Not to many people these days realise that the 79 series land cruiser isn’t built for Touring, comfort off-road capability. They are designed for farmers and the mining industry. I’ve driven dozens of 79series in all over the world in underground mines where they are trashed 24hours a day in low range for 99% of there life. We in the mining industry don’t need track correction huge power cup holders a fancy steering wheel (it’s only there to turn the front wheels) These land cruisers are the only vehicle that can and does last in the harsh underground environment (high salt content water mud and dirt) plus being driven in low range at 3-4000rpm it’s whole life, nothing else lasts. So to all these people that whinge about the 79 series maybe have a look into what they are actually built for. You head to the country you will see stock 79 series as farm utes now I’m pretty sure a farmer doesn’t care about cup holders when his got a sick sheep sitting on the passenger seat.
Yeah mate spot on I use mine as a spray truck as far as I’m concerned it’s cheaper than a tractor faster and more comfortable it gets me around the country side
@@unmentionable4383 I remember speaking to a Fitter. An I asked him what was going to happen when these vehicles no longer meet emmisions an ANCAP safety regulations. His response was 'well what are you going to replace it with?' there is nothing else out there.. won't happen. He was right.
your honesty is refreshing!!! maybe hilux needs to be improved to attract 79 series buyers so these things can finally end production, I have always struggled to see the value in these as new vehicle purchases, particularly with track correction issues, age of design, and no ANCAP rating or airbags etc.
I really like the 79 series but all these flaws turns me off from buying one.I think toyota are really taking the piss when they don't fix these things especially when they have made so much money from honest aussies who buy them.Cheers
I appreciate this so much - I wish more people would be super open about the issues of vehicles (especially from new and stock) and stop gate keeping info to people new to the 4WD community. Great video!
'Hard to park in the city'??????? Ha ha, what are you doing there in a 79? I drive around cities in mine to avoid them. 'Underpowered?' Get a Dodge Ram. They are programmed to last which is why they hold their value. 'Not suitable for small drivers'. I don't know as I am 6'2" and every Landcruiser I have known fits me fine and that includes wearing a cowboy hat!!!! 'Sound deadener'? I love being able to hear the road and bush which is where I live. My 2019 is pretty quiet in my opinion but I don't live on bitumen roads or in a city (550 kms from nearest city) 'Track correction'. Does it keep you awake at night???? It has never bothered me, AND, it never will. I sell my 79's every 2 years and they go up in value. I just laugh when I think someone will pay money to correct track so they can sleep at night. Spend your money on tyres, you will have more fun. Just my opinion. But I use my 79 as a ute, not an overland city tourer.
@@MussaKZN Haha, I actually just got an update on my Toyota Tracker and its scheduled for production in January 22! Was originally planned for Sept 21 but got pushed back
@@michaelhermans4753 in saying that they don’t do anything, literally nothing any better than any of the other dual cabs on the market. They’re proof that you can put a v8 in any pile of junk and the bogans will continue to buy them.
Well said Reuben it takes some balls to go against the Australian riff raff that idolize these pig wagons. They also have weak clutches and actually give more problems than anyone would like to admit. The sound system is pathetic. The difflock engagement system is Unreliable and they are terribly overpriced. My 20 year old tractor is a far nicer place to spend a day than a 79.
Con... guys buy a 79 for the chick magnet effects, but it only attracts other guys to it. Pro... if ur in the closet the 79 will help you come out with all the guys that suddenly start sniffing round. 😂😂
@@nicktulett4219 my Gu ute does U turns far better than a ford dual cab I had. The zd isn't bad in the utes but a bigger engine would definitely be nicer
My pet hate is all most of the aussie canopy makers aren’t manufacturing a service body style canopy. Why do most them do a tray and canopy, extra materials, excess weight, they look ugly, who the hell is constantly taking the canopy off? Come canopy manufactures have choices……...
After just buying a 79, I knew what I was getting myself into with all these issues but that was the attraction. Most mods are bolt on which I can do myself if I choose. I have absolutely no regrets, so don't be put off by all the would be could be if your keen on buying one. Its like when you buy a V8 and people comment on fuel consumption, Who cares I am not buying one to save the planet.
Hey Adam, cheers for watching. I totally agree mate. I like them a lot mate, just not ALL of it that is all. We have another video coming out discussing the things i like about the the car. :)
Maybe so but the majority of the people that I see driving them are cashed up bogans who spend $50,000-$100,000 doing em up to take some instagram photos and the only mud they see is the driveway to the site compound.
@@AP-ow5vu name another 4WD drive Ute that people don’t have to spend that amount of money doing it up? Doesn’t matter what brand it is we all get ripped off accessorising them.
@@christurner68 Not true. Y62's are an absolute weapon even just with a 2 inch lift and muddies. I noticed you said ute but I'm just talking the 70 series in general. You don't have to spend thousands on either an overslung rear leaf or rear coil conversion so you don't get hung up on the slightest things like you do in a 70 series before you even get started with the other mods to make them as capable as any other 4wd stock.
@@AP-ow5vu yes we are talking utes, now that you mention the Y62, don’t you now feel embarrassed about calling 70 series drivers/owners bogans ?! That is the a laughable bit of hypocrisy isn’t it! You are aware that Y62 owners are cutting the vehicle in hand to convert them to utes and put canopies on them? Tell me that is cheaper than buying a Ute?
@@christurner68 I think the chops usually cost somewhere around 20k with a tray don't they? I know someone who just got a y62 TI brand new for 93k so roughly 113k for a y62 ute we'll say... It's not hard at all to make a 79 series worth 113k when they're selling brand new in the 90-95k mark and how much more car do you get with a y62 there's no comparison. I wouldn't chop a y62 so would be better to compare it with a 76 series. You could just compare a stock sr5 hilux with a stock 79 series and see how much further the hilux goes in the bush for 20 grand less.
You forgot one of the big issues ...........where the alternator is positioned.Add to that that the 70 Series needs electrical input to even run the engine.
why wud Toyota spend millions in R&D wen they know Australians will buy these 1980s spec utes by the truck loads n then spend their own money doing the fixes that Toyota wud already know bout. so who is smart n who isnt. my angel grinder has more tech than a 79 cruiser. honestly i dont get it.
Dartmoor Dave Still mate ,if a rubber plug can come dislodged enabling material to enter the bellhousing on a extremely expensive purposely made off road vehicle ,it seems to be a failure in design.
@@raeanker3078 I know on LandRover its a proper threaded plug but I believe I heard in the chit-chat Rueben say the bung had come out. Meaning a push in bung. But, yes, not too clever.
When I got my hilux I sat in a 79 at the same time… I got an sr5 with a couple of mods for 64.. a stock 79 was 75.. it’s crazy to me how they can charge that amount of money for a car that is so primitive.. saying that I still love them lol
I think your comparing a nice sporty car to a work ute that was made to work and tow heavy loads . 200 series is made for a family comfortable and smooth for grandma . If you want to go fast buy a Toyota chaser 1j powered .
Another channel propagating the myth that the different wheel track is a problem. The problem is the vehicle design of the dual cab 79. All the people who re-mortgage their homes to place all that weight on the back and whom correct the wheel track still discover vague and light steering going up rocky loose hills. After spending all the money correcting the track the problem of light vague steering is still there. Why is it that all the national parks, police, cattle stations, surveyors, UN and 1000's of terrorists never complain about the track difference ? And another question : How does adding all that weight get you closer to nature and make the view any better ? Who the hell needs a 2 person deep sea diving bell and a lunar space command module ?
I honestly dont understand why people still desperately want one when there is so many inherant issues from factory and really is complete lack luster in every department for its price tag it should not be worth anymore than a ranger or hilux when a hilux has more equipment and capability. It really should be a 200 Series with stronger more rugged components. If you had these features and issues in any other car domain i.e A hot hatch back (not a great analogy) but it would be written off as a decent car at all and over priced yet we have everyone else jump on this bandwagon for a 79 when it really is needing alot fixed. Your much better off buying a Y62 patrol. The hate list recap; 1.Turning circle and the track from factory should have a 20-1 Steering rack - 2. Definately should have the twin turbo V8 from the 200 series when your paying that much it should not be a slug - paying exuberant prices when a Y62 is 20-30 grand cheaper and will do everything better and has everything from factory right (or just buy a 200 series/300) 3. The interior is a joke we are in late 2000's a car not coming with cup holders, manual windows, no roof console, hopeless seats for lumbar and support with 5 way control and not having decent infotainment with options for apple car play/android auto we have phones with more tech than this car at $100k plus is a joke, a cheap car has better sound deadening to anyone that wants the car your the laughing stock of your mates but lucky you cant hear them with the cabin noise. 4. The Track is just a joke from factory that should not have been going on for the last decade toyota should have resolved this. If you want to spend another $5-10k to fix it... YOu can then add on that your still using leaf springs we have the technology and parts to be using triangulated coil sprung rear for better control support and enjoyment, they dont like laiden weight on the tray corectly the stock suspension really lacks it requires all new suspension, the torsion bars are a joke, the front end should 100% not be a leaf still a solid axle coil is needed we had all these things in the early 90's on some of the best 4wd 80 series and gu/gq yet we are willing to spend upwards for $20-30k to go ahead and make these changes. These cars really do not make sense when you put it all on paper... With the extra wasted money your better off buying a 80 series or gu/gq do a engine conversion build it out correctly and have all the creature comforts and still come in under the price of one of these 79 new
@@Neiiil Havent put any effort into not convince myself when the facts speak for themselves if everyone wants to go spend another $20-30k or if not alot more to make a car suitable for their needs and still pay an exuberant amount for 1980's tech for a slow pig of a car go ahead. The rest of the world has moved foward
The only modification I did to my 79 was to trade it in. What an over priced tractor. Why people kid themselves they are the best 4wd is beyond belief.
It's the fact that they can post it on Instagram and get abit of clout in their sad lonely life that's plagued with car payments till the day they die 😂
Your right, I bought a 2019 79 two months ago, poor fuel economy and poor power, put it on the Dyno and when it was road tested by the shop the couch couldn’t handle it, heavy duty clutch being put in at moment.
The 79 series is a shitbox, they are overpriced to start with and then you have to spend a crap load more on top of the stupid purchase price to make it a third decent 🤦♂️
As a $80/90k vehicle or whatever they are now in stock form there is no other word for them. SHIT! Most overrated and overpriced car on the market. When you buy a 76/79 for $80+K you're really buying one for $110+K by the time you go and fix all the stuff Toyota got wrong. I'm sure they're decent once they're fixed but you shouldn't have to.
Unfortunately Toyota have gone down hill. All there after nowadays is your money and to hell with the customers. You would also expect that a new vehicle would have more power and run cheaper. But they don't there more expensive even with all the new technology. Old saying keep it simple stupid
How could not mention the stupid rear spring hangers!!! These things are the worst offroad. Like freakin snowplows 😂 oh look a normal sized rut in the mud, haha nope!
Hey brah I disagree I bought a single cab 79 last a second hand vehicle and I totally love it! So true on all five points but it’s not boring to drive! I love that it’s noisy , cup holders meh not an issue for me Yes underpowered 💯 that for me is an issue but nothing I won’t cry over . I drive all these new hilux and rangers for work and they are boring as hell to drive there is no excitement or personality with the cars they come across as identical 😪 I have a work mate 2011 79 The v8 grumble 5 speed manual 😬 It’s hard for me to explain but I love this vehicle Yeah I have done some mods but that also is fun to do Maybe I’m to old u loved the old hq 308 v8 back In The days when I was growing. The 79 kinda feels like that to me Over priced hell yes 👍🏻 underperformed hell yes 👍🏻 Love your thoughts on the vehicle great to hear peeps thoughts on the negative issues I’m keen on your track correction mate that bugs me 🤟 Cheers John 😬
76 series turn so much better, legit can’t understand why anyone would stretch these. To be fair they are a farm truck meant to thrashed in underground mines etc. they can’t have all the luxuries and expect them to keep working. Imagine the sound deading after a week with mud and grot getting caught up. If you want luxury don’t buy a solid axle tractor.
Careful, The next ones will come with a canopy. Toyota create the cake mix in a box, they know there customers will bake and decorate that cake just how they like it.
The 79 wouldn't be made if it wasn't for the huge amount that mining buy. They are under powered and Ag as hell but nothing else can survive the environment that they go through in mining.
6 speed for better fuel economy better tune, diff correction, leaf spring up the differential not under, cup holders, better hand brakes, bigger clutch from factory would be great, sound deadning
I went from a 99 78 series to a 2021 dual cab 79. 2” Lift with 34s. The stereo is definitely absolute shit, the cabin noise isn’t bad at all, dunno why people say this but I don’t have a 3” exhaust either. The rear track is annoying especially when towing, sways you around on the road. Definitely underpowered Half tempted to sell it and go back to a real clean 75 series Ute
Cab noise was extra bad in the early releases I think both my bosses had 2013’s? And the back seat felt like an ironing board… hope they addresses that in the newer models
If you have kids and you are looking into these trucks, there's no child seat clips like you get in, well, any other car. You'll have to add them in yourself.
Agree 100% with all of this mate. I did remap the engine and upgraded clutch, exhaust. 3" lift and bar work. Couldn't be happier now. Basic Ute for a basic bloke
I have a 76 series and i agree with all of those statements, but man do i still love that car, yeah i gotta make it better, but i can make it my own at least
Besides the wheel track issue, think you missed a few big ones. first off, Those bulky leaf springs getting hung up on everything offroad. where alternator is placed, its so low, going through mud you are almost guaranteed to have issues. and put put a sealed one in costs over 2 grand, thats if u don't install it yourself. airbox sealing issues. Also such a high price for a bare bones vehicle. love 70 series cruisers when there done up properly but they cost a ton of money to get the vehicle to that point where its bullet proof.
There are 3 things I look at when buying a car, Power Handling Comfort 79 has none of them. Beats me why people buy them. I love v8s and love toyota. But I'll spend my cash elsewhere.
You forgot about no child restraint points and 2 speakers in the dash for a 4 door vehicle 🤦🏻♂️ but your rite, we still buy Em because they’re bulletproof
Spot on Reuben. You pay so much for a vehicle and then have to spend a fortune on it to make it how it should be from factory. The dual cab Utes should be twin turbo generally they carry weight and tow as well so realistically they should have more then the wagon if not the same. Auto option as well as the manual but then the wagon should have a manual option as well as the auto. Why don’t they put the wagon interior into the Utes? The diff is ridiculous the engineer wants sacking. By the time you change everything Your better off financially with DMW dual cab chop. 💪🏽 A y62 patrol chop could even be a better option as well financially Keep up the great work love the videos and honesty
5 things I hate about them. 1. Dog to drive 2. Shit on fuel 3. Noisy 4.needs a 6th gear, 5. Young P platers think they are awesome when they drive them.
The 5 same things annoy me with my 79. As i tow a 3 tonne caravan, i have the Safari Armax package added at $11,000 cost. Pleased with the performance ,but a year down the track, having my regrets, as fault lights on dash. Hope to get it sorted soon , otherwise the package will be removed.
I love the Big 79 and the 76 but the amount of money that you'll be parting ways with to making it be more comfortable to drive is insane😮😮😮..... its like Toyota is giving you a bare-bones vehicle from factory and you have to accessorize and modify it to make it more livable with
Easy fix for turning circle get a Subaru hehe - Toyota know they can rip off drivers with a plus $75000 price tag because they know loyalist will still buy these low class vehicles because they have to have their ‘V8 mate’-also everyone young country fellah now wants their v8 diesel 79 series - get rid of the grunt V8 and put in the more fuel efficient and powerful V6 now used in the 300 - Troopies and Landcruisers come with their own ‘factory rust’ so they’ll full apart in a few years - the new ‘79 & Troopy should be V6 diesel with auto transmission and aluminium body - John in SA
Very very true the 79/76 and BRZ /86 are very similar real crappers stock and u have to throw some much money at them to get them to a point u expect them to be at
Shouldn't cost more then 60k. Sat in one at a dealer the other day. Honestly don't understand the appeal for the price tag. 50-60k new price I could possibly see it as reasonable. But nearing a 100k. The sales staff have a name for people that blow that kind of cash on a 79. It's called a wooden duck!
another pet hate is having to pay for a box and accessories to go into that box to mount onto the back of the ute that cost same price and more of the price of the rig itself?!
They didn't get anything right... I just bought an 01 f250 over a v8 cruiser... the f truck was cheaper. Had more tray space for work and don't need to spend another loan on it to make it a "decent vehicle"...
I've had Toyota's all my life from the FJ 40 right up to that model, my advice sell it ,Toyota cost way to much to get it working grate. Over priced for what you get.i brought a 4x4 mitsubishi 7 seater canter , should of done it year's ago
Dude you don't buy that truck to have creature comforts you buy it because it's solid axle it's been axle front you got a V8 Diesel stick a turbo on it , tune ,coils, 37 airbags maybe you're not buying it to drive down pavement day in and out and if you do want to do buy a 200 series or 300 series LandCruiser
number 6 the rear wheels aren't even close to being under the middle of the tray. number 7 ridiculously overweight number 8 alternator located under the engine number 9 spring under rear instead of spring over number 10 poor offroad capability.
I hate that you can't buy an auto version stock , manual is fine for those able to change gear , but , some of us have specific needs and a wagon will not do the job ! If I have to modify a vehicle heavily , I don't bother starting with the most expensive std option , I go with a cheaper option and make it the way I want for less $$$$$ .
This is hilarious to watch having only just learned of you due to the Y62.. for a die-hard Toyota guy who now wheels a weapon Y62.. enough said V8 petrol 4 the win
Do your self a favour and take a good look at the Ram 1500 far superior unit great on fuel with the cylinder deactivation and they have cup holders too 🤣 oh and electric windows 🤣 oh and not mention climate control 🤣 and there axels are in line, anyway have a test drive and tell me you don’t love it over your over priced prehistorically designed rattle can of a landcruiser.
Who would think a 4wd commercial vehicle would have a high seating position for visability, sparse interior for cost and no cup holders! But you are right about the track width it sucks ass.
It's strange that most professional users of 79 series V8 don't have any problem. But overloaded with a huge canopy on the dual cab model and you soon find the steering vague and light going up a steep rutted hill. The dual cab 79 is fine if you just put 100kg in the back. No one does that of course. The 79 dual cab is an inherently bad design for those who want to load them up.
