Here are the signs it time to clarify and deep condition your hair! As someone who's hair is prone to build up because it is low porosity, I find that I need to really pay attention to clarifying my hair regularly. And due to the drying and stripping nature of clarifying, deep conditioning after clarifying is essential (even though I am prone to over moisturized hair).

My biggest struggle is understanding what my hair looks and feels like when it's balanced and totally healthy. I don't think I've even gotten there yet.

Yeah, that is definitely tricky! It took me almost a year before I really felt like I had a grasp on that.

I started the CGM in April and only in the past 2 months have I really felt as though my hair looks the healthiest it ever has. It takes time but it is so worth it!

Do you only clarify and deep condition when you notice these five signs in your hair or do you routinely clarify and deep-condition? If so, how often would you say you clarify?
@kendralynn2490
@kendralynn2490 2 года назад
@@MrWlsgn4u I clarify and deep condition once every month or 2, since I frequently go product free. I'm just trying to understand my hair. I experience some of these 5 signs one a pretty consistent basis. There is precious damage that I haven't cut off yet, so I'm trying to balance my hair out to see what it's supposed to actually look & feel like.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm only 2 months in to the CGM and due to having frizz pretty often I'm never quite sure when to clarify, so this really helped. Your videos are so helpful in that you show us SPECIFICALLY what we are looking for and then show us the fix and how it turned out. LOVE your videos! Also, glad to see that you have a little more energy today and that you're perhaps feeling a little better in the home stretch of your pregnancy (at least you seem to be) Thank you Courtney for all you do.

I bought the Innate life problematic scalp treatment solely at your recommendation and it's just magic in a jar. I love it so much, I recently bought more for my seborrhoeic dermatitis-inflicted scalp. Thank you, Courtney!

Timely video! Just before watching I did the clarifying routine & decided to go product free and diffuse. I got better curl today than I’ve seen all month!! Yeah it likely won’t last but it was certainly a time-saver to skip the whole styling routine

I started my wavy curly journey shortly before the new year. I always thought my hair was straight since it dries straight (now hold on!), but it gets so frizzy. I was also using that Pantene crap for God knows how long until sometime in 2020 (that's the only brand my mom uses for shampoo and conditioner). I had my hair permed twice, and neither one lasted for nothing, and since I dyed it numerous times (with BOX DYE) I found myself frustrated when I wasn't getting results right away. I LIVE FOR deep conditioner and leave in conditioner. I'm a new subscriber and have found your videos very educational, humorous, and helpful. I am happy for you and hope your baby girl has a wonderful life and may God bless you and your family!

The bounce curl detox mask is great for clarifying, especially if you get an itchy scalp! Plus it helps remove hard water! Mo has a great how-to video on different ways to use it & I like to combine a couple of them. I apply some to my scalp before I jump in the shower, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, and then once I'm in the shower I add some to the lengths of my (wet) hair, leave it for a few more minutes, and then follow up with their gentle clarifying shampoo, or a different clarifying shampoo. Even though their clarifying shampoo is more gentle than most, I find that when used in conjunction with the detox mask, it works beautifully! I usually do this whole rigamarole every other time I clarify. I have a somewhat dry scalp though, and I find this dries it out a bit, so I like to follow it up with the curl smith hydrating soothing mask (I don't think that's the right name lol. The jar with the blue label) since it can go on the scalp. Sometimes I use that on my scalp only and a different DC on my hair, like the bounce curl ayurvedic one that's also good for hard water. Just a thought for anyone looking for help clarifying with dry scalp!

Does the ion hard water shampoo you recommend also clarify from product buildup? I.e. when do you use neutrogena clarifier and when do you use the ion one? Also- do either one work as the “first step” in the curly hair journey?

I was clarifying once a month, then I did MyManeBio. Apparently, that wasn't NEARLY good enough. I've gone to clarifying every other week now and I've noticed such a HUGE difference in how much healthier my hair is: feel, shine, hold, everything.

Same! My Mane Bio was a game changer. Recently, I started struggling with my hair again, went back to my report from two years ago, and... There it was. I need protein on my lower third AND I need to clarify once every week or two. Now, it's finally soft and shiny again! Hopefully it'll start curling again soon too.

Because I have high porosity hair it lacks hydration and always looks frizzy after I do the clarifying.... It's also extremely thick and naturally curly and takes 2 and a half days to completely dry... I do use a diffuser

I get confused with the definition of stylers and presumed leave in conditioner fell into the "styler" category. Does curl cream fall into the styler category or the leave in category? I tend to use leave on or curl cream. Its summer here so im currently leaning towards leave in but on my treatment day i use cream. Would this be classed as being product free still? Ps: this video is very helpful. Ive been using malibu c undo goo on my clarify days and enjoying it.

Something I tried the last time I clarified and deep conditioned, I clarified (with Suave clarifying shampoo), then the kerotin mask in the little green tub (I wanted to try a kerotin product without purchasing the shampoo/ conditioner since the line is a little pricey) I let this soak for 30mins. And then I washed out the kerotin and let JesseCurl deep conditioner soak while I'm in the shower! It seemed like it worked well 😊 do you think this is a reasonable routine to have?

I am new to this. I clarified about 2 hours before you posted this video and I didn't realize I needed to deep conditioning. Should I clarify again my next wash day? I did squish to condish, apply leave in and the curl cream and gel. Guess I shouldn't have done those last steps either. Then I plopped for a while and air dried.

Courtney, how on earth does one continue curly girl method when products either give zero hold (or hold that doesn't last) or build up within two days? Whenever I start curly girl method, medium hold and hard hold gels and creams build up by the end of day 2 hair on me and everything else that is curly girl approved seems to not hold my waves beyond the first night post wash and then I physically have to fully rewet and restyle every single day.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 2 года назад
I have the same problem. My hair is very thick and full and (I think) low porosity, due to being fairly short (chin length) and never having been heat styled. I need hard hold gel, to get to 2c/3a, but while it looks great over the first day...my hair looks and feels matte and messy on the second day already. And it's barely wavy anymore. Third day, I absolutely need to wash. I'm so jealous of people, who can just 'refresh' their hair and wear it curly for several days in a row.
@journalersketcher
@journalersketcher 2 года назад
@@raraavis7782 This might be totally opposite of what anyone else would tell you, so feel free to ignore it. I would honestly stop using hard hold gels and switch to medium hold gels. You're saying you need hard hold gel to get to 2c/3a, which to me suggests that treated wavy/curly your hair is less wavy than that. In this case, I think you need to stop forcing your hair to be something it's not. This has been the case with me. With most hold products I can get my hair to be curlier than my natural 2a/2b, but it looks crappy (stringy/crunchy and that crunch does not scrunch out). With stronger leave-ins or with a serum applied on damp hair I am hoping my hair would dry in its natural 2a/2b waves but be able to hold those waves until the next wash day.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 2 года назад
@@journalersketcher You got a point there. If I don't do anything to my hair, it's barely even wavy. If I just lighty run a brush through it wet... it's basically smooth on top. Except at the neck, where it still fairly short and curls up like crazy, even if I don't want it to. It won't even stay put, if I blowdry it into submission. The slightest hint of moisture and it curls up again. But it just looks so messy unstyled. I tried gently blowdrying it for a while but the look doesn't really suit me very well and doesn't 'keep' for more than a day, either. And I don't want to use a flatiron, obviously. And letting it air dry (with or without product) makes me look very 'unkempt', because of the difference in structure between my top hair and my neck and also my current haircut, a layered, chin length bob. I just don't know, what to do. I tried so many hair length and styles over the years...from pixie to brastrap length to pixie and now to bob length... nothing really works for my hair type AND suits me. I just lovelovelove the way I look with more pronounced curls and lots of volume around the face. It's the first time in my life, I actually really like how I look, when I'm done styling my hair. I'm actually seriously considering getting a spiral perm in spring, when my hair is a little bit longer. My hair is super robust and healthy and I don't plan, to let it grow beyond shoulder length...so I should be able, to get away with it. But pssst, don't tell anyone I plan to 'cheat' 😉😂

I am having a real issue with product buildup. When I use the amount of product needed to get great results on wash day, my hair feels so dirty and weighed down the next day already, even when using so-called "lightweight" products. With less product, my hair feels clean for longer but my waves have hardly any definition or hold. Clarifying only helps for one or two washes. What to do?
@karissathatcher9206

I have had similar issues. It could be the ingredients in the products. I found that I was using too much of the products (including shampoo and conditioner). So, I've decreased how much I'm using, and I've seen an improvement. I hope this helps! Keep trying. :)

@Karissa Thatcher I'm not sure if you're the same at all, but when I started investigating curly hair care, I concentrated on moisture products because that's what everyone said to do, but my hair had lost most curl and what was there wouldn't last hours and got super fluffy. I have fine, med-low po hair. The biggest difference for me was protein. I started small and kept adding more. Decided to go for the gelatin treatment Courtney did in another video, and WOW! What a difference. I was scared to try because of all the stuff about protein overload, but I clearly needed it. My hair is curlier and smoother than it's ever been. Plus, the treluxe hi-def gel has been magic for me. The smell is way too strong, but it works so well I'll force myself to get used to it.
