I'm still playing the same acoustic guitar I got when I was 18 years old, I'm 44 now. It's an Oscar Schmidt by Washburn. I just love that thang, and I've never regretted that $150 I spent on it.
I bought a small bodied Oscar Schmidt for $70 from a Swedish tourist who bought it as a travel "beater". It sounded good. I sold it to a customer for $50 on credit. He was happy to have an affordable guitar and with being trusted to pay later. I was impressed he paid exactly when he said he would. Everybody won with that guitar!
One crucial rule when buying a guitar: be mentally prepared to walk away empty-handed. When you have saved up your money and you have spent hours on-line researching and drooling, when the day comes when you are finally ready to go out to the guitar shops you are fired up and not mentally prepared to be disappointed. If you can't find a guitar you are excited by, you might be tempted to buy a guitar anyway, just to satisfy your current mindset. Don't. Be prepared before you walk into the shop for the possibiity that the guitar for you might not be in stock today. Better to walk away empty-handed and come back in a month or so than buy a guitar you might feel less than thrilled wiith.
Tacomas rose wood guitars were wonderful I haven't ran into bad ones I bought a fender once and hated it making sire it matches your voice and playing style is most important
Richards Guitars, owned by Richard Chorleton. I bought my Eastman E10Ss slope shouldered dreadnought. Richard offers obscure makers of hand built guitars as an option to well known brand names, these guitars offer value for money as they are not relying on brand names to hike the price up. He will look at your budget and guide you to buy a guitar that suits your needs, not necessarily the highest cost but what suits you and at a price you can afford. My guitar was purchased online and is super easy to play, no finger pain as they are set up beautifully. In the UK, I think he would be hard to beat
Great to see a positive comment about Richard. I am really impressed with the ethos he espouses and by his stand regarding quality guitars in the marketplace. He makes a really refreshing change from the big box sellers. Congratulations on the E10SS, a splendid instrument and very well thought of over at the Acoustic Guitar Forum. I'm seriously considering an Eastman E10-00 and I will be going to Richard for it.
Matt in St Louis is VERY good. I thought I would like one then called him. He found one for me that I wasn't sure of till he sent it and I played it. Fell in love with it & it reminds me & MY sister of furniture in our childhood t home. I told him what I do & what I was missing in my guitarsenal. I never considered them before I heard your approval of them when you were showing part of your guitarsenal.
Great video! I bought my Taylor GS Mini Koa one year ago and I love this gem! Well, I did a lot of online research before going to the store. I mean, a lot :-) Then I played a couple of different guitars and brands. I took my time. And then I just knew it. The Taylor GS Mini Koa is it! Perfect for me.
Hey Tony! My favorite guitar store is Bobs' Guitars in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I've known the owner, Bob Guthart for 40 years or so. I have purchased many guitars and accessories from him over that time for one reason. He is a great listener. We are about the same age and often talk about golf, cars, concerts we've been to, and some of the memories we've had when we played music in our younger years. I was never in a band with Bob' but we played gigs in the same community. Bob still plays gigs! Bob and his staff always make me feel comfortable when I enter the store.
Favorite guitar store is the Folk Music Center in my home town Claremont CA. It has been in the same building since 1958 and it is still owned by the same family. Ben Harper's grandfather started the store and his mom has kept it running. I have been going there my entire life and took guitar lessons from Ben's mom Ellen. If you are ever in the Los Angeles area you need to go there.
The only guy that i had a good relationship with in a guitarstore is retiring now, sadly many shops in Amsterdam have disappeard in the past years, people order on line a lot. The best guitarshop in town has a owner were you don’t bond with easy.....
Also wanted to share my Guitar Geek/Guitarsenal Goals find. At Pro Music(see my other comment) I found a used Martin Custom Shop D35 Seth Avett Signature Model. It's brilliant. Looks, sounds great. I have no hope in getting it.. but someday....
Great show! My favorite guitar store near me is Sam Ash NYC 34th St. Dana is a go to guy. Megan was my go to lady, but she is not longer with the company. They both took the time and patience with me when I purchase my first Taylor guitar over $2,000.00. That first big purchase was so scary, but they helped my level up and there was no buyer's remorse. And Whitney looks soooo beautiful! Congrats to you and your family!
I bought my first guitar just over a year ago from a local independent story. i had never played a guitar before but I knew what money I had to spend, what kind of music/styles I would want to learn to play and how much money I could spend on the instrument. The owner of the shop was fabulous; he played the several guitars I had shortlisted (based on a year of online research), suggested one or two more, demonstrated all guitars with using different playing styles again and again so I could listen to the differences in sound. He answered all my questions, taught me a few simple chords and left me to play with the guitars, walking in every once in a while to answer further questions and then basically left me to make up my mind. At no point was there any attempt to push one guitar over another or force me to make up my mind. It was the best shopping experience I have ever had. I was looking for a guitar with a warm sound that I could learn and grow with for years and I walked out of that shop with a lovely Martin 000-10E that I absolutely love! Every time I play that guitar it makes me smile. I second what is said in this video. Do you research, take your time but - above all - find yourself a good guitar store that knows its business and is happy to take the time to answer your questions, demo stuff and let you play. Oh, and yes... if the guitars you have tried don't float your boat, don't buy. There are more guitars out there than you could ever play so try some more :-)
Gryphon Strings, in Palo Alto, CA - and it’s great to work with the whole team there - for buying guitars, accessories, getting repairs/setups/work done on my guitars! Of course it’s a total treat to visit with Frank Ford and have him guide me on what to do to my instruments, and I always like shopping with Paul, getting work done by Brian if Frank is busy, and Michael helped me a LOT buying my most recent guitar. It was great to buy a Ukulele from Alex!

Wildwood here in Colorado was okay. I was gonna trade a Martin D18 GE for a Gibson J55 but basically the Martin wasn’t good enough for them so I had to get the J55 outright. But I don’t regret it at all I love both of them and they both serve a purpose. The J55 is very comfortable and sooo sweet sounding the D18 is boomy and loud. The only other thing that bothered me was when they asked me my last name the owner said “oh, most last names have been Americanized” Like... okay? I’ll buy it somewhere else then
Good skunk story! I had weekend visitors from LI (I'm in the Catskills) who were getting ready to leave after a weekend visit and had preloaded their van when their Samoyed and our golden chased a skunk into our enclosed porch. Yeah, that was pretty bad, but the Samoyed ran out of the porch, jumped into the open van and proceeded to rub against their bags and the seats. 9 pm we are driving to my mom's 20 miles away who had some professed anti skunk smell stuff. Good times! Too bad you missed all the Lamaz stuff. Get ready for a great adventure!!!
Yes Tony, I have lots of experience with dogs and skunks! It always gets them in the face and always after midnight, when bedtime is hours later! I've found it key to was/ shampoo your dog a sap even though you lack those 3 ingredences, which we keep handy. Tried all those skunk shampoos and found the baking soda, dish soap and hydrogen peroxide the best. And dogs generally don't learn the lesson and keep chasing skunk pals. They just can't resist! Now your lives are more complete with this experience. Great show with great points when buying the "right" guitar for yourself. Only have one store in the area for new guitars but I am doing a search. I'm in the market for a resonator guitar and your shows on this topic were very helpful! The owners Emory & Charlene are great people friendly, super knowledgeable, great shop. Both stores are family businesses. Atlas don't live in Maryland any longer really miss them.

I recently on-line purchased a 2020 Taylor 712ce, Did not have the sound and pliability that I was expecting. I had previously listened to several you-tube videos and all sounded great. Tried a new set of elixir 12-53, still no good. Wound up using a mix set of Earnie ball light/light-medium strings. Strings 1,2,&3 are light and 4,5,&6 are light-medium Really responds well to finger picking. Action is great also. Congrats to your family addition. I raised 3 children playing guitar and singing. They loved the songs out of the Peggy Seeger Folk song book published in 1964. This book is autographed by Peggy also.
The whole thing about connecting with the guitar is why I don't have a good playable guitar now and haven't started the classes. I've handled enough guitars to know what feels good to me and that two guitars made by the same company and same model can feel different. And I just haven't had the time to go guitar shopping. The guitar I have is an acoustic I found in the trash about 25 years ago and I spent about $20 on it in tuning knobs and strings and some frets but the action is still so high it is annoying to play.
Great tips and good points. I love that you have a dog named Argos. I had a Catahoula about twenty years ago that earned that name. (I believe names help shape things, so do not name things lightly.) He saved my life 4 times I am aware of. Once from a grizzly, and twice from a charging bull. If you named your dog that then you know where it comes from and my Argos had loyalty down in spades. Even though it’s been so long since he passed, ALL of my family still come to me and tell me how much they miss him, especially the kids. I hope yours gives you every bit the service and love my guy gave to me, but if she does, beware the hole in your whole life that can never be filled once she is gone... Thanks Tony.
My first acoustic guitars were a custom built, handmade basic classical by Pimentel and a Totally custom, handmade steel string designed by myself and the master luthier. I didn’t know much about what I was buying but they are incredible guitars and I love them. I agree with you completely. Ask lots and lots and lots and lots of questions. If they can[t answer them or simply aren’t interested in helping then you have the answers you need. Go buy your instrument somewhere else where they are interested in you business and in furthering you guitar journey.
I haven’t so much had buyer’s remorse but I have purchased some better some worse. The worst was my first electric. It was a MIM Fender Strat I bought at Music Go Round locally. The sales person was about as disinterested as he could be and afterward I found all kinds of problems. The biggest problem was that three of the saddle screws were completely stripped, meaning intonation could not be adjusted no matter what and the guitar would not stay in tune no matter what. I had no idea what I thee problem was until I spent time learning about guitars. I made all the repairs and replaced plenty of parts and the guitar is great. Now. The moral of the story... spend some time learning about what to look for when buying used guitars. Thanks for the video Tone!
I got a yamaha F310 and still had some buyers remorse, cause some china brands made cheap semi acoustic guitars. But after playing it everyday I don't regret buying it at all. Next guitar will definitely be a solid top with pickup.
My story is of a guitar I liked but didn’t like me. Quite a few years ago I did my homework and had my local music store order me a Fender California Kingman acoustic guitar. Cool head stock, solid wood gold top, I liked the vibe. The problem, I am a small woman and the guitar was dreadnought size. After playing for a while my right arm would hurt and go numb. The bought was too big for me. I then went to my local luthier and made my first custom guitar purchase. My personal choice of woods, neck profile, body size, and fret board inlays. I also had a 12 string made. On a trip later to Phoenix I stopped in to the Phoenix Guitar Co and fell in love with some beautiful woods. They made my nylon string and kept me informed with emailed photos of the progress until they shipped my Phoenix Flame (flame fret board inlays).
Great episode! I have 2 stories to share with you. First - per your request, my favorite guitar store is Alamo Music Center in San Antonio, TX. Chris does most of the videos for RU-vid, and is great to work with; but, last year Nick helped me pick a starter guitar for my Granddaughter's 9th birthday. After much discussion (and no rushing), I was confident in my choice of a Baby Taylor. It was an extremely pleasant experience, and my Granddaughter LOVES it! (I am also impressed with Eddie's Guitar and Matt Chulka - I live south of Houston, so there hasn't been a chance to meet in person, but I have messaged Matt several times about different guitars, and he is fantastic in responding.) Second story - I got back into guitar ~4 years ago (after not playing for almost 20 years), and decided on a Martin (my dream guitar since 1968) as a 60th birthday present to myself. I found several used ones at a Guitar Center near me. I went in knowing only I wanted a solid wood guitar, made in Nazareth, and walked out with a 2010 Custom DSR/GC - basically a D-15 with Sitka (mine is bearclaw) top and EIR B&S - no regrets. When Martin introduced the Limited Edition Custom D18 Model America 1, I fell in love with it. I listened to EVERY video I could, read every review I could, and even wrote several of the reviewers about their impressions. So, I started a Reverb search and found a beautiful (mint) guitar. Watched the price, chatted with the seller several times, and when we got the price where I felt comfortable, pulled the plug. When I got the guitar, I installed new strings (Martin's Retro Tony Rice) and absolutely love it! You hit all the right marks on eliminating buyer's remorse. Now - I still need a 12-string and a small body, and maybe just one more... Steve from Brazoria, TX
Another awesome epsode of what im calling the Home Office Sessions of Acoustic Tuesday. To answer your question, my favorite one stop guitar shop is Winter Sound Music Store in Gloucester, Va. Jim runs a tight ship in there, and is always there to help and answer any questions i may have. Even if im just going there for some strings, picks, etc, i always browse his current stock first, because theres always something new there that might catch my eye.
Great advice dude. I would also add that often you can rent guitars fairly cheaply before you buy them if you're not totally sure. Up here in Canada, L&M even lets you apply 80% of the rental $$ you paid if you do decide to buy it in the end. Cheers!
I don't have much luck Tony. In my area there is only 1 guitar store very small with exclusive instruments with prices out of my humble range so I never go there. I bought my 2 guitars online on eBay and tried them when picking them up. No other possibility. Yes I regret both of them a Yamaha and an ibanez but nothing you can do. Great reviews but nothing for me. That said don't trust reviews. What other think about it is irrelevant. Everyone has a different feel for the guitar. I loved one guitar of a friend but he was not willing to sell it to me. Yup ultimately its also about money. If you have the dough then you can go to a guitar store and just buy what you really like. My dream is a Martin. If you don't have it then its tough luck some times. Still unhappy practicing.
that's exactly how I bought my first acoustic guitar. I went to a local Guitar Center and saw a stack of Epiphone PR-150s. I bought one and as luck would have it it was a really nice guitar. sounded to my ear very good, nice medium to low action. It's still my only acoustic. never felt a need to upgrade to a "better" guitar.
Yes a couple of times in the past, luckily it wasn't too costly, mostly a pain the hind parts that don't actually play the guitar, no wonder! Good topic to cover. Hope your baby and wife are doing great!
Myhres Music in Edmonton. They've worked on my stand-up bass, banjo, and all my guitars. Byron is not only a great business owner, but he is also the go-to stand-in player when groups come to town and need a stand-in player. They also have a great selection of Collings and Martin guitars. Excellent place to shop and for service on your stringed instruments.
i've bought about four or five guitars from a shop where i got to play them first, in the last six years though i've bought, and sold, about 50, and kept six of those, and will probably keep those six. i buy online as cheap as possible knowing that i'll probably sell them on, it's given me the chance to own some really lovely guitars, and hold onto some amazing guitars. there have been pups, but those pups just went on their way. i always recommend going to a shop and trying a guitar out, and keep trying guitars until one grabs you and won't let go, but i'm happy enough not knowing what's in the box that's just been delivered, christmas every day.
my current line up: a 66 gibson J45 i've had since the 70's, a gibson j35 (2016) that was half price, a 69 epiphone texan that was a "project" i got for a steal and is now back in shape, a 2014 maton egb808te, spruce and maple, sweet, a larrivee OMO3Z - zebrano, looks and sounds extraordinary, an epiphone AJ220 that's beat up but sweet, and a tenth the price of a J45, a Kadence "acoustica, a friend bought for me, made from ash, really nice sound, really good looking, a 60's framus texan (framus texan was my first guitar, so i got this even though it's too beat up to play), a tanglewood i got real cheap because the neck is warped, but it's great for bottleneck, and kiddies gibson maestro, which looks like a baby J45 complete with that shaped scratch guard, and finally but not least AT ALL, a martin OOOX1, plastic back and sides, horrid looking, got it with case for £350 - best guitar i EVER played or owned.
i've come to the conclusion there are no bad guitars, yes some are really badly made and hard to play, but really it comes down to that "connection". i had a framus L50, framus was my first guitar so i bought this one for nostalgia, but i couldn't get a decent sound out of it, so when i got hold of the framus texan i decided to sell it. the guy came to try it out and it's designed to take nylon or steel strings, it had nylon on and he had a hard time getting it to work for him, so eager to make the sale we put some steel strings on and he played it again, and boy did he make it sound great, he played some blues, somes jazzy numbers, and really got into it, and bought it. so there it is, i couldn't get a sound out of it that i liked, he had a hard time to begin with, but although it's tiny guitar and quiet, he made it sound awesome. and i've done comparisons of £25 guitars with my better ones, and recordings it's hard to tell which is which. it's down to that "connection", if you can make it work even a "bad guitar" can sound awesome.
Encore Music is my local. They sold me drum sticks since the '90s, my drums (which I still play). Dana sold me a vintage ES 125 15 years ago, a Les Paul Jr, and my J45 last year. Best shop around Nacogdoches, Texas.
Paul Van Bree of Kaufmann Guitars Leiden Holland is the man for me. I was purchasing (from the UK with no option of travel to meet in person) a new Hastrom Siljan dreadnaught (an underrated flat picking guitar in my opinion). Paul talked me through my requirements for set up and made all the arrangements for that and shipping. Result? A happy customer!
Tony. Spot on with the checklist. From my experience. Try them all and ignore the brand on the headstock. That's how I found Breedlove guitars. For me the fit,feel and tone just fits. My favorite go to music store is Lollipop Music in Princeton Wv. Have known Janet and Janel for many years and they always do me right. For the record I just ordered another Breedlove. Regardless of the name it's all personal preference. Feeling excited and inspired.
I really like Guitar Vista and Grumpy’s Guitars in Albuquerque. The owners are great and very helpful. The brothers at Pimentel Guitars are great if you want to buy a high end custom acoustic (classical, flamenco, acoustic steel string).
What do we do about the guilty feeling of not purchasing a guitar? After over 20 years I walked into a guitar shop and tested out a few guitars I felt very guilty to not purchase any. To feel better I thought I'd buy some strings, but they didn't have the ones that I like, I thought to myself you've been trying guitars here for about an hour you need to buy something, I asked for thumb guitars picks, they had these big chunky ones I really didn't like, I walked out of the guitar shop with some shame. I did leave the guitar shop a little more knowledgeable and with an idea of how expensive guitars sounds. Also they were very helpful. But I don't think I'd return to test out other guitars, I find it a bit embarrassing.
Im going to look at that guitar in a few hours! Tacoma dm9 for $565. Looking for all solid wood and 314 taylor or larrivee was tried but i wasnt 100% in love with them. At $1500 ish i couldn't pull trigger. At $565 from private owner i am optimistic
I researched for over 2 months in internet before buying my first acoustic guitar and I didn't regret. That Takamine, sounds wonderfull every time and makes me play again and again. The second acoustic (other brand) I bought just at the guitar store, without knowing anything and it was a total crap, never used it, untunable, uncomfortably... my recomendation, study and fine tune what you want don't rush, hear it and compare it with other brands and models. And it will last you forever.
hi tony about the poor puppy that got had by a skink we always use tomato souse or tomato juice it cut the smell real well i live in tx in the country there are a shit loads of skinks here our dog wont learn to not chase everything that comes along so once or twice a year we have to buy about 3 or 4 large cans of tomato juice good luck with puppy and on you new son
Outstanding info - a must see - especially for first-second-third... time guitar buyers. My first "real" guitar is a Guild D50 I bought at Zap Music on Fullerton Ave in Chicago in 1974. My favorite guitar store is Maple Street guitars in Atlanta. All the staff are great but I probably have the closest bond with Lindsey. I also pick a banjo (oh heresy - boooo). Favorite banjo store is Banjo.com.

In the ignorance is bliss category; purchased my first dreadnought (based on what I could afford) at Chicago Guitar Gallery in '75. Put ina Dean Markley a years later. God, that Ibanez was great solid axe (stolen). My regrets have been via chasing tone on the cheap

I don’t have buyers remorse , my problem is music shops always sell you a guitar that’s not set up properly and has been played by dozens of people. I’m yet to find a music shop where the staff respect me
I had a great time at Kurosawa Instruments in Tokyo’s Guitar Street. (Very close to Ochanomizu station exit). The staff were very nice and gave me their honest opinion on guitars based on their own experiences. There was a nice young lad named Yuichi (I think) who even agreed to a nice discount for me (I didn’t qualify for the Tax Free price since I live in Japan) and got my price close to Tax Free price. Good shop, great selection too. Also, check out the guitar stores in the alleys too, I found one that had Lowden and Maton guitars as well. Another had Washburn and Eastman. Explore and see your options.
I sold my first vintage guitar at that store, the first time I visited Japan around 1980. It was a 1965 Fender P-Bass I bought from Norm Harris. I traded it for a Yamaha DX-7. Amazingly I was able to get on the train and work my way through the stores to Kurosawa, they had bought some guitars from me in Hollywood, but those guys spoke English...About a year later I moved to Japan and lived there for 5 years. I'm pretty sure I have sold more vintage guitars in Japan than any other foreigner. I pretty much lived on DX-7s for 5 years, I traded vintage guitars for them...Anyway, not to bore you, not too many people know the stores in Tokyo...but it was their competitor that I sold most of my guitars to...Ishibashi Gakki, the biggest light instrument music store in Tokyo. I'm an upright bass player, but recently bought an acoustic guitar during the pandemic. I have some great stories...but I won't bore you.
First.. I wanted to say just how beautiful Whitney looks. I am sure she is ready and I can't wait for your new adventure to begin. I am sure Ayden is looking forward to being a big brother too. As for favorite music store - it's Music Villa. Paul is the best and I know that when I am getting a guitar from MV, I am getting one that he believes is a great fit for me. Finally, poor Argos. Our previous dog was skunked 2x within about a month. Just so you know, every time it rains for the next few months you will smell skunk. LOL
Skunk spray is a base chemical ;Tomato juice or sauce is acidic and does a great job of making your pet smell actually delicious! From a Vermonter eyup.
Favorite store: Metro Music Dothan Alabama. Favorite guys John Clayton (builds custom guitars) and Mike. Both work at metro. Deskunk with tomato juice or tomato sauce. I promise it works.
I had bought 3 guitars from the same place. HATE each one of them.. tried guitar center don't care for them. Believe it or not my go to place is a pawn shop. the guy who runs the place used to play. That's were I got my Martin guitar 🎸

Perhaps the moral of the story is not to let your dog outside at night in Montana. Same thing goes for me here in western New York. It's actually quite rural.
When on vacation if I told my wife, instead of a photo memory I think a 2 or 3 thousand guitar would be a better memory of our vacation. Unfortunately my wife laughing would be the memory.
I recently bought a Taylor 224CE-K DLX and it seems like the action is at a different height every time I pick it up to play it. I keep it in its case with humidipaks, but I seem to be having to adjust the truss rod every couple of days, but when I get the action low enough to feel good, I'm getting some buzz on the second string. I've taken it to the store I bought it at but all the do is adjust the truss rod as well. Is there something I may be missing? Or is this common for Taylor Guitars?
Well said I've been looking into a good guitar but I'm left-handed. so I can't just go to a guitar store like a normal person can I have a sales engineer at sweetwater to help me.
