5 scroll saw projects. Scroll saw projects that sell, is a demonstration and explanation of how to make 5 different scroll saw projects that have sold well over the years here at our family workshop.
These scroll saw projects can be made in a basic way and be great as scroll saw projects for beginners. Alternatively, you can include the handcarving skills and they are great projects for the wood worker with more advanced wood working skills.
Many of the processes used for these scroll saw projects are ideal for scroll saw beginners but can be used by the more advanced scroll saw user too.
The 5 scroll saw projects demonstrated are as follows:
1. A scroll sawed Rhino and Owl book end.
2. A scroll sawed key shaped key rack.
3. A scroll sawed pig shaped money box.
4. A scroll sawed sea horse hanger (coat or tea tower hook)
5. A scroll saw mouse door stop.
All of these scroll saw patterns can be adapted to suit your own skills and ability. Equally, alternative designs can be used for these scroll saw projects. For example, a football shaped money box or a car shaped key rack. The explanation and demonstration of these scroll saw projects can be used as a basis for your own scroll saw project but you can adapt the design according to your own needs.

Nice video. Thanks for posting! As i have not been able to find carbon paper, i put painters tape on the wood and then glue the pattern to the tape. Removes easily by just pulling off the tape and little to no residue left behind.

Nice technique Jim. We have started to use glue in more recent times. We add glue to the back of the paper template too. We use PVA glue so it takes a while to dry. If I am short on time I use carbon paper so I can get on the scroll saw straight away. Great to hear from you, hope all is well, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

Awesome video. It is very interesting to see how you put on the detail. I have not seen this before. I am very interested in doing this. it will make a big difference to my projects. I am a beginner and only got a scroll saw a month ago, and have cut out quite a few things, but they are as you can imagine FLAT!! As I did not know how to put on the details. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing.

@@DailovespoonsThomas WOW this is just awesome. Thank you so much. I traced some pictures and used as patterns until I am confident enough to do a detailed project. I am still learning to cut perfectly. I have spent hours and hours cutting and still not perfect yet. But it will come. I use that craft spray on glue stuff, to stick the paper to the wood, and I think that makes the cutting sluggish, at times I cannot move the wood!!!!🤪!!!! But it is so much fun. when I have finished cutting what I had planned out, I am always wanting to do more and more!! Thank you for your detailed videos and advice, and especially for this link to projects, I really appreciate it.

Hi Frank, great to hear from you. We do indeed concentrate most of our projects on combining the skills of scroll sawing and wood carving together. However, we have also done many demonstrations where we add the details using the scroll saw. Techniques like line art are great for replicating the details added by handcarving on a scroll saw. Thanks for your feedback and supporting our RU-vid channel. Let us know if you have any questions, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

@@kenn1936 brilliant, delighted to hear that you are enjoying the scroll saw, it is such a great machine to work with and you can make so many different things. If the cutting is slow it might be the blade you are using? I use a Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blade works well for cutting out hardwood. It has 8 teeth per inch so it has a pretty decent feed speed.

Great video I see you use carbon paper I started scrolling 40 plus years ago never knew anything but using carbon paper transfer I see all the new scrollers making copies an spray gluing or putting tape down an gluing then pealing off sanding to remove residue I still prefer carbon paper just had to comment that the one thing I did was try to cut right on the line I see you cut right to the edge if do that I find myself drifting off a little my old habits are hard to get away from Thanks for all the great work you put in your videos

Hi Jerry, great to hear from you. Spot on we do tend to stick to the methods that have served us well. I was trying to think where I cut on the line or to the outside edge and it's interesting that until you pointed it out I probably couldn't have answered the question. Bit like riding a bike or driving a car, you develop a technique that works for you and stick to it. The same with the carbon paper, I still use that technique for a lot of my scroll sawing. I do use the glue technique too but I find it can spoil the standing belts when taking the paper off afterwards. Great to hear from you as always, hope you enjoyed the video. Hello Dai, I reckon I will go in for some of those Niqua blades no.9, (they look a lot "beefier" than the blades that I have which came with the saw), and also stop "jumping the gun", (thats how I am though). I could do some nice stuff with 1" Oak ( I am quite imaginitive-got allsorts of idea's in mind) and "walk before I run" aswell, get some of the thinner "Oak (converted in to firewood" scraps lol) out and get some practise in. You were thinking just along the same line as me though with a narrow bandsaw blade for external cutting and scroll saw for internal cuts but I think when I get my blades I will give it a good shot with the scroll saw. I've spent enough money on various sizes of bandsaw blades already lol. (and all I've done is convert lots of good wood into scrap lol).

Hi! I love all the ideas, especially the door stopper. The hook is beautiful - I just can't figure out how you would hang things on it if it hangs flat against the wall?

Hi Enid. Great to hear from you glad you liked the video. The hook is attached to the wall with a simple triangle hoop so I doesn't hang tight or flat against the wall. Perfect for if someone wants something more decorative to hang a towel, coat, tea towel etc on. If you attached it tight to the wall, it would be useless. Hope that answers your question. @@DailovespoonsThomas I will do, I like your work and your preentation style. I will get some carbon paper aswell, because from the couple of attempts I did on bandsaw (before I bust my narrow blade) I was printing on card then meticulously cutting out then drawing around the ensuing template but thats too laborious. I'm not gonna be doing that glued on/taped on method tho I do know.

Hi, great to hear from you. Yes you can cut Plywood with a scroll saw. Just need to select a suitable blade for the job and it will cut Plywood really well. The scroll saw is really versatile, it can cut all sorts of materials from hard and soft wood, to MDF, to plastic and metal. Just need to have a suitable blade for the job. If you need information on blades we have several videos on the channel that focus on scroll saw blades. Hello Dai, thanks for your reply, I was looking at Niqua blades on Sunday and was just about to order them until I saw the "standard" postal delivery (duration estimate ) (not paying extra - I'm a Yorkshireman tha' knows Lol) and my impatience got the better of me and I ordered some Proxxon blades from a place nearer but they aint come yet anyway, I might as well have got the Niqua, they were only a few quid aswell. I think I was going to get 9's and 11's (or 12's).
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 3 года назад
Sounds similar to my thoughts on it. Never used Prooxxon blades before. I'd be interested to know how you get on with them. Always good to get feedback on different blades, equipment, blade makers etc. I have used Pegas number 9 reverse tooth blades recently. My thoughts on those were, they were stronger than the Niqua ones but the Niqua blades gave a finer finish. The Pegas blades might handle thicker wood well.

Hello Dai, I like your Rhino and Owl, I would like to get into that type of thing. I have recently bought a decent used scroll saw (I've not had one before, never even touched one till Tuesday last week), I did a quick test cut to see what it could do and it went through Oak nearly 2" thick no problem but that was just in a straight line and when I've had another effort to actually follow a line seemed like no chance and a case of "well thats summat ELSE to get shut of " (lol). So I was wondering what blade were you using because thats the sort of thickness I will be making things from. (I have lots of White Oak doing nothing so I am not going to be spending money on soft wood plus I dont want to be doing thin work either). I like the carving aspect aswell, I would like to be able to do that. I was tempted to get another 3/16" blade for my bandsaw, trouble is snap a blade and thats 16 quid down the drain plus cant do internal cuts.
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 3 года назад
Hi, great to hear from you. 2" Oak will need a strong scroll saw blade to deal with it. We use Niqua number 9 reverse tooth blade. Most of what we are cutting is between 1/2" and and 1" thick and those blades do a lovely job on it. 2" Oak would likely need a stronger blade again. So a higher number/thicker blade. I like the reverse tooth blades because it gives a cleaner finish on the top and bottom of the wood. We use a lot of Oak and the Niqua blades cut it well. The Oak we use is just over 1/2" thick. If it fits with your projects, the combination of Niqua number 9 blade and 1/2" Oak works well for us. On 2" project we would usually use the band saw, the down side is the sanding required afterwards because of the saw mark, a problem you don't have in the same way with the scroll saw. If you are doing thicker wood projects you could try doing the external cuts on the bandsaw and scroll saw the internal cuts. Thank you again for getting in touch. Hope the video was useful. Let me know if you have any questions. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop 👍👍

Hi Peter, great to hear from you. We got alot of wood from old unwanted furniture and places like double glazing companies that are putting in plastic windows They are often removing hardwood and don't want it, so they either burn it or put it in a skip. We can use it so it's better for everyone. We also have local tree surgeons bring us in wood and have our own tree planting project on site at the workshop. From time to time people bring wood into the workshop too. It's just as well at the moment because wood has become so much more expensive. If we were buying it we would need to put our prices up alot. Thanks again for getting in touch and supporting our RU-vid channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

Hi Tony, great to hear from you. Would love to add a link to a place to buy the hand tools but most of the ones we use are vintage wood carving gouges and the companies haven't existed for 100 years or so. I can give the names for you they are Addis gouges made in London or Sheffield and Herring Bros gouges made in London. If you put in a search of 'vintage wood carving chisels' on eBay you might find some for sale from time to time. Failing that try these links for modern gouges that are good quality. Robert Sorby: www.robert-sorby.co.uk/ Ashley Iles: www.ashleyiles.co.uk/ Henry Taylor: henrytaylortools.co.uk/ All of the above make decent wood carving gouges but for us the vintage ones are the best. Hi Yvonne, thanks for getting in touch. You will have to adapt according to your machine. If you can only use pinned blades with your machine you will have to make the holes big enough to feed the blade. Where do you buy your wood?
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 3 года назад
Hi, great to hear from you. We mainly source our wood from recycling and reclaiming it. Often we can get this for little or no money at all. Old unwanted furniture, fixtures and fittings are a great source of wood. We have links with our local tree surgeon so that is another way to source the wood we use. We have a tree planting project on site so that is another way we can get our wood for wood carving. We have local timber stores too. For example timber man in Carmarthen, Axminster tools in Cardiff and a few other independent sellers here in Pembrokeshire. Basically we try to keep actual buying of timber to a minimum. Hope that helps and gives some ideas for sourcing wood for wood work projects. Thank you again for your question, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍
