT SHEET INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Go here: www.bestpianoclass.com/scalesb...
2. Sign Up with your name and email (yes, it’s really free lol)
3. Download your cheat sheet (and get the EXTRA resources!)
Happy practicing!
-Zach

It was fun coming back to this after one month. It reminds me of the work I've put into reading music and establishing muscle memory with chords. I can now anticipate the next keys coming in the melody/bass line without having to stop and configure my finger placement (most of the time ... chuckles).

I recently started practice all 12 major scales starting on each degree of every scale. I can't explain it, but my muscle memory has kicked in and I am playing much more fluently without much effort. So I am looking forward to this video.

Do you practice all 12 major scales in one sitting?
@christinemacdonald7448

Yes! This works! I've been doing Zach's 'dominate your scales' with c major scale for 5 days and I can hear that I'm playing better with a new song I'm learning (that definitely isn't in c major, but somehow just sounds a whole lot better after 5 days of c major scale).

Can you explain how knowing the circle of fifths helps with memorising scales? Is it more the case when just looking at the keyboard? I just don’t see how it would help when playing in real-time, I’m yet to learn my scales though. Right now I’m practicing chords and moving through the circle of fifths but haven’t committed scales to muscle memory yet

Real quick, I'm about to start watching this video, but I just wanted to say thank you for all these piano training videos you've been putting out. This is about the 6th or 7th video of yours that I watch, with another 8 or 9 in queue until I'm done with you for the time being, lol! I've already subscribed though. I just got myself an 88-key digital keyboard less than a week ago, and have been putting in an hour or two a day, and I just need to thank you for all your help, man. I really appreciate you. Right now I'm actually working on a video where I literally open my new keyboard out of its box, and show my progression of the first 100 hours of practicing. :) I'm really looking forward to hitting 100 hours of practice; as right now I'm at about 5 hours, and already the difference from day one is, well... it's inspiring!

Scales ar'nt hard in your head it's just knowing what fingers to use. I was and still am good with the sharps it's the flat keys. Then there is coordination with the right and left hand. Piano majors need to play scales four octaves. If you major another non keyboard instrument then two octaves are required. Scale passages in pieces are always present somewhere in a piece. Scales also help with arpeggi. An arpeggio are chords taken from scales. Master both and you will have better techique.

I've been playing guitar for a long time and never have I come across legitimately good reasons to practice scales. I've been told, "That is what you do" or "Shut up and do it". Understanding the why is so important because it is about developing muscle memory and learning. It helps take the sting out of the boredom because practicing scales gets old quickly.
@katherinejohnson2288
@katherinejohnson2288 2 года назад
Scales are important for guitar, but because they mostly use the same patterns and are just shifted up or down the neck, it's not quite the same as piano. Once you learn a 2-octave G major scale starting on the 3rd fret, there is nothing new to learn playing the A major scale starting on the 5th fret (and practicing the scale in each key quickly gets boring). With piano, that's not truth...a whole different fingering is required to learn the A major after learning the G major. Guitar has a whole different set of challenges of course, particularly when it comes to reading printed music.
