After buying 9 different kinds of pens in the $30-60 range I picked the exact same pen. I have a review video if you want to watch it. I bought 20 more for my students to make bridges and see which one would hold the most compared to how much the bridge weighs. I like how they are fast to heat up and have the slide for speed control. Most of the cheap pens use a usb cord for power and can't keep up with this one when it comes to how much plastic it can extrude. They are also easy to fix...kids can find a way to break anything. Filament went inside the pen missing the guide tube and jammed the filament behind the circuit board. I removed 3 screws and was able to fix it in no time.

You can also use it for welding two prints together the way you would normally do welding.

You could maybe add some metal mesh and heat the whole thing up while printing over it

@@TheNightwalker247 Good idea. It's how many people plastic weld something like a motorcycle fairing that has a crack in it. Use a soldering iron to push staples into it along the tear, to keep it together while melting it together.

I just got one of these for my young fella, and he LOVES it. He is always crafting with aluminium wire and air dry clay and this has opened up options for another tool he can use. I also bought it to help me join my 3D prints together as I print large scale 2d wall art and sometimes my built in snap together joints don't quite work well enough and super glue is messy/ugly. P.S That beard is fanstastic, almost as good as my wife's!

I could use that hair replacement product, if they sell 1.75mm ABS in brunette, and a .2mm nozzle. Maybe go with protopasta real iron filament, for the 80's metal look!

Useful for repairing prints, ones that lifted at an edge even to make it properly dimensional, for brackets etc. Some prints are larger volume for cr10 s5. Need to upgrade it with a addon MOSFET for the heatbed, and use a 20volt laptop power supply to run that. If someone needs to upgrade their setup for ABS reasons. Many heat beds never reach the ideal 110c without adding that upgrade. That original Prussia you run there is good though I heard for ABS right out of the box.

Is there a newer video about that topic on your channel? I was wondering how well it would work to print something with a embossed text and fill it with the 3D pen, e.g. a battery adapter in black and then one could fill in the embossed brand name with the pen. And maybe smooth it with a heat gut.

I used one of these to “glue” a multi piece print together instead of using CYA glue, hot glue, or epoxy. The hot glue gun is what gave me the idea, and if you plan ahead you can build in a chamfer on the mating edges and get a lot of material holding the pieces together.

I recently did a similar this g and after some cleanup the join was very subtle. This pen is still performing well for me.

I got two of these. Both after using them for a couple of weeks after 2-3 minutes of operation begin to have flow issues and I have to cool them down by powering off and use them again for a limited time until the same happens again. Don't know what's wrong but I think a good pen should have stamina over time.

These uses don’t appeal to me very much but I do wonder how well it bonds with moulded ABS for repairs and such. For example, I need to reattach some clips from the inside of my Commodore 64 breadbin. I guess I could try ABS cement but that would probably make a mess of things.
@TeachingTech
@TeachingTech 6 лет назад
People use them to stick together ABS parts. Maybe a good clean first. Let me know if you try it.
@pdjames1729

A small amount of acetone and abs filament mixed together makes an acetone-welding abs cement. (put in glass or ceramic container Not poly cup ;o) Check James Bruton's channel for a guide xx
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 лет назад
P D James My understanding is that canned ABS Cement is exactly that (acetone + ABS). :) It’s what I usually use but the instructions act like it’s exclusively for plumbing/pipes. Thanks! I imagine this could still be useful to add fins and structure instead of just a gloppy layer of extra material.
@pdjames1729
@pdjames1729 6 лет назад
if you can use it on flush surfaces it should need very little extra material once welded... the plumbing glue n bottle of meths with the little purple ball is fine stuff for pvc/abs pipe-ends n the like. I prefer to make stuff if possible, then you can tweak the concentrations/exact type of abs etc...
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 лет назад
Ray Edgley Lowe’s, a hardware/DIY/home improvement/contractor supply chain in the USA, sells ABS Cement right beside the PVC Cement. The containers are identical except for the labeling and they are from the same manufacturer. They have different kinds of PVC Cement from the same manufacturer too, so it’s distinct and definitely not the same as PVC Cement (though it is sold for a similar application). I’m guessing that contractors also use ABS pipes for some things. I’ve (mis)used it for repairing Neo Geo AES shells, a grill handle, motorcycle fairings/bodywork, and other ABS items but it always makes a mess! That’s why I prefer to use it on the unseen inside of ABS enclosures/panels and stuff. Works well enough so far.

does this model here have ability to stop filament and restart multiple times per minute?? the reason i ask is because a cheap pen i bought just keeps going and when you stop the filament it takes around 20 seconds to start again...hard to draw like that and wastes filament etc....

Im wondering if it could be used to manually enforce a model with manually built water soluble support material for internal structures that are only accessible mid way through a 3d print and you dont have a multiple extruder printer. This thought crossed my mind when I was printing the bullseye.

3D print you own cover for the pen that has a better friction fit. I want to buy a pen but only really want to use it to weld other 3D pieces together, any suggestions? Everyone keeps telling me 3D Noodler or Doodler, can’t remember but it’s on amazon probably lol.
@_Khia_
@_Khia_ 5 лет назад
do not buy a 3 doodler. I bought one despite the bad reviews and it broke, it took a year to get a new one under warranty, then that one broke within a month. I took extreme care with it too! If you want my opinion go for the pen that was shown in the video, its cheaper and the filament is cheaper and you can buy generic filament, with the 3doodler you have to buy expensive 3doodler brand filament.

Okay now that I made it to the end... Great video. I love that you maintained your seriousness throughout the entire video as if you were not wearing that beard. Lol! Also when you got to that no name pen that you ended up liking the most - that is my pen! Except I noticed on the box it said 3D pen 2. Mine does not say 2 so I must have gotten their first version. My pen has died and I keep it around because I always think one day maybe I can get it to work again but they're cheap enough I think I'm just going to buy another one. It's awesome for fixing 3D printed parts or welding bits together if something broke off or something like that. And I made this turtle that has indentions of these little shapes that are supposed to be in another color and that top color failed and looking at it I don't think it's going to ever do right so I started looking at 3D pens again because I thought that would be the perfect way to fill in those spots with a different color. Lo and behold I'll end up getting my same original pen again! Maybe a better version of it though. And I'm so glad you mentioned Devin over at Make Anything... He's who inspired me to get into using 3D pens and 3D printing in the first place. He is so awesome! I love everything he does and he's also just such a cool person. But he is some kind of genius with a 3D pen, I mean seriously! There are others but I can't think of their names. But I don't think the 3D pen should die out because 3D printers have become so popular. They definitely have plenty of uses.

Unless you have the patience of a monk and the hand stability of a renaissance artist.... No. The precision of a 3D Printer will always create far better results. I absolutely love my 3D Pen but the amount of practice it took to make anything other than a blob is comparable to learning how to play a musical instrument for the first time.
