Reverbs are two categories for me. I have a Holy Grail Neo as an “always on” reverb. I just love it for subtle reverb and it’s a great price for something that is more a tone feature than an “effect.” Then I usually use an Eventide Blackhole for more crazy reverbs. Two completely different purposes but equally important.
I agree with this. Spent a lot of time pedal swapping trying to get the full spectrum of reverb from one pedal that is easily switchable, and it makes so much more sense to have a couple on board to switch between two unique reverbs.
I recently got the Minim by Old Blood Noise. It's the best reverse reverb I've ever heard. I paired with the Tera Echo and the Russian Big Muff and got lost in Narnia.
Minim. it's just magic in a box. the only op-amp i have is Acorn's Mind Killer, so i'm going to try your recipe today: Mind Killer > Tera Echo > Minim. wish me luck!
Ahh the Strymon flint. One of the pedals I cannot live without. I agree that it’s one of the best reverb pedals ever made, even one of the best in general!
As an ambient guitarist, I love how you said the Vongon could get into ambient territory... then Brian Eno territory. Yes, we all know - Eno is on an entirely different level. Also, I could've sworn the first one you played was a Flint. I was convinced. Then I was bummed, because the Flint is such a killer pedal. Then... you showed off the Flint. Good man. Lastly, I know you have the Microcosm. Try running it in effects only mode and try out the reverb on that. It'll blow your mind at how good it sounds.
Anybody else out there who still has Robert Keeley’s “Aurora” digital reverb on their board? A vastly underrated piece of kit in my opinion, too quickly dismissed by too many ignorant internet trolls. Plate, Room & Hall modes, pre-delay function & analog dry through all on tap but no modulation bells or whistles! Does what it says on the tin - and does it beautifully! Mine’s going nowhere anytime soon.
Using an isolated power supply (i.e. not daisychained) the noise floor on a digital reverb should be close to zero! My HSS Strat -> Aurora -> clean Victory D40 is completely silent. So TLR TLR, if you heard a hissing or humming Aurora on your own or somebody else’s board, there was either some other problem with the board or else it was a duff pedal.
I thought I'd mention the Flint can change the order of the tremolo and reverb, and that the Flint has a secret shimmer mode if you crank the color and decay in the 80's reverb...
I have an amp where the spring reverb tank comes BEFORE the effects loop. At first, I thought it was odd and wasn't sure I liked it. Now, I love it! I can get the craziest sounds. I have a reverb pedal at the end of the chain as well. Double the verb!
Before I went 100% into Fractal Audio universe (from which I won’t be coming back), hands down my favorite reverb was the Neunaber Stereo Wet. That guy moved things forward in a huge way and still doing great things.
Never say never. I’m on my first board build since 2019 when I bought Axe FX. But there’s something about two amps and a pedalboard that hits a different spot for me live and in the room.
I picked up an Eventide Blackhole reverb a few months ago, after never really thinking I needed a reverb pedal (always just used the reverb on my amp, or in my DAW). I can say that it has changed my sound in a such a great way that I can't imagine not having it now.
Gamechanger Audio Light Pedal. Everything you like about the other Spring-based reverbs, and everything you never knew you wanted. Spring-induced drive, control of harmonic feedback, trem, delay, etc. Just an insanely amazing pedal and the most unique reverb I’ve played. Works very well with the Meris Enzo and Keeley Loomer as an Analog/Digital mix. It’s truly brilliant.
I found an MXR Reverb pedal at Arthur's Music Store in Indianapolis 3 years ago. 6 different reverb sounds, decay, blend, & tone knobs. Add a loop station or freeze on your board to make ambient pads!!! Icing on the cake
Favorite Reverbs of mine: GFI Specular tempus on spatium setting Earthquaker Dispatch master Old Blood noise sunlight freeze reverb Earthquaker Afterneath
I have a Strymon Flint pedal( my very first purchase from them actually) and a Strymon BlueSky as well. My first exposure to reverb was my Dad's guitar player, I was about 10 at the time. But the sound of the reverb in that blackface Deluxe Reverb forever burned that as the standard IMHO, into my brain. The post to buy the Flint was how well Strymon nailed the BFDR 'verb, IMO. Plus the tremolo is to die for as well. Love the channel Rhett. :)
The reverb pedal that stays with me always is the HOF Mini from TC. Even though there's only 1 knob, I can program it to do all sorts of stuff. It's currently set up like this: when the knob is fully counter-clockwise, it's set to a 40ms predelay with no reverb - basically a thickener or doubler. As I turn the knob up it goes into slapback. At halfway up the predelay is at 0 and I have a 'normal' hall reverb. At fully clockwise, it's set to a lush ambient 'wire choir' setting with modulation. I put the biggest knob I could find on it, and I can move between these settings with my foot easily.
The Universal Audio Golden is my favorite reverb pedal of all time. While it doesn’t do the more ambient reverb tones, it excels at offering the absolute best emulations of spring, plate, and hall reverbs I’ve ever heard. The source audio ventris is also worth a look, as it offers both stellar emulations of spring/plate/hall, along with some beautiful ambient reverb, such as the reverse and e-dome modes.
I gotta vouch for the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Procession. That’s an amazing pedal and I can’t imagine using anything else with the inspiration it pulls out of me. It has some truly amazing sounds, the speed knobs set to minimum values freezes the movement of it’s built in effect , and with a flanger, sci-fi filter and tremolo, being able to freeze a texture mid-woosh is nothing short of incredible and makes the sonic possibilities absolutely endless. Hold button for reverb freeze, a kill-dry mix knob, it really does cover a ton of ground even if compared to all the pedals of this video combined.
I agree completely with your comment about pre-delay. My Fender Marine Layer has it, too, along with very effective controls for damping and filtering.
"Final Cut" is one of my favorite Floyd albums. That last pedal was something else. I use a Mosky Audio Spring Reverb Pedal. I like it a lot, a very clean reverb sound. I use it mostly if I'm playing live acoustic through a PA
Coming right after The Wall was tough for any album, but I've dug The Final Cut since I was young. Now 53. There are some great songs on there. Some filler too, but that's with any album.
Is the JHS series 3 analog or digital? Hard to tell sometimes, since I am listening through small computer speakers, not actual high quality audiophile speakers. The Vongon page is not there. Are they in business anymore? Can you post a video of the best analog reverbs, delays, and also a video of the best digital ones? Trying to see how much tonal difference there is anymore between analog and digital, so which is better to play using classic Fender and Marshall tube amps?
Great stuff! I am currently using a VintaverB by Donner. For $89 it gives a ton of options. A great way to start before you commit to a more expensive reverb pedal. I could call this my if I could only have1 reverb pedal, this could be it!
I find alot of reverb pedals dont sound great if u play with alot of distortion. Two that do sound good for me with distortion is the Holy Grail (I like the older ones) and the Boss Digital Reverb. These are more subtle plate style verbs.
Great picks…again, super happy you found Recovery Effects-I’ve always loved everything I’ve owned of theirs. I also am a big Caroline fan; the somersault is tied for my favorite current chorus (with the Solidgoldfx NU-33). For reverbs, specifically the hall, give the Native Audio Ghost Ridge a go, Mike makes amazing pedals as well (his delay and phaser are excellent as well). Anyways my friend, per usual you’ve knocked it outta the park with these sounds. All my love to you & the family.
Way to go Rhett! The Flint is my always on pedal (70s /80s settings). Although, I usually mix or layer it with my amps spring reverb. As good as the reverbs are in the HX Stomp I rarely use them. Initially I bought the Flint for the Tremelo. Was I surprised whenI heard the reverb.
Strymon Flint has replaced my Ventris Dual Reverb as my primary in my rig, which is kind of nuts. Just has such a natural sound and still very versatile. (Or you can stack them together like I do for wettt ambient drippp). Also, you can slow the harmonic tremolo all the way down and decrease the intensity to about 20% and it acts kind of like a compression/saturation/sweetener/boost? Hard to describe, just makes your guitar sound better, especially single coil. I've started leaving the trem side always on.
I got the OBNE Procession a couple weeks ago on a bit of a lark. I don’t think I’m their target market but after watching painfully pretentious demos I realized that tone and circuits don’t make hipster judgements and there’s a lot in the pedal I like. Tremelo option is very good.
Excellent very useful video- sound quality is terrific, the guitar playing is awesome, and the “demos” are to the point- appreciate them all- Vongon was an eye opener Keeley caverns is very useful for “ regular” reverb and delay use Thanks
I have a Strymon Blue Sky in my chain that I'm pretty happy with. I most recently picked up a Beautiful Noise Effects 'When the Sun Explodes' (boost/ reverb echo) that is pretty sweet; and the EHX Canyons is a solid pedal, too. Looks like I may have a small shopping list with your list, Rhett. 😜 Good video- thank you 🙏
Almost a crime against humanity that you didn’t show off the Flints 70s plate or especially the 80s hall with near infinite decay. One of the only pedals I own two of. It’s just perfect.
Very cool pedals and video. I noticed your shirt. The Final Cut is such a brilliant, underrated album. I love it, but it's so relentlessly depressing that I can sometimes find it a difficult listen.
Okay the flint is pretty cool! I just picked up a blue sky out of necessity since my amp doesn’t have any on board reverb and oh wow! Everything from subtle spring reverb to awesome ambient swells that have that electric organ feel
My go to reverb as of late has definitely been the Walrus Audio Slö. I mostly use it for the dreamy ambient textures, but I’ve also been experimenting with it coupled with fuzz to produce some killer early 90s shoegaze tones.
Same here. Moist versatile and straightforward reverb pedal I've ever used. A perfect plate reverb (my fav). A perfect spring. Amazing hall reverb too, which I don't usually like. And love love the enclosure and the quality of construction. This things a freaking tank!
I use the One Control, Prussian Blue. Very small foot print (mini pedal that carries a 9V battery) and great sounds, without being too deep or experimental.
It's so simple and as much as I love the UA Golden, the Prussian blue did one thing perfectly. It was all the best parts of a hall and a spring reverb put together. Wish I had another one. Everyone who heard it loved it too.
Great show Rhett, I loved all of them, I like the Flint the best. Check out: JHS Kodiak trem and Echorec tape delay pedals. Also, on my vintage 1964 Princeton reverb amp I put in a low mu tube and a resistor into the Reverb circuit. Allows using the knob more.....sweet stuf
You should try the GFI systems Skylar. That thing sounds incredible in kinda like something between the boss rv6 and rv500. Cool sounding pedal with a simple yet very diverse set of sounds.
You get a like for the Eno plug, nice,Eno's guitar on Apollo ,I think there was a couple tracks, silver morning was one,his tone un believable ,if you know what he used I'd be glad to hear, sounds Fendery but...anyway the Walrus slo I just picked up is very cool guitar and keys(excells on a synth) Is alot like the meteore ,think you'd dig it,Thanks eh!
I’m just starting my pedal journey, but knowing myself and my taste in the past my pedal collection will one day be 50% reverb, 50% literally everything else
Maybe you jest but my stompbox rig is currently 6 fuzz/OD/distortions going to 4 reverbs/delays, with a small multi fx in the middle for amp modelling (and some mod stuff if it's really needed). I just don't care for anything else enough to spend money on it
Electro Harmonix Oceans 12 is my staple reverb. I'm considering adding a Neunaber Immerse to my rig. I've never had the chance to use an Immerse, but after hearing it's versatility as used by Vaudlow (especially songs like Blue Desolate or Mend), I know what to do with it.
Rick doesn’t talk about gear. I think this could be your niche. Talk about the mono pedal holder as well for people who don’t know anything about pedals or pedal gear. Nice Vid 😍
