Hey Guys! Today's video is a review of Getting Things Done by David Allen. I wanted to share with you the 5 steps from this book and how I have applied them to my planning system. Have you read Getting Things Done? Did you apply anything to your planning system?
I’ve read it and watched multiple videos on how to apply the GTD method for over a year. But you, my dear, has simplified it so very much that I can now get things done. This video is very very functional and to the point. Please continue to provide great, timely content. Blessing to you.
My worst trait is that I'm binge watching your videos as they're so addicted and helpful instead of getting things done 😂 I read the book before but it was so overwhelming, now I understood more
I've been doing GTD for years, long before I discovered #plannertube 😁I haven't always followed the system religiously, but it's helped to keep me sane and later helped me decide what I needed from a planner system rather than just going with what everyone else was using.
I just finished his book. I’m struggling with this so much because I honestly would prefer to do this digitally but the ability to have this big overview you can see on paper like you... so beneficial. BUT my planner is actually a TN and so having to write and rewrite and move things and cross off. Uggggh. Yeah. The struggle IS. REAL. So I’m literally at a standstill. I do have some empty happy planners but they’re all classic size which, too, I wouldn’t wanna have to figure out printing configurations or having to write and rewrite. Your consistency is amazing!!!! So inspiring
These are some great ideas. My only problem is if I don't "make an appointment" to do the laundry, the dishes, declutter, etc. then it WON'T get done. However, I can prioritize tasks because my business duties may need to be done ahead of my housework. I may find myself coming back to this video repeatedly. Gee, I wonder if you can wear out a digital video?
I’m in a similar situation so I’m really trying to focus on routines or, as some people like to call them, anchor habits. E.g., Every night, run the dishwasher after dinner even if it isn’t full. You can then empty the dishwasher every morning while you wait for the coffee to brew or after breakfast. Running the dishwasher requires less water than hand washing so even though it seems wasteful it is less wasteful than the alternatives that may be required (you know that feeling when you finally have enough dishes to fill the dishwasher, only to be disappointed that they don’t all fit so you either have to hand wash them or put them in the sink to wait for the NEXT load).
This video was amazing! So well done and helpful, thank you for putting in the effort to make and post this!!! I’m about to go binge some more of your channel now that I’m feeling inspired to plan more productively ☺️
Hi! Thank to you for this video. I love how you have read the book. So neat. No highlights. Unlike me, I need to highlight the words to make it stand out.
I have a daily planner and often I will have notes and things I may need to refer back to but don’t necessarily tasks associated with them (ie. notes about my mother’s health). How would you handle something like that?
It’s best to create a special section for frequently accessed information. You could also apply Ryder Carroll’s bullet journal Table of Contents concept - basically, you would still record the info on the current day, week, or month (depending on your planner) but you would make a page to record the date (or page number) every time you add notes about your mom’s health.
Is there a place where you can purchase the planner inserts? I have a Franklin covey binder classic size and I really like the GTD but it needs to fit in my classic binder from Franklin covey.
It’s available at OfficeMax / OfficeDepot, but I saw it on clearance last week so you may want to check online first. I’ve seen an Amazon link in the description box of previous videos, but Amazon didn’t seem to have this color.
I don’t think Allen tells you to capture daily. He literally tells toy minds are for thinking things not holding thoughts. His capture is basically a brain dump. But hey I suppose daily is one way to do it. Other than that I think your simplification is is a good introduction.
Allen does capture daily - there’s a RU-vid video of him at his desk capturing daily items. The brain dump is for the initial setup, and I can’t remember if he says how often it should be repeated in case you weren’t diligent about capturing items as they come up.
