I think my issue with type of videos like these and the RU-vid “fashion guru” videos from people like Ashley and Teachingmensfashion is that is inspires no originality and only makes people dress one way while simultaneously making other people who don’t dress that way feel bad. There’s nothing wrong with a “uniform” to say, in this community it’s often good year welted boots, selvedge denim, and a white tee, but we shouldn’t put others down who don’t follow that same look. We can educate people without putting them down.

True. But once you take interest in dialing in your personal style or which “tribe” for lack of a better term, be prepared to take criticism of all kinds. Like it or not, harsh criticism will help you decide if you realize if you are comfortable or natural in a particular style. It’s usually the mid tier level that are critiqued most severely. They know enough and are aware but have not mastered or overlooked some of the basic details of fit, complimenting pattern matching/ color and subtlety.

I think a lot of these hated shoes can be pulled off with the right outfit like Birkenstocks with shorts and a tee on a hot summer day. Jordans and other athletic footwear are par for the course if you are dressing for a street wear aesthetic.

@@CeeAreDee I'd go so far as to say that though that may be the question you are answering here that the question itself should not matter nor perhaps be entertained as a valid question. Whether or not ladies "like" clothing has no more bearing than whether or not men "like" an article of clothing women wear. And I'd go so far as to say that the standard response from women regarding unasked for commentary about what men like them to wear is utter disdain. Wear what makes you happy and comfortable and if women don't like it they don't have to wear it.

Yeah, Ashley is kinda sketchy for reasons I’m aware of behind the scenes. I also don’t agree with her whole take that a man over 40 shouldn’t wear leather jackets. That being said, she sometimes hits the nail on the head with her takes. Even a broken clock is right twice a day though…

Agree with her on this. She's an absolute expert and I respect that, while at the same time ignoring virtually all her advice on how to dress the same as everyone else in navy, grey and white neat casual clothes (she'd be great for teaching someone style-less to improve themselves and immediately look ten times better but for those of us past that point she'd be a destroyer of individuality). Agreed with you too, with one exception. Fisherman's sandals, without socks, worn with shorts = classic and one of the best choices for hot weather and beaches

The shoes women hate line up pretty well with the shoes I hate. Not sure how most people feel about tassel loafers though. I only own two pair but they are among my favourite shoes. My bf and my mom (two people whose verdict I trust) find they look " funny". :D

Sandals are definitely something has to be considered in context. I live in a hot desert, and men here wear them on the regular. Of all my shoes, I get the most compliments from women on my Birkenstock Arizona's. Also, if you are a man and you wear a quality well put together shoe that you enjoy, fits well, and gets the job done. Don't let someone tell you what not to wear. Better to wear a quality square toe than an overpriced cheap quality good looking shoe any day of the week. Men's fashion has always been function over form, that's why it's so timeless for us.

This is a nice video but I am sorry. When living in a country with 34+ Celsius degrees during summer you can't wear long pants and denim shirt without being a filthy sweat stain all day. We can't always move from one air conditioner to the other.

I tend to agree with Ashley on a lot of what she says and she generally has very good advice most of the time. Especially when it comes to how clothes should fit but I feel like some of her outfits she puts together, while great can be a little boring or formulaic and tend to lack any individual creativity.

Yeah. It’s a bit Outfitery. That’s a EU personal shopping service don’t know if you have that where you’re from. But anyway. Folk tend to look a bit generic when shopping or being shopped for there. That being said, most guys go look better for it and can serve as a basic building block into menswear.

I agree that sandals of any type have no place on a man except perhaps on the beach or pool. Birkenstocks are disgusting, period! Sneakers, with the exception of van style or vintage NB style or chucks are just plain bad taste when worn outside of the sporting context. Boat shoes are fine on the beach or on a sail boat. Driving shoes are the perfect summer “loafer” and exude casual sophistication.

Flip flops have their place. If you live in an extremely hot location or that’s just the fashion trend/style there, you can get away with wearing flip flops. For example, if you live in Hawaii or Phoenix, flip flops are acceptable. Sure, I wouldn’t wear them in NYC or Seattle or DC. Also, if you’re dressing for women, you’ve got bigger problems.

I've never gotten compliments on boots I've owned, gone with very typical styles like the moc toe etc, while I've gotten loads of compliments on SB Dunks and my plum Dunks from the ugly duckling pack so I think her take on sneakers is pretty out of touch now

Boat shoes are designed to be worn on boats. The white soles, by design are non marking in order to protect the boat. They are practical, and serve a purpose. They make no sense as dress shoes unless you are in a coastal environment and have or had plans to go on a boat.

History is full of examples of people appropriating clothing or shoes for fashion (usually by posers who want to be something they’re not) and not for their intended purposes. And btw, how boring would this world be if we all dressed the same, drove the same cars, had the same phones, etc.

She's terrible, and square toed cowboy boots are great. You have to have a certain look to pull them off, and it's not exactly what's being presented on this great channel. I wear my Double H (made in PA) boots with my Brave Star True Straight Cone Mills jeans, my Naked & Famous gray Weird Guys, my Triple Aught Design PD Intercept jeans, among others. You can dress them up or down depending on the style of leather and how beat up they are. My Double H's are beat to shit because I wear them everywhere and doing everything. My black Rujo caiman boots are still shiny and gorgeous and look great in a suit. THAT BEING SAID, I agree with most of the rest of this video. Especially the chunky basketball sneakers. I never wear loafers period because I'm not built for them, so I have no opinion on those.

I'll be honest I love this channel, but I feel I'm in the wrong target audience. I'm in my early 20s, and I think some of these are fine. However, none of these are my style, and I wouldn't wear them. Every type of footwear includes tasteful ones and not so tasteful. Also, the right shoe for the suitable activity seems to be moving backwards in 2022. So why gatekeep what footwear you must wear for only certain activities? Docs, and Birks fall under classics, along with the chucks and penny loafers. Ashley Weston might have some of the worst videos I've ever viewed about style.

Docs are not made well. Converse fall under classics too, but the quality is extremely lacking. Being 21 I agree a lot of these things would generally not be in my rotation (ahem, square toed dress shoes) but I do think there is something to be said about not buying a brand just because they’re popular and not by quality.

The 2 people you featured in this video are kinda snobby. They have no understanding of context and culture when it comes to footwear. I must also disagree with you on the slippers/slides thing. I live in Hawaii and if you come to the beach wearing shoes people will laugh at you. Or if you wear red wings and you're not a construction worker people will look at you funny. Lastly there are SO MANY shoes that are as good or better than chucks. Nike blazers, Air Jordan 1s, 3s, and 4s. Again culture and context. Sneakers and Jordans specifically are very relevant and damn near essential to men's fashion today.
