I've had IBS for about 20 years, for me the problems surfaced after a year of extreme stress which led me to a depression and permanent sensitive stomach. For me personally I feel it's mostly a stress-related problem because I always "empty everything" if I eat too fast or is exposed to stress. I handle it by eating small portions and trying to keep my life free from stress. But it's a struggle, it's definitevly a life affecting disorder. A lot of planning before doing stuff etc, I bet most people here understand what I'm talking about.
I totally agree because I've noticed that before my symptoms started, I used to dwell on negative things that happened to me in my childhood. I think that by persisting on those thoughts, I've developed hypersensitivity in my nerves, so even a small negative thought can immediately trigger bowel flare-ups. However, when I calm down and have no racing thoughts, everything seems to be fine. I'm planning on conducting the test suggested from the Doc
I agree, my girlfriend of 35 years died, and the consequent stress is still omnipresent 18 months later, and now I have IBS, no diarrhea or constipation but constant achy pain the lower abdomen--CT scans and colonoscopy show nothing is wrong lol
Thanks for saying that. I've always had minor problems with my gut and periodically bloat up, doctors tell me I'm fat lose some weight, yet I'm not fat my body returns to normal size so I know. I worked in a physical job and eat healthy and monitor my sugar intake, I gave up drinking alcohol 20 years ago. Recently at retirement age I decided to move from my comfortable life to an asian country that I'd spent a lot of time in over the years. I was fine up until about 3 weeks out from leaving. There was massive stress getting my home ready to rent, moving out of it, renting it to an unknown stranger, selling most of my things. Then there was leaving my friends, leaving a life I loved, I was comfortable but I also loved where I was going. Then I started questioning it thinking I was making a mistake. On top of this I'd been running a stressful business I had decided to end because of stress. So I arrive in the new country and about 3 weeks in I notice blood in my stools so I went to a doctor. I had recently had a colonoscopy and an ultra scan and I was normal. The doctor said no worries its just damage to intestine lining, he gave me medication and immediately it cleared up. But then I started getting pains in my intestines which would be mild but annoying and be anywhere from my chest down to my bowels, it wasn't localised. After a few weeks it developed to a point I feel full when I eat, I feel like my bowels are still full after going to the toilet. During the day I can feel like I need to go to the toilet yet I can't then it just disappears. The doctor did a stool test and found I had no bacteria problem or blood in my stool. He said I have IBS. I have put this down to over stressing retiring and leaving my country. The doctor agreed. My condition has improved but is still there 3 months in. What this video says about the thin intestine lining makes sense with what the doctors said. Now reading about others with stress problems makes sense also. I've always worried, over think things and stress out.
Everything you described about your patient is me to a T. I am 22 and this is my 10th year with IBS. I have avoided my doctor as they just proscribe me antidepressants which I personally do not believe in. I’m only 2 min into your video and I’m sitting here crying because I’ve never related to someone so much.. I’m not crazy, and I’m not alone. Thank you for your video.
The biggest hurdle which only IBS patients has to endure is that, 1. Not many doctors would listen, nor they think with a strategy. 2. Everytime you see a new doctor, it's like completely redoing your diagnosis from the scratch. 3. If you stick with a single doctor you wouldn't know for sure if the treatment is working as optimal. 4. Some doctors assume this as psychological problem. 5. Colonoscopy is the defacto method to check for any single concern. Like sticking a rod into a rubber toy. 6. You never know if there will be a rupture of colon during a colonoscopy. 7. Not every doctor is as educated or experienced. 8. Not many countries has best equipment. 9. Some say it's caused due to historical drug reaction, hereditary, appendix surgery etc. 10. Not many vaccine trails consider for IBS patients. Example: Covid-19 Vaccine has no drug study on this group.. and it's officially stated. 11. At the end you end up becoming your own researcher, nurse, doctor, diet expert etc.
Thank you i knew i wasn't crazy my doctor did a colonoscopy and said i have high stomach acid and give me medication i took then for a year and my stomach is still messed up i tried to tell him i feel like its something do with my digestive track and this is before i knew about ibs he kept shuting me down so i just got up and left and did my own research and found this
@@ashantataylor4026you’re going to have to double check that, most people have low stomach acid and the more older you become your stomach start to produce higher acid levels, most doctors just want to do their “work” but not actually going to the root of the issues,I went through a bunch of tests including endoscopy and everything came back normal and every time I talk to the doctor he literally tells me I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Thanks God I’ve been getting better, drinking lemon water, using ACV in my meals and the heartburn, bloating and acid reflux is gone, expect I have from time to time constipation
Any doctor that tells you this is stupid and needs to stop practicing. Odds are most doctors who say this are older as well. I'm not saying all older doctors say this, but you're more than likely going to get an older one to make this kind of comment than a younger one. There certainly are mental factors that go into how IBS affects you and when/how it is triggered, but the idea that it's all in your head is absurd. I don't care what their resume and education is, any doctor who says that is not intelligent.
Look for Rachel Greene's UTube videos. She healed her IBS with Ketone supplements. Or look online at a product called IBSolution. Read the testimonials on its website - people are saying it ended all their IBS symptoms.
My daughter has IBS, she went on a Fodmap diet and 95% of her symptoms stopped. Primary causes were consuming onions and garlic. She recently discovered She has issues with pasteurized cheeses, but not cheese that has been aged for 60 days. Most Cabot cheeses are aged and imported cheeses are aged. Most American made cheese is pasteurized and not aged, even though the cheese may appear similar to aged cheese, such as cheddar cheese.
Was she mostly constipated? I only go once a week and diarrhea when I drink tea that helps me go or other medications that helps me go but then I only pass gas😒
The Fodmap diet can be found on the internet, eliminate onion and garlic from your diet. Also you should be gluten free, lactose free or dairy free, no chemicals in your diet, no artificial sugars. Clean eating should be your goal, nothing artificial, no package foods, read food labels.

@Waeve I don't believe that drinking ketones will make anyone be in ketosis but somebody sure is fooled if they're trying to make people believe that. Or somebody is trying to fool people.
Thank God' all of these years I thought I was all alone with this horrible disease. My ibs came along at the age of 29, and I'm now 49years old. In recent weeks I've discovered that my symptoms have decreased a whole lot, once I added green leafy lettuce , lots of ruffage ( salads ). And' most of all apples, yes just simple red apples has given me much more time to make it the restroom when I have an ibs attack. Before I've had bowel accidents in my car, even years when I had to ride the bus, I'd be late for work, because I'd have to stop by a mc donalds or any where just to use the toilet. My doctor has prescribed metamucil for me, which works great only if you cut down and or, eliminate sugar and dairy from your diet. But' most of all romaine / green leafy lettuce and apples has worked wonders for me. Good luck to everyone and god bless!!
david banner its not disease it is syndrome which means if u cure ureself from it it will go back to the way it should be , now celiac is a disease because it permanently erodes u're intestine lining and u will never recover from the damage done! so thank god it is ibs and not celiac!
In majority of the cases, the damage done to the intestinal villi by Celiac is reversed once the patient starts a gluten-free diet. The intestinal lining goes back to normal once there is no gluten in the system. So Celiac would be a better alternative to IBS which has absolutely no legit cure or treatment.

I have Crohns Disease. I was diagnosed 17yrs ago (teens) I fully believe that you can heal through your gut in this particular situation. I follow a very clean, plant based, organic diet, and keep a food journal of things I might be more sensitive to. I increased my exercise routine & see a complete 180 in my overall health. I shared my views with my gastroenterologist, who has prescribed me some pretty heavy meds w/very harmful side effects, in which he feels I will always have to take because I have a “disease”. I have been told by him that he also knows how “my generation is when it comes to natural healing”. I do feel very blessed when it comes to my disease as I have only had flare ups when I first diagnosed & maybe small issues towards the ends of pregnancies that went away on their own. Thank you for sharing this video & I wondered if you could dive more into Crohns aspect of it more. Would love to hear your thoughts 🙏🏽🖤
Thank you so much! I've been struggling with ibs for only about 2 years now and it finally got to the point where i had absolutely no control. I'm a truck driver and having an episode on the road is THE WORST. I called my doctor and they didnt dismiss it but are having me try the diet reformation.
Thank you . I feel better already knowing there is a cure and it's not through my head. it totally stresses me out when someone tells me I'm stressed when I'm not.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. 2 years of horrible suffering. I am on it and will be sharing this with other sufferers of this terrible chronic disorder.
OMG, I feel hope for myself again. Today I had intense pain all over my body. I need to work is all I was thinking. I picked up my cell phone again and wow!!!!!!! I chose your Chanel. You have given me hope again. Thank you for taking the time out to share. Long story short. I suspected all you stated with my eating etc. I will schedule another visit with my Dr. and or my Gastrointestinal Dr. I pray they don't brush me off as being healthy. Because right now I am not healthy. I can't eat anything.....
odd, 11 years and no comments..... you are on to something with your list..... the other list of what you should be eating is missing. How are you today, some 11 years later, and what do you eat these days?
@@curiousbystander9193 Pretty wild that after 11 years a comment comes along. But of course that is a good thing because in my experience IBS is an insidious condition that is 100% treatable. Add to the avoid list kale, spinach and collards. The reason I haven't commented further is because my IBS is history. It's cured. No more meds or trips to the ER. An occasional bit of self inflicted indigestion still occurs but apparently my histamine levels are normal and the damage to my gut is no longer. It took several years to completely remit once I was able to kick the bad eating habits, particularly coffee. IBS sufferers must identify the foods that cause the pain, bloating and indigestion. Pills are not the answer. All other foods are okay. The important thing to remember is that pretty much any foods cause a problem when the gut is highly irritated and inflamed, when symptoms are acute. It's tough getting through that but it will happen if those foods can be identified and avoided.
Great doctor, hats of to you. This ibs caused me sinusitis. I learnt this after two years of strain in my nose. I did yoga, I stopped all medicines, I am cured now. If any body struggling with nose blockage, pls command yourself, I have no stress, repeat this words, and also start feeling that your stomach is stress or contraction free. Feel it , keep repeating untill your nose is unblocked, throw away all your stress producing worries , you will be fine soon.
I have been an IBS suffered for over 20 years. One thing I do know is if I become stressed at work I will suddenly have to run to the bathroom. I'm off work 3 to 4 days a month from this. I am now 65 and all I hear from Doctors is yes you have IBS. No course of action just acknowledgement. I decided to try to educate myself on my own and this was the first video I clicked on. Lastly it's nice to know I am not alone.
Assallammualaikum! Abrar I have recently exposed to IBS caz most of my symptoms are constant pain in abdomen bloating and gas and Constipation very often. Can you pls guide me in detail to get rid of this ibs.. It does relate to stress. I have been stressful though but now the pain I get everyday is unbearable. I'm not able to focus on daily life things.
I've been dealing with this for 7 years but what seems to be turning it around is treating it with a natural anti-fungal, oil of oregano, no sugar, no simple carbs like bread and pasta. Five days and my gut is no longer bubbling and I'm not running for the bathroom 15 times a day. Look for videos on Candida overgrowth to learn more. Good luck folks.
Good luck! Hope it works for you too! Just an extra note, I've been doing more reading and working on this issue and add fermented foods to your diet because they're loaded with the kind of good bacteria that your body needs. Sauerkraut, Kimchi and kefir. @@maciej_zieba
Doctor do you realize all that smiling was irritating to someone with IBS/IBD? My first six months of IBD at 25, I went down to 100 pounds. I "cured" myself eating marshmallows before and after every meal and at bedtime. Binding and soothing. I figured that out for myself. My doctor did nothing for me. It healed in two weeks and I was free of it for almost 15 years. It came back. Then, eight barium enemas later, and two sigmoidoscopies later, catscans, I was told I had to live with it. I did everything you said in this video on my own. I'm a bit of a nerd. Now in my late 70s I have marshmallows before and after every meal. Back where I started. No, I'm not fat. I never was. My point is check on that patient of yours and get back here 15 years from now and see how fine she is. It's chronic. God bless. I know you mean well but as you said, no two of us are alike. 🤷♀️
I'm 29. I got IBS when I was 22! Out of the bluemoon. It all started with fever + diarrhea. Ever since, my life has changed drmatically. I used to workout, eat 6 to 8 meals a day. Eat everything & anything. I lost all my muscles. I lost appetite. I never feel hungry, and always bloated & full. I spend so much time in the toilet. Its not constipation, yet it takes a very long time to evacuate, 40 to 60mints. Tired, sick & very down. done every single test. nothing helps..tried every medicine.
@@ZeeshanAhmed-os1lm I'm just like the OP, all tests come back normal yet I'm always bloated and unable to eat without getting horrible abdominal cramps and distention. I don't know what to do or who to go to for help, I'm only 97 lbs. . .
EXACTLY, going wheat and dairy free is ideal in curing IBS, because both wheat and dairy are types of food that cannot be digested effectively, so elimination is crucial for recovery!!
Suffering since 2 months.. recovering day by day... Last 3 days completely normal... What I followed is.. 1. Elimination gluten and Sugar 2. Gentle Yoga 3. Pranayam 4. 35 mins walk... Day by day I feel I am improving a little bit.. Dear IBS community, have you ever observed if we are in hurry or if we are supposed to complete any target in time may it be simple cooking or any simple task in time... Due to even simple worry our stomach contracts. And doesn't feel like relax stomach... We have to observe this very carefully,....I think this is the reason.. it starts feeling abnormal,.. For that meditation, stressfree no time bound commitment, slow and peaceful working style.. rhythmic pattern of breathing is very necessary to keep brain gut in sync.. I had this IBS 3 YEARS BACK resolved in 2 months then again 1 year back... Again resolved in 1 month and now since last 2 months... Reaolving slowly .. since last 3 days....❤
I’ve been suffering with IBS for so many years. I’m laying down right now unable to get up and walk around. For the last four months has been the worst. I’ve lost 18 pounds my hair is falling out and I can’t seem to find an answer. I have an appointment once again with my G.I. at the end of the month. Can’t wait to get this resolved. Do you eat fruit, fiber, drink water and take acidophilus? Stay away from too many beans and potatoes because they cause constipation. Also you may not be getting enough protein or thyroid conditions.
@@kimberlyhortz6471 I do eat quite a bit of fruit. But I have to look for a good probiotic. I did have a thyroid test done recently and it seems to be OK. Thanks for your feedback and I have been eating beans in the last week or so. So I’ll make sure I avoid them moving forward. Thank You!
I've had these symptoms for about 6 years now -- ever since my first colonoscopy. Throughout the past year or so, I've tried adding/removing various foods to my diet, without effect. Some days I will "go" once; other days, six or seven times. Sometimes it feels like I'm crapping battery acid, and then I can hardly walk when I'm finished. I'm so tired that I can easily sleep for 14 hours a day. I certainly wouldn't mind some kind of relief from this stupidity...
I've heard many doctors, and you have the best advice because you don't give a cure all. IBS is not treatable by one method because everyone's gut is different. Thank you for doing your research.
After 25+ year’s following my gallbladder surgery and still having problems, some similar diagnosis what I have faced. But I learned about my possible conditions more in this program more , than ever! Wow! What an eye opening amazing set of information! Thank you! I developed IBS when I was 28 years old. I am now 70 and it’s still with me. In my 30s, I went into great detail to my Doctor at the time about what was happening and he leaned in close to me patted me on my knee and said oh honey, it’s just the coffee you drink in the morning So I never told another doctor about it In other words, it’s all in your head
I’ve been suffering with IBS all my life! Please send me everything I need to help me to please. I’m 38 years old and feel like I always need a bathroom near by.
Can be triggered by many things, usually linked to stress though, hopefully there will be a cure one day but for now In going to start changing the way I see things by occupying myself when in cars on bussed or in small rooms (usually things which make me feel worse) occupying yourself by takin to the people your with, listening to music and having a bit of fresh air usually helps
Dear Dr. Mark Hyman thank you for your most informative detail explanation and recommendation. It is important to avoid such allergen foods as: dairy, gluten, yeast, soy, eggs & peanuts. Take fish oil, zinc, magnesium and fiber. Also, ask the doctor about temporary antibiotic RX treatment known as: Rifaximin (generic form: Flonoram) treatment for uninvited visitors to small bowel. Good info, TY!

What helped me was synbiotic, bile salts, & peppermint seed oil pills - all really helped with bloating Eggs are bad? I used to think IBS was a curse but it the long run it makes you SUPER healthy - I'm partly Vegan now
Actually what causes ibs is low bile flow. Which is caused due to less good fat. Fat produces bile. Bile produces enzymes. Which clear your intestine. My recommendation will be start consuming fat with cooked warm foods and take bile salts.
A tip, I thought I had ibs for so many years but my new family dr tested me for H pylori which I tested positive for. After treatment all my ibs symptoms have disappeared. Doesn’t hurt to ask your Dr.
I used to have IBS and it has 99% gone, just an occasional flare up. Aloe gel drink and a food allergy test were the two things that really helped me.I found I was intolerant to wheat, oats and dairy (which made up most of my diet!!). Really recommend both these routes if you haven't yet.
It doesn't give you diarrhea if you don't consume the green, stinky fluid that shows up right after cutting. It grows here in the tropics, i cut it from the bunch outside, let the slimy green stinky fluid drain into the grass. By the next day, slice it open, cut out the flesh, put it in a glass jar with fresh water and store in the fridge and sip it daily.

I said "Her pain and discomfort is not in her stomach, it's in her RLQ." She has a lot of gas and the pain comes and goes. She had a bowel resection about 5 years ago and things have been getting worse only recently. Amazingly enough, I did get her to give up dairy, halelujah! She's still eating eggs and gluten tho. I got diagnosed with IBS not too long ago. I completely understand. It's so frustrating when the doctors keep saying "eat more fibre" but it does no good. =( However I recently made some diet changes and it is helping me. Dairy, meat, strong spices and grains were making me constipated. So I am currently on a strict fruit and vegetable diet. I switched over to almond milk, I drink a glass of Metamucil every morning before breakfast and every night before bed. I also make sure I drink 6-8 glass of water everyday. There are some days I still have flare ups but honestly it is a big big improvement! One of my cousins is a pharmacist and suggested to take a probiotic. She said I am basically having an imbalance in my body and the probiotic puts a coating/lining around your stomach and helps you slowly eat normal food again. I haven't bought it yet but I am going to talk to y doctor about it. Remember everyone's bodies are different. Your body may be intolerant to different things as me.
Part 2: however, I do hope this can give you an idea of what to do and things that may help you. Wishing you all the best! I know it's dreadful and so painful. I went through nearly 6 months of gruelling tests and constipation almost every single day. It's so painful and embarrassing when going out to other people's houses or even doing something as simple as shopping.
Mine has been going on for 3 months now , I have stomach pain , constant anxiety / panic attacks , stress and discomfort in my stomach . Constipation and diarrhea . I’ve been to the hospital and took X-rays none could tell me what’s wrong other then I’m fine . I haven’t been tested for IBS which stresses me out more thinking I have another disease that can kill me
I have the right answer - on IBS because right now I was uffering from it - from my previous 5 months. 1st step - go to a gastrologist dr take the PPI kit (proton pump inhibitors) tablets for 14 to 21 days. 2nd step - daily drink 1 Enterogermina liquid bottle . 3rd step - before taking every meal - take one esobrint-d tablet in the morning half hour earlier before meal and in the evening also 1 tablet before meal .. 4th step - do not eat any type of junk food or dairy products.(strictly avoid that). 5th step - daily walk and run for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening .. (this one is compulsory). Your IBS problem will get cure - 100% - bcoz like this only I have cleared my ibs problem in just 6 months.😊
@@brandyjaques3479 - I am 90% cleared .. i Turned myself from non-vegetarian to vegetarian.. I have stopped all junk foods, oily foods ... Bcoz all this stuffs was triggering my bowel as irritation in my bowel . Smoking and drinking are the Worst for that... If you want to cure or you want to stay alive more than 50 years than you must have to take this decision as soon as possible - otherwise you know you can 100% will go towards ersosive gastritis cancer or colon cancer or something else..😊
@@brandyjaques3479 - my diarrhea and constipation has been stop since more than 6 months ... But still I have little bit problem with my gasses.. not so much gas but little bit
Ive just got an IBS diagnosis. I never had any problems in my 39 years until 6 months ago when I first started getting bad stomachs and bloating. The bad stomach usually lasts for about 6 or 7 hours amd comes on around 5 hours after my last meal of the day, so Im up all night. Its happening around 3 times per week and affecting my life badly. Ive been on medication for 2 weeks which isnt working. Doesn' t seem to matter what I eat, but im going through trial and error with food to see if I can figure out the triggers. I'm pretty sure artificial sweetner, sugar and caffeine are going to have to be no goes from now on. I get more hood days when I dont touch them. All these late nights in pain is getting exhausting.
Let me recommend you to a powerful spell caster expert who helps cure all kinds of sickness completely without delay,,,,, and I strongly believe he can help you too sweetheart 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Dear Dr. Hyman, I am currently on day 4 of your regiment and I feel wonderful. I am going thru the flu like symptoms of the detoxification process but other than that I am doing GREAT! I had my first firm bowel movement today, its been one year since I had a firm BM and even then it only lasted one day. I have remove all gluten, dairy(Milk and Cheese), refined sugars, and soy from my diet. My diet consists mostly of Quinoa, Salads of all varieties, oil and red wine vinegar only as dressings.
He gav the most comprehensive explanation I've ever heard! I will now b armed w knowledge when I go 2 the dr. I hav been frustrated beyond belief w the gastrointestinal dr. Hav not gotten any relief whatsoever. Mayb finally
All this is maybe true for some people but Monash University in Australia has a fodmap diet that they have tested for 10 years. I thought, according to the test, that I have SIBO, but Rifamixin is what caused my irritable bowel syndrom to become chronic. I am tolerant to lactose, gluten, corn, eggs and soy and so are a majority of IBS sufferers. I am intolerant to some other fodMaps. So, Dr Hyman, what are you rhinking now, in 2021 about IBS? did you change your treatment?
