I really respect how he tries to relate to students, and has a passion for what he does. I'm 16 years old from queens NY, and the school I go to is like many city schools , full of teachers who know the material, but simply don't know how to teach or communicate with their students in an effective way. that is the reason that students like me lose interest in school and honestly sometimes don't go at all. A lot of kids my age feel like learning is a boring obligation. This man is inspirational!

I TOTALLY agree with this!! Content should be last so you have the chance to build relationships. No one can reach their students without getting to know them first and making those connections!! I learned this in middle school...

I do the same things in my classroom (Health & PE is a science=kinesiology). I meet the students where they are and we work together to get them to where they should be. I can reach the kids, just like Chris said because I do whatever is necessary in my classroom to teach them. I don't get parental support nor faculty support; but my kids know their stuff. All an awesome teacher needs is knowledge, a heart, and a good imagination and they will be able to do wonders.

Thanks for great ideas of teaching and learning. I have always taught Science from the Practical experiences of my students that they have everyday of their life. They enjoy Physics as they can make the sense of concepts learnt and understand why we need to learn such concepts. All videos are great and hope they are free to share.

Hey THNKR, Check out the educational institutions of Jiddu Krishnamurthi. He was an Indian philosopher/ spiritualist and his approach to education and teaching was very different. I went to one of his schools in India, where he has 7 of them. One of his schools is also in Ojai, California. Its called Oak Grove School of the Krishnamurti Foundation of America

One thing has struck me about this. I am not sure, but I don't think it is in the UK culture for teachers to shake the hands of students. I am not a science teacher but I totally get the point that you need to bring in to the lesson things from the culture of the kids that you teach. And I am pleased when a kid asks me something that I don't know, and I tell them so. It means that we are both about to learn something,

his Ideas may have been tried but It just sounds refreshing to here details of how to implement the idea. It's not about just trying it. I absolutely agree that parents should be one of or the main motivator. Its a big problem..people work hard and they get lazy when they come home. I have NO idea how much to pay a teacher. A real teacher, who gets so involved with the community and kids and is not only motivating them also enabling them to be motivated. How much is their future worth?

Dear America, know that... Teachers have NEVER been more educated. There has never been a time where there has been access to the tools, technology and information that we now have availible to us. Never has there been so much research availible to us. Teachers have NEVER been more regulated and managed. THE PROBLEM with education is not with your school, your curriculum or you teachers. The overhaul needs to happen at HOME. Step up parents.

@ember fly ha ha wow, what a harsh thing to say about someone you know nothing about, this guy is getting a chance to talk about a passion of his, and he is being loud? I would be to, plus he is a teacher, he projects his voice every day, hard to turn that off.

One thing that adults and educators seem to always forget is that when young people choose a culture, they choose it for themselves, as their own exclusive culture. When teachers come in thinking they're all hip-hop or part of whatever culture the students have chosen, it is totally annoying to the students and comes across as fake and insincere. This guy has some good insights but I disagree with doing things like "calling a cypher". The kids are going to roll their eyes and tune out.

Great ideas, you are heaping on a pile of stuff on to new teachers still getting their bearings and old teachers that don't want to change, but those are solutions to a problem and could very well work. The BIGGEST PROBLEM is the lack of a strong foundation in america. How can anyone expect success in a chemistry class where students can not add or divide properly?

Not bad but these ideas have been tried over and over again by urban teachers. It puts teachers back in the position of being the main motivators. Until parents begin to take responsibility for raising respectable kids we wont get far. Also were giving teachers more work and paying them less. Who wants a job like that.
