as somebody who was "gifted" a tokay gecko I'd like to nominate them for this list. To say I was not expecting a demonic hellspawn with a taste for blood from an adorable little creature was an understatement of the year.

@@penandinkgal3396 Green anoles, those things are 5-8-inches. For an 8-inch male, a 10 gallon enclosure is all you'll need, and for a 5-6-inch female, even a 5 gallon enclosure could work. I'm guessing you probably meant Green Iguanas, in which case YES, they get as big as a while throat monitor lizard and have a reputation of being incredibly cantankerous. Depending on the size, BARE MINIMU. you need around a 6*3*3 for a typical female, and something like an 8*4*4 or even a 10*5*5 for a male.

@@metaknight115 I would not put a green anole in a 5 gallon or a ten gallon. Yes, I did mean green anole. It’s $5 animal that needs a lot of space, a humid but well ventilated enclosure and UVB. I’d use a 30 gallon enclosure for them. All of the supplies needed for a green anole costs a lot more than the actual lizard and is usually more than what people are willing to provide for a $5 animal. That’s why I think I should be on a list of Cheap but expensive animals.

As a kid my papa would buy me one or two red eared sliders when he went to Florida for the winter each year. I never was taught how to take care of them and was too young to teach myself. Needless to say, there was a reason why he bought me new ones each year :( On the contrary I got an eastern painted turtle when I was 7-8 years old and still have it today at 22, she’s doing great

Iguanas 🚩🚩🚩 I feel that information has gotten a bit better for them over the years, but I remember there being a point in time when people weren't really sharing anything about how to care for these animals or what their temperament was like. Thus, we ended up with a lot of newcomers who got these cool, small green lizards, and they weren't prepared when they got big and grumpy. Iguanas are still very commonly surrendered present-day- I wish more people talked about them so that we'd hopefully end up with fewer situations like these

My dad always wanted turtles so my mom surprised him with two red ear sliders. They started out in a 25 gallon tank and by the time my parents had to rehome them they were in a 75 gallon tank having to clean it every few days they only wanted live fish to catch and it was just such work to keep up with them. Both parents worked an just didn't have time for them. They were rehomed to a friend to had a huge outdoor pond enclosure with probably 20 other turtles hanging out. They have a much better life then we could give them.

Side note with the croc monitor: They are scarily smart even compared to other monitors which are already highly intelligent and on top of that they are NOT food driven which is how most monitors are tamed down and if you break their trust they will remember it and hold it against you

I've never been a big fan of "beginner reptiles" because of how long lived reptiles are. If you get one it's for life! With that said I 💯% agree with you that certain reptiles are not for beginners, and should be left to the experts and for everyone to enjoy at zoos, online or herping with an experienced guide. The top three, plus crocodilians are all things I would love to have but since I'm no expert, I'll leave it to those who are 🐍🦎💚

My favorite thing about reptiles is that they are long-lived. I don't believe in the concept of "disposable" animals, like how some people treat hamsters and goldfish (which is wrong). But I love the idea that I get to care for something for a good long time. I wish my cats could live as long as tortoises.

Not all are that long lived, many only live as long as your average small breed dog that are popular as pets. But otherwise the sentiment behind your comment is very true indeed.

@@MelisskiI feel really bad for pet rodents, I'd say half, if not more, of everyone I know who ones a Guinea Pig unintentionally abuses it. One of my friend's sister owns a guinea pig, and from a single conversation, I found out he's housed alone and never gets his gross poop sack cleaned. Most guinea pigs and hamsters that don't die prematurely due to neglect are given away due to how hard they are to take care of and spend the rest of their lives in overcrowded shelters, unwanted and unloved, not that they can differentiate their owner from a predator.

About retics , one reason they are cheap is that you can find young ones in the wild pretty easy. Our old joke was a baby retic was one under six feet! So if you are getting a deal you can't believe most likely it is a wild caught snake. The other thing is they are escape artists but this is because they are "cage breakers". These are big powerful snakes if your cage has a weak point they will find it sometimes just rubbing the cage during shedding . Miss Piggy managed to pull screws out of plywood but was also adept at popping glass out of the tracks of sliding glass cages. Getting bit by a large retic is no fun sort of like putting your hand in an industrial sewing machine! As I've grown older the thought of having to play twister with a 20 foot retic at 2 AM isn't as much fun as it used to be!

This is gonna sound BIZARRE as a beginner snake recommendation, but if you MUST have a venomous snake, get a copperhead. I'm not a beginner, but copperheads are easy. With enough patience, they actually tame down, but even if you done tame them down, they are super easy to care for. Because they are so adapable, their comfort temps are between 70°f-85°f during the day, and 50°f-70°f at night. Humidity isnt a factor. Feed adults one large mouse every 2 weeks, increase humidity to shed, and your good to go. They keep well on just about any bedding, and the biggest safety measures apply when it comes to enclosure cleaning. Seclude into a corner and cover with a weighted box, and you should be golden. No UVB or super high heat necessary.

This is a good list and I wholeheartedly agree with the venomous reptiles. I’ve kept snakes for years and while I’ve kept rear fanged venomous (garter and hognose snakes), I do not think I would ever keep vipers or elapids. There’s just too much risk involved for me, not to mention I like to handle and interact with my animals. I would never recommend handling a venomous snake to a beginner. As you stated, the people on RU-vid that we see handling these animals are highly trained, have the proper permits, and have the proper enclosures to house these animals. I am not trained in handling venomous snakes, I am not permitted in my state (meaning I do not possess the proper permits to keep venomous snakes), and I do not have enough room to house these animals. For those that do follow their state’s/province’s regulations, have the proper training, and properly house these animals…that’s great. I would much rather admire them from a distance.

GSDs are horrible pets for beginners. As a keeper of German Shepherd, I get the retic analogy! I trained my childhood dogs and learned as much as I could about German Shepherds before getting ours. I think I did a good job as all people who have been in contact with our GSD has told me how well behaved she is. The best thing to do with working dogs is to keep them engaged.

Made the red-eared slider mistake. Fortunately pet store took her back! I am considering a super dwarf from Reach Out Reptiles, I am not a beginner (50+ years keeping reptiles) but only considering it right know, because they are so darn smart! Before you even think about getting a croc monitor check out Crutchfield's bite! And he is a super expert. If I were to get anything more venomous than my hoggie (and I am not) the only one I would ever consider is a copperhead. If I could only have one snake (God forbid) it would be my little male anaconda morph Plains hognose. He is the sweetest, calmest snake that I have ever met. I have been bitten by a lot of snakes in my time, but I never worry that Aspen will bite me. I would have to seriously hurt him, before he would even think about biting. Maybe it is just him, but I think hoggies are good beginner snakes. But if you want a big (not giant) snake get a baby boa constrictor and socialize it well. I miss mine.

Surprising you didn't mention green iguanas. Like retics they're often sold as babies, but they get very big very quickly and they have a reputation for being cranky. They can also do some real damage with their tails and teeth, and need as big an enclosure as most monitors. As for a good beginner pet that's rarely talked about, garter snakes (I believe you did bring them up in a recent video). They're small, active, easy to tame if you get them captive bred, and you can keep multiple in the same enclosure. They're also mildly venomous so you can hawk that to visitors.

I've only been a reptile keeper for about 4 years. I got a Nile monitor last year and I love him. BUT! I did a ton of research and thought about the requirements and challenges they present for months before finally getting them. Even after watching all of Kevin's videos on how to build threads of trust and tame a monitor, it's been a journey. I LOVE my Nile and we both have grown together and come a long way but... The reason I feel they're not for newbies is, for the first 2 months, I was literally holding my hand inside what appeared to be an empty enclosure for hours a day. There is no rapid reward where you buy them and in a month or two, you have a cuddle buddy. Secondly, it is my belief, with my particular animal at least, I will never tame out the reactivity. The initial impulse on every interaction will be reactive. If you give them a minute or two, the brain engages, and they will come and cuddle and sleep on my hand for hours. But every day, every interaction, the first greeting is "I've got a tail whip loaded and I'll knock your teeth out if you move another inch". Plus, there's the whole 3x requirement. The need all 3. Flat areas, climbing areas, and a large pool to swim in so they need an incredible amount of space. I don't feel Niles are as terrible as everyone makes them out to be. They do, however, present a unique challenge that requires tons of time, and will always have to be read before engaging. It's not a "tame it and forget it" pet that you will ever be able to just walk up to and snoot boop to say "Good morning, friend!"

Great video Adam! I think green iguanas and chameleons should be honourable mentions. Chameleons are just SO hard to care for. I was still relatively new (not a noob but not an expert) when I was working at PetSmart and I had *so* many rescue chameleons I almost got out of the hobby. Their care is just so specific and IN MY OPINION it is a lot of work for not a lot of payout. Temperament varies specimen to specimen and depending on the species they can be cantankerous and you likely will not see them frequently if kept correctly. It's why I don't recommend Old World fossorials as beginner tarantulas. They're beautiful, incredible animals and some of my favourite tarantulas are old world fossorials and you *just don't see them* which can be really offputting for a beginner. If you keep them INCORRECTLY (on shallow substrate so they cannot burrow, and thus you can see them) they can be nasty. In the case of chameleons, if you don't give them the necessary enclosure/setup, not only will they likely be unhappy about it but it can also lead to health problems. I put this on here mainly for the fact that veiled chameleons are widely available at big box pet stores like PetCo and PetSmart, and most employees will not give you the proper care information. Green iguanas get big, they're cheap, and they can be MEAN. I'm not talking like a 40 gallon big I'm talking a walk in enclosure that's been built yourself, preferably outside, in Florida. Same boat as croc monitors minus the insane levels of intelligence. Again, great video! Keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte

He said absolutely not way too young to have that kind if animal and he sat me and my dad down and gave us the info on it so even though I really liked "Chucky" I had to let my uncle take him where he was in a ten foot by ten foot by 12 foot room. My dad was so mad at himself for talking to him sooner. Too this day Chucky is doing great with my cousin. I wasn't allowed to ask for pet until i can buy one and all the stuff needed for it with my uncles approval. So word of caution dont get a green iguana unless you know how much they need (space, money, time) it's alot more then the price tag says and that still wont help when they just wake up and decide violence is the only answer for everything especially males.

Me and my girlfriend got given a milk snake and he’s been amazing great temperament but yeah I agree with you. I’ve end up getting given so many reptiles by people who aren’t ready. Chameleon for example people get thinking there easy I find but they end up almost stress killing then or not providing proper humidity. Anyone wanting to own even a “beginner” reptile should spend atleast a full week at the least doing research whether on RU-vid or the internet.

Green iguanas are not great for beginners. When we got one in the early 90s, the only reptile my husband and I had ever owned was a green anole.😂 She grew to over 6ft almost overnight and would rub her face on her cage until we let her out to free roam my house. I had to go to the closest university biology lab to get help with how to keep her, and we had mercury vapor bulbs and plant lights for uvb in several places in my house. She ate all my house plants and even ate my Christmas tree several years running. She was mean as hell too. She liked my husband, but hated me. It was a several year long nightmare. Don't ever get one

Being around my uncle, who started brewing reptile in the early 70's, and having raised and owned several reptiles myself. There is one thing I have noticed about them. Much like dogs something can happen (step on the tail, not giving them pets when they wanted, staring into their eyes too long, etc, etc, that will cause them to not trust you. Once you break an animals trust it is really hard to get it back. Humans (sometimes) forgive animals hold grudges.

Honestly, this could have been a Top 50! All the crocodilians. All the vipers. All the cobras. Most of the constrictors. Any egg eater. Picky snakes in general. Like, I just don't get it. When I think of good reptiles/reptile adjacent animals for beginners... I think gopher snakes & most of their sub-variants like bullsnakes if you want something with attitude, milk snakes, corn snakes, king snakes, bearded dragon, most geckos... I personally think hognose snakes & tegus are really cool... but I'm not sure they should be a good first reptile since hoggies can be picky eaters & tegus get big. I'd also recommend a new owner maybe adopt an older snake or gecko or beardie that's already been "tamed"... and is a proven eater. Goodness knows, the few places in the US that take in surrendered reptiles are absolutely overrun. I think RES can be fine, if you do your research! If you know what you're getting into & are fully aware, they aren't overly difficult... just space-consuming. Honestly, you almost need an indoor pond. They're kind of like the guinea pigs or bunnies of the non-furry pet world. They start out cute & small but you have to be prepared to sacrifice half your bedroom for their happiness... but if they're your special interest... happiest animal in the world.

Another great, informative video Adam. I would add if a new snake owner wants a BIG snake and is ready to give it proper husbendry, a south american boa constrictor would be a good choice. Boas generally have a calm temperament. They are strong hardy animals with good care and they eat well. Honesty if you have never owned a snake before I would start with something smaller, more manageable like a central american boa, ball python, or hognose.

As a kid we got a red earned slider and had no idea what to do with it. My dad basically had it in a fish tank with no land. Eventually he let it go in the pond outback. Which now as an adult I know just how wrong all that was but also it wasn't as easy to get educated about care and handling back then. Now there's alot fewer reasons why you shouldn't have done your research and know what's going on with the animal you want.

I’ve been keeping several species of pythons for a few years now, and I’ve resisted getting a retic even though I’ve wanted one…….until last weekend, lol. Got one at a show and she is absolutely amazing. Fortunately I have the space and she has a small percentage of super dwarf blood in her so hopefully she will stay at least a manageable size but if she gets huge I’ll build her a cool landscaped room in my shop and she will be the shop mascot.

Those who recommend Ball pythons as beginner snakes are most likely a breeder ie in it for the money. The anxiety when it goes on a hungerstrike (for potentially months) is enormous. The dehydration due to that and the fact that many snakes doesn't drink at all (my 8 year old Mcdowelli have only had water twice tmk and she is monitored by camera 24/7) The thing that their maintenance regarding humidity and temperature are also very critical. All snakes are nippy when young and that is why the Morelias have a bad rep. They don't nip more than Balls when young and mine has only struck 3 times over the years and that was within the first 8 months. They are much more hardy than Balls, eat all the time and are very curious snakes. The fact they are diurnal also combined with curious enables you to see them out and about most of the time. Some species only get 5-6 foot (same as Balls) but others might get 14-15. They are slender so they are still manageable at that size @1Softkiss even without being 2 people as recommended for most Boas and Anacondas. Sorry for rambling but Morelia needs more positive pr from people who has experience with them over time.

I've never owned a snake, but I'm 62, and little bites won't bother me. I can only have one animal companion, per the apartment I live in - and - largely because of All Canadian Reptile Girl, I've fallen in love with the Macklott's python. I've applied for SSI, and won't get any animal unless it comes in, so I'll have the money. I can manage enough space for a 4x4x2, or even a 6x4x2, and I know how expensive that is. In my particular circumstances, would you still say don't get a Macklott's?

I think if you get tons of information and speak to people who own them, they might be the right species for you :) but don't forget about the point of age! Pythons can easily get 15-20 years old. What happens with the animal, if you are not able to care for it anymore? I really hope you ccan get a snake you want and will love! :)

I absolutely love my Retic he's almost 4 months old and he's a Golden child tiger 50% het albino, he's so easy to handle and easy to get along with, the whole time I've had him he hasn't struck at me at all not even for a food response, and when i do feed him he doesn't strike at it as hard as my ball python did. I highly recommend someone get a retic BUT i wouldn't get it as my first, i would do TONSSS of research about them, because they do get big and some are very temperamental... but what i do recommend someone doing is getting a medium sized snake first like a ball python and learn how to take care of it properly, and if you know that you can afford more ,as in cage upgrading and buying more bedding every so often and buying bigger frozen-thawed animals then get you a retic, because they are absolutely amazing!!!!

Kidding, very good point about them not being good beginner snakes for someone that isn't prepared to do a very comprehensive handling education. I get people messaging me a lot with "She was so sweet when I got her as a baby, now she's 12ft long and hates me", mainly because they just lack the large constrictor experience. getting a red eared slider was a mistake. that was my first reptile (I was an adult) and soooo NOT a good idea. Tank size gets crazy, I was having to use a 200 gallon rated canister filter when the turtle was still small enough to be in a 40 breeder, none of the commercially available basking spots worked well for such a HUGE turtle. I ended up giving it to a rescue so it's happy in a big private pond now but oh man that was a bad call.

I also want to second the red-eared slider thing and add a thing too. Dont get them as pets for your kids if you aren't planning on taking care of them after that kid grows up and leaves home. My partner got one and then another in third grade, she turns 30 next year. Her parents threatened to kill them when she was in college because they were stinky because no one was cleaning up their small tank while she was gone. She had to emergency drive them out to my sister and I from Utah to California to live in our tiny studio. They live a /long/ time and need more water than you think they do. Plus, if you have two you always run the risk of them turning on each other to "run the other out of their territory". After 19 years together, ours did that and we had to emergency figure out what we were going to do. Thankfully we are in a good enough position now that we had space for another 300 gallon tank, but most people aren't. They can be veeerrry expensive even if we got lucky. I love them, but it still breaks my heart thinking about how long they lived in less than ideal situations because we couldn't afford to upgrade their homes. A lot of pet stores I feel like boost them as "starter" pets because they can be much cheaper to get than a different animal.
