What’s your band called dude?

YES!!! Small time bands who try to play 2 hour setlists are shooting themselves in the foot. They exhaust their audiences and piss off their fellow bands and promoters. You aren't Metallica yet and no one wants to watch you play for that long. Half an hour works just fine. Gives people a taste, leaves them wanting more and will help you build a better relationship with promoters and other quality bands in your genre who you can cross promote with.

My bands playing a fest where they want us to play 25 mins worth. We’ve got about 8-9 original songs but we have to pick 6-7 and trust me it’s hard for me especially as I write most of the songs

I find that usually this complaint comes from the kind of people that won't compromise. "He's not good enough," or "he plays X kind of music and I have already defined my band's sound before I recruited a single member." Except what you can get and build from that.

Yeah that's it. I think the disclaimer for this should be is what is the rehearsal for? Is it 50/50 working on stuff/songwriting? Is it a single bandleader bringing completely arranged tunes to the band? For one band I'm in, we found we wasted heaps of time at frequent rehearsals because the 'plan' (ie, basic arrangements for tunes) were not hashed out enough by the main writer. Now, if we had time to be there three nights a week to 'collab' the arrangements until they were exciting, it would be great. But that's not the situation we're in, so recently we've taken a different approach (because only a madman does the same thing that doesn't work over and over again, right?). Now, the bandleader records the basic arrangement of the with bass, drums, 'fake' guitar', 'fake' keys, 'fake' horns etc (he's a bassist) and emails them to me and the keyboardist (to be honest, horns parts are kind of already 100% sweet as per the midi estimation; we may cut bits out) and gives us a deadline: "Lads, we're going to get together to see that what you come up with works when we're together at rehearsal on __/July/2019. Put some parts down (we're doing this because we're capitalising on everyone's strengths for creating their own parts) by ___/July so we can finalise these arrangements at rehearsal." Now, this might be dependent on a certain genre or level of musicianship (this is a now 'by correspondence' collab style we're trying for a jazz funk instrumental group), because I know that some bands are more 'organic' in their collective creativity; ie, they'd rather spend hours in a room hashing out ideas until something 'happens' for ideas relating to endings, bridges, dynamic features etc. But with our band, I can tell you it's working a treat, and because we're not being asked on the spot at rehearsal to magically come up with parts, we have a little bit more time at home (like maybe half an hour more instead of ten seconds) to really create something that both adds groove and excitement to the piece and capitilises on each players' strengths for a more 'what a guitar player would do' result. So in the end, each member is probably spending at least 6-9 hours a week on it individually, but the majority of that time spent is done alone and more valuable to them and the collective outcome. And we basically only rehearse when there's new material for a gig. And (again, maybe it's a musicianship thing; we are trained nerds after all) punters at our regular gig seem to enjoy the new stuff as much as they do the old stuff. I agree with a shitload of rehearsal if it's for working on more than just being able to play songs properly and to an exciting level; if there's extra writing to be done, sure, spend all week on it. But if it's to repeatedly go over things and still see no improvement, well, you're doing it wrong!

You could totally get away with even less than once a week, just expect that you have to put in 5h solo for every 1h with your mates.

3-hour rehearsals 2 times a week = 24 hours of rehearsal/month instead of 12 with 1 3-hour rehearsal. So yeah, 12 more hours of working on your music. That's a big improvement actually.

You want music to be your career? Starting out in any other career requires minimum 40 and at times over 100 hours a week of work. At a real job there is no excuse for any member of the company not showing up at work other than illness or family crisis. There is so much work to be done in a band, not just the rehearsal, the songwriting, demoing and recording, the aesthetic decisions, managerial work, promotional work, and so on, but also the building of a true fraternal feeling between your band mates from where true stage charisma is born, and this only comes from time spent and experiences shared together. You have to go to other people's shows together and be seen out on the scene to get a reputation that will turn into gigs and fans if you can live up to it. Your band will not make it simply because you do not take it as serious as it deserves. Every great band has a story of insane hard work and sacrifice behind them. You guys that think you can patch it all together in your bedroom and then go be Motley Crue out in RL with 6 or less hours a week work, good luck to you and your journey to obscurity. You are starting a small business. Treat it like one or admit your band is just a hobby and you will always suck.

Just cause your bands a hobby, doesn’t mean it will suck... you won’t play stadiums of course and it’ll take longer for your band to improve... but it can still sound great

No. Practice always makes your band better no matter how you do it. There are more efficient ways to accomplish specific goals, but all practice makes your band better.

@@flacidhouse350 I disagree entirely, it's very easy to over practise, if you take the enjoyment out of the experience, it will show in your live performance, and I don't care how perfect you can play your songs, if you're not enjoying it, neither will the crowd, playing a good show live is 80% performance, 20% proficiency, a sloppy band that's entertaining to watch has a million times more chance of success than a proficient band that feels like you might as well just listen to the CD.

Flacid House Yeah and who's sold more records, Blink 182 or Dream Theatre and King Crimson combined? I couldn't find numbers on a King Crimson's total but if I give them a generous 5 mil, compared to Dream Theatres 12 Million, Blink 182 have sold roughly triple at over 50 million and those guys can barely play a bar in time or sing a verse in tune. And besides both those bands still look like they're enjoying themselves on stage and play to stupidly large crowds. (Trust me when you're playing in front of thousands of people, it's hard not to get excited.) They still have great stage presence and look like they're having a great time, but they are also very good musically, so that really doesn't refute my point at all. I'm talking about bands who are still playing small shows to very few people, given that there are 2 bands with equally good music, but one band everyone stands like a statue, make almost no interaction with the crowd, no one even looks up from their fretboard, playing to an unreceptive crowd of 50 people. I don't care how perfectly you play the track after that show the crowd might be polite and clap, but they're gonna go home and forget about your existence. On the other hand a great performing band can play to the same crowd and blow their fucking minds, you can play wrong chords, you can forget lyrics, you can miss entire parts of songs, yet after that show they want to take photos with you, they want autographs, they want to buy you drinks and get to know you, they'll want mementos, they'll want to be your friend, they want to know when you're playing next, they want to add you on social media, hell some of them will even offer you a bed for the night, and they'll talk about you to everyone, hell I knew one guy ditch his wife on their anniversary to go watch his favourite band in a town a 100 miles away.I've seen it a hundred times, bands playing the same show to the same crowd and the one who performs better, even if they're not as good musically steal the show every time. But seriously The Beatles? They were extremely energetic performers for their time and hardly the pinnacle of proficiency by comparison to the other two you've mentioned. Their record producer Quincy Jones called Paul the worst bass player he'd ever heard and said Ringo couldn't do simple parts of the record and actually got other people in to record it for him. In fact he just called the whole band "The worst musicians in the world" www.vulture.com/2018/02/quincy-jones-in-conversation.html Other bands that were known for being sloppy musicians live: KISS, The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Motley Crue. Metallica, Black Sabbath, White Stripes, Nirvana, Van Halen, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Jimi Hendrix (Note some of these are good players, but they often performed while highly intoxicated to the massive detriment of their playing ability) Notice anything? Arguably some of the most iconic bands on the planet and behind some of the most legendary live performances of all time. Of course it is better to have playing proficiency and stage presence together, but hands down if you have to pick one or the other stage presence is going to win at captivating general live audiences every time. I ask you to name me 1 band that puts on a static lifeless show, totally boring to watch but are musically perfect that has reached anywhere near the level of success these bands have.Humans are very visually stimulated creatures if we weren't why bother with music videos? Why don't lyric videos get just as many views as official videos? Why can an interesting music video make a bands career? Hello, Yeah I agree that certain promoters give no options and therefore the choice is taken away however over in the UK many bands are pushing to play for the longest slot available and it's detrimental to their chances. If the band can bring a big enough crowd they hold the leverage and can dictate times etc. You are right though, in this instance go with whats on the table until you have enough control by which point you probably will have enough killer material for a longer set 🙂
