What you call mistakes, I call being hugely and unreasonably hard on yourself. In a week of very little sleep, in a location with volcanoes going off, incredible scenes around every corner and the most spectacular sunset most of us will ever see - plus a flat tyre! - you've come away with a rich set of stunning, world-class photos. I'd say that's a job well done 👍
@jileha

Although I agree with you to a large extent, I don’t think Nigel’s reflections are ”unreasonably hard on himself”. I agree with Nigel’s take on this and admire him for his critical eye, insights and high standards, which make him the great photographer he is. These aspects are particularly important considering he is a professional photographer. In every job, you need to plan for eventualities and take responsibility for when things don’t go as well as they could have. So although it is very human, totally relatable and therefore understandable - and, don’t get me wrong, also excusable - how these mistakes happened, it is also important to realize how they could have been prevented. Thanks, Nigel, for the very honest reflection, from which we all could learn - because we’ve all been there, done that. And it is difficult to live with the retrospective ”had I just done that” missed opportunities.

It’s sooo easy to find mistakes after the event. Our brain tricks us when we’re on location, but snaps into clarity once the images are in front of us in two dimensions. Great video, Nigel!

I can top all of those mistakes. Try driving 200 miles and then getting a call from your wife asking what was in the bag you left behind. That would be the camera.

😂🤗 I once got up so early to shoot the sunrise in the most beautiful place. I had to drive quite a distance and then also hike up there but I managed it in time. As I was finally preparing my camera for the first shot, excited, cause the sky turned into amazing purple colors, my heart suddenly sank: I couldn't take one single picture - I had everything, lenses, batteries,... but no memory card. I realized it was still at home, plugged into my computer. 🙄

Nigel, I think this is what makes you my favorite RU-vidr. You're humble, human, relatable, and aren't afraid to bare the things you would have preferred to do differently in hindsight. I bash myself all the time for my failures in the field, and seeing an accomplished pro like you admit that even you have struggles sometimes is incredibly motivating and helps me be easier on myself. Thank you!

I am in my fourth year of photography and it is so nice for me to learn that two of my favorite professionals do make the same mistakes as me (obviously way less often!). What I very much like about you two is the effort to try and squeeze everything possible out of an opportunity. I don't think not doing something because you are very tired is the same as being lazy. Also, when a photo does not work for you does not mean it doesn't work for someone else. The second photo of the "wide shot mistake" is to me not about the composition but all about the light. Thank you, this was very motivational!!

There’s laziness and there’s safety, if you’re exhausted, then playing hopscotch in a glacial stream is risky. Adding more time to your schedule is the only way to get around this, we’re all not 20 years old anymore 😊

Thanks for another brilliant video, and for your candour. I can relate to so much of this - especially when tired it is so easy to make little mistakes and so it is heartening to hear that you also struggle with this! One example I had recently was not considering compression - I shot wide and had a really good composition and so just finished up, but didn't try out a zoomed composition which would have had a much greater impact due to compression

Nigel, this is exactly what I needed. For me, the best way to understand proper composition is to see the full picture on your tablet followed by the cropping frame repositioned to show a better composition. The before and after is always remarkable to me. I know you professionals like to get it right the first time but I have no issue with cropping an "ok" picture into a stunning photograph.

As an enthusiastic (but currently locked-down) amateur Down Under, I'm grateful for your candid and well-explained analysis of your pictures - this will prove a great help. I also think that much of what you've said can boil down to paying attention - and when you're stressed, sleep-deprived, and pressed sorely for time that can be a big task - although scouting the locale is perhaps exempt. Being meticulous and attending to detail is the hardest thing for me in photography, and I'm known for my meticulousness and eye for detail so it seems I have a casual attitude towards my images. I think I need to stop looking at my images and ensure that I *examine* them and *consider* them. So thanks for this invaluable lesson.

Great video Nigel. I was talking about shooting too wide in my last video and the disadvantages that come with it. I feel its always a good idea to bring a telephoto zoom lens even when you have a wide angle. It helps eliminate a lot of negative space and using the telephoto lets you can work a bit better on the composition. Making the small adjustments is always a great piece of advice. Too many people shoot in AWB but I prefer to tweak that to my environment and the conditions im working in. Love the images from Iceland too. Great shots! Thanks for sharing Nigel. interesting!

It's such a good comment about getting rid of midground by going lower. Almost genius in its simplicity. At first I thought How can you keep foreground and background and not midground? And you did it! Apart from that don't beat yourself up too much about photographing the entire Island while you're there or you'll just go bonkers. You could visit the place a hundred times and still not exhaust all possibilities.

One of the biggest mistakes I made was not increasing the ISO when photographing the light on the dunes in the Sahara Desert 3 years ago. In the early hours just before and after sunrise, the light changes incredibly quickly, but at ISO 100 long shutter speeds were needed at lower light levels, which meant that I blurred the movement of some camel treckers. There were also some stong gusts of wind leading to some (unintentional) camera movement, even on a sturdy tripod. If I'd increased the ISO I could have used shorter shutter speeds and frozen the movement. It spoiled what otherwise would have been some nice images. I also have what is one of my favourite images of some camel treckers taken from the top of a dune when the sun was a little higher, but still low enough to cast some long shadows. Unfortunately I cut off the shadow at the left of the frame. If I'd just moved a little to the left I'd have got the full shadow and the photogaph would have been so much better.

I get the point about lower composition in certain cases, or the general point about choosing a composition to minimize or maximize certain area of the image. But come on, that flower shot is simply sublime the way it is. I think it is all about the vastness of the dark dirt plain, and in the middle of it this gorgeous flower.

The location is sublime, the shot not so much, the flower isn't the the middle of the plain, but at the bottom of the frame with very uneven spacing, it's just not balanced as well as it could be.

Thanks for this excellent video, Nigel. Recognizing and owning one's mistakes is important. Even more important is determining what could have been differently to get a better result, and remembering next time out. This video did all that for the mistakes you identified, which should result in us all knowing how to avoid each of them. But will we all make them anyway? Of course! ;) My Achilles heel is failing to notice some extraneous small item lying in an inconvenient part of the shot, until I get home.

I am heading to Iceland in 3 weeks! I'm really into photography and am so looking forward to trying to capture the landscapes and the emotions of myself, my wife, and our friends on the trip! I do worry though that I won't necessarily be able to get the shots I'm envisioning because my wife and our friends are not big into photography, so I don't think they are going to want to get to a location hours in advance to "get the shot". BUT I do have to remind myself at times that its about the journey, and if your photographs can capture the essence of that, then you did a good job! Obviously I'm a big fan of your work I'm constantly looking to your videos for tips and inspirations for my landscapes and I think your first "mistake" of shooting too wide will be my biggest focus. haha

about #1: I still remember your video making a big vista (I think it was in the Lake District) out of 19 (?) single shots. Since then I often do the same (it's kinda like going very wide) and if I don't like the final pano, I hope I have a good detailed view from one of the single shots (or something I can use with only a small crop!) 😊 Learning from the pro in good and bad times! Iceland is one of those places that creates sleep deprivation due to its multitude of beauteous sites. Bad decisions happen a lot more frequently. It's refreshing to discover that accomplished professionals such as yourself still make silly mistakes. Gives us hope. My biggest mistake is going to a location with someone who has no interest in photography. Then I'm constantly aware of their impatience and rolling eyes. My favourite photo shoot was with my friend's teenage son who loves photography. We spent hours laying on a cliff watching and shooting puffins.

Thanks for sharing - learning from our own mistakes is good, but it is better to learn from someone else's mistakes so we can not make (or at least reduce the chance ;) ) to make those same mistakes ourselves.

Quite a good set of lessons, hope I remember them. Shooting wide is really difficult to get over with

Something I always need to remind myself, so many times I take a few different compositions of a scene and end up liking one I didn't even consider might be the best one until I see it on the computer when processing. Then I think "why didn't I just take more shots!! It's like I think I'm shooting film or am going to wear the shutter out or something. Now I always tell myself "take a lot of different shots, you can never have too many to choose from!" Problem is you always look at them differently each viewing too, you're doing great!

Your images are great as they are, but it is a good reason to plan another trip to Iceland, but longer this time, so you have more time to scout locations and sleep! I am sure there must be some unexplored places that would be amazing to discover. I like hearing about your thought process and see what you mean about making small changes to make the images even better.

I have watched each of your videos. After watching the first episode I searched the rest and am now up to date. Your appeal for me personally is that after years as an amateur photographer I now have the time to invest in capturing better photos. I have also found that landscape photography will be my focus. I would ask if you would take specific suggestions for videos that are focused on editing and preparing photo files to be uploaded to a printing company. Please and thank you. I love the videos

Calling these "stupid" mistakes is a bit clickbaity, but the lessons I learned while watching were so valuable that I don't mind the clickbait. I love how well-reasoned your points are. Thanks for sharing this.

Pretty hard on yourself Nigel - I have to go back to all the things you were doing for us as you were shooting. There is simply a limit to having multiple balls in the air and also harnessing the necessary brain power to get all these things done in real time. When we are comfortably sitting in front of our monitors having a coffee, it is easy to say what should have been. I think the best cure is to recognize special scenes, absorb the moment for a few seconds, and let your mind do the things it knows to do. Trying to schedule fir flat tires, etc AND get even a decent amount of sleep means you probably miss other opportunities. You are amazing and thanks so much for sharing with us.

I know exactly what you mean as I was there 20 Aug 2021 , on revew wish I did different, not easy as I was on organized toors and had to keep to there times! Thankfully I took my trusted 24-105mm "as I call it my holiday lense". I always mindful to try to zoom/crop in with it though.

Oh yes, I can relate so much. Thanks for sharing those! I've just had another one this Saturday: I need to stop shooting wide open! I had no reason not to stop down, no wind, tripod ... I checked focus for the tree I focussed on but not the other ones in the scene. They're just slightly out of focus, hardly noticeable, but it bothers me so much. 😄

I think mistakes are great learning opportunities. But, and this is maybe the most important thing, learning from them does not mean you will never make mistakes again, because we (humans) are not perfect. So, think of mistakes as a learning opportunity but be kind to yourself if sometimes you make a mistake. That inner critic does not have to be so harsh. With that in mind, this video is also great for my learning because you explain so well what you think went wrong. So, thank you so much for sharing and for all the work you put in to these videos. They are both educational and interesting to watch. Love your photos and your videos!

When you took that volcano shot I was thinking there was just a bit too much black in the middle at the time, I was thinking personally I would have tried to minimise the amount of dark beach on the diagonal to the left as it felt very heavy. Still an absolutely fantastic shot though!

I think we all look back at photos we took and say "If I only did .." I do it a lot, but there was something that made you take the shot in the first place. So don't be hard on yourself. I am also sure that most of us look at others shots and go "I would have of done this, and that ...." Its always a good thing that we all want to improve our photography and seeing a professional go over the things they wish they did to me is a good thing. So thanks for sharing the tips.

Its not really about the mistakes but making improvements on what you are doing. However you still make incredible photos.

A great and honest video we can all learn from Nigel! I think you're being a bit hard on yourself calling them stupid though...I think tiredeness/exhaustion and multi-tasking had big hands in it. I started vlogging a year ago and am trying to find how I can make the best videos I can whilst minimising the impact on my photography...it's really not easy to do and I'm still trying things out to get the balance right. Being not the strongest person and also having some issues around energy I've so far been just using a single camera (Panasonic S5 now) for both my photography and most of my video, and a GoPro 9 for extra bits or vlogging...it's not perfect but getting better and I shall keep on trying new things to improve. I take my hat off to you for the quality of videos you produce and your photography - I can appreciate the effort your videos must take to make so to still be taking great photos whilst doing your videos is a real achievement!
