You can do a lot these days with color correction and color grading of underwater images - the freediving photography of ‪@BrandonVerdura‬ and pool portraiture of ‪@Karen_Bagley‬ are proof of that. But there are some situations where you NEED strobes to bring out the color, clarity, and definition that would otherwise be lost.
Jean Rydberg gives you the full story of when you need strobes, why you need them, and what to look for when selecting a strobe for underwater use. Learn what happens to light as it passes through the water with plenty of examples of what you're getting and what you're missing.

Why You Need Strobes Underwater:

Jean Rydberg is the President & CEO of Ikelite. She fully embraces the need to travel outside of her hometown (and Ikelite home base) of Indianapolis to experience good diving. She believes that any camera is capable of amazing results in the right hands, and anyone can become a great photographer given the right advice.

One of the best and to the point explanations I've seen on the subject! well done! I'd love to see a video regarding ports: dry & wet and how to and when to use them... what to do to each one to avoid having water dripping through the glass while filming or taking a photo, (ruining the final shot... etc). Thank you!

Hi Gabriel, we are so happy you enjoyed the video! This is one of the most important concepts in underwater photography. We agree that an explanation of dry vs wet domes/lenses would be a great discussion point. This article is a good starting point to explain the use of dry domes: www.ikelite.com/blogs/buying-guides/when-to-use-a-dc-series-dome-port With this article about wet domes: www.ikelite.com/blogs/buying-guides/when-to-use-a-wide-angle-dome-air-lens-wd-3-or-wd-4 Either way, a thin coat of saliva is usually the best prevention for water droplets in your photo.

I was just at the scuba show a few weeks ago in Long Beach. I remember telling the gentlemen at the booth that I wish you folks had made a housing for the GFX 100s. My question is did you folks make a housing for the XT5 for fujifilm.

We have not yet made a housing for the XT-5 but it is in the queue and you should see an announcement in the upcoming weeks!

I normaly use Olympus TG6 which has auto color correction, but if use other Mirrorless camera does it come with similar feature? (Headache for post edit)

Some mirrorless cameras may offer an underwater mode…? But the real power in them is the ability to take manual exposure control over the camera. When combined with strobe lighting and getting close to your subject, this is the best way to obtain accurate colors in your underwater photos. Typically color correction is a bigger factor when shooting available light (non-strobe lit) photography.

what about video lights
@ikelite

Video lights will introduce the color back just like strobes, but in order to get the intensity you need for photos a strobe is ideal because it is only releasing that energy during image capture.

Please, Ikelite, you offer to make a video explaining to customers that we have bought the housing for canon eso sl2, how is the housing 200DLM/C Underwater Housing and Canon Rebel SL2 Camera Kit should be prepared after the first dive? Please, there is no video on this from ikelite, those of us who have bought this housig are also your clients and we are waiting for ikelite to make an explanatory video on this subject, we are their clients too and we will be waiting for you to do at least a video for us.

Thank you for choosing Ikelite products. At this time we have limited resources. We are not in a position to produce content 'on demand' nor can we individually cover each of the 80+ housing models that we currently offer. We will not be able to make a video about the SL2 which is over 5 years old and declining in popularity. The good news is that the SL2 assembly is exactly the same as the SL3 assembly. If you watch the video on the SL3 then you will be good to go!
